Appel de projets 2010-2011

> BOULEVERSER BASCULER REBONDIR

intervention urbaine, etc.).

Connections to Mount Royal

2010 – The 6th annual Paysages Éphémères focuses on connections and correspondence. Here we are en route towards Mount Royal. Throughout time this mountain has always been sacred. Today it is situated in the middle of a city surrounded by the Saint-Laurent river, “the river that walks” as the Amerindians used to say. At its foot the plateau stretches out its avenues and boulevards. Crowned with a cross, this mountain is a prominent landmark for the island of Montreal, orienting us to its high and low areas, its various neighbourhoods, its inhabitants and its passersby. At one point it is a cemetery and sanctuary, at another point it provides a site for large popular gatherings. The mountain evokes the spirit of place. Poised between reality and the imagination, its territory has defined, delineated, and qualified the urban space, from Mount Royal to the present day Montreal.

When on the path to the mountain it offers itself to us, while it permits us to see. Like a garden, it offers changing vantage points, both from the interior and exterior, from the lookout on top of the mountain to views seen from buses that cross from east to west. When on the plateau, the mountain looms in the distance. From the height of the lookout, we observe the city and even more as we find ourselves lost in this floating space, caught between heaven and earth. Whether we embrace in this place, or whether this place inspires us to embrace our history, this ancient mountain is present today with its partially obscured past that the city that has hidden little by little. And then, there is a certain perspective that leads from the mountainside towards the Olympic stadium, this triumphant vestige, resembling a ruin in reverse, which orients us and haunts the Montreal landscape. The space in between is the east-west axis of the city. Well beyond the idea of the Chemin du Roi, this historical trajectory that touches the deeply sensitive human spirit, emerges from time immemorial, day after day defined by the movement of the sun, as we move from one ritual to another, from one temple to another.

This sixth Paysages Éphémères aims to advance the domain of transient and everyday urban landscape art, and at the same time highlight the social and historic value of public space as a meeting place. Therefore a series of routes will be set up – bicycle, metro, bus or pedestrian – to guide viewers through the ephemeral landscapes constructed by the artists. These will be site-specific “lived landscapes”, and where they are installed during the time of the event, they will create places for potential exchanges with the public. Existential scenarios, these interventions will celebrate the role of art in the urban space thanks to the diverse networks of correspondence that will be established. Memory, history, myth and topography of the site will intersect through the networks of correspondence that will lead our footsteps into the city, under the city, outside of the city, into the interstices of the plateau – its vacant spaces, its back alleys, its sidewalks – during the time of transit, the time of a stopover between two stations, before taking another route.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The Curatorial Incubator, v.7 –

FRAK FACEBOOK:
celebrating the anti-social

This year, The Curatorial Incubator, v7 – FRAK FACEBOOK: celebrating the anti-social calls for proposals to participate in this research and presentation project that aims to uncover works that buck the current trend of “social networking” and “living in public” that is so prevalent today. FRAK FACEBOOK: celebrating the anti-social will explore the urge to burrow under the covers, to hide in the basement – in short, the drive to NOT connect, to NOT be nice. Those chosen to participate will hone their curatorial skills in the media arts through workshops, independent research and writing, culminating in a public presentation of their selected titles, accompanied by a fully illustrated publication.

Research phase (June – August 2009) includes:

* workshops conducted by established curators, artists and arts professionals specializing in media arts,
* free access to the vast research facilities on site at Vtape, with over 4000 tapes by 800+ artists and over 2000 articles on video art, and
* practical instruction from various Vtape professional staff to assist in producing a media arts exhibition.

Presentation phase (January – February 2009) includes:

* an exhibition of all the curated programmes with an introduction by the curator, and
* a fully illustrated catalogue of all the programmes with curatorial essays.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: FRIDAY, MAY 29, 2009, 4:00PM

Proposals must include:

* an up-to-date c.v.;
* a statement of intention (1 page in total) that outlines your interest in video and why you want to be part of The Curatorial Incubator, v.7 – FRAK FACEBOOK: celebrating the anti-social and what direction your research MIGHT take you in;
* examples of critical writing your have done (published or non-published)
* examples of any curatorial or organizational work you have done

OTHER REQUIRED INFORMATION TO ACCOMPANY PROPOSALS

* indicate your availability for workshops during June 2009 (June 13-14; 20-21)
* NOTE: If you are from outside of Toronto, please indicate how you would cover the costs of your travel to the workshops (to be held over 1 weekend) and research at Vtape (minimum 1 wk).

And don’t worry; you won’t be held to your original proposal but keep in mind that the jury will need to get an idea of what kind of work you are going to be searching for. Surprises are to be expected along the way. That’s what research is all about.

The City of Calgary Public Art Program invites artists to submit an Expression of Interest for the inaugural Watermarks – A Celebration of the Bow River, taking place June through to September 2010.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: OUTSIDE THE BOX, 2009 CRAFT BIENNALE

APPLICATION FORMS AVAILABLE UNTIL JUNE 15, 2009

Outside the Box – Main Theme

As the theme for the 2009 Biennale, ‘Outside the Box’ proposes that craft be considered or approached as a collective whole, rather than as a series of fragmentary and contending disciplines. To think outside the box, as the phrase goes in the West, is to transcend conditions and boundaries through the human faculty of imagination.

‘Outside the Box’ is where the state of integration becomes attainable; where meetings become possible. The practice of craft is intrinsically the intercommunion between mankind and the immensity of nature. This is a substantializing principle in which all arts and crafts were once unified. What we term craft, as much as any art form, should in itself have the power to unify and represent all human values, in the here and now. To embrace an integrated world, both craftsman and fine artist must think across the spurious divisions of our times, and these reflections should inform the work itself.

The application process: Application forms are available online until Monday June 15, 2009 at the official website: www.cheongjubiennale.or.kr or www.okcj.org ?

The Work
In accordance with the theme, craft entries for the sixth international craft competition will not be categorised by area or specialism. Up to two works may be submitted per application. The maximum dimensions of each work including the sum of its components or separate parts will be 200cm°ø200cm for works in two dimensions, and 150cm°ø150cm°ø150cm for works in three dimensions. Works may constitute either natural or synthetic materials in any combination.

The Higher Institute of Fine Arts (HISK) organizes postgraduate education in Flanders in the field of the audiovisual
and visual arts. It provides approximately twenty-five young artists from Belgium and abroad with a studio of their
own for the duration of two years along with specific, tailor-made guidance. At the HISK, emphasis lies mainly on
individual practice with an international focus. The visiting lecturers are crucial. Artists, curators, critics and
theoreticians pay individual studio visits at regular intervals. There are also frequent visits to significant art events and
lectures, seminars and workshops are provided. The HISK also offers technical facilities and production opportunities.
Thanks to the unique HISK concept, the participants are given every opportunity to invest in critical research of their
work in order to situate it within a broader artistic, cultural and societal context. At the end of the two-year working
period, the participant receives a certificate of ‘Laureate of the HISK’. The HISK is officially recognized as Higher
Institute and is financed by the Flemish Community – Ministry of Education and supported by the City of Ghent. Since
1997, 148 laureates have graduated from the HISK. The largest part of them are currently building up a successful
professional career in the Belgian and international art world. In 2009, the candidate-laureates working at the HISK
come from Canada, Japan, Ethiopia, South Africa, Israel, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Portugal, France, Germany,
the Netherlands and Belgium. An international jury selected them from more than a hundred candidates.

The Open Studios give the candidate-laureates the opportunity to undergo a confrontation with the public and to
generate a great deal of feedback from visual arts professionals. It also offers the audience access to and an insight
into the artistic development of a young generation of artists who will play a part in shaping the future of the arts
landscape.

Aarhus Art Building (Denmark): Call to Visual Artists & Curators, Deadline June 5
OPEN CALL FOR PROPOSALS MODIFICATIONS 2010 Deadline for applications: June 5, 2009 The Aarhus Art Building Center for Contemporary Art J. M. Moerks Gade 13 DK-8000 Aarhus C Denmark http://www.aarhuskunstbygning.dk
The Aarhus Art Building: Open Call for Proposals Visual artists and curators working within all media types are hereby invited to submit proposals for exhibitions of existing or new projects for the year 2010 under the heading Modifications. 50 years ago the Danish artist Asger Jorn opened the doors to an exhibition at the Galerie Rive Gauche in Paris with a series of so-called modifications. The exhibition consisted of twenty old kitsch-paintings with glossy forest lakes and bellowing stags on top of which Jorn had painted a series of spectacular, mythological figures. In spite of the apparent simplicity of the exhibition, which according to Jorn had the aim of declaring the death of painting, a much more complicated process was at stake. On one hand the modifications represented an artistic alteration of stereotypes and in this way expressed a showdown with the monotony of everyday life – a creative staging of everyday life or a bombastic burst of energy in the midst of tedium. On the other hand the paintings also represented a break with the cultural past or – rather – a negation of it, a devaluation resulting in a loss of authenticity. In the art group Situationist International, which Jorn along with among others the French theorist Guy Debord had founded a few years before his exhibition in Paris, this process was referred to as dŽtournement. In short dŽtournement – which directly translated means distortion – is a kind of anti-artistic method where the past – and, indeed, the whole world – is appropriated, annihilated and scandalized. Through this process a way opens out of the meaningless and empty pseudo-society that the artists referred to as the Society of the Spectacle. This notion also contains a definite showdown with art as an elevated activity in order to see the artistic process as something containing a proletarian revolutionary potential. Guy
Debord went as far as to believe that in order to not be swallowed by the meaningless stream of hollow representations of the Society of the Spectacle art had to be critical and negating and in the end renounce every kind of visual activity. In particular, the last part of it was a cause for different opinions among the members of Situationist International, where for instance Jorn never totally rejected the production of artistic objects. The result was that Jorn was excluded from the group along with a number of other members, and finally the group dissolved. Jorn’s modifications stand as some of the last examples of a distorting and scandalizing situationist artistic practise before the total disintegration of the art work and art’s self-destruction. Although the problematic aspects of the notion of art as pure negation have been realized long ago, and since painting obviously has not died, in many ways contemporary critical art praxis still inhabits a bastion similar to that of Jorn at the Galerie Rive Gauche: Between distorting appropriation and revolutionary intervention. Under the heading Modifications the Aarhus Art Building wants to focus on this field and its historical origination. In this way we hope to shed new light on the notion of the artistic process as a way out of the all-encompassing grasp of the Society of the Spectacle. A notion that’s of the same immediate importance today as it was 50 years ago. With this background we now send out an Open Call for Proposals for 2010. We are seeking proposals for group and solo exhibitions plus artistic, documentary and animated films etc. for a special film program under the same heading. Deadline for applications: June 5, 2009. Saint John Transit (NB): Call to Public Artists, Deadline June 19
Saint John Transit announces $145,000 Public Art Opportunity
Saint John, New Brunswick: Saint John Transit is inviting all professional Canadian artists to submit formal proposals to create and install permanent public artwork at Saint John Transit1s new headquarters site (currently under construction), located on the corner of McDonald Street and Loch Lomond Road, Saint John (East), New Brunswick. Saint John Transit is the second city organization to adopt the City of Saint John1s One Percent for Art Program, and follows in the successful footsteps of Saint John Energy1s public art installations.
Chris Titus, Chair of Saint John Transit1s Board of Directors, said: “We1re extremely proud to be among the organizations supporting this marvelous and
innovative program, a program which will benefit all the citizens of Saint John by adding to our community1s uniqueness, vibrancy and quality of life.”
The One Percent for Art Program is part of the Saint John Arts and Culture Policy adopted by Common Council in 2005. The purposes of the One Percent for Art Program are to enhance culture and the arts in Saint John, to provide opportunities for established artists to exhibit quality works of art in public spaces in Saint John, and to enhance public awareness of the visual arts throughout the City. The total amount allocated for Saint John Transit1s selected public art is $145,000.00. One or more works of art may be selected from different artists, in which event this total amount will be divided among the selected artists.
Art submissions may consist of a single piece or multiple elements. Saint John Transit welcomes submissions involving any form of visual art conceived in any durable medium and material, such as: sculpture, mural, graphic art, electronic media, or mixed/conceptual media. The public art should be reflective of the purpose and value of public transportation and be consistent with the LEED designation for Saint John Transit1s new operations centre at the site.
The final selection of the public art will be made by Saint John Transit. The selection process will be facilitated by the Saint John Transit Public Art Advisory Committee (composed of members of Saint John Transit senior management and its board, the project architect, members of the Saint John Community Arts Board, the City1s Cultural Affairs Office and a member of the local arts community), which will also assess and consider recommendations presented to it by a Public Art Jury composed of members of the New Brunswick arts community. It is anticipated that the installation of the chosen public art will take place in the late Fall of 2009 or early Spring 2010.
All interested Canadian artists are encouraged to obtain copies of Saint John Transit1s full Request for Proposals – Public Art Opportunity. The show combines performance art, music, drawings and other creative projects for an interactive exploration of folklore, collective memory, mythmaking, adventure and risk.
We Made a Deal with the Devil is part of Collective Action Expedition 09, a DIY community outreach initiative whose main goals are: to document, engage and learn from people, projects and creative communities involved in independent and artist-run culture in Canada; to explore new opportunities for refreshing cultural exchange and collaboration; to expose new creative work to disparate audiences; and to allow each member of our crew to develop a personal creative project along the way.

FCG encourages innovative proposals that are topical and demonstrate a uniqueness of artistic vision.
Exhibition Opportunities include: Activation: This annual one-week exhibition is open to emerging artists in the London area who have completed their undergraduate/graduate studies in the past five years. Activation supports new London artists by offering an exhibition opportunity paired with workshops led by local art professionals. Participants will learn about portfolio development, exhibition design, installation, lighting, and professional practice. Main Gallery Exhibition proposals: Risk-takers and experimental practitioners are being sought for FCG’s 2010/2011 season. At one tenth the size of our regular space, this is the biggest little miniature gallery in the region! Please note that the sign must not exceed 86cm x 470 cm. The winning design will receive an honorarium and become a prominent fixture on the SoHo strip!
