THEME

ISEA2015’s theme of DISRUPTION invites a conversation about the aesthetics of change, renewal, and game-changing paradigms. We look to raw bursts of energy, reconciliation, error, and the destructive and creative forces of the new. Disruption contains both blue sky and black smoke. When we speak of radical emergence we must also address things left behind. Disruption is both incremental and monumental.

In practices ranging from hacking and detournement to inversions of place, time, and intention, creative work across disciplines constantly finds ways to rethink or reconsider form, function, context, body, network, and culture. Artists push, shape, break; designers reinvent and overturn; scientists challenge, disprove and re-state; technologists hack and subvert to rebuild.

Disruption and rupture are fundamental to digital aesthetics. Instantiations of the digital realm continue to proliferate in contemporary culture, allowing us to observe ever-broader consequences of these effects and the aesthetic, functional, social and political possibilities that arise from them.

Within this theme, we want to investigate trends in digital and internet aesthetics and revive exchange across disciplines. We hope to broaden the spheres in which disruptive aesthetics can be explored, crossing into the worlds of science, technology, design, visual art, contemporary and media art, innovation, performance, and sound.

To elaborate on this general theme we have established the following sub-themes:

RESIDUE

Increasingly, culture operates based on a sophisticated, invisible layer of data that may or may not relate to the physical world, and which leaves a “worldly residue” behind as machines alter our lived experience. These effects go to a wide variety of real world impacts. In addition there is a growing appreciation in the mainstream for the partial, procedural aesthetics produced by internet culture, from animated .gifs, RGB palettes, filters, to cats, unicorns, hair smiles and ugly selfies. What are the current effects of how the physical and the digital are entwined and what are the implications for the future? What does this blending of spheres mean for politics, aesthetics and the social world?

GENERATIVE ART

From strictly autonomous systems that generate complete work to tools for computer assisted creativity, artists and designers have been exploring generative frameworks for decades. In our increasingly computerized world, fronting a tsunami of data, we see an ever-increasing role for generative systems that operationalize autonomous behaviours that are algorithmically determined. We invite work that reflects on human and machine autonomy, aesthetics, and roles. How can we build on ideas of disruption in the framework of generative systems, processes, art and music?

GLITCH

By definition a glitch is small: a transient, short-lived fault that creates disturbance in a system. And yet the effects of a glitch can be monumental: on an aesthetic level a glitch can completely elide the readability of an image; in an airplane a glitch can cause total systems failure leading to catastrophe. One can find glitches in anything: in complex processes, in our images, bodies and lived experiences. A glitch is unstable, something slippery that is hard to find and harder to fix. Glitch is a ping from the system that makes itself visible. While glitch has a history it continues to appear in the contemporary practices of many artists. How can we explore glitch in the frame of cataclysmic, raw disruption? What is the scale of glitch now?

BODY, EMBODY + PERFORM

Our own bodies form lenses of experience, perception, cognition and disruption. How can we exploit the body itself in renegotiating physical habit, cultural experience and embodied texts in the context of embodied innovation, and disruptive technology through the lens of embodiment? What are the key drivers of innovation as it is situated within and upon the body and what are the consequences – social, political, biological, creative, performative, in cyborgs and in fashion? How can we see movement as a driver of knowledge and innovation? What is physical movement now?

PROTOTYPE + DIY

We are in the midst of a revolution driven by DIY culture and participatory cultures of making. These cultures are knit together by networked technology and driven by increasingly available and ever-smaller and more powerful components in the internet of things. Hacking as in: DIY, physical computing, drones, robots, sensor networks,  body-hacking, biofeedback, responsive systems, hacking as a determinant in political and aesthetic strategies, the critical making movement, 3D printing and  rapid prototyping all have a place in this framework. While applied, these technological processes fluctuate in a speculative and creative space.

NEW TEXT

Text reveals language in code, poetics and discourse. How can text, code, and practices in electronic literature be explored in the frame of disruptive change? How do defamiliarization and rupture cross from literature into other spheres? Using text and code, how can we investigate contemporary aesthetics at this moment within bookforms, narrative, electronic, or generative literature? What are the possibilities of creation and destruction using the medium of code and the function of the literary in today’s culture?

SCIENCE + INTERDISCIPLINARITY

Science informs art as art problematizes science. How have disruptive models from other fields created effects for science in areas like citizen science, biology, social culture, fashion, mutation, performance and ecology? How do scientific discourses and metaphors integrate and interfere with other disciplines such as architecture, politics and urbanism?

SOCIAL SPACES: DESIGN, ARCHITECTURE + CITIES

Our social spaces are the backdrops of everyday experience in contemporary design, urban architectures and cityscapes.  We are knit together within the complex framework of our cities, through technological and social networks, patterns of habit and use and by our interactions with objects and people both near to us and half a globe away. Our lives are more entwined than ever, but the networks that hold us together can become fragile. When networks govern both global trade and our relationships with our thermostats, where is the tension between innovation and disruption?

Submissions may take the symposium sub-themes into consideration or may think beyond them under the overarching theme of DISRUPTION.

SUBMISSIONS

We are looking for a broad range of works that respond to these themes, including but not limited to site-specific work, interactive projects, online works, performances, screenings, installations, visual art, electronic literature, works that engage with public space, photography, media art, interdisciplinary projects, and video. There will be a gallery exhibition as well as works that engage with other sites in and around the Woodward’s main campus and elsewhere in Vancouver.

The ISEA2015 committee encourages individual artists and/or creative teams to conceptualize and scale their projects with budget considerations in mind. ISEA2015 will consult with selected artists concerning grants and funding applications.

2014 Call For Submissions HEAR n o w HERE
     Deadline November 15, 2014
Categories: Transmission Art/Radio Art, Electroacoustic Music/Sound Art, Interactive Installation Art

Go to naisa.ca/opportunities/calls-for-submissions/naisa-general-call-for-submissions/ for full information and on-line application

New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) invites artists of all ages and nationalities to submit works on the theme HEAR n o w HERE for consideration in New Adventures in Sound Art’s 2015 programming in Toronto, Canada.

sharawadji is defined as “An aesthetic effect that characterizes the feeling of plenitude that is sometimes created by the contemplation of a sound motif or a complex soundscape of inexplicable beauty.” in the list of sonic effects proposed by Jean-François Augoyard and Henry Torgue in their book Sonic Experience: A Guide to Everyday Sounds (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2005).

HEAR n o w HERE is meant to contemplate on this idea of sharawadji, on the ephemeral quality of that moment in sound, never to happen in quite the same way ever again. Being sometimes full of promise, sometimes quite shocking, often of unknown origins and being of irregular form, it is that sonic experience that cannot quite be described in the same way as it is experienced. But you can try.

Preference in programming will be given to works that respond in some way to the theme HEAR n o w HERE. Individual interpretations or variations on the theme are encouraged, but should be realized with sound as the primary component. NAISA would also like to encourage artists to submit works on the theme HEAR n o w HERE for performance, gallery exhibit, screening, webcast or audio stream, radio broadcast, network or translocal performance, mobile experiences and any other emerging formats that include sound as a primary element. Please complete in full the online submission form and upload your audio by midnight on November 15, 2014. Note: there is a $5 submission fee in order to defray the cost of processing the submissions. All works chosen for presentation will receive an artist fee.

Nonhuman subjectivities – Art Laboratory Berlin

Four to five hundred years ago Copernicus and Galileo ‘removed’ the Earth (and humanity) from the centre of the universe. In Western Philiosophy this coincides with the ‘epistemological turn’ away from cosmology. Western civilization through the enlightenment and into the modern age has continued to place the human experience at the center of existence. Postmodernism, for example, has reveled in human subjectivity, almost to the point of denying all else.

In response to recent cultural and scientific developments Art Laboratory Berlin is initiating an open call for art works, texts and cooperative works with artists, scholars and scientists on the general theme of non-human subjectivities.

Recent philosophical works by i.a. Graham Harman, Quentin Meillasoux, Isabelle Stengers and John Gray have questioned the solely human role of subjectivity that has formed the core of ‘humanism’ over the past five centuries.

We suggest a new multiplicity of viewpoints and an exploration of non-human intelligence, agency and subjectivity, that make up our planet (and beyond).

Possible topics could include

  • Perspectives under threat – non-human viewpoints during the great species die off.
  • Bacterial viewpoints – how microbes communicate, interact and experience the world.
  • Non-human perspectives – intelligence and agency in animals, plants, bacteria.
  • Re-definition of intelligence, agency and sentience in ways that are not anthropomorphic.
  • What do some of these perspectives make of Homo sapiens? e.g.- 90% of the cells in our body do not have human DNA -we are a mere host, a topography, for billions of bacteria and fungi.
  • How about agency (and even intelligence) beyond life – virii or crystals for instance.
  • Are complex data systems, algorithms, artificial intelligence beginning to have points of view, and forms of agency that are beyond human comprehension?

Art Laboratory Berlin is seeking submissions and proposals predominantly for exhibitions, performances and workshops, but is also interested in cooperation with scholars and scientists for the production of a series of lectures, texts and a symposium

The deadline for entries is 15 December, 2014.
Chosen proposals will form part of our 2016-17 programme

Please submit your proposal by email to: nonhumanisms(at)artlaboratory-berlin.org
The application should include a proposal (not longer than 5 pages), a CV and work portfolio (not longer than 10 pages). We ask that you keep the size of attachments altogether under 5MB. For video or other large files we encourage the use of links. (In rare exceptions proposals may be accepted by post, ie snailmail, if a request is first sent by email. If you want to request sending your proposal via post, please title the subject line: POST RQST.

Open call for artworks and art projects
19th Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil: Southern Panoramas

Application deadline: November 16, 2014

www.videobrasil.org.br
There are eleven days left before the registration deadline for the two open calls of the 19th Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil || Southern Panoramas. Submissions of artworks and projects for artwork production are accepted until November 16. The selected artworks will compete for a cash prize of 75,000 BRL and nine Artist Residency Prizes to be undertaken at Associação’s partner organizations.

Artists from the global South, the festival’s target area, may submit up to three artworks and one project for production of an artwork in any support and using any technique (including but not limited to photography, painting, sculpture, engraving, drawing, sound art, video, performance, installation and wearable art). The 19th festival will provide up to 30,000 BRL (each) in funding for the development of four projects, with oversight from members of the Board of Curators leading up to their presentation during the festival. In turn, selected artworks will compete for 75,000 BRL in cash and nine artist residencies to be undertaken in various locations around the world.

The Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil || Southern Panoramas exhibition has cemented its position as a platform for spreading, fostering and pondering art production from the global South—understood as Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, Oceania, parts of Europe and Asia—whose countries strive for novel ways to circulate and publicize their output within the global art scene (read the text of the call to see the list of covered countries). The biennially held festival hosts exhibitions, film screenings, performances, artist residencies, public programs meetings and activities, educational actions and publication launches featuring artists, curators, researchers, critics, journalists and delegates from contemporary art and culture institutions, and focusing on art production from the South. The festival also broadcasts the shortlisted artworks via online research platforms, books, websites, Videobrasil’s social media outlets, as well as self-produced documentary films and TV programs.

The South and its multiple issues will be the focus of the curatorial sections and program of the 19th edition, due from October 6 to December 6, 2015 at Sesc Pompeia (São Paulo), rather than simply of the competitive show as was the case in the past. These issues—which somehow provide the inspiration and the parameters for the selection of artworks and projects to participate in the festival—concern diasporas, hybrid identities, migration flows and travels, first-person accounts, memories, isolation, the social fabric and insularity. To further underscore this perspective, in addition to the open call-based selection of artworks and projects, the 19th festival will feature the works of guest artists who remain fairly unknown at a global level, despite their landmark careers within the Southern scene. The triangulation of Africa, Caribbean and South America lies at the core of their reflections.

There’s still time! Read intently both calls for entries prior to your application and then submit your artworks and art projects for the 19th Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil.

The Spring Exhibition 2015—open call

Submission dates: 13–20 November 2014

Exhibition organized by Charlottenborg Fonden
Exhibition held at Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen

www.springexhibition.com
The Spring Exhibition (Forårsudstillingen) is one of the most important open submission exhibitions in Europe, and has been held annually in Copenhagen since 1857. It originated as an exhibition showing new works by Danish artists and now features participants from many countries. Over the years it has included early works by such renowned international figures as Alvar Aalto, Per Kirkeby, Olafur Eliasson, Superflex and many others. The exhibition is organised by Charlottenborg Fonden.

Submissions
Submissions to the Spring Exhibition 2015 can be made by artists of any nationality and country of residence, aged over 18 years. Submitted artworks may fall into a wide range of genres associated with art, architecture and design—including painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, photography, video, film, performance, design, craft, animation, sound and new media. Submissions are made digitally in the period 13–20 November.

Jury
The jury of the Spring Exhibition is made up of artists and other art and design professionals from the Nordic countries and beyond. It is intended that the Spring Exhibition 2015 will include a broad range of competencies from the fields of art, architecture and design, and the jurors have been selected accordingly. In 2015 the jury among others will be Emil Westman Hertz (artist, Denmark), Philip Groezinger (artist, Germany) and Ditte Hammerstrøm (designer, Denmark). For further information: www.springexhibition.com

Jury awards
As well as selecting the works, the jury also nominates ten artists for two special jury awards: The National Solo Award and The International Solo Award. The awards recognize overall artistic quality and present-day relevance, and are granted on the opening day of the exhibition. The solo awards are accompanied by an invitation to exhibit at the following Spring Exhibition 2016.

Exhibition
The exhibition is held at Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen, one of the largest and most beautiful spaces for contemporary art in Europe, and the dates of the next exhibition are 22 January–1 March 2015. The exhibition allows a considerable number of artists to participate in a major international project and has over the years provided the first significant platform for many emerging artists, while also presenting important new pieces by more established figures.

Test Exposure at the 16th Media Art Biennale WRO 2015, Poland

Open Call
Deadline: December 10, 2014
Application fee: none

The WRO Media Art Biennale is the major forum for new media art in Poland, and one of the leading international art events in Central Europe. Since its inception in 1989, WRO has been presenting art forms using new media for artistic expression and communication, exploring current creative territories and building a critical perspective toward emerging issues in culture, art, society and technology.

The previous edition of the WRO Biennale—WRO 2013 Pioneering Values Biennale—was held at 18 sites around the city of Wrocław: museums, galleries, art house cinemas, department stores, old factory halls and public space, where the works of over 200 artists were shown. The exhibitions, concerts, performances, video projections, installations and conferences were attended by more than 1,000 accredited guests and over 110,000 visitors. The WRO Catalog is available both in print and online. – www.wrocenter.pl/en/biennale-wro/wro-2013-pioneering-values/

WRO 2015: Test Exposure
The aim of the WRO 2015 Biennale is to give exposure to new media art experiments, individual explorations and approaches investigating the potential of art both to affect and to reflect emerging issues in culture.

Artists are invited to submit works that take on the risks of innovation, inquiry and imagination, using original observations, contemporary technologies and procedures in the process of creating inventive forms, interpreting the present and revising the notion of the future (which no longer seems to be a clearly defined project).

The WRO 2015 Test Exposure Biennale is a testing ground for creative, unconstrained investigations of art’s potential to react to the present and to anticipate future challenges.

8th Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale 2015

The 8th Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale 2015
Submission period September 1 – November 7, 2014
Application fee: none

ENTRY OPEN for International Competition
Artists around the world are invited to take part in the international competition organized by the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale 2015 for the spring of next year.

The International Competition of GICBiennale 2015 whole-heartedly welcomes works by artists that re-interpret traditional values of ceramics in truly unique ways, breaking away from the conventional dichotomy of ceramics as design and ceramics as art.  Ceramic artists are pushing the boundaries of ceramics ever outward, and the boundary between ceramics as design and ceramics as art is increasingly becoming blurred.  This competition will focus on the possibilities for ceramic art to expand its territory by discovering artworks of mixed materials and made by techniques of other genres and ceramics fused with other genres of art, not to mention the values inherent to ceramics.

The International Competition of GICBiennale 2015 will be an opportunity to display your imagination and creativity to the fullest.  Come and join this competition that will open the future of ceramics, presenting diverse issues facing us today including political, societal, religious, cultural, and environmental issues along with aesthetic values.

In previous competition, we had 1,875 artists from 71 countries who submitted 3,362 artworks. This competition will focus on the possibilities for ceramic art to expand from its territory.

The Grands Prize will receive $48,100 with solo exhibition opportunity for GICB 2017.

Atelier Topaz – résidence
Opasatika, Ontario, Canada

Call for Letters of Qualification

Parc Downsview Park Inc. (Downsview Park) is seeking an artist or artist team to design and develop public art in three locations throughout the Stanley Greene Neighbourhood. The artist or artist team selected for this commission agrees to enter into an integrated process with the Stanley Greene design team.

Parc Downsview Park Inc. – Call to Artists for Letters of Qualification Three Permanent Public Artworks for the Stanley Greene Neighbourhood along the south-west border of Downsview Park, east of Keele St.

The Stanley Greene neighbourhood, located at the south end of Downsview Park, is the first of five neighbourhoods outlined within the Downsview Area Secondary Plan to be developed on the Downsview Lands. Downsview Park currently owns a large extent of the Downsview Lands, comprised of the urban park and five surrounding neighbourhoods.

The City of Toronto recently rezoned the Stanley Greene Neighbourhood to permit a new residential subdivision. Downsview Park, as the developer, is responsible for construction of municipal roads, sidewalks, landscaping within public right-of-ways, sewers, utilities (water, hydro, and gas), streetlights and intersection signage and traffic lights, as well as a storm water management facility, bioswales, and a municipal park within the neighbourhood. In addition, Parc Downsview Park Inc is obligated to commission Public Art for The Stanley Greene Neighbourhood as part of its Section 37 agreement with the City of Toronto. Downsview Park is seeking an artist or artist team to enter into an integrated design process for public art at an early stage in the development of this community. The candidate should have previous experience working in a collaborative, integrated process with architects, landscape architects, planners and engineers.

The Stanley Greene District Plan and Design Guidelines identifies this neighbourhood as representative of “Downsview’s commitment to creating complete communities that have a focus on a high quality of life, sustainable design, and a contemporary architectural character.” The neighbourhood will be accessible by public transit, and will promote pedestrian activity through ‘whole streets’ that support all types of mobility (walking, biking, rollerblading, driving etc.). The neighbourhood will also implement, sustainable storm water management, expansion of the tree canopy, green building design, and designated bike lanes. Upon completion, this neighbourhood will promote sustainable development and will be distinguished by its vibrant, outdoor, public realm.

Downsview Park views the unique context and parameters of this site as an opportunity to commission one artist or artist team to create three site-specific, public art works that will engage with the innovative design plans for the neighbourhood. The winning artist or artist team will create a cohesive public art proposal for all three sites –, Site A: Downsview Park, Site B: The Stanley Greene Entrance, and Site C:The Neighbourhood Park. The art production budget for these projects, including all fees, materials, technologies, fabrication and installation costs is approximately $700,000.00 total. This budget is broken down for each site, Location A = 50%, Location B = 35%, and Location C = 15% of the total art production budget.

For this first stage of the competition, Downsview Park invites local and international artists or artist teams to respond to this call with Letters of Qualification by submitting the following:

  • Resume(s) in text form
  • Letter of Qualification stating previous projects in which you have participated in an integrated process with architects, landscape architects and or planners. Please include 3 references.
  • 6 to 8 digital images of recent, relevant work in the following format:
    JPG images on a PC-compatible CD-R
Maximum of 1024 x 768 pixels per image
Resolution of 72 dpi per image
Maximum size of 1 MB per image
RGB, sRGB or grayscale colour mode files only (no CMYK)
Caption each with number, your name and title of work, ex: 1_Name_Title
  • An “Image Information” sheet that details per image: number, artist(s) name, title, date, medium, and dimensions. Please be sure the number on the list matches the number of the jpeg image.
  • Be sure to label the CD-R with your name.
  • If desired, include a stamped, self-addressed envelope for return of submission material.

Submissions must be received by Thursday, December 4th 2014 at 5:00 p.m. via mail or hand-delivered to:

Andrew Davies Public Art Consulting
215 Spadina Ave, Suite 414
Toronto, ON M5T 2C7

Submissions by email are not accepted.

Late submissions will not be accepted. If mailing your submission, please make sure it arrives no later than 5pm on Thursday November 20th. Please note: Artists are NOT asked to submit proposals at this first stage of the competition.

The artist or artist team for the Stanley Greene Neighbourhood will be selected through a staged competition process by a specially convened, independent Selection Committee comprised of practicing arts professionals and community representatives.

A short list of 5 artists will be selected from the Letters of Qualification during this first stage. Artists will be considered based on their previous work, an assessment of their ability to work in an integrated and collaborative process, and their proven ability to deliver work of the highest artistic quality on time and on budget. ART GALLERY OF HAMILTON: LEGACY LANDMARK ART COMMISSION

CALL FOR CREDENTIALS: PROFESSIONAL ARTISTS

The Art Gallery of Hamilton (AGH) is inviting professional artists to submit their credentials for consideration as the first stage of a competition to select a $1.2 million Legacy Landmark Art Commission for the Gallery, which is located in the City of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. This monumental artwork will serve as a spectacular and dramatic symbol for the Gallery from its Main Street entrance, drawing the attention of AGH visitors, pedestrians and motorists, inviting them to explore the artwork and visit the Gallery.

Founded in 1914, the AGH is one of Canada’s leading public galleries, with one of the most important permanent collections in the country. The Gallery also enjoys a reputation for being an innovator in programming. The Legacy Landmark Art Commission for the AGH will be sited on Commonwealth Square and the Irving T. Zucker Sculpture Garden. The artwork will raise the visual and physical profile of the Gallery, signaling its presence in the heart of the downtown core and setting a new benchmark for the sculpture collection. It is intended that the commissioned artwork be of impressive scale and presence, of the highest quality and with the power to captivate both the general public and art-appreciating audiences alike.

Public Art Management (PAM) will be managing this process in tandem with the AGH and will manage all competitor communications. Questions must be submitted in writing. The AGH will be responsible for media and other inquiries from the public. (Janet Mowat, Director of Marketing and Communications: janet [arobas] artgalleryofhamilton [point] com).

This Call for Credentials (the “Call”) initiates the first of a three-stage selection process to identify artists for the creation of this urban scale, monumental, highly visible, landmark artwork. The completed commission will comprise a major element of the permanent collection. It is anticipated that the project will be completed by the first half of 2016.
