City of St. Boniface
Video (10 minutes)
City of St. Boniface is a reflection, as much
figurative as literal, of the artist’s life as a Francophone
woman living and working in an Anglophone world. Using the flowing
waters of the Red and Assiniboine rivers as her point of departure,
the artist assimilates these two divergent worlds and shares what
she holds dearest from both. The result is a series of natural
images juxtaposed against isolated and little-known locales in
St. Boniface. And among those contrasting images, like the flow
of the waves, we discover human activity that is sometimes chaotic,
irreverent and amusing, but that draws us back irresistibly to
a state of contemplation. It is in those moments that the intimate
gaze of the subject finds us, takes us by the hand and directs
us back to our inner selves.
