Le Lobe: Appel de dossiers

programmation régulière 2018-2019

Thématique: trop de réalité

date de tombée: 27 novembre 2017

COMMISSAIRE 2017-2019_HUGO NADEAU

_ Curriculum vitae

_ Texte de démarche

_ Dossiers d’images (15)

Proof 25 Call for Emerging Canadian Artists
Deadline for Proof 25 submissions: October 30th, 2017.

Proof is Gallery 44’s annual group exhibition of photo-based work by Canadian emerging artists reflecting a range of current concerns and practices in contemporary photography from across the country. Proof is often one of the first exhibitions in a professional context for an emerging artist as was the case for artists such as Karin Bubas, Janieta Eyre, Isabelle Hayeur, Germaine Koh, Nicholas Pye, Althea Thauberger, and Andrew Wright.

“I was one of the artists in Proof 9 at Gallery 44 along with other great photographers like Stacey Tyrell and Althea Thauberger. Being apart of a Proof show is a catalyst for many emerging artists in getting valuable exposure and experience within the Toronto art scene and nationally. Ice Breakers 2018 – Call For Proposals

Brief

Ice Breakers is now embarking on its second year of producing and exhibiting temporary public art works along Queens Quay within Toronto, Canada’s Waterfront for winter 2018. For this year, we are opening an international design competition for the selection of five (5) artist teams to provide installations for five (5) unique sites. The exhibition is to run January 19, 2018 until February 25, 2018.

This is a single-stage open international competition, welcoming artists, designers, architects and landscape architects to submit concept proposals for Ice Breakers’ temporary artwork installations.

Ice Breakers is an initiative presented by Toronto’s Waterfront Business Improvement Area (BIA), developed and produced by Winter Stations Inc., the team behind the annual Winter Stations International Design Competition bringing temporary public art installations to Toronto’s Beach.

Theme

For Ice Breakers’ second year the theme is “Constellation”. This can be interpreted in various ways, but we are hoping to see work that is challenging, while also accessible, reminding the public that public art can be fun and engaging. Artists may choose to converse with the winter constellations of the Northern Hemisphere, playing with astrology, mythology, history and with stellar form and earthly representation.

As always, the intention is to bring colour, warmth and activity to the water’s edge, inviting people out of their buildings to take a winter walk along the Waterfront and appreciate the unique Toronto landscape at this time of year.

There is no limit to the size of the installation, but please note that included in the jurors’ instructions will be durability and constructability. Installations cannot exceed the total cost outlined. Installations may consist of a singular object or a configuration of dispersed elements.

Winning teams will be provided with an allowance for travel and accommodation to spend time in Toronto during the installation and the activities surrounding the opening, January 18, 2018.

Sites

The five locations are as follows:

HTO Park West – 375 Queens Quay West
Peter Street Basin bridge (north side) – 370 Queens Quay West
HTO Park – 339 Queens Quay West
Simcoe Wave Deck (flat eastern portion) – 243 Queens Quay West
Harbourfront Centre – east of Ontario Square (in front of We Brew Café) – 235 Queens Quay West
Please refer to website http://icebreakers.winterstations.com for further detail on specific sites.

Selection and Approval Process

Once the Jury has met and determined a short list of entrants, a technical review of the finalists will be conducted in order to ensure the constructability of the projects. Those on the shortlist will be assigned a construction team lead by a project manager, chosen by the organizers to produce the appropriate working drawings to ensure that the construction is feasible and within budget. This collaboration will take place from November 2017 through to installation. The final winners will be announced December 1, 2017.

All construction will be carried out in Toronto by firms selected by the organizers and overseen by the entrant, the project manager and the construction team. The entrants chosen to participate in this competition agree to work to the schedule established by the organizers.

Competition Rules, Regulations and Submission Requirements

A design honourarium of $3,500.00 CAD will be paid to selected proposals.

Deadline for submissions is October 13, 2017.

Southern Alberta Art Gallery (SAAG) Submission Guidelines
Exhibition proposals are accepted throughout the year and reviews are ongoing.  Selection is carried out over a period of time through studio visits and correspondence with artists and curators in whom the gallery has an interest.  Those interested in proposing their work to SAAG are asked to include with their submission: a curriculum vitae, an artist statement and/or letter of intent, a wide selection of images, and other relevant support material. Submissions should be mailed to:

Southern Alberta Art Gallery
601 3rd Ave. S.

The gallery will not return your submission – please do not send original artworks or valuable materials.   Given the large number of submissions received by the gallery, formal letters of reply will only be issued to proposals of immediate interest.

Exhibitions are generally six weeks in length.  An opening is held to introduce the work to the public.  Artists are also invited to give an illustrated lecture on their work in conjunction with the University of Lethbridge Faculty of Fine Art during the academic year.  Other special events (workshops, panel discussions, etc.) are considered on a case-by-case basis.

The Southern Alberta Art Gallery pays CARFAC fees, shipping and insurance, and often seeks funding to produce catalogues for the exhibition.  All publications, including our quarterly newsletter GALLERY (which discusses and reproduces work by exhibiting artists along with other programming), are exchanged with other institutions in Canada and abroad.

The Southern Alberta Art Gallery fosters the work of contemporary artists who challenge boundaries, encourages broad public engagement and promotes awareness and exploration of artistic expression.  Our work extends to local, national and international communities.

apexart exhibitions are selected from hundreds of anonymous proposals by an international jury of more than 200 people. apexart exhibitions feature works about everything, from anywhere, by anyone. If you follow what we do, you might discover something new or end up contributing to our programming.

In 2017, Animal Intent explored creature creativity, Promises to Keep presented performance art by women Pakistani artists, and Fellow Travelers explored the intersections of science fiction and migration narratives. apexart has also held exhibitions in places like Tarrafal, Cape Verde—examining histories of post-colonial prisons in Glimmer of Freedom—and Tbilisi, Georgia—probing the legacy of Soviet Cosmonautics in Illegal Kosmonavtika.

WinterStations 2018 – Call for Proposals

WinterStations is now embarking on its fourth year, again opening an international design competition to bring temporary public art installations to The Beaches for an exhibition to celebrate Toronto’s winter waterfront landscape.

This year we are hoping to include up to six lifeguard stands, including an additional three by invited universities, across Balmy, Kew and Ashbridges Bay beaches located in the heart of the Beach community, south of Queen Street East, between Woodbine and Victoria Park Avenues. These utilitarian structures are to be used as the armature for temporary installations, which will need to be able to withstand the rigours of Toronto winter weather. The exhibition is to run February 19 until April 6, 2018.

This is a single-stage open international competition, welcoming artists, designers, architects and landscape architects to submit concept proposals for WinterStations’ temporary artwork installations.

Selection and Approval Process

Once the Jury has met and determined a short list of entrants, a technical review of the finalists will be conducted in order to ensure the constructability of the projects. Those on the shortlist will be assigned a construction team lead by a project manager, chosen by the organizers to produce the appropriate working drawings in order to ensure that the construction is feasible and within budget. This collaboration will take place from December 2017, continuing through to installation. The final winners will be announced around December 6, 2017.

All construction will be carried out in Toronto by firms selected by the organizers and overseen by the entrant, the project manager and the construction team. The entrants chosen to participate in this competition agree to work to the schedule established by the organizers.

Competition Rules, Regulations and Submission Requirements

A design honorarium of $3,500.00 CAD will be paid to selected proposals.

Deadline for submissions is November 3, 2017.

Budget: $35,000 CA

Queen’s Faculty of Law at Queen’s University invites Indigenous artists to submit qualifications for consideration to design, fabricate and install a permanent artwork for the Gowling WLG Atrium of the Faculty of Law, Queen’s University. This is a two-stage competition that will be assessed by a committee. Interested Indigenous artists who may not have previous experience creating a public art commission are encouraged to consider mentorship and artistic collaborations with other artists.

The project is part of the Faculty of Law’s response to further the objectives of the Calls to Action outlined by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, as well as the final report of Queen’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission Task Force. It is part of a greater initiative to increase the visibility of Indigenous art and culture and the recognition of Indigenous territory in spaces across the Queen’s University campus. The aim of this project is to create a welcoming space for Indigenous peoples in the Faculty of Law, and to help promote awareness around historical/contemporary issues relevant to Indigenous peoples and law.

This is a high traffic space, integral to the law school, as it provides the main entry point for the building. Public art for the atrium is to be created for installation from the ceiling, the main wall, or glass windows. Additional consideration can be given activating or situating the artwork for viewing from outside, especially at night.

The artwork should reflect aesthetics and/or concepts that have current/historical cultural significance to Indigenous peoples. The work should also address the relationship of Indigenous peoples to law, and should assist in creating a welcoming space in the faculty for Indigenous peoples: students, instructors, guests and community members.

Additional Information

Please see http://law.queensu.ca/indigenous-art-project for technical specifications and photos and a video of the atrium.

The budget for this commission is $35,000 CA, plus HST, and must include all costs required to design, fabricate, store, transport and install the public art, including the cost of engineering.

Selection Procedure

This commission will be awarded following a two-stage process:

Request for Qualifications: Stage I – Qualifications will be evaluated by a Sub-Committee. The Sub-Committee will shortlist a maximum of three artists to move forward to Stage II.

Request for Proposals: Stage II – Shortlisted artists (maximum three) will be given an honorarium of $800 plus HST and detailed Terms of Reference for preparing sketches and budgets for Stage II of the competition. A technical review of the proposals will be requested three weeks prior to the final submission date. Proposals will be reviewed by the project team who will provide feedback on the technical and logistical feasibility of the proposed artwork. Comments will be shared with shortlisted artists to allow for their incorporation into final proposals.

Shortlisted artists are required to attend a public open house to present their designs to the Faculty of Law community and the public and to answer questions. Additional forms of community consultation will also be developed for this stage. All comments received from the public during this consultation will be submitted to the committee for consideration.

Open call: “Artist as an Object” film series
Application deadline: October 29, 2017

“Artist as an Object” is an ongoing film series about emerging and established artists. The core idea of this series is to offer insight into the work and processes of the artists through interviews and non-technical presentations of their art.

Films will showcase artists who are pushing boundaries—aspiring artists who are advancing art in unexpected new ways and who dare to question its principles.

Our goal is to shed light on the ideas and motivations of artists and to help them share their unique views. We hope to achieve this by creating a different kind of cinematic experience: a sound-based series that puts emphasis on language.

Open call
Nonterritorial is accepting commissions for biopics, including submissions for the “Artist as an Object” series. This series focuses on artists who are working at the frontier of contemporary art and challenging the exhibition model.

Selected artists will have a chance to articulate their ideas on how they envision the future of art through film. The “Artist as an Object” series aims to serve as a bridge between artists working on similar issues and as a gateway for international exposure.

Nonterritorial pledges to store the biopics in an industry-standard archival format and to assist artists and patrons by providing the films in any encoding required.

How to apply
Please send a cover letter and a portfolio of your work, up to a maximum of 10 images. If you wish to be considered for the “Artist as an Object” series, please further elaborate on how your art practice questions the exhibition model. As an alternative to the portfolio, you may send a writing sample that you think is representative of your thoughts on the subject, along with a description of artworks that you would like to see produced.

All material must be submitted in PDF format. Artists and third parties working on behalf of artists can file an application via email: info [arobas] nonterritorial [point] pro

Who is eligible?
Everyone who wishes to commission a biopic is eligible to submit material. Artists who are questioning the exhibition model through their art practice or theoretical inquiry are especially welcomed to apply.

Additional information
Applications deadline for “Artist as an Object” series: October 29, 2017. Accepting applications for the engaged commissions all year round.

What is Nonterritorial?
Nonterritorial produces unique artworks in unusual settings. Through its network of partners and patrons, it generates opportunities for artists to engage with audiences in novel ways.

Nonterritorial is building a transactional model that is meaningful to all participants involved.

Nonterritorial is in the process of creating a healthy ecosystem for artists that do not rely on the exhibition model or otherwise do not fit within the existing structures.

Collection
Nonterritorial has a growing collection of works from contemporary artists who question accepted ideas about art. For instance, the belief that artworks require a self-contained object with a compositional space or that we cannot draw articulated experiences from objects and actions that are subordinated to useful ends.

Imma
Nonterritorial collaborates with Imma, an independent laboratory devoted to artistic research. Imma investigates alternatives to conventional modes of artistic reception and spectatorship.

When we think of artworks, we often think of objects hanging on the walls or laying on the floor of a gallery. But does it have to be this way?
