RENCONTRES ARTISTIQUES DE CHAILLOL
APPEL A PROJET ARTISTIQUE

Milano Film Festival: Call to Documentary Filmmakers, Deadline
Apr. 15
State (T)error was first organized in 2005 as an out-of-competition section at Milano Film
Festival. It reflected the will to tell and show authentic stories, to present documentaries
depicting a complex pattern of injustices and crimes committed by .democratic. governments
and by the system of powers; it reported how governments cloak with concepts like freedom,
safety, and peace a precise strategy of terror and violence, of speculation and war, resulting in
wealth for few and misery for entire countries. September 11th-20th 2009
These stories expose the complicity of the media with the system of powers and in manipulating
the public opinion through doctored news reports. They expose the lie of a “war on terror” that
avails itself of terror strategies against civilians, causing millions of people to die or be displaced,
only to control resources and areas of strategic importance.
These documentaries show the policies of multinational companies, that have now got to rule
the world: the race for the privatization of natural resources, such as water and energy, that
belong to everyone; the management of the most important industrial branches (the war,
pharmaceutical, agricultural, and building industries), only acting in their own interest, and
aiming at increasing profits that many governments eventually share. These policies create a
deep unbalance in the relationships between countries, and threaten the survival of all of us.
They are the source of wars, hunger, illnesses, and environmental catastrophes.
Incessant advertising persuades people of the utter importance of buying things in the name of
wealth, often creating a non-existent need and inducing unrestrained consumerism, addiction,
and ultimately the inability of consumers to overcome or fight against this mechanism.
These documentaries report the accounts of immigrants, their dramatic travels, life in their
countries of origin and of adoption; they report how they fear us, and how we fear them. They
report of work deaths, brought about by the lack of basic safety conditions and tolerated with
such indifference on the part of people responsible; they report of the militarization of cities, of
nuclear power stations, of the compulsory tax destined for military spend, of soldiers armed for
peace missions, of religious and political fundamentalism, and of violence against women.
But they also report of encouraging stories of groups and peoples who have successfully fought
oppression and injustices.
For the fifth edition of State (T)error we are looking for these stories, and for many more.

Founded in 2004 by a group of local visionaries, the HUB-BUB Artist-in-Residence Program provides three pre-professional and emerging young visual artists and one creative writer the opportunity to “live free and create” for 11-months in downtown Spartanburg, SC.

Each artist is provided with a large studio apartment that is located above The Showroom (HUB-BUB’s gallery and performance space) and a bi-monthly stipend of $300 in exchange for 15-20 hours a week of work helping out with HUB-BUB duties and getting involved in community based art projects.  HUB-BUB duties include setting up and bartending for concerts, keeping a regular HUB-BUB blog, hanging art shows, helping with fundraisers, assisting in gallery maintenance and more.  Community projects may include collaborating with other local non-profits, initiating community art projects, participating in open-to-the-public studio time and other creative charity work. Residents will also be encouraged to donate a piece of work to HUB-BUB for archival purposes.  The writer-in-residence additionally will serve as an apprentice with the award-winning Hub City Writers Project , an independent press and literary arts organization.

All residents will be between the ages of 20 and 35 upon application. The ideal candidates for this program are challenging, progressive artists who are self-directed, motivated, and passionate about creating new art.  Our facilities will limit certain applicants like welders, potters, and glass artists who require excessive space or special tools. The live/work spaces will be best suited to artists who work in genres which do not require major equipment, such as (but not limited to) painters, bookmakers, paper artists, filmmakers and computer artists. Photographers are welcome to apply; however there is no dark-room facility in the complex. Artists are responsible for all equipment that they do require (ie. Film artists must provide editing equipment, etc.).

The artists will have an opportunity to showcase and sell their work in our gallery space during their stay, with special gala events highlighting both their existing work at the beginning of their residency and their new work at the end of it.

The next residency will begin June 1, 2009 and to end April 30, 2010. Each residence is worth approximately $20,000, as all Artists-in-Residence will have rent and utilities underwritten for the full 11 months plus be paid a stipend for their work with either HUB-BUB.COM or The Hub City Writers Project.

Queerness weaves the threads of our physical, social and moral existence together into a multi-dimensional fabric of community and our selves.

As queer artists we continue to create complex identities and imagine new modes of address through a myriad of queer tactics, textures and sensibilities.

What are the threads that bind, mend and sometimes unravel this spectacular fabric of queer art? How does this queerness operate? How does it present itself? How do we fashion, perform, subvert or display queerness in our art and lives?

We hope to explore these themes in art in all mediums that incorporate (in the broadest sense of these ideas): sewing, knitting, weaving, braiding, binding, knotting, textiles, quilting, patchwork, costuming, fashion and fashion events, drag, second skins, performance art, woven texts, blogs, digital networks and communities.

THREADS curatorial committee includes: Tirza Latimer, Rudy Lemcke, Matt McKinley, Pamela Peniston, Allison Smith, and Tina Takemoto.
