Open Studio

Call for Submissions: Embellish

DEADLINE: Submissions must be received on or before 5:00 pm, on Monday, January 5th, 2015.

Open Studio’s Programming Committee is launching an open call to all Canadian print-based artists for submissions for a juried exhibition to be held in the Open Studio Gallery, April 10th – May 9th, 2015.

This exhibition is being organized in memory of Jeannie Thib, a talented artist and cherished member of the Open Studio community, who passed away in 2013. Pattern and graphic motif were the foundation of Thib’s aesthetic and conceptual practice. Thib approached ornament as both strategy and process; not merely as superfluous detail, but rather as an end in itself.

SUBMISSIONS: For this exhibition, artists are invited to submit work that focuses on the theme of “embellishment.” To embellish is to enhance something through the use of decorative elements (graphic design, ornamentation, repetitive patterns etc.), but may also imply a narrative exaggeration through the addition of fictitious details. Open Studio presents a wide range of print media-based works from traditional to experimental, including work that, although not produced using traditional printmaking techniques, shares through its conceptual concerns a relationship to printmaking. Please visit our website for further information and to submit your proposal electronically.

ELIGIBILTY: Open to all Canadian artists working in print media. Accepted formats include: 2 and 3-dimensional works, book works, digital and multi-media installation-based work. Please click here to review our general eligibility guidelines.

BENEFITS: CARFAC fees will be paid. A brochure with commissioned text will accompany the exhibition.

THEME

ISEA2015’s theme of DISRUPTION invites a conversation about the aesthetics of change, renewal, and game-changing paradigms. We look to raw bursts of energy, reconciliation, error, and the destructive and creative forces of the new. Disruption contains both blue sky and black smoke. When we speak of radical emergence we must also address things left behind. Disruption is both incremental and monumental.

In practices ranging from hacking and detournement to inversions of place, time, and intention, creative work across disciplines constantly finds ways to rethink or reconsider form, function, context, body, network, and culture. Artists push, shape, break; designers reinvent and overturn; scientists challenge, disprove and re-state; technologists hack and subvert to rebuild.

Disruption and rupture are fundamental to digital aesthetics. Instantiations of the digital realm continue to proliferate in contemporary culture, allowing us to observe ever-broader consequences of these effects and the aesthetic, functional, social and political possibilities that arise from them.

Within this theme, we want to investigate trends in digital and internet aesthetics and revive exchange across disciplines. We hope to broaden the spheres in which disruptive aesthetics can be explored, crossing into the worlds of science, technology, design, visual art, contemporary and media art, innovation, performance, and sound.

To elaborate on this general theme we have established the following sub-themes:

RESIDUE

Increasingly, culture operates based on a sophisticated, invisible layer of data that may or may not relate to the physical world, and which leaves a “worldly residue” behind as machines alter our lived experience. These effects go to a wide variety of real world impacts. In addition there is a growing appreciation in the mainstream for the partial, procedural aesthetics produced by internet culture, from animated .gifs, RGB palettes, filters, to cats, unicorns, hair smiles and ugly selfies. What are the current effects of how the physical and the digital are entwined and what are the implications for the future? What does this blending of spheres mean for politics, aesthetics and the social world?

GENERATIVE ART

From strictly autonomous systems that generate complete work to tools for computer assisted creativity, artists and designers have been exploring generative frameworks for decades. In our increasingly computerized world, fronting a tsunami of data, we see an ever-increasing role for generative systems that operationalize autonomous behaviours that are algorithmically determined. We invite work that reflects on human and machine autonomy, aesthetics, and roles. How can we build on ideas of disruption in the framework of generative systems, processes, art and music?

GLITCH

By definition a glitch is small: a transient, short-lived fault that creates disturbance in a system. And yet the effects of a glitch can be monumental: on an aesthetic level a glitch can completely elide the readability of an image; in an airplane a glitch can cause total systems failure leading to catastrophe. One can find glitches in anything: in complex processes, in our images, bodies and lived experiences. A glitch is unstable, something slippery that is hard to find and harder to fix. Glitch is a ping from the system that makes itself visible. While glitch has a history it continues to appear in the contemporary practices of many artists. How can we explore glitch in the frame of cataclysmic, raw disruption? What is the scale of glitch now?

BODY, EMBODY + PERFORM

Our own bodies form lenses of experience, perception, cognition and disruption. How can we exploit the body itself in renegotiating physical habit, cultural experience and embodied texts in the context of embodied innovation, and disruptive technology through the lens of embodiment? What are the key drivers of innovation as it is situated within and upon the body and what are the consequences – social, political, biological, creative, performative, in cyborgs and in fashion? How can we see movement as a driver of knowledge and innovation? What is physical movement now?

PROTOTYPE + DIY

We are in the midst of a revolution driven by DIY culture and participatory cultures of making. These cultures are knit together by networked technology and driven by increasingly available and ever-smaller and more powerful components in the internet of things. Hacking as in: DIY, physical computing, drones, robots, sensor networks,  body-hacking, biofeedback, responsive systems, hacking as a determinant in political and aesthetic strategies, the critical making movement, 3D printing and  rapid prototyping all have a place in this framework. While applied, these technological processes fluctuate in a speculative and creative space.

NEW TEXT

Text reveals language in code, poetics and discourse. How can text, code, and practices in electronic literature be explored in the frame of disruptive change? How do defamiliarization and rupture cross from literature into other spheres? Using text and code, how can we investigate contemporary aesthetics at this moment within bookforms, narrative, electronic, or generative literature? What are the possibilities of creation and destruction using the medium of code and the function of the literary in today’s culture?

SCIENCE + INTERDISCIPLINARITY

Science informs art as art problematizes science. How have disruptive models from other fields created effects for science in areas like citizen science, biology, social culture, fashion, mutation, performance and ecology? How do scientific discourses and metaphors integrate and interfere with other disciplines such as architecture, politics and urbanism?

SOCIAL SPACES: DESIGN, ARCHITECTURE + CITIES

Our social spaces are the backdrops of everyday experience in contemporary design, urban architectures and cityscapes.  We are knit together within the complex framework of our cities, through technological and social networks, patterns of habit and use and by our interactions with objects and people both near to us and half a globe away. Our lives are more entwined than ever, but the networks that hold us together can become fragile. When networks govern both global trade and our relationships with our thermostats, where is the tension between innovation and disruption?

Submissions may take the symposium sub-themes into consideration or may think beyond them under the overarching theme of DISRUPTION.

ANTI – Contemporary Art Festival call for proposals 2015

ANTI – Contemporary Art Festival is an international contemporary arts festival presenting site-specific works made for public space in Kuopio, Finland. ANTI presents live, sonic, visual and text-based art from today’s most exciting and innovative artists. A truly international festival and Finland’s foremost presenter of Live Art, ANTI is a meeting place for artists and audiences fascinated by how art shapes the spaces of everyday life.

In September 2015 ANTI Festival will collaborate with the Kuopio Marathon to present a unique series of cultural events created in response to the race. We invite proposals for projects that engage with one or more of the following areas:

·      Duration, longevity and time; the long and short of time-based activities

·      Sport and culture, sporting culture, cultural sport

·      The body and endurance – expanded ideas of endurance: political, social, cultural forms of endured activity; the social agency of endurance

·      The quantified self: fitness culture, technology and performance

·      The race, racing and competitive frameworks

·      Participation and mass events – the individual and the many

·      The enthusiast and the amateur: the cultural agency of the ‘trained’ every-person

·      Topographic trajectories and spatial intervention: running/reading/using the city

ANTI is a site-specific festival – we do not show projects in traditional cultural spaces, thus projects have a direct relationship with the spaces and places they are shown in. When proposing a project please make it clear where your project would ideally be located, and why. The 2015 festival will take place in and round the Kuopio Marathon – projects are imagined to establish a number of relationships with the race itself; some may engage directly with the event while others might happen in parallel to it etc.

The Kuopio Marathon was first held in 1998. 2015 will see around 2,500 runners take part. The event comprises a mix of distances – full marathon, half marathon, 10K (walk or run) and a series of races for children. The events takes place across the 4th and 5th of September. Climate Change Solutions Fund
Application deadline: December 22, 2014

www.rauschenbergfoundation.org

The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation announced today the creation of the Climate Change Solutions Fund to support cross-disciplinary responses to global warming, issuing an open call for grant proposals from organizations whose work matches the Fund’s objectives.

Projects of particular interest are those that apply a systemic lens to the root causes of global warming; enroll the leadership of frontline communities most vulnerable to the impact of climate change; push for broad-based civic engagement and community action; and wherever possible leverage the value artists and culture bearers bring to processes for devising and deploying practical solutions to this global crisis. For more information about the grant’s guidelines and requirements, visit the foundation’s website.

The Climate Change Solutions Fund is designed to expand the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation’s current efforts in its Art + Environment program. To date the program has focused on artist-led projects to deepen public awareness of climate change, providing support to Maya Lin’s What is Missing memorial and Lars Jan’s Holoscenes. A year ago, the foundation partnered with Ballroom Marfa and the Public Concern Foundation to launch Marfa Dialogues/New York, a two-month series of public programs examining the intersections of climate change science, environmental activism, and artistic practice. The Climate Change Solutions Fund broadens this arts-centered strategy to equally support the work of non-arts organizations tackling the root causes of global warming in ways that both engage the public and recognize the catalytic roles culture and creativity can play in these endeavors.

About the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation
The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation fosters the legacy of the artist’s life, work, and philosophy that art can change the world. The foundation supports initiatives at the intersection of arts and issues that embody the fearlessness, innovation, and multidisciplinary approach that Robert Rauschenberg exemplified in both his art and philanthropic endeavors. In the last two years, the foundation has broadened its philanthropic efforts from seven legacy grantees to 95 across the USA; supported hundreds of artists impacted by Hurricane Sandy; and converted Rauschenberg’s home and studio in Florida into a dynamic residency program for emerging and recognized artists.

OPEN CALL FOR WOMEN: STORIES ABOUT HAIR

Hair is a defining part of the female body and in many ways shapes our experience as a female being. This is an open call for women’s stories about hair. Your stories will be incorporated into a performance that exhibits an experimental narrative. Your memories can be written in any format: short stories, poems, random musings, journal entries. They do not have to be pretty and publishable as I will be deconstructing and reconstructing the texts into one storyline, essentially creating a single narrative out of all our experiences in an abstracted, surreal, and evocative manner. I am especially interested in stories that examine the female experience with  vulnerability, intimacy, love, nurture, and traditional female roles (mother, daughter, lover, etc.)

I encourage you to think of the different types of hair, locations on the body, hair separated from the body, hair experienced at different ages, what hair signifies in different societies, hair as an “Othering” or “Anothering” device in social situations, separateness, connectedness, and physical, emotional and psychological change.

I also request your actual hair, if possible. You may mail snippets, ponytails, one strand, 100 strands, one inch, one foot–whatever you feel complements your story. Please include the following info: bodily location; (approximate) date hair was removed from body; method of removal; alterations such as hair dye, etc.

Email writings to HairTales2015 [arobas] gmail [point] com as a .doc or .docx.

Mail in secure packaging to 519 S. University Blvd. #13, Norman, OK 73069

The performance will be presented at BEEF HAUS in Dallas, TX as the finale of a month-long performance event in February 2015. Curated by Alison Starr, MFA.

DEFIBRILLATOR GALLERY is now accepting proposals for our fourth annual RAPID PULSE INTERNATIONAL PERFORMANCE ART FESTIVAL to be held JUNE 4-14, 2015. Contextualizing performance within visual art, RAPID PULSE aims to represent a wide range of styles and forms of time-based expression. We embrace artists who look to the body, objects, space, and time for inspiration, research, and practice. Dynamic programming, decidedly fearless and unique, aims to provoke thought and stimulate discourse surrounding performance art. We are accepting proposals to fit within a set structure and preference will be given to work that fits within these guidelines:

> Performances of thirty minutes or less in the main gallery.

> Durational work lasting three or more hours in our display window, viewed from the street.

> Outdoor or site-specific performances outside a gallery context.

RAPID PULSE is also taking applications for our video series. We seek performance works for the camera in which the lens is an integrated and essential element. Please note that performance documentation is not our focus. However, we do consider documentation of performances that are impossible to present live due to site specificity, extended duration, scale, unique materials, etc. Preference will be given to videos based on these criteria that are 10 minutes or less. We regret that video installations are not possible.

Approximately one-third of selected artists will be International, one-third local (Chicago), and one-third from other regions in the United States. Artists who have been in previous editions of Rapid Pulse may apply but priority is given to those who we have not yet presented.

We regret that RAPID PULSE is not able to pay artist fees or travel expenses. However, five nights of humble accommodation, one daily meal and limited assistance with materials will be provided. Accepted artists will also receive a printed catalog and photo/video documentation. We will notify applicants by JANUARY 30, 2015, allowing four months to seek funding opportunities in your homeland with our letter of invitation.

The curatorial committee for RAPID PULSE 2015 consists of Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art Curatorial Assistant, Steven Bridges; Curator and Performance Artist, Julie Laffin; Assistant Festival Director, Giana Gambino; Defibrillator Founder and Director, Joseph Ravens; and Curatorial Fellows, Jennifer Mefford and Teresa Silva.

Nonhuman subjectivities – Art Laboratory Berlin

Four to five hundred years ago Copernicus and Galileo ‘removed’ the Earth (and humanity) from the centre of the universe. In Western Philiosophy this coincides with the ‘epistemological turn’ away from cosmology. Western civilization through the enlightenment and into the modern age has continued to place the human experience at the center of existence. Postmodernism, for example, has reveled in human subjectivity, almost to the point of denying all else.

In response to recent cultural and scientific developments Art Laboratory Berlin is initiating an open call for art works, texts and cooperative works with artists, scholars and scientists on the general theme of non-human subjectivities.

Recent philosophical works by i.a. Graham Harman, Quentin Meillasoux, Isabelle Stengers and John Gray have questioned the solely human role of subjectivity that has formed the core of ‘humanism’ over the past five centuries.

We suggest a new multiplicity of viewpoints and an exploration of non-human intelligence, agency and subjectivity, that make up our planet (and beyond).

Possible topics could include

  • Perspectives under threat – non-human viewpoints during the great species die off.
  • Bacterial viewpoints – how microbes communicate, interact and experience the world.
  • Non-human perspectives – intelligence and agency in animals, plants, bacteria.
  • Re-definition of intelligence, agency and sentience in ways that are not anthropomorphic.
  • What do some of these perspectives make of Homo sapiens? e.g.- 90% of the cells in our body do not have human DNA -we are a mere host, a topography, for billions of bacteria and fungi.
  • How about agency (and even intelligence) beyond life – virii or crystals for instance.
  • Are complex data systems, algorithms, artificial intelligence beginning to have points of view, and forms of agency that are beyond human comprehension?

Art Laboratory Berlin is seeking submissions and proposals predominantly for exhibitions, performances and workshops, but is also interested in cooperation with scholars and scientists for the production of a series of lectures, texts and a symposium

The deadline for entries is 15 December, 2014.
Chosen proposals will form part of our 2016-17 programme

Please submit your proposal by email to: nonhumanisms(at)artlaboratory-berlin.org
The application should include a proposal (not longer than 5 pages), a CV and work portfolio (not longer than 10 pages). We ask that you keep the size of attachments altogether under 5MB. For video or other large files we encourage the use of links. (In rare exceptions proposals may be accepted by post, ie snailmail, if a request is first sent by email. If you want to request sending your proposal via post, please title the subject line: POST RQST.)

Test Exposure at the 16th Media Art Biennale WRO 2015, Poland

Open Call
Deadline: December 10, 2014
Application fee: none

The WRO Media Art Biennale is the major forum for new media art in Poland, and one of the leading international art events in Central Europe. Since its inception in 1989, WRO has been presenting art forms using new media for artistic expression and communication, exploring current creative territories and building a critical perspective toward emerging issues in culture, art, society and technology.

The previous edition of the WRO Biennale—WRO 2013 Pioneering Values Biennale—was held at 18 sites around the city of Wrocław: museums, galleries, art house cinemas, department stores, old factory halls and public space, where the works of over 200 artists were shown. The exhibitions, concerts, performances, video projections, installations and conferences were attended by more than 1,000 accredited guests and over 110,000 visitors. The WRO Catalog is available both in print and online. – www.wrocenter.pl/en/biennale-wro/wro-2013-pioneering-values/

WRO 2015: Test Exposure
The aim of the WRO 2015 Biennale is to give exposure to new media art experiments, individual explorations and approaches investigating the potential of art both to affect and to reflect emerging issues in culture.

Artists are invited to submit works that take on the risks of innovation, inquiry and imagination, using original observations, contemporary technologies and procedures in the process of creating inventive forms, interpreting the present and revising the notion of the future (which no longer seems to be a clearly defined project).

The WRO 2015 Test Exposure Biennale is a testing ground for creative, unconstrained investigations of art’s potential to react to the present and to anticipate future challenges.

Behave – Public Art experience! > Call for residencies (Luxembourg)
Deadline for Applications: January 23, 2015, 12 noon local time

Public Art Experience, a unique project seeking to engage the public with art through a series of high profile artists’ residencies, is inviting international artists working in different practices to submit proposals for BeHave, its first residency programme. Taking place in Belval, a former industrial site in the south of Luxembourg, BeHave will include six residencies, each lasting from three to nine months.

Public Art Experience is initiated by Le Fonds Belval, a governmental organisation responsible for the development of Belval’s La Cité des Sciences, which will house the University of Luxembourg as well as off-university research centres and a start-up centre.

BeHave functions on a number of levels. Firstly, it considers ‘the order of things’ and the role the artist can play in disrupting what are considered to be norms; in terms of urban planning, the objects which surround us, societal behaviour, molecular interaction and software programming. Secondly, through considering the word as a composite of be and have in relation to the site of Belval which is shifting its focus from material to immaterial production.

The intention of the residencies is that the artists will make facets of their practice visible to the public and that the outcomes of their residencies will be sited within Belval and accessible to the public from August until December 2016. Whilst the artists will need to consider how their work will be manifested after their residency, ongoing outputs produced during the residency, such as performative works, will also be encouraged. The residencies will be documented and disseminated through a series of conferences, seminars, publications (in print and online) and films.

London-based curators Stéphanie Delcroix and Michael Pinsky are the artistic directors for the first residency programme.

The Residencies
Six production residencies will be awarded to international artists. The residency period will run between September 2015 and August 2016.
– Two three-month residences providing an honorarium of €14,000
– Two six-month residences providing an honorarium of €28,000
– Two nine-month residences providing an honorarium of €42,000

A significant production budget will be available to reflect each artist’s working practice and ambitions. A studio in Belval will be provided, as will accommodation up to the value of €1000 a month.

Deadline: 23 January 2015

Glenfiddich
Issues Call for Canadian Artists to Enter Competition for the Coveted
2015 Glenfiddich Artists in Residence Prize
Toronto, November 26, 2014 – Glenfiddich is issuing a “Call to Artists” currently living and creating art in Canada to enter the internationally renowned competition for the prestigious 2015 Glenfiddich Artists in Residence Prize. The Canadian “Call to Artists” opens today, Wednesday November 26, 2014 and closes midnight eastern time, Friday January 30, 2015.

The Canadian winner will be one of a small and distinguished group around the world to be awarded the art community’s coveted prize to live and work at the Glenfiddich Distillery in Dufftown, Scotland. It’s only fitting that the world’s most awarded single malt Scotch whisky honours distinction. The three-month residency valued at $20,000 per artist represents the Glenfiddich commitment to the pioneering spirit of the arts and the communities it serves. While living in crofts (traditional small Scottish farm houses), artists are encouraged to find inspiration from the unique setting in the Scottish Highlands. The experience provides an opportunity unlike any other for artists to work in an international community, share in a dialogue with other artists and foster cross-disciplinary ideas.

Now in its 14th year internationally and 10th in Canada, the Glenfiddich Artists in Residence Prize attracts close to 200 submissions across Canada from the visual arts. The prize covers the cost of travel, living expenses and materials throughout the residency. From the submissions, five jury members choose eight finalists and ultimately one winner. To apply and for more information, applicants are asked to visit www.glenfiddich.com/ca/artistsinresidence

The distinguished jury for the selection of the Canadian Glenfiddich Artists in Residence Prize includes, Dr. Sara Diamond, president of OCAD University, Gaetane Verna, director of The Power Plant, Adelina Vlas, associate curator of contemporary art at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), Julian Sleath, programming manager of special events, economic development & culture at the City of Toronto, and the Canadian 2008 Glenfiddich Artists in Residence Prize recipient, Dave Dyment.

Andy Fairgrieve, curator, Glenfiddich Artists in Residence Prize underscores that, “The program’s ethos is about encouraging people to take inspiration from their experience living at the distillery, whether that be the pioneering heritage of Glenfiddich, the surrounding environment, or the daily life of the distillery and local community, and to be as pioneering as possible – a mission our artists live and breathe during their three-month residency.”

The Glenfiddich Artists in Residence Prize has sponsored over 100 artists globally since its inception in 2002. The artistic team of Rhonda Weppler and Trevor Mahovsky, were awarded the 2014 Canadian Glenfiddich Artists in Residence Prize for their collaborative work that takes an innovative sculptural approach to still life. During the three-month residency, the collaborative team ran a community sculpting and casting workshop based around coinage, while producing photography, video, and a range of sculptures made from copper, foil and custom oak veneer.

The past Canadian Glenfiddich Artists in Residence Prize winners include: Rhonda Weppler and Trevor Mahovsky (2014), Daniel Barrow (2013), Jillian McDonald (2012), Helen Cho (2011), Damian Moppett (2010), Arabella Campbell (2009), Dave Dyment (2008), Jonathon Kaiser (2007), Annie Pootoogook (2006) and Myfanwy Macleod (2005).

Call for submissions: Brucebo Fine Art Summer Residency Scholarship (Gotland, Sweden) and The William Blair Bruce European Fine Art Travel Scholarship

Submission deadline: January 31st, 2015

Since 1972, the Brucebo Fine Art Scholarship Foundation of Gotland, Sweden (BFAS) has offered a fine art residency/scholarship to a talented emerging professional Canadian artist providing an inspiring study/work stay in northern Europe on the island of Gotland, located in the Baltic Sea. The Brucebo fine art scholarships hark back to the post-impressionist era in Europe. Two young artists, Caroline Benedicks of Sweden and William Blair Bruce of Hamilton, Canada, meet in Paris, marry and after many years on the European continent, settle on Gotland Island. With the untimely death of William in 1906 and that of Caroline in 1935, the estate, in the early 70’s, created the Brucebo Fine Art (Scholarship) Foundation, an organization promoting island-based cultural history and fine art. To commemorate the unique Swedish-Canadian link of Caroline’s and William’s marriage and impressive artistry, two annual fine art scholarships for younger, professional Canadian artists were established: The Brucebo Fine Art Summer Residency Scholarship and The William Blair Bruce European Fine Art Travel Scholarship.

The Brucebo Fine Art Summer Residency Scholarship funds a three month working residency – starting June 1, 2015 – at the Brucebo studio cottage in the Själsö fishing village, 7 km north of of Visby in Gotland, Sweden. The scholarship covers travel expenses from Canada – Gotland (return), the use of the studio cottage, a monthly food stipend plus a small amount for materials and/or equipment. Total approximate value : SEK 30,000.

The William Blair Bruce Travel Scholarship finances a European research sejour, to be undertaken within the next year. The tour is based on an approved Fine Art-related investigative project. Total value: SEK 30,000. As a final part of the travel scholarship, the recipient must visit Visby via Stockholm. While in Visby, she/he will give a public lecture sponsored by the Foundation on the investigative theme pursued during her/his recent European travel.

Scholarship eligibility: Canadian artists who have studied fine arts within the last ten years.

Deadline for applications: January 31, 2015. See the application guidelines and download the application form at www.bruceboscholarships.com. Click on “Apply”.

Call for international entries: waste
Applications due: January 31, 2015

www.wyngmastersaward.hk

The WYNG Masters Award Commission (WMA Commission) invites entries for proposals from artists and photographers from both Hong Kong and the international community, to create new photo-based work in Hong Kong, focusing on the theme of waste. A three-member Selection Panel will choose the WMA Commission recipient, who will be awarded a 250,000 HKD grant which will contribute towards production of the successful proposal and a public event featuring the completed work.

With a commitment to programmes and activities that foster deeper understanding of issues facing Hong Kong, the 2014/2015 WMA Commission brings the issue of waste to the forefront. By facilitating and supporting original, creative interpretations of a significant environmental concern, the WMA Commission encourages a unique perspective on how Hong Kong is affected by an issue that has global implications, while increasing public awareness and knowledge. “Hong Kong is a natural stage for this type of programme,” explains Belinda Winterbourne, CEO of the WYNG Foundation and organiser of the WMA Commission. “As a dynamic, international city, Hong Kong faces challenges that resonate with other metropolitan centers around the world. When we see the impact of issues such as poverty or waste on Hong Kong, we also see how they will play out in other urban areas. What happens in Hong Kong has global relevance.”

With an issue as complex as waste, the WMA Commission provides the means for a more focused commitment to the subject through a visual approach. Ultimately, the aim is to bring clarity and understanding on an issue which has serious consequences for Hong Kong, and the rest of the world.

The newly designated WMA Commission better reflects the diverse and multidimensional nature of the WMA programme, which has evolved in recent years to include the grant, the WYNG Masters Award, a series of professional development workshops, a talks programme and student engagement projects. First launched in 2012/2013, the inaugural theme of the programme was poverty, in recognition of Hong Kong’s struggle with a yawning income gap. Air was the theme in the second year, where Hong Kong’s deteriorating air quality was the topic for contemplation. The mission of the WMA programme is to stimulate discussion and encourage the development of social responsibility in Hong Kong. It aims to support and encourage the evolution of photography as an art form in the territory, while at the same time using the medium to consider and discuss pressing social issues facing Hong Kong.

The WMA Commission is open to experienced and professional photographers and visual artists who reside and practice anywhere in the world. Entries must be submitted by January 31, 2015 and will be reviewed by a selection panel which determines a shortlist of applicants to be interviewed in March 2015. The selection panel includes Fung Ho Yin, Assistant Professor, School of Design, Hong Kong Polytechnic University; Dr. Charles Merewether, Visiting Professor, School of Art, Design and Media, Nanyang Technological University Singapore and member of Commissioning Panel for Venice Biennale Singapore Pavilion 2015; and a trustee from the WYNG Foundation.
About the WYNG Masters Award (WMA) programme
The WMA programme is multi-dimensional and includes the WYNG Masters Award, the WMA Commission, the WMA Open Photo Contest, a series of professional development workshops, talks programmes and student engagement projects. A non-profit, the programme was developed to generate awareness and engage the public on socially relevant issues of great importance to Hong Kong. The focus of the current 2014/2015 cycle of the WMA Programme is the theme of waste. The upcoming theme to be launched June 2015 for the 2015/16 cycle will be identity.

The International New York Times is the exclusive media partner of the WYNG Masters Award; Widerhall Fine-Art Photographic is the official exhibition partner; and Panorama is the virtual tour partner.
