L’Association des groupes en arts visuels francophones (AGAVF) présente les événements de ses quinze centres d’artistes et galeries membres à travers le pays et compile les appels de dossiers en arts visuels, arts médiatiques, performance, art public qui s’adressent principalement aux artistes et parfois aux commissaires.

Dans le cadre des célébrations entourant le 150^e anniversaire du Canada, en 2017, le Programme d’art public de la Ville d’Ottawa tiendra une saison d’exposition thématique spéciale et étudiera en priorité les propositions des demandeurs inuits, métis et issus des Premières nations.

Ainsi, pour souligner ce jalon important, la Ville invite les artistes professionnels, les collectifs d’artistes et les commissaires d’exposition du domaine des arts visuels, des arts médiatiques et des métiers d’art à soumettre une proposition d’exposition en lien avec le thème général de la cartographie. Les propositions reçues seront soumises à un comité d’évaluation par les pairs et celles qui seront retenues seront présentées à la Galerie Karsh-Masson en 2017.

La cartographie englobe les façons de connaître, de structurer et de présenter le monde et la place que nous occupons dans celui-ci et par rapport aux autres. Elle nous aide à tracer notre passé et notre avenir. Au-delà du sens premier du terme, la cartographie désigne aussi des réalités biologiques, psychologiques et numériques, entre autres. Elle peut être physique, culturelle et affective. Tout comme l’art, la cartographie est un processus en perpétuelle transformation.

Cahier Folie/Culture nº 11

Québec, le 8 février 2016 – Folie/Culture est à la recherche de collaborateurs et collaboratrices intéressés à soumettre des textes et des créations visuelles pour son 11^e numéro du Cahier Folie/Culture, qui porte sur la thématique de La normalité ostentatoire.

Avec ce nouveau Cahier, Folie/Culture propose d’ouvrir une brèche dans la normalité. Puisque la normalité est par définition drabe, comment la rendre ostentatoire ? Il s’agit de porter un regard sur les formes inouïes comme sur les choses banales et usuelles, bref, de rendre ostentatoire ce qui, par ailleurs, est reclus et sans éclat. Il n’y a plus rien dans le placard !

Rappelons que les Cahiers Folie/Culture sont des objets d’édition audacieux à périodicité aléatoire. Se rapprochant du livre d’artiste, leur forme se démarque par son originalité toujours en rapport avec la thématique abordée. Publications surprenantes, ces Cahiers se donnent à regarder, à toucher, à soupeser, à lire et aussi à entendre…
Contraintes formelles :

• Les œuvres plastiques originales devront être bidimensionnelles, dimensions 8 ½ x 11 pouces (bleed), format JPG ou TIF, résolution minimale 300 dpi.
• Les textes originaux ne pourront excéder deux feuillets et devront être en format Word si envoyés par Internet.

INTERSITE VISUAL ARTS FESTIVAL: 2016 CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Intersite Visual Arts Festival (IVAF) is a collaborative city-wide event
presented annually by several contemporary art centres in Calgary, AB,
including: Alberta Printmakers, EMMEDIA Gallery & Production Society, Esker
Foundation, M:ST Performative Art Festival Society, Stride Gallery, The New
Gallery, TRUCK Contemporary Art in Calgary, and Untitled Art Society.

The mandate of IVAF is to advocate for contemporary art practices outside
of the traditional gallery setting. Through the decentralized presentation
of exhibitions, happenings, and performances, the festival actively engages
unsuspecting audiences in the public sphere. IVAF seeks to create a
supportive and receptive climate to foster the development and innovative
presentation of contemporary art.

OPEN CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

For IVAF 2016, occurring from November 2 – 5, 2016, we are seeking works
that occupy alternative spaces, engage different publics, and challenge
traditional forms of presentation. IVAF 2016 will be comprised of invited
projects and works selected from this call for submissions that express a
clear proposal in response to our mandate, and demonstrate a reasonable
necessity for the work to be presented outside of a traditional gallery
setting. Whether you are thinking about biking performances, transit
bus-based actions, or off-site happenings, we welcome submissions that
challenge our capacity to present contemporary art and transform the
cultural landscape of Calgary.

All participants will be paid a professional fee for their contribution.

The following materials should be included in your application:
1. Proposal: Describe your project. Provide complete details of your
geographic and material requirements, including any special equipment and
technical needs. Please indicate a desired location and time when applicable.
2. Support: Please include up to ten pieces of additional support material,
including digital images, videos, text excerpts, or audio clips alongside a
corresponding numbered inventory list detailing all necessary descriptors.
We will review up to a maximum of five minutes of time-based work.
3. Curriculum vitae: Describe your artistic background and include all
relevant contact information.

IVAF accepts digital submissions via email. Please format all written
materials as a single .pdf document. Images must be numbered .jpg files no
larger than 1 MB in size. We accept links to video and audio work hosted
online. Emailed applications must be submitted in a single .zip folder
containing both documents and images.

+15 Call for Submissions | MAY 15

The New Gallery (TNG) is committed to providing opportunities and venues
for artists that foster social and political creative practices, while
engaging and educating audiences through contemporary art. TNG’s +15 Window
is located in the Arts Commons building (205 8 Ave. SE) on a high-traffic
pedestrian walkway. The +15 Window is a shallow vitrine best suited for
small-scale installations and/or displays. All exhibitions are eight weeks
in duration. A floor plan of the space can be found here.

Surrounded by similar windows programmed by Calgary’s other artist-run
centres and visual arts organizations (TRUCK Contemporary Art in Calgary,
Stride Gallery, Untitled Art Society, Alberta Printmakers, the Marion
Nicoll Gallery, the University of Calgary Faculty of Arts, andAlberta Craft
Council), the +15 Window provides a flexible exhibition platform capable of
engaging Calgary’s diverse downtown audience as well as the local artistic
community. Applicants should familiarize themselves with this unique space
prior to submitting. TNG is most interested in proposals that make specific
use of the +15 Window’s highly-public location in our city’s core.
Exhibiting artists are offered a fee of $439 to show their work
(commensurate with 2016 CARFAC Fee Schedule – A.1.6), and a modest budget
for shipping costs, negotiated on a case-by-case basis.

Main Space Call for Submissions | MAY 29

The New Gallery (TNG) is committed to providing opportunities and venues
for artists that foster social and political creative practices, while
engaging and educating audiences through contemporary art. TNG’s Main Space
is located at 208 Centre St SE in Calgary’s Chinatown. Main Space
programming comprises exhibitions by artists, collaborators, curators, and
other cultural producers from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
Please note that TNG accepts proposals for solo exhibitions, but may also
consider individual artists for inclusion in a curated group show. Main
Space exhibitions range from four to six weeks in duration. Presently, TNG
is seeking proposals for the 2017-18 programming year. A detailed floor
plan for the Main Space can be found here.

Exhibiting artists are offered a fee of $1900 to show their work
(commensurate with 2016 CARFAC Fee Schedule – A.1.1) Additionally, TNG
provides both accommodations and financial resources to aid artists in
managing shipping and travel costs. Details of this budget are determined
on a case-by-case basis.

Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography is a non-profit artist-run centre committed to photography as a multi-faceted and ever-changing art form, offering a unique platform for reflection and dialogue on contemporary photography and its related practices. We encourage exhibition proposals from local, national and international artists at all stages of their careers who are innovative in their use of materials and approach to photography.

Submission Guidelines

Please submit the following items by email as a zipped folder to submissions (at) gallery44 (dot) org. Please format images as jpegs and documents as PDFs. The total size of the email should not exceed 12MB:

1. 10-12 images (both single image views and installation views, if applicable) representing a recent body of work or a specific project. Image files should be no more than 1200 pixels wide.
2. An image list indicating artist name, title, medium, dimensions in inches and year.
3. Video submissions should be sent as a link to a host site (youtube, vimeo). We do not accept video files.
4. A maximum one-page artist’s statement or other written description.
5. A maximum one-page physical description of the proposed exhibition, including the number of works, the space required, equipment needed and/or provided, and any installation requirements.
6. A maximum three-page curriculum vitae, resume or biography of the artist(s). CV must include full contact information. And any other supporting material you would like to include (web links, reviews, catalogues, etc.)
7. Clearly indicate if you are applying for the gallery or vitrines.

• We do not accept physical submissions
• We encourage all applicants to familiarize themselves with our recent programming
• Be sure to zip all files together including images and supporting documents
• Gallery 44 welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with other arts and community organizations
• Gallery 44 gives priority to works that have not been exhibited in Toronto
• Incomplete submissions will not be accepted
• Due to the volume of submissions we receive please allow 4 to 6 months to receive a response
• We are unable to provide feedback on submissions

FOREST CITY GALLERY

Forest City Gallery invites Ontario-based artists to submit proposals for inclusion in a thematic-exhibition (title TBA) taking place Friday, September 16, 2016 – Thursday, October 20, 2016. An opening reception for this exhibition will be hosted on Friday, September 23rd from 7 – 10 PM. This call is medium specific, we are accepting submissions in new media, video and photography only.

About the exhibition:

If identification is to go anywhere, it has to be with this material aspect of the image, with the image as thing, not as representation. And then it perhaps ceases to be identification, and instead becomes participation.

At its simplest, portraiture might be understood as a representation of one’s likeness, whereby the artist attempts to discern and distill the essence of their sitter. Embedded in this definition of portraiture is the notion that authenticity is certain. For exhibition at Forest City Gallery we are looking for submissions that acknowledge the futility of attempting to portray identity through static figurative representations. Instead, we are looking for submissions that investigate constitutions of identity outside of external representations.

In these instances, portraiture can be understood as an embodiment of self, of one’s actions over a duration of time—a participatory enactment. Further to expanding and complicating traditional notions of portraiture, we are asking artists to focus on how these representations can often be disingenuous. How might external pressures shape identities (the performing of gender roles), how has social media facilitated fetishization of these images and promoted misrepresentations and embellishments (online dating profiles, cvs, etc.). This call is medium specific, we are accepting submissions in new media, video and photography only.

We are interested in proposals that address this topic in a creative and thoughtful manner. Artists are paid in accordance to CARFAC fees. This group exhibition will include 4 – 6 artists. Please submit 1 – 5 works for inclusion in this show, with a maximum of 8 images. Images should be no larger than 5 MB and titled: 01artworktitlelastnamefirstname.jpg

THIRD SHIFT Public Art Projects — Saint John, N.B. – Call for Proposals for Temporary Art Installations and Performance Deadline: Monday, May 2nd, 2016

THIRD SHIFT is a nighttime exhibition of public contemporary art projects presented by Third Space Gallery. THIRD SHIFT aims to inspire Saint John residents to reimagine their city, reclaim vacant and under-utilized areas and engage with the surroundings of the uptown built environment. Participating artists will reflect on the area’s cultural landscape and historic architecture to develop their projects and exhibit the works. This night-time art experience will be unique to Saint John.
THIRD SHIFT will highlight the work of emerging and established artists who cross disciplines and boundaries in their examinations of contemporary culture. All activities established by THIRD SHIFT are free and open to the public. This year’s event will take place on August 19th, 2016.
Third Space Gallery is pleased to offer a two-week residency program as a supporting partner of THIRD SHIFT 2016. Artists may apply for the THIRD SHIFT Residency in addition to submitting a project proposal. One artist will be selected through an open call for submissions to spend two weeks, from August 5th to August 19th, developing a site-specific project for THIRD SHIFT 2016. Guidelines for THIRD SHIFT Projects
• Submissions will be reviewed and selected by a committee of Third Space Gallery members.
• Projects primarily of a commercial nature will not be accepted.
• Projects must be temporary or ephemeral in nature.
• Third Space Gallery will be paying selected artists an honorarium fee in
accordance to the 2016 CARFAC fee schedule. The fee will be paid upon
completion of the event.
• Maximum two people per project submission.
• Third Space Gallery will not supply technical equipment, but will happily
provide power sources and electrical cords.
• Third Space Gallery will not be covering costs of shipping materials,
travel, or accommodations.
• Additional project funding may be available for artists depending on Third
Space Gallery’s available financial resources. Funding required must be
outlined in your proposal.
• THIRD SHIFT happens rain or shine! Projects must be adaptable to
inclement weather.
Guidelines for THIRD SHIFT Residency
• Submissions will be reviewed and selected by a committee of Third Space Gallery members.
• Proposed residency work must fit within the THIRD SHIFT project guidelines (see above).
• Third Space Gallery will be paying the selected artist an honorarium fee and presentation fee in accordance to the 2016 CARFAC fee schedule, as well as travel and accommodation costs for the duration of the residency.
• Maximum one artist per residency.
• The selected artist will have full access to studio space for the duration of
the residency.

Submissions should include:
• Project description
• Technical requirements (Third Space will not be providing technical equipment
in excess of electrical cords and power sources)
• Plan for installation
• Preferred location (general or specific)
• Possible safety concerns
• Artist statement (maximum 250 words)
• Maximum 10 images (JPEG, 300 dpi)
• Numbered image list, including title, medium, dimensions, year (where

En el año 2016 el Encuentro Performance para la vi(d)a. María Teresa Hincapié llega a su séptima versión bajo el tema “ EL CUERPO Y SU MEMORIA”

¿Qué pasa cuando el cuerpo se detiene únicamente en el “yo”, en el egoísmo, en lo pasajero?

Hay fuerzas e intenciones que nos adormecen para que no nos importe qué pasa a nuestro alrededor, donde nos humillan, nos pisotean y acabamos por creer que lo importante es favorecernos, salir a flote, ignorando a los otros, nuestros compañeros de viaje, nuestros congéneres.
A este afán de supervivencia sobreviene el olvido de normas, leyes de convivencia y solidaridad.
No importa el caos social, nos acostumbramos a mantener la vida que nos imponen, con conflictos armados, el desplazamiento, la violencia, la corrupción, el despojo. Un grupo de poderosos nos condenan a limitaciones mentales y nos hacen conformistas.

Fundación Calle Bohemia convoca a los artistas del performance tanto Colombianos como de otras nacionalidades, para participar en el 7º Encuentro Performance para la vi(d)a. María Teresa Hincapié, que se desarrollará en la ciudad de Armenia, Quindío. Colombia, durante el mes de Agosto del año 2016. Se trata de una apuesta por la vida y la convivencia. El Encuentro ha tenido la vía pública como escenario: Plaza de Bolívar, Pasaje peatonal de cielos abiertos, Parque Sucre y diferentes espacios de la ciudad.
Las performances también podrán realizarse en espacio cerrado, si así lo requiere el artista.
El Encuentro también es un espacio de formación y de reflexión teórica, por lo cual se programan paralelamente dos seminarios sobre la práctica de la performance y se desarrolla una serie de talleres de performance, dirigido a artistas, estudiantes de artes visuales y público interesado.
Otra etapa importante es la implementación de la Cátedra de Performance María Teresa Hincapié, en instituciones educativas pùblicas con los grados 11 del departamento del Quindío.
Al finalizar el Encuentro se propiciará un conversatorio con los artistas invitados, artistas locales, público interesado y estudiantes del programa de artes visuales de la Universidad del Quindío.

Condiciones y lineamientos de participación:

– La participación es individual, por lo cual deben asistir sin acompañantes al evento. De no poder cumplir con esta condición, absténganse de enviar la propuesta.

– Los artistas deben estar presentes en todas las acciones programadas en el Encuentro los días 24, 25, 26 y 27 de Agosto de 2016 en la cuidad de Armenia, Quindío. Colombia.

– La organización, curaduría y selección para este Encuentro estará a cargo de Fundación Calle Bohemia.

– Proporcionar las entrevistas necesarias, al equipo de producción audiovisual, quienes serán los encargados de la realización de las memorias del Encuentro.

Les Rencontres Internationales Sciences & Cinémas (RISC) ont pour objectif de faire découvrir des films contemporains et de susciter des rencontres entre des cinéastes, des scientifiques et un large public, notamment le jeune public.

À la fois production in situ et diffusion in progress, ce format proposé par #Glassbox pourrait s’apparenter à une résidence rendue visible. Les rencontres régulières qui jalonnent le temps de production permettent à l’artiste de faire publiquement état de l’avancée du projet.

Ce qui constitue le corps de l’exposition n’est plus seulement le résultat final du travail de l’artiste : sa forme achevée est saisissable à l’occasion du vernissage/finissage de résidence, qui clôt son devenir dans Glassbox comme l’oraison funèbre scelle une biographie.

Le temps de visibilité s’attache surtout à présenter le déroulé du projet, ce cheminement jubilatoire qui permet le passage intensif du rien à l’objet. Pour la résidence d’été, l’artiste est invité à prendre possession de l’espace d’art du 4 rue Moret aifn d’y développer un projet de construction spécifique. Tout en permettant de rendre visible un processus de fabrication percutant, le projet doit prendre en compte le contexte et la morphologie de la galerie.

Logée dans un quarter aux influences et rythmes de vie multiples, et dessinée par les FREAKS Freearchitects, Glassbox perce un trou dans les façades de la rue Moret : entre sa vitrine qui, en se repliant intégralement, met littéralement le lieu dehors, et son sol en asphalte qui prolonge le trottoir à l’intérieur, l’espace redistribue les coordonnées du point de rencontre entre sphère publique et sphère privée.

Artist-in-Residence Program of ARCUS Project which aims to support the artistic activities of emerging artists was launched in 1994 by Ibaraki Prefectural Government as its main organizer. In its 21 years history, ARCUS Project has invited 91 artists from 29 countries/regions, and supported their artistic projects and researches during the residence. A number of previous residency artists are now known as cutting- edge artists in the international art scene.
ARCUS Project Artist-in-Residence Program has focused more on the “process” of activities. Therefore, they are looking for a project which does not regard final presentation as a goal, but tries to conduct a site-specific research/project within a certain period of time. It is also expected that the research / project is open to public for sharing the process and collaboration. The proposed projects are supposed to be temporary works with which the applied area can be returned to its original state. Since their program is aimed at promoting international exchanges, applicants should possess national of a country other than Japan. Not more than one artist will be selected from one country/region.

As “ARCUS” means “gate” in Latin, the artist in residence project aims to be the entrance for participants to create art around the world, and act for a center for artistic activities. The Ibaraki Prefectural Government launched ARCUS Project in 1995 to promote creative investigation and the development of communication through contemporary art. The core activity in ARCUS is the artist-in-residence program, inviting national and international young artists to stay in Ibaraki Prefecture and engage in creative work. The programs also provide the local people with the opportunity to enjoy cultural exchange with the international artists.

Accomodation Information
Each artist will be provided with a furnished studio apartment that is equipped with minimum electric appliances near the studio.

Studio Information
The artists are provided with a studio in a converted elementary school building, which is now used as a community center named “Moriya Manabi no Sato”. The building is shared with the local residents who use the facilities for cultural, athletic, and community activities.

The studio area is 67.5 sq.m. (W:9m x D:7.5m x H:3.3m) and equipped with internet circuit (no computer) and air conditioner.  Fax and telephone (domestic calls only) are available for share at the Studio office.

Technical Information
Although minimum tools (ex. drill, screwdriver, hammer, saw etc.) are available, studios are not equipped with professional facilities such as workshop, studio for shooting or editing room. ARCUS also cannot provide SLR photograph camera, video camera and tripod.

Location
The residence program takes place in Moriya City, Ibaraki Prefecture. Moriya City is located at the southern edge of Ibaraki Prefecture, and about 40 km from Tokyo. Access from the local train station to central Tokyo is approximately 35 minutes by express train. It is a town with a population of approximately 60 thousand people.

The Aomori Contemporary Art Centre (ACAC), Aomori Public University opened in December 2001 as an artistic institution centered on an ‘Artist in Residence’ (AIR) program. The city of Aomori supports international exchanges focused on creating new culture, by supporting artists’ creative activities centered on the artists-in-residence project, and deepening city residents’ interest in local culture by providing a space where residents and artists can meet through exhibitions, workshops and other activities.

Outcome
During the residency, artists must participate in the following exchange programs:
Artist Talk (Gallery Talk); Lecture, Workshop; Local traditional craft workshop.
*The host will provide and pay the cost for any materials used in such exchange programs.

ARTISTS from abroad are required to present the results of their work during their stay in Japan in a language other than Japanese within 1 year from the day they leave Japan due to a new grant under the 2014 Program to Create International Points for the Promotion of Arts and Culture provided by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. For example,
holding an exhibition, performance, lecture, or workshop in a country other than Japan;
publishing results of the artist’s stay in Japan in a language other than Japanese through media such as newspapers, magazines, or on the Internet.

Accomodation Information
ACAC will provide the artist with residential facilities in ACAC during the program period (a private single room / 19.44㎡). The artist must share bathroom and kitchen facilities. The facilities are self-catering.

PROGRAMME DE RÉSIDENCE

Vidéographe s’intéresse au développement des formes issues de la vidéo expérimentale et qui embrassent une multiplicité de mode de production et de diffusion formant aujourd’hui le champ plus large de l’image en mouvement. Le programme de résidence de Vidéographe vise à soutenir l’expérimentation et la création d’œuvres qui renouvèlent et questionnent cette discipline. Les artistes sélectionné.es se verront accordé un cachet de 1 750$, ainsi que l’accès à nos équipements de tournage, de montage et de diffusion pour un montant maximal de 10 000$ calculé au tarif membre. Ils ou elles disposeront également d’un maximum de 20h de soutien technique selon la nature du projet et sur rendez-vous.

Nous acceptons les propositions de monobandes, d’installations, d’œuvres destinées à être diffusées sur Internet ainsi que de toute autre forme. Les œuvres doivent toutefois être indépendantes et non commerciales. Ce programme s’adresse aux artistes de la relève aussi bien qu’aux artistes professionnels. Animé par la conviction que notre discipline doit s’enrichir de discours et de points de vue multiples, nous encouragerons les artistes issus de groupes traditionnellement sous-représentés, de minorités ou de groupes marginalisés à soumettre un projet.
Afin de soumettre une proposition, il n’est pas nécessaire d’être membre de Vidéographe, cependant, si votre projet est accepté, nous vous demanderons de devenir membre. Lorsque qu’elle sera complétée, Vidéographe se réserve le droit de visionner l’œuvre en exclusivité pour évaluer si elle pourrait être incluse à son catalogue et distribuée. L’acceptation dans le programme de résidence n’implique cependant pas que votre œuvre sera automatiquement prise en distribution.

Arts Fellowship, 2016 – 2017

The Living Arts Centre invites new graduates of arts institutions to submit applications for the 2016 – 2017 Arts Fellowship Program in the Flameworking, Glass, Painting & Drawing, Textiles/Jewellery, and Wood Studios.

This program offers graduates an opportunity to work within a professional studio environment after completing their studio education. This program provides a venue to assist new artists with the production of their first body of work in a specialized studio. Based on studio availability, fellowships will be awarded to recent graduates in the above noted studios.

Flameworking: Half-time Residency – up to 25 working hours in the studio per week

Glass: Single Slot Residency – one blow/casting slot per week, 10 hours cold-working per week

Painting & Drawing: Half-time Residency – up to 25 working hours in the studio per week

In conjunction with the City of Peterborough, Artspace is seeking proposals for the installation of a large-scale mural in a designated archway of the Hunter Street Bridge in Peterborough, Ontario.

Submission Deadline: May 6, 2016, 5pm

This is an open call to all artists working or residing in the province of Ontario to create an outdoor mural to be installed on the structural walls and vault celling of a single archway of the Hunter Street Bridge. Last years mural installation was a great success, and this project marks the second phase of the renewed and ongoing Public Art Initiative in the City of Peterborough.

The purpose of this project is to continue the enhancement and rejuvenation of the Hunter Street Bridge and surrounding neighbourhood. Beyond improving the appearance of the archway through site-specific work, the work should, in some manner, be conscious of the community in which it will be installed.

The artist(s) whose work is selected for installation will be expected to make at least one site visit (travel and accommodations provided) prior to the installation of the work in July/August of 2016.

The expected completion of the Mural Project is September 2016.

Following completion, the mural will remain installed on the Hunter Street Bridge for a minimum of two (2) years, with the ability to extend installation in consultation with the artist.

Experience working with graffiti, street-based art, and a history of public art projects will be considered an asset by the Selection Committee in the execution of this project.

All applicants will be notified of the jury’s decision by the end of May 2016.

 

Mandate

The Hunter Street Bridge Mural Project is funded by the City of Peterborough’s Public Art Program. Artspace has been contracted by the City’s Arts Culture & Heritage Division to coordinate this initiative. The City’s Interim Public Art Committee, chaired by Bruce Stonehouse, of the City’s Arts Culture & Heritage Advisory Committee, has endorsed this project.

Artspace is a non-profit organization that assists artists with the presentation of new work. We adapt in response to the needs of artists and strive to engage and inform the public about their work. Formally, our mandate aims to foster a stronger appreciation for Canadian contemporary art. In our ongoing efforts to increase public awareness, we also aim to build on our reputation as one of our region’s most vital arts organizations.

We advocate for artists. We nurture dialogue across disciplines, cultures and perspectives. We are also representatives, responsible for building ties within the community. Ours is a necessary voice in the cultural landscape, and has been since 1974. Our programming, though national in scope, is regional in spirit. The Gardiner Museum’s Ceramic Sculpture Competition is challenging artists from across the country working in all mediums to create a new Toronto landmark using clay. The monumental sculpture will be installed in front of the Museum on Queen’s Park, along the busy Bloor and Avenue Road Corridor, joining the Jun Kaneko “head” as a focal point of the Museum’s plaza.

The winning sculpture will be selected by a five-person jury made up of artist and novelist, Douglas Coupland; Director of the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, Gaëtane Verna; Associate Dean of OCAD University, Michael Prokopow; Gardiner CEO and Executive Director, Kelvin Browne; and Gardiner Chief Curator, Meredith Chilton.

The competition will promote the benefits of public art, and demonstrate both the versatility of clay and its potential for outdoor art. It will also build appreciation for artists who work in the ceramic medium and encourage artists to experiment with it for the first time.

Who can apply?

This competition is open to Canadian artists who work in all mediums and reside in Canada. Artists may apply individually or can submit a collaborative team proposal, providing at least one artist resides in Canada. Artists directly involved with the Gardiner Museum are welcome to participate.

Budget

The winning artwork will have a total budget of $95,000 (plus HST), which includes all costs associated with the creation of the artwork, including but not limited to artist design fees, administration, engineering review, supplies, materials and fabrication, insurance, delivery and installation.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: City of Toronto “Outside the Box” (hand-painted traffic signal boxes) Project

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The City of Toronto invites local artists to submit proposals to create works of art on traffic signal boxes located throughout the city through our “Outside the Box” program.

Outside the Box is a street art initiative that helps to create a vibrant, inclusive, and interesting urban environment that reduces vandalism and helps to beautify City infrastructure and streets. Since 2013, 120 traffic signal boxes have been hand-painted by local artists, transforming each into works of art.

The project is implemented by StreetARToronto (StART), part of the City of Toronto’s Transportation Services division.

ARTIST FEE

Artists chosen will receive a $500 honorarium for each completed traffic signal box.

LOCATION OF TRAFFIC SIGNAL BOXES

In 2016, Outside the Box is aiming to have 73 traffic signal boxes hand-painted by local artists (the full list of locations can be found on our website).

Artists interested in painting a particular box from the list are welcome to note this in their application and describe how their work relates to the local community, though there is no guarantee that artists will be given their preferred location.

PAINTING WEEKS

For 2016, painting must take place within one of the two specified painting weeks:

• WEEK 1: June 20 – 24, 2016
• WEEK 2: August 15 – 19, 2016

Artists must specify in their application which week they will be available to paint (though, depending on box locations, some flexibility may be required). A single traffic signal box generally takes two days to complete.

APPLICATION & DESIGN CRITERIA

• Artists who are applying must reside in the City of Toronto and may not be a City of Toronto employee
• Applicants must use the template provided on the website (www.toronto.ca/streetart/outsidethebox) to propose their design concept(s).
• Designs must include all visible sides of the traffic signal box, unless where specified by the StART project team
• Designs must not contain:
  • Any representations of traffic lights, signs, or signals
  • Advertisements or promotion for any business, production, or viewpoint
  • Vulgar, profane, offensive, or insensitive images or text
  • Any breach of intellectual property, trademarks, brands, images of illegal activity
  • The attachment of any object(s) to the box
• Artist signature and website cannot occupy more than ¼ of the base unit
• All designs will be subject to City of Toronto review and approval

HOW TO APPLY

Artists must provide a completed application form (available on our website) and all attachments requested in the application’s front-page checklist. The deadline for applications is Friday, April 29, 2016 at 4:30pm EDT. Applications received after 4:30pm EDT will not be accepted.

Artists may submit more than one design proposal, along with a statement for each design. No artist will be selected to paint more than 2 traffic signal boxes per year.

ARTIST SELECTION AND PAINTING PROCESS

• Applications must be received by Friday, April 29th, 2016 at 4:30pm EDT
• Applications will be reviewed by a jury composed of staff and external jurors. References will be checked.
• Successful proposals are those that are innovative in design, counteract graffiti vandalism, and contribute to a sense of community identity and pride.
• Selected artists will be notified in mid-May. They will be provided with their traffic signal box location, and will be required to sign a service contract with the City of Toronto.
• Painting must take place during one of the two weeks specified above. Artists will receive info about where they can pick up their protective safety equipment in advance of their painting week.
• Once painting is completed, boxes will be protected with a graffiti-resistant clear coat, but the City cannot guarantee how long each traffic signal box will be in use: artists must accept the risk that their artwork may be damaged, altered, or removed at any time after completion.
