Vtape
CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Vtape’s award-winning Curatorial Incubator™ returns, inviting applications from emerging curators.

This year, The Curatorial Incubator, v.12 – A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Brat seeks proposals for programs of work that put a contemporary spin on the modernist classic (pace Papa Joyce). Coming of age causes problems, within the highly personal environment of the family as well as in the overtly political milieu of the state. This year’s Curatorial Incubator will delve into this rich atmosphere of change and surface with programs to delight and confound.

Participants in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Brat will have an opportunity to hone their curatorial skills in the media arts in a number of important ways: attending specialized workshops conducted by arts professionals; conducting independent research using the rich resources available through Vtape; writing a curatorial essay for their program of selected titles, with invaluable editorial assistance provided by an arts professional; and, finally, presenting their curated program to the public.

Research phase (August-September) includes:
•    workshops conducted by established curators, artists and arts professionals specializing in media arts,
•    free access to the vast research facilities on site at Vtape, with almost 4000 titles by 800+ artists and over 2500 articles on video art, and
•    extensive access to the Vtape on-line preview resource available only to curators and authorized researchers.
Presentation phase (January – February 2015) includes:
•    an exhibition of all the curated programs with an introduction by the curator, and
•    a fully illustrated catalogue of all the programs with curatorial essays.
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: FRIDAY JULY 18, 2014, 4:00PM
Proposals must include:
•    an up-to-date c.v.;
•    a statement of intention (1 page in total) that outlines your interest in video and media artwork and why you want to be part of The Curatorial Incubator, v.12 – A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Brat
•    examples of critical writing your have done (published or non-published)
•    examples of any curatorial or organizational work you have done
OTHER REQUIRED INFORMATION TO ACCOMPANY PROPOSALS
•    indicate your availability for workshops August 6 (evening) and/or August 9-10, 2014, (days)
•    NOTE: If you are from outside of Toronto, please indicate how you would cover the costs of your travel to the workshops (to be held over 1 weekend) and some additional time for on-site research at Vtape.
And don’t worry; you won’t be held to your original proposal but keep in mind that the jury will need to get an idea of what kind of work you are going to be searching for. Surprises are to be expected along the way. That’s what research is all about.
Send applications to:

Modest Commission for a Mini Web Opera – sketch or prototype…

The context:
The Centre for Research in Opera and Music Theatre at the University of Sussex announces a new research project with Glyndebourne Opera, to be initiated by a two-day event which will be held at Glyndebourne on 24th & 25th October, 2014.

Opera and the Media of the Future will bring together academics and opera professionals to consider the impact of opera cinecasts upon the way that audiences engage with opera today, and to look ahead to see how new digital, web-based and mobile media platforms might shape the future forms of opera.

Commission
We are pleased to announce a modest commission for a small web-based opera work to be ‘premiered’ at the conference in October. This piece will be hosted by the Sussex Reframe website http://reframe.sussex.ac.uk/ It should be ready for testing by the 10th of October and will ‘go live’ on the 23rd.

Deadline for submission of proposals is 7th July 2014. Results will be announced on July 18th. There will be an all-inclusive commission fee of £500 (we are applying for matching funding but £500 is all we can guarantee upfront).

The Brief:
This ‘opera’ will exist online. It will be encountered by its audience via a website. You may include mobile technology if you wish. The opera may be any duration (including very short, as in 2-3 minutes long, since this is only a modest commission) or may not be time-based at all. It may have interactive elements. There will ideally be something to see, and something to hear. Preference will be given to the most innovative re-imaginations of the operatic form for this medium. Preference will be given to the most interesting idea – for this budget, the idea is much more important than a slick / polished finished product. You can think of it as a prototype. You should consider the following questions:
•    What does opera ‘mean’ on this scale and through this medium?
•    How can you engage your audience?
•    What is your work’s relation to the ‘live’?
•    In what sense is it ‘operatic’ – eg are there elements of traditional opera such as singing, plot, spectacle, scenography, etc? Have you significantly re-imagined these elements?
•    Is there a sense (real or implied) that the opera is happening in a real place to which we are linked via the internet or is it taking place entirely in virtual space?

Please send via email, with subject heading ‘Web Opera Proposal’:
•    Proposal (500 words)
•    Description of your technical needs (max 500 words)
•    CV and web links to materials as appropriate

Proposals and queries to Evelyn Ficarra, email to e.j.ficarra at sussex.ac.uk

CALL: We just want to make things

Entry Deadline: 2014-07-12

Exhibition dates: September 12 – October 18, 2014
Reception: Friday, September 26th, 7-10pm

Questions: Email jenclare@whitdelarts.com

Whitdel Arts is currently accepting printmakers’ submissions and proposals for an upcoming exhibition in Fall 2014.

Do you ever feel guilty about calling yourself a “printmaker”? Even though your work may have ventured into different directions and other media, you still find that you think like a printmaker. This exhibition aims to present work in all mediums that have been influenced by printmaking and the way in which a printmaker’s mind thinks. Printmaking has many unique features to its long history. It is very labor intensive and a somewhat tedious way to make work. It is all backwards. These techniques and the natural tendency to think in layers also manifest themselves in other objects printmakers create.

Let’s show just how important and adaptable the ideas of printmaking really are. It may at first be deceiving, as printmakers are many times associated with paper, ink and perfect registration. However, after spending time and a little bit of thinking, the ideas of printmaking will start to surface.

Sometimes as a printmaker, we just want to make things.

This exhibition will be held at Whitdel Arts in September & October, in conjunction with Print City 2014, the Mid-America Print Council Conference hosted by Wayne State University.

transmediale 2015 will take place from January 28 to February 1 at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin. The programme will feature a diversity of different types of work in a thematic exhibition as well as film and video screenings, workshops, performances, and a conference programme. transmediale is always interested in works exploring our complex relation to technology, be it through new or old media.

transmediale 2015 CAPTURE ALL
Call for Works

In a society ruled by algorithms, data is always at play. The drive towards the quantification of everything means that we are all contributing to a state of permanent capture of life into data. As citizens, workers and players of the networks we (often involuntarily) double as sensors for bodies of global data collection, working for the potential extraction of value everywhere and increasing the productivity of everyday life. If work and leisure became mathematically manageable data units for the assembly line production model of industrial capitalism, today’s workers even offer their free time to the extent that it serves a form of unaware labour facilitated by playful technologies and game-like mechanics. Are there still modes of being that resist the imperative of digital capitalism to CAPTURE ALL or is there no option but to play along? If so, are there artistic strategies and speculative approaches that do not play this game of quantification by the numbers? What are the blind spots and gaps of relentless quantification and gamification that can be exploited in order to carve out new ways of living?

Flash crashes caused by out of control algorithms, imprecise “precision strikes”, the unintended consequences of a badly interpreted meta-data, the biometrics of a dog applied to a human being, the mismatch of work and life: not only the productivity but also such evident dysfunctions of the CAPTURE ALL society originate in the constant algorithmic operation on data, in instant data-play and the illusion of boundless control. Playful and participatory structures are purposefully used to render personal information traceable, social relationships exploitable and behavioral patterns recognizable. The events of the most recent past instantly feed the datafied present and are used to predict a probable future in an endless interpretation loop which is the founding principle of a society of control hopelessly out of control.

transmediale 2015 sets out to push against the limits of digital culture’s pervasive logic of CAPTURE ALL and its quantification of life, work and play. We are looking for artistic works, critical media projects and speculative research that delimit modes of existence by operating in and exploiting the blind spots of a datafied society. There is always something in excess that bypasses normalization, even in the most integrated processes of capture. Following this idea, transmediale calls for artistic descriptions and actions that form pro-active responses to phenomena like gamification, quantification and algorithmic control and their ways of making the spheres of everyday life, work and play increasingly indistinguishable. We welcome proposals for action and (-de)constructive counter-action including miscalculation and disproportioning, overidentification and obfuscation, metamodeling and re-purposing, acceleration and exaggeration, de-gamification and counter-gamification. We are seeking responses that outsmart and outplay the logic of CAPTURE ALL and that organise more intimate modes of post-digital life, work and play.

8th Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale 2015

The 8th Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale 2015
Submission period September 1 – November 7, 2014
Application fee: none

ENTRY OPEN for International Competition
Artists around the world are invited to take part in the international competition organized by the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale 2015 for the spring of next year.

The International Competition of GICBiennale 2015 whole-heartedly welcomes works by artists that re-interpret traditional values of ceramics in truly unique ways, breaking away from the conventional dichotomy of ceramics as design and ceramics as art.  Ceramic artists are pushing the boundaries of ceramics ever outward, and the boundary between ceramics as design and ceramics as art is increasingly becoming blurred.  This competition will focus on the possibilities for ceramic art to expand its territory by discovering artworks of mixed materials and made by techniques of other genres and ceramics fused with other genres of art, not to mention the values inherent to ceramics.

The International Competition of GICBiennale 2015 will be an opportunity to display your imagination and creativity to the fullest.  Come and join this competition that will open the future of ceramics, presenting diverse issues facing us today including political, societal, religious, cultural, and environmental issues along with aesthetic values.

In previous competition, we had 1,875 artists from 71 countries who submitted 3,362 artworks. This competition will focus on the possibilities for ceramic art to expand from its territory.

The Grands Prize will receive $48,100 with solo exhibition opportunity for GICB 2017.

7th Festival of Art on Billboards Art Moves, Poland

“More or less freedom?”
Deadline: 30 July, 2014
Application fee: none

We would like to invite you to take part in a Billboard Art Competition. The invitation is addressed to all the interested people, artists and students. There is no entry fee.

The best 10 artworks selected by an international jury panel will be printed and exhibited in the urban space of the city of Torun, Poland in September / October 2014. The author of the winning entry will receive the Main Award in the amount of PLN PLN 3.000 (about EUR 726, USD 984).

The entries can be sent by electronic mail until the 30 July 2014, 00:00 CET to the following address: artmoves(at)tlen.pl

The artwork is supposed to be a creative response to this year’s competition theme: “More or less freedom?”

This competition slogan can be treated as a metaphor of all the processes taking place in the world today. Freedom was and still is a word of great value. At the same time, freedom is a paradoxical word. This is one of the fundamental ideas that drive individual and social life. In the history of mankind, great and wonderful, but also tragic things happened in the name of freedom. Paradoxically, freedom is most easily
defined and appreciated when one tastes its lack (e.g. in a totalitarian state). When we have it, we do not notice it and it rapidly loses its real value – we take it for granted. So, what is freedom then? Is freedom essential to life? Should it be unlimited or have some limits? Can other people limit our freedom – because they also have a right to feel free? Is freedom responsibility or rather doing what one feels like doing?
What do we really need? What do you need? More or less freedom?

Richmond VA’s 1708 Gallery invites artists working in all media and disciplines to submit proposals for InLight Richmond 2014, 1708′s 7th annual public exhibition of light-based art and performance. InLight 2014 will take place on Friday, November 21 in Monroe Park, one of Richmond’s most historically significant public spaces. The juror for InLight 2014 is Denise Markonish, Curator at MASS MoCA.

Proposals should involve, be inspired by, investigate, or interpret themes of light, from light as medium to light as concept. Additionally, 1708 encourages artists to propose projects that respond to and engage with the site.

The geographic and architectural features that characterize Monroe Park and its surrounding streets—pathways, walls, sidewalks, green spaces, trees, benches, statues, building facades, and more—also mark the intersection of Richmond’s social, political and cultural memory.

In addition to technical and production support, an honorarium of $300 will be given to each project. All projects are eligible for the Best in Show Award ($1500), the Most Environmentally Conscious Award ($1000), and the People’s Choice Award ($500).

Monroe Park is a dynamic and expansive site with a long history. The Park is five-sided with crisscrossed pathways that form a radial pattern from the center. It features a fountain and the Checkers House, a round-house in the middle of the park so named for the frequent checkers games that once regularly took place there. There are monuments to Confederate General Williams Carter Wickham and Joseph Stewart Bryan, a journalist and civic leader in Richmond in the late 19th/ early 20th century, and a memorial to veterans of World War II. Recently the park has received a lot of attention as the community begins to contemplate and decide on its future role within Richmond.

The deadline for submissions is midnight (EST), July 15, 2014.

For more information about InLight Richmond 2014 and to submit a proposal, please visit: www.1708gallery.org/inlight.

Arse Elektronika 2014
TRANS*.*
monochrom’s festival on sex and tech!
October 2-5, 2014 in San Francisco, USA.

Call for talks, performances, games, workshops, machines, systems!

*.*

Trans is a Latin noun or prefix, meaning “across”, “beyond” or “on the opposite side”. What does that mean for sex and technology?
– Transitions, translations, transgressions, transistors & transducers, transactions, transmission (specifically sexually transmitted infections), transdermal?
– How does sex change as we age? As we grow, as we mature? And what about old age? Sex in nursing homes? Sex when people have lost much of their sense of identity with Alzheimer’s Disease and the like, but are still horny, still sexual entities? How do pharma and biotech help/monetize this situation?
– Sex under drugs, sex under other altered states? Is Viagra a drug? At what point does a loss of cognitive function take away our ability to consent?
– Transnationality and sex. What about translations and transitions across cultures? For example: Hacking, porn, dissent in Iran? Purity Balls and the American obsession with virginity whatever that really means?
– How does our sex and our perception of sex change with the introduction of new gadgets? Who are the early (sexual) adopters? And what about the adapters? What about (white male) privilege and new gadgets? Google Glass Ceiling?
– SCOT (social construction of technology) research, such as that of Mackenzie and Wajcman, argues that the path of innovation and its social consequences are strongly, if not entirely shaped by society itself through the influence of culture, politics, economic arrangements, regulatory mechanisms and the like. So if its true that technology itself doesnt matter, but the social or economic system in which it is embedded (Langdon Winner), then what does that tell us about the transition from sex tech into the cultural mainstream?
– Is human sexual behavior transforming our planet? What’s the sexual side of the anthropocene?
– Transgression and mechanophila? Is our technological society driven by erotogenic fixation on machinery? What about hardcore pornography such as Fucking Machines? Can this be seen as constituting the limit of current sexual biopolitics?
– Sex puppets, Real Dolls and the Uncanny Valley? A never-ending transition?
– Teagan Widmer’s latest app, Refuge Restrooms, highlights the importance of providing safe public accommodations for trans people. How can apps like Widmers help with tasks that most people take for granted, like the ability to use the bathroom?
– Is trans* a controversial label online? How do we develop language-theory-activism in general? Programming languages are designed to be inclusive of “trans” in a broad sense for both binary and non-binary gender modalities. Does it have transmisogynist qualities?
– Feminists, among other critical scholars, have long argued the problems with the notion of the Transcendental. Focusing on the transcendental moves our attention away from the day-to-day struggles involving the material and instead replaces it with transcendent ideas and ideals. How is this manifested through issues of sexuality and technology? What can we do about it? What are the power struggles involved, positionalities afforded and relationships to, that transcendental modes of thought afford for socio-economically marginalized populations? Can we compare and contrast notions of transcendence alongside notions of immanence? What is the role of the body and embodiment with respect to transcendentalism? What are the implications of transcendental for power? Grassroots activism? Citizens’ movements? Open source? Hacking? Can we have visions of the future without being transcendental?
– And, last but not least, since sex is a pretty biological thing (insofar as things are biological things), we want to remind of genetics with our theme. Genetic transformation/translation/transcription/transmission.

Résidences de coproduction en art infiltrant / 3e impérial

1er octobre 2014

Rufus Stone Residency (4 weeks/London, mid Sept-mid-Oct 2014)
Deadline: Midnight 10 July 2014
Fee:  No Application Fee
FOR FURTHER INFO AND TO APPLY GO TO: rufusstone.submittable.com/submit

This is a new London-based residency, of four weeks, suitable for self-directed and/or research based projects,  open to artists at any stage in their career in any medium (including but not limited to visual art, writing, video, movement, performance, social practice etc.).

We are especially interested in working with artists who have strategies for reaching audiences without the mediation of traditional institutions or structures.  We are looking for artists who would prefer to have a straightforward connection to society without having their work regarded as mere craft.

We wish to support and learn from artists looking “to produce a different kind of art” who realize it is necessary to step through the standardization and professionalization it promises, and discover a way to access whatever may be on the other side—even if what one finds does not resemble art as we currently understand it… those that believe that art can not be reduced to an economic activity.[1]

This very new residency currently has no external funding support.  It is based on artists enabling and supporting other artists. Rufus Stone is a non-political and non-grant-making collaboration of artists and curators.

This is a self-directed programme suitable for proactive and very independent artists.  We take an enabling role and we are very open to taking a collaborative role depending on the project.

Included:

Central London accommodation (in the home of an artist)
Possible rural accommodation (in the home of an artist)
Utilities and administrative costs
Access to wifi; a 24” Mac with Photoshop
Support and assistance in accessing further resources
In person and “virtual” discussions with artists and curators concerning work in progress

Resident provides:

Transport costs to/from London and local transport expenses
Food (breakfast provided)
Pocket money and all project funds

THERE IS NO STUDIO PROVIDED WITH THIS RESIDENCY.  However,  If the work results in a public event, it is possible to use the flat for a reading, talk, installation etc subject to discussion.

Artists are encouraged to seek their own funding through independent grant applications. If selected, the residency can be used as a “matching” contribution in grant applications.  We are willing to be very flexible on dates to accommodate funding arrangements and can ‘hold open’ a residency slot for those in the process of securing grant funding.

Health and other insurance:  The resident is responsible for securing travel insurance which includes health coverage, and will sign a contract releasing Rufus Stone from any liability, personal or otherwise.

Deadlines and dates:  Whilst this is an open call, our first consideration period will commence from midnight 10 July 2014 for residencies to begin mid-September. Applicants will be informed by 30 July.

Selection committee:  A selection committee made up of 4-6 US and London-based artists and curators will consider applications. Unfortunately we will not be able to provide feedback on applications.

Criteria for selection include the following:

Quality of the proposal and prior work
Responsiveness in regards to the specific context of an artist enabled residency (i.e. evidence of being self reliant, pro-active and independent)
Feasibility of the project
Evidence of grant or other funding to cover additional costs
Potential of the recipient of the residency to enable other artists in some capacity
