A parallax is a principle used in mathematics and astronomy to describe how the perception of an object differs according to the observer’s position.

The Parallaxe project involves thirteen francophone artists from across Canada who, from their various personal points of view, explore the many facets of the symbolism surrounding the newly restored bridge linking the French quarter of St. Boniface to downtown Winnipeg. Parallaxe is a unique opportunity to explore, through the visual arts, the geopolitical, cultural and historical aspects of a contemporary francophone neighbourhood and to take a look at how it relates to an anglophone environment.

Using a broad range of contemporary art forms, namely sculpture, painting, installation, performance, photography and video, the artists are creating in situ works, along Provencher Boulevard and near the bridge, over a two-week period. The public is invited to visit the site and observe the artists at work. Thus, multiple points of view will be brought to bear on the artists’ interpretation, yielding parallax.
