Appel de dossiers BIEC 2011: jusqu’au 1er octobre 2010

La 7e Biennale internationale d’estampe contemporaine (BIEC) de Trois-Rivières se tiendra du 19 juin au 4 septembre 2011. En vue de cette exposition concours, qui est ouverte aux graveurs professionnels du monde entier, la BIEC a mis en ligne dans son site Web  | www.biectr.ca | le formulaire d’inscription. On peut remplir en ligne ce formulaire (ou le télécharger et l’imprimer), y joindre les images numériques des œuvres et transmettre tout le dossier électroniquement. La date limite pour soumettre un dossier est le 1er octobre 2010. La sélection des œuvres sera faite par un jury international de cinq spécialistes et artistes de l’estampe.  Règles détaillées du concours dans le site Web.

Depuis ses débuts en 1999, la BIEC met en valeur l’estampe contemporaine internationale par la présentation bisannuelle d’une vaste exposition d’oeuvres d’estampiers professionnels de tous les horizons.

“Pepsi financera des idées positives grâce à des bourses de plus de 1 million de dollars dans le cadre du Projet Pepsi Ici c’est mieux au Canada
Une nouvelle enquête révèle que les Canadiens veulent améliorer leur monde mais n’en ont pas les moyens financiers ni le savoir-faire
Montréal (QC), le 26 mai 2010 – Une nouvelle enquête commandée par Pepsi indique que 92 pour cent de Canadiens aimeraient faire quelque chose pour améliorer le monde autour d’eux, mais faute d’argent et de savoir-faire, un grand nombre n’arrivent pas à concrétiser leurs idées.
Les Canadiens qui rêvent de changement auront maintenant les moyens de concrétiser leurs idées grâce au Projet Pepsi Ici c’est mieux au Canada, un mouvement précurseur visant à encourager l’innovation en matière de bien social. Au cours de la prochaine année, Pepsi donnera plus d’un million de dollars pour aider au financement d’idées de Canadiens, destinées à faire progresser le monde de façon positive.
Voici la marche à suivre : Les Canadiens (individus ou organismes) peuvent visiter le site www.icicestmieux.com (en ligne le 18 avril 2010) pour en savoir davantage sur le programme et télécharger une trousse de soumission. Ensuite, le 1er juin, ils peuvent soumettre leur idée pour obtenir une bourse dans l’une des six catégories suivantes : Santé, Arts et Culture, Nourriture et Logis, Environnement, Vie de quartier et Éducation. Les idées doivent être profitables, réalisables, constructives et prêtes à être exécutées.
Le 1er juillet, le vote débutera sur le site – ainsi ce sont les Canadiens et non pas Pepsi qui détermineront la personne ayant la meilleure idée et qui obtiendra la bourse.”

APPEL DE PROJETS

Situé dans l’édifice La Filature – une ancienne filature industrielle magnifiquement rénovée -, DAÏMÕN offre des ressources de création, de production et de diffusion dans les domaines de la photographie et des arts médiatiques.

Par ses programmes Artiste résident, Recherche et création, Photographie et impression numérique et Soutien aux premières œuvres, DAÏMÕN encourage les artistes à repousser les limites de leur pratique et à développer de nouvelles approches par le biais de l’image, de la vidéo, ainsi que des arts sonores et électroniques, y compris les pratiques installatives, interactives et performatives. DAÏMÕN privilégie les projets qui font valoir le jeu de plus en plus complexe des médias entre eux et qui interrogent les zones intermédiaires et non seulement les langages constitués des médias utilisés. Seuls les projets comportant un certain degré de recherche sont considérés.

Avec son STUDIÕ, espace de production et de diffusion, DAÏMÕN favorise la mise en espace et la mise à l’essai d’œuvres d’envergure, ainsi que le développement des pratiques transversales. Des rencontres publiques y sont organisées régulièrement afin de permettre à la communauté de s’initier au travail des artistes accueillis en résidence. Ce STUDIÕ multifonctionnel est offert aux artistes pour l’expérimentation, la production et la présentation d’œuvres dont les composantes requièrent une infrastructure technique particulière.

DAÏMÕN met à la disposition des artistes des équipements de tournage et d’enregistrement, et des salles de montage audio et vidéo numérique. Une chambre noire permet des développements argentiques de grand format (1m32) à partir de négatifs pouvant aller jusqu’à 280 mm. Un service d’impression numérique (EPSON Stylus 9600 Pro) est également disponible.

Artiste résident
Offert aux artistes professionnels de l’extérieur de la région Ottawa-Gatineau, ce programme veut promouvoir des échanges féconds entre les artistes d’ici et d’ailleurs. Il s’adresse aux artistes en mi-carrière et établis ou qui ont cumulé plus de cinq années de pratique dans un champ de recherche spécifique.

Le Centre fournit, pour la réalisation de chacun des projets, un séjour de 4 à 6 semaines incluant l’hébergement, l’accès aux équipements du Centre et les services d’un technicien (60 heures). Un cachet de 1 500 $ est versé à l’artiste. Certaines indemnités de déplacement ainsi que des indemnités quotidiennes sont également payées par DAÏMÕN. Tous les autres frais concernant la production de ces projets doivent être assumés par les artistes. DAÏMÕN organise une soirée-rencontre avec le public où l’artiste présente son travail antérieur et actuel.

Recherche et création
Ce programme est offert aux artistes professionnels de la relève, en mi-carrière ou établis. DAÏMÕN sélectionne six artistes par année, dont trois parmi les candidats de la région Ottawa-Gatineau et trois parmi les candidats en provenance de l’extérieur de la région.

DAÏMÕN fournit, pour la réalisation de chacun des projets, un encadrement technique et artistique, l’accès aux équipements du Centre pendant une durée de quatre (4) semaines et les services d’un technicien (50 heures). Certaines indemnités de déplacement ainsi que des indemnités quotidiennes sont également payées par DAÏMÕN pour les artistes de l’extérieur. Tous les autres frais concernant la production de ces projets doivent être assumés par les artistes.

Photographie argentique et impression numérique
Ce programme vise à mieux soutenir la création sur support papier en chambre noire et en impression numérique.

DAÏMÕN fournit, pour la réalisation de chacun des projets, un encadrement technique et artistique; l’accès aux équipements du Centre pour la réalisation des projets pendant une durée de trois (3) semaines et les services d’un technicien (15 heures). Certaines indemnités de déplacement ainsi que des indemnités quotidiennes sont également payées par DAÏMÕN pour les artistes de l’extérieur. Tous les autres frais concernant la production de ces projets doivent être assumés par les artistes. En photographie traditionnelle, les artistes doivent fournir leurs produits de développement et leurs papiers photographiques.

Soutien aux premières œuvres
DAÏMÕN maintient son soutien à la réalisation d’une première œuvre pour trois artistes de la région Ottawa-Gatineau. Les projets admissibles comportent la production d’une œuvre originale utilisant la vidéo, ou l’application de médias hybrides à des œuvres d’art.

Sont admissibles à ce programme, les artistes en début de carrière de la région Ottawa-Gatineau ayant une formation de base et voulant créer dans un contexte professionnel une première œuvre dans les champs de la pratique photographique, vidéographique ou des nouveaux médias. Les artistes professionnels de la région Ottawa-Gatineau ayant déjà une pratique artistique dans une autre discipline (peinture, sculpture, photographie, installation, etc.) et voulant développer une production en vidéo et/ou en nouveaux médias sont également admissibles.

DAÏMÕN fournit, pour la réalisation des projets un encadrement technique et artistique, l’accès aux équipements pendant une durée de trois (3) semaines et les services d’un technicien (30 heures). Tous les autres frais concernant la production de ces projets doivent être assumés par les artistes.

PRÉSENTATION DES DOSSIERS
Les artistes intéressés sont invités à prendre connaissance des conditions des programmes de création et à faire parvenir un dossier comprenant:

– une indication claire du choix du programme;
– un résumé du projet (5 lignes);
– un énoncé de la démarche artistique (1/2 page maximum);
– une description du projet (1 page maximum);
– une description des besoins techniques et un échéancier de production (1 page maximum);
– un curriculum vitæ (3 pages maximum);
– une documentation d’appui * accompagnée d’une liste descriptive;
– une enveloppe affranchie pour le retour du dossier.
* La documentation d’appui doit faire état de la production artistique et non seulement du projet à réaliser. La documentation d’appui peut inclure un maximum de 10 images (fichiers numériques, diapositives ou photographies), une bande VHS, un CD, un DVD (max. 5 min), une adresse URL ou une publication.

Pour les candidatures au programme Artiste résident, un maximum de 20 images (fichiers numériques, diapositives ou photographies), une bande VHS, un CD, un DVD (max. 10 min), une adresse URL ou une publication.

Pour avoir accès aux services et aux équipements du Centre, les artistes dont les projets auront été sélectionnés devront devenir membres actifs au coût de 75$.

identités multiples
L’Atelier  Graff  invite  les  artistes  professionnels  possédant  des  compétences  en  art  imprimé  à  participer  à  Identités
multiples, un projet de création visant à réunir différentes pratiques artistiques autour des notions de multiple et d’identité.
Ce projet collectif privilégie les approches qui abordent la reproductibilité de la matrice comme moteur du processus de
création, permettant de générer une multitude d’éléments devenant essentiels à l’intégrité de l’œuvre.
Le projet Identités multiples se construira par la mise en commun de divers modes de pensée et de travail — les identités
multiples — alors que les interventions des artistes se confronteront, se complèteront et se répondront mutuellement. Fondé
sur l’échange et la collaboration, ce projet à caractère évolutif mettra à profit les connaissances et le savoir-faire de chacun.
Les participants, au nombre de cinq, devront répondre aux critères de sélection pour devenir membres actifs de l’Atelier
Graff et devront s’investir activement tout au long du processus de création.

SAVAC (South Asian Visual Arts Centre) is pleased to announce an open call for Velocity, SAVAC’s Annual Juried Members’ Group Exhibition. SAVAC invites proposals for new and innovative artworks that explore current issues and ideas shaping South Asian identities and experiences. We encourage applications that engage a range of themes that examine our fast-paced and changing contemporary culture.

SAVAC invites artists to submit proposals of completed works in all formats including painting, drawing, print-making to photography, sculpture, film, video, sound and new media installations.

The exhibition will take place at Function13: Design, Art & Technology Store & Gallery (156 Augusta Avenue, Kensington Market) from 17-25 September 2010.

The exhibition will be juried by a guest jurors: Ryan McGilvery Curator and Manager of Function 13 Gallery, Victoria Moufawad-Paul Programming/ Exhibition Co-ordinator of ASpace Gallery, SAVAC member artists Samina Mansuri and Tazeen Qayyum and members from SAVAC’s Programming Committee.

Submissions: SAVAC encourages all member artists to apply. Non-members may apply by purchasing a one-year membership at SAVAC ($20 for practicing artists).

The Strandline Curatorial Collective and the MacKenzie Art Gallery invite artists and artist teams to submit proposals for presentations, discussions and workshops for SHIFT: dialogues of migration in contemporary art, a symposium taking place in April of 2011.

This three-day imaginative symposium will provide an opportunity for artists and the public to produce and experience innovative presentations and projects related to the shifting notions of belonging and the transformations of indigenous and non-indigenous movement of people and ideas occurring in public galleries.  Artists are encouraged to provide proposals for innovative artist-created presentations, talks, panels and public workshops.

Shift: dialogues of migration in contemporary art  is designed to challenge how we think about our current mobility, placements and displacements, gallery transformations, nomadic artists, practices and technologies and the issues that surround them.

Artists are invited to respond to the following thematics:
•    Transformative Creativity>Participatory Practices, Galleries and Groups
•    New Practices>Nomadic Artists, Cultural Translation
•    Making the Connection>Borderless Technologies, Mobilization and Interactivity

Culmix Arts is an artist-run non-profit art organization. The organization is committed to supporting artists advance their career through organizing art exhibitions, workshops, and seminars. We are currently in the process of planning our next ranges of art exhibitions and inviting critical artists of all media to submit their portfolio or proposal for consideration to our curated exhibitions. Participation in our selected future events is free to selected artists.
All submission must include the following information:
1.    Artist biography and statement
2.     Proposal: Clearly outline your proposed exhibition or project.

Modern Fuel’s 12th Annual Regional Juried Exhibition will be presented at Modern Fuel from August 7th to September 4th.
Opening reception: August 7, 2010 at 7pm.

Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre invites artists to submit works produced in visual and time-based disciplines: painting, sculpture, printmaking, video, installation, sound, etc.. We also welcome proposals for performative, interventionist and live works for presentation at the reception or according to a schedule. The exhibition reflects the diversity of artistic practices in the Eastern Ontario region, and often features time-based works alongside more traditionally visual works. The curatorial premise for this group exhibition is to reflect the wide-ranging practices of artists in the region and is meant to provide a forum in which to compare artistic modalities from one year to the next.

Note: According to our organizational mandate, Modern Fuel ARC will provide CARFAC fees to exhibiting artists.

This year’s guest curator, Valérie Lamontagne, will be asked to select works based on their exploratory character, insofar as they pose interesting questions (formally, conceptually and politically) within current artistic and broader socio-cultural contexts. Valérie Lamontagne is a digital media artist, designer, theorist and curator researching techno-artistic frameworks that combine human/nonhuman agencies. Looking at the rich practice of performance art, social intervention and interactive installations – she is invested in developing responsive objects (specifically wearables) and interactive media scenarios which interlope the public-at-large, the environment and matter as “performer.” She is the Founder and Director of 3lectromode, a design group invested in developing wearables combining state-of-the art technology with current fashion research. She is presently a Ph.D. researcher at Concordia University, where she teaches in the Department of Design & Computation Arts.

Submission Details:

Please submit an Artist’s Statement (max one-page) and CV and images of two to three works for consideration. (The works must not have been previously shown in Modern Fuel’s Main Gallery or its State of Flux Gallery.) Include an image list (with titles, dimensions, dates, and media).

Please submit only digital images of the work on CD or DVD and formatted to the following specifications:

-JPEG files only
-1024 pixels wide and 768 pixels high.
-1 MB maximum.
-RGB, or grayscale colour mode files only (no CMYK).

Number and title each file (digital still); the number must appear before the title so that the order of the images will correspond to the image list (example:001RedPainting.jpg)

Do not submit images embedded in the following programs or formats: iphoto, Powerpoint.

AND/OR

-submit a maximum of 20 minutes of time-based work on DVD. Time-based work can also be submitted as a computer-based media format that can be read by Quicktime or RealOne Player, or are in the following formats: .mov .mp4 .avi.

Focusing on the uniqueness of Queen St. West, the successful candidate will:
•    Present the Queen St. West BIA’s mural committee with a detailed drawing of the proposed mural for approval and review by committee and by representatives from the City of Toronto
•    Be able to execute their drawing on a large scale mural within the allocated time frame agreed upon with the Queen St. West BIA
•    Is responsible for the purchase of materials (to be reimbursed by the Queen St. West BIA)

The City of Toronto requires that the following guidelines to be followed:

The mural will not feature any nudity, political themes or religious imagery. The mural will also not promote violence, hatred or contempt against any unidentifiable group on the basis of color, race, ancestry, religion, ethnic origin or disability.

Budget: $3,000 honorarium offered for the artists and $2,000 budget to cover materials and any equipment rentals
Wall dimensions: 17 ft wide, the mural can go 3 stories up

About the Queen St. West BIA
Located just south of the Ontario College of Art and Design and the Art Gallery of Ontario, Queen Street West between Simcoe and Bathurst is the neighbourhood that nurtured young artists for decades. Formed in early 2009, the Queen St. West BIA has the distinction of being the first Commercial Heritage Conservation District in Toronto. Celebrating its one year anniversary, the BIA is an association of business owners and tenants along Queen Street West that work together to preserve the heritage and strong culture that the community has long been known for. Known  for its mixture of fashion boutiques, galleries and indie music bars, the eastern part of Queen West has become a major shopping district while the western half retains its eccentric roots.

WHITE RABBIT is an artist retreat and a site-specific installation festival taking place at Red Clay farm in Upper Economy, Nova Scotia.

Oeno Gallery: Public Art Call for Proposals, Deadline July 15

The Oeno Gallery is in the process of building an outdoor sculpture garden of approximately five acres in size, and seeking proposals from artists for sculptures

A commercial art gallery specializing in contemporary art, we are located two hours southeast of Toronto and an hour southwest of Kingston, in Prince Edward County. Both the Gallery and the sculpture garden are situated on Huff Estates, voted one of the top 20 wineries in Canada. The Gallery and the sculpture garden are adjacent to the Inn, the Winery, and the vineyards on the Estate. One of the most popular stops on Prince Edward County’s Wine, Taste and Arts Trails, more than 30,000 visitors come to the Estate throughout the year.

The garden will have extensive walking paths; a large spring fed stone quarry, several distinct seating areas, a wildflower field, perennial plantings, groves of various native tree species, a large hill, and specific sites suitable for sculpture of various sizes.

Proposals will be reviewed by the Gallery, and specific works will be selected by a jury consisting of the curator, assistant curator, and two senior sculptors. Works must be original, modern, durable in all seasons, and safely available for viewing by the public in an unsupervised area. Work must also be available for sale to the public or to corporate clients. No electricity is available on the site. Power requirements, if any, must be designed with independent solar sources.

Much like naturally inclined elements, the human body is a carcass of memories, vices and virtues. Through structural
processes that often push boundaries and test endurance, the human body, time and time again, transcends
experiences of hurt and agony and transforms them into opportunities for new awareness and self actualization.
Similar to other natural forms, the body repairs itself both internally and outwardly through restoration that may
appear to test the limitations of the body, hinging on direct endurance systems that have evolved alongside human
development. The human entity is known to be a great threshold for resilience, being able to revitalize the experience
of pain into scars that hold substantial significance over the person’s soul. It is with this constant recycling of pain
and pleasure that humanity moves forward, vigorous as ever in its quest to understand human nature. An inherent part
of this process is the creation of visible and/or invisible scars. Manifestations of stress on the human body can take
many different shapes and forms, physical and spiritual or psychological; however, it is through the body’s constant
recycling of the negative into the positive, that we gain insight into the agony and the ecstasy of all that is human.

In accordance with the theme of recycled pain, The Propeller Centre For The Visual Arts invites submissions and
proposals from local & international artists for an exhibition of Performance Art to be held on July.18.2010 (Sunday).
Proposals should be no longer than two pages in length, with primary focus on endurance and duration. The space
outside the immediate entrance of the gallery is also accessible and a floor plan is attached for familiarity with the

Videophagy, open call for submissions
e-fagia Organization is accepting submissions for videophagy, an exhibition to be carried out from September to October of 2010, in the city of Toronto.
The medium of video continues to be transformed by changes in technology. With Video Line we want to explore  the web as a channel through which we could investigate the different forms in which Internet and video are related. We are looking for traditional or hybrid contents that are present on the Internet and that  participate of, or expand on the notion of video. We encourage submissions of diverse artistic-cultural contents through the video on the web, as we strive to integrate the fields of contemporary culture, visual arts, music, film and architecture.

NOTHING TO DECLARE – 25 October to 25 November 2011

We are initiating an independent project entitled Nothing to Declare, an International Contemporary Art Exhibition in Manila, Philippines from 25 October to 25 November 2011 with the possibility of traveling the exhibition to select countries in 2012 and 2013. Nothing to Declare will host a roster of international and local artists.  We will also organize teachers’ training workshops, artist talks and group discussions as satellite activities to the program.

In brief, Nothing to Declare revolves around the following interrelated themes:
1.  Shifting geographies emerging from diasporas, migrations, overseas work 
2.  Shifting identities arising from movement, mobility, displacement, exchange; implying a sense of rooted-ness and slippage, identification and estrangement, familiarity and alienation, entitlement and distance 
3. Shifting spaces, connoting not just physical relocation, but mental and spiritual dis/position, as well as dislocations, gaps and silences that take place in immediate, virtual and hyper-realities 
4.  Shifting positions, implying an appreciation of difference and a willingness to dialogue, work together, listen and engage.
5.  Shifting power relations, connoting multiple flows and streams of choices, constraints, control and conditions of creation, dissemination and reception 
6.  Shifting possibilities, connoting transformations and breaking grounds where marginality – of having nothing to declare – IS source of intervention and strength, of loss as well as triumphs

To participate in Nothing to Declare, please send us a proposal of, (preferably recent) artwork you would like to show OR a proposal for new work you will make and would like to exhibit.
Include medium resolution (75-100 dpi) photographs or drawings to illustrate your proposal including installation requirements, size of the artwork, medium, etc.

submit to an international exhibition in collaboration with Surface
Gallery in Nottingham, UK, scheduled for September-October, that will
explore current paths and ideas in contemporary art. The exhibition wishes

AECOM has opened the Urban SOS: Transformations competition, offering US $20,000 in prize money for integrated design responses to sites in select global cities. The competition is open to students in the fields of architecture, urban and regional planning, urban design, landscape architecture, economics, environmental science, engineering, and related disciplines.
Now in its second year, Urban SOS gives students all over the world the opportunity for real engagement with issues facing built, natural and social environments. This year, we are exploring the topic of ‘Transformations,’ looking at seven cities in particular that are in the midst of a change or collection of changes that represent both challenges and opportunities to the shared futures of each city.
The competition seeks creative, viable proposals for site redevelopment in one of seven cities:
•    Phoenix, Arizona, United States;
•    Jeddah, Saudi Arabia;
•    Beijing, China;
•    Port au Prince, Haiti;
•    Istanbul, Turkey;
•    São Paulo, Brazil;
•    Johannesburg, South Africa.
The five semi-finalists will receive a trip to the World Architecture Festival in Barcelona from November 3rd to 5th, where they will have the opportunity to present their ideas to a jury of industry, academic and AECOM professionals.

The Urban SOS program continues a long tradition of dialogue between the student community and AECOM practitioners. The digital medium has opened this dialogue to a wider audience—last year, over 1,000 entrants from 239 colleges and universities in 64 countries participated.
Sabrina Kleinenhammans, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, won the 2009 competition with her proposal detailing a preemptive land-holding strategy for an agricultural and recreational green space network along transportation corridors in Mumbai, India.

In a first for New Zealand, the CoLab | TBI Online Digital Residency is part of the CoLab development strategy to support innovation, the creation of new digital art work and collaboration. Presented by CoLab (the interdisciplinary creative technology centre at AUT University) and The Big Idea website (the online home of New Zealand’s creative community).

While working in the virtual space on The Big Idea, the artist will also work with CoLab making a contribution to a public programme and exploring the potential for an article in an international journal publication.

Indigenous and Alien – Artist in Residence Program – Call for Applications

This call is open to artists from different disciplines and backgrounds – individuals and groups are welcome. Within a public protected area, the topic INDIGENOUS AND ALIEN can be associated to the preservation of flora and fauna, migration, identity or cultural diversity. The last two days of the event, there will be an open presentation to the public. We will work with the residents on possible formats for the exhibition. We can intervene on parks, squares, streets, woods, paths, ports, sidewalks, lakes, etc. Artists are expected to approach a collective exhibition as well as a personal project. At the same time, we will develop a documentary on the experience.

Exchange Radical Moments! is a brand new Europe-wide Live Art festival. It will take place simultaneously in cities across Europe on 11 November 2011 (11.11.11). The various events will consist of encounters, site-specific interventions, experiments in social practice, public interventions, performances and live acts.

What is being exchanged?

The Super 8 Festival Détours in Santorini (Greece) is now accepting films for its third edition. It will be occurring this summer August 27th through 29th 2010: three nights of white walls and Super 8 outdoors projections around the maze of tiny streets of one of the most beautiful island in the Mediterranean. King’s Cross Central Partnership has high aspirations for the quality of art at King’s Cross. Our aim is that the art will be of such quality that it creates King’s Cross Central as a destination for arts. We will support art that responds to the site as it evolves over time and seek to encourage innovative and creative approaches. The programme will contribute to the wider regeneration of the area, building on the tradition of arts in King’s Cross and involving those in the wider community.
We have made some progress, hosting the work of others and developing programmes of our own. With the support of an Advisory Panel, we wish to develop a more comprehensive approach to arts at King’s Cross Central through the appointment of a curator or curatorial organisation to the site for consecutive periods of three years.

About King’S Cross development
The development at King’s Cross will offer new theatres, independent cinemas, exhibition spaces, new community facilities and annual festivals to complement the already established and thriving creative scene (the adjacent Kings Place is home to two orchestras and music auditoria).
In 2011, University of the Arts, London – which includes Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design – will occupy The Granary and other buildings within the Eastern Goods Yard. Up to 4,500 students and staff will populate the space.
The area will provide up to 50 arts and music venues, with permanent visitor attractions planned within existing refurbished heritage buildings like the Eureka! Children’s Museum and The House of Illustration.
With a commitment to supporting high quality art, permanent and temporary projects will be commissioned across the site. We are promoting initiatives such as ‘Artist in Residence’ and collaborating with local cultural and arts organisations. The new spaces and squares will host outdoor concerts, performance theatre, dance, sculpture and interactive art.

We would like to invite you to take part in a billboard art competition. The invitation is addressed to all the interested artists and students. There is no entry fee.
The best 10 artworks selected by an international jury panel will be printed and exhibited in the urban space of the city of Torun, Poland in September/October 2010. The author of the winning entry will receive the Main Award in the amount of PLN 7000 (approx. EURO 1750, $ 2200).
The competition accompanies 3rd Festival of Art on Billboards Art Moves.
The artwork is supposed to be a creative response to this year’s competition theme: “Together or apart?”
This slogan can serve as a kind of a metaphor of the processes taking place in the contemporary world. Both individuals and the whole societies are faced with such a choice. Do they want to live together, contribute, collaborate and, as a result create shared value, or do they want to lead a separate, individual life of their own? Is it better to be single or in a stable relationship? Is being a member of a larger organization, like the European Union better than staying apart? Is it better to feel a part of your nation or rather an individual citizen? The possible interpretations are multiple. So, together or apart?

CALL FOR FILM/VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS ARTISTS: BOLIVIA COCHABAMBA

The non-profit organization Sustainable Bolivia is currently looking for a professional in film or visual communications to make a series of short promotional films/documentaries about the work on non-profit organization in Cochabamba, Bolivia. The films would be used to show the work that is being done in Cochabamba and tackle key social issues such as poverty, hunger, inequality and poor health.

The successful applicant would be given the opportunity to develop and implement a large-scale project with the purpose of capturing the day-to-day operations of several local NGOs on film. Films would include a description of the mission and background of the NGO featured, footage of staff and volunteers in action, and interviews with people involved in the organization. Responsibilities would include liaising with NGO directors, setting up interviews, working alongside other interns, as well as all filming and editing.
The completed films would be promoted in a variety of ways in an effort to attract attention to the work of Sustainable Bolivia and its partners.

The successful intern/art resident should have experience in film-making and editing and possess a high level of Spanish. It is important that s/he is committed to the fight for social equality and has an open mind and desire to help.

It is envisaged that the internship/residency will last approximately 2-3 months. Although unpaid, the intern/resident will be given comfortable, private and furnished room for free. Other benefits will include free calls abroad and internet, Spanish classes if desired, and an excellent opportunity to live and work in Bolivia.

Thanatopolis, an alternative memorial park/space in the advanced conceptual phase of its development, is looking for works that harmonize with the long-term goal of the project, which is to re-imagine our cultural and personal relationship to death, memory and memorialization – and to engage the above creative fields to bring about a new, profoundly sacred and evocative landscape/sound-space.

Selected projects will be presented at the Thanatopolis Exhibition on October 2, 2010.

Judging will be by a distinguished panel on the basis of creativity, site-responsive, cultural relevance, feasibility and, perhaps most importantly, efficacy in engaging the issues of death, memory and memorialization.

Those invited to execute their physical, performance or music/sound sculpture pieces for the Thanatopolis Exhibition will receive a creative fee of $2,000 plus a budget for travel, materials and incidental expenses.  Applicants invited to exhibit ‘paper’ (un-executable, future, conceptual) projects will receive a creative fee of $700.  Additional funding may be available depending on the scope of the individual projects.

is accepting applications from artists interested in taking part on the 4th edition of the event, scheduled for September, 2010. The period for submitting material is from May 17th to June 30th, 2010.
Pixel Art, Digital Music, Digital Media, open source software, social networks, the mobile world. The contemporary vocabulary has changed, as well as the creation of platforms used by artists in developing their work. FAD – Digital Art Festival, call for artists to participate in the selection process of its fourth edition. We are interested In all forms of art produced by means of computers, software, hardware, mobile phones, camcorders, digital cameras, electronic devices using either low or high technology.
The Deadline

FAD
In 2010 FAD makes its 4th edition. Once again, Belo Horizonte will host artists from many parts of Brazil and worldwide.
In the 2010 edition, FAD has the sponsorship of Oi and cultural support from Oi Futuro. Activities from FAD Symposium and Laboratory, FAD Gallery and FAD Performance will take place in the facilities of Oi Futuro (Oi Futuro Visual Arts Gallery, Klauss Vianna Oi Futuro Theater, Oi Futuro Multi space). FAD Webart will be based at Quina Galeria, a cultural space located in Edificio Maleta, downtown.
FAD 2010 will receive submissions for the following areas:
1) FAD Performance A / V (audiovisual concerts)
Audiovisual Performances (A / V) are projects dedicated to live artistic presentation involving the use audio and images synchronously. Important: There will not be accepted for this category non authorial works and projects that do not have an A / V (audiovisual) concept. The work should have an audiovisual theme developed simultaneously in sound and image.
2) FAD Gallery (interactive installations)
Interactive installations are works that mix artistic content and some kind interaction with the viewer / user (public). The use of tools, devices and technology, as well as the subject, is open.
3) FAD Web-Art (digital art, virtual reality, etc.)
Web art works are artistic content developed for being displayed on computer screen or for manipulation via web (internet). The use of tools and technology as well as the theme, is open.
4) Laboratory FAD (Workshops)
Proposals for short-term workshops with free theme. The objective of this program is the development and / or training in the use of new tools for audio and video, for creating interactive works, free software apps (applications), among others, for professional use or not.
The Directors
Conceived and directed by DJ Tee (aka Tadeus Mucelli) and 1mpar (aka Henrique Roscoe), FAD is a festival of art through digital media.
Tadeus Mucelli is a DJ, music producer, audiovisual artist and cultural manager active in Belo Horizonte since 1996. His main work is focused on two major festivals of the State of Minas Gerais, FAD – Festival of Digital Art and BPM – Beats Per Minute. Both focus on the language of new trends in electronic music and video. Moreover, it has an active career as a music producer and audio in several papers released in Brazil and abroad.
Henrique Roscoe is a digital artist, musician and designer. Works in the audiovisual area since 2004 and has today 3 projects in the area of live audiovisual performance: hol ( hol.1mpar.com ); VJ 1mpar ( vj.1mpar.com ); and addd ( www.addd.com.br ).
Develops interactive installations, programming in Processing, vvvv and Max/Msp. Builds instruments and interactive interfaces using sensors and common day objects. Produces video-sceneries for bands and events in Brazil, Germany and USA. Is one of the curators and producers of FAD – digital art festival that happens in Belo Horizonte since 2007.

Oi Futuro’s mission is to democratize access to knowledge in order to accelerate and promote human development. The main focus of the actions of the Oi Institute is to promote a better future for the Brazilian youth, reducing social and geographical distances. The programs Oi Tonomundo, Oi Kabum! (art and technology school), NAVE And Oi Novos Brasis serve 600 000 children and youth, promoting digital inclusion and providing educational content for the training of teachers and educators. Oi Conecta, a program in partnership with the Federal Government, takes broadband internet to over 37 000 public schools, benefiting about 24 million students. IV International Art Encounters in the Western Sahara liberated Territories
October 16th – 30th 2010. Tifariti (Free Sahara)

CALL OF PROJECTS
1. The object of this call is the selection of artistic projects and interventions of permanent character to be executed in Tifariti, capital of the Western Sahara liberated Territories, reflecting and activating the cultural, social and geopolitical reality of the Western Sahara.
The central axis of this project is the existence of a 2,700 km wall, seeded by three million mines, that divides Western Sahara in two and splits the Sahrawi population between occupation and exile for the last 35 years.
ARTifariti 2010, IV International Art Encounters in the Western Sahara liberated Territories are organised by the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) Ministry of Culture and the Association Friends of the Sahrawi People in Seville (Asociación de Amistad con el Pueblo Saharaui de Sevilla – AAPSS). ARTifariti is an appointment with artistic practices as a tool to vindicate Human rights; the right of the people to their land, their culture, their roots and their freedom. It is an annual encounter of public art to reflect on creation, and society, and is a point of contact for artists interested in the capacity of art to question and transform the reality. ARTifariti wants to promote inter culture relations, fomenting the interchange of experiences and skills between local artists and international artists from other parts of the world; to contribute to the international diffusion of the Sahrawi reality, causing a reflection from the world of Art and the Culture through direct knowledge, and promote the development of these people through their cultural patrimony.
2. This is an international call. Artists of any nationality, whether individual or collective is eligible to apply. Collectives have to appoint one representative who will travel to Tifariti to execute the work.
3. The call is open to proposals from all artistic disciplines (painting, sculpture, drawing, video, performance art, site specific interventions, interventions in ta social context, etc.). Projects proposing to use local found materials and native resources such as: lsand, stones, , animal bones, recycled materials, construction steel, concrete blocks, bomb shells and other war remnants, local fabrics from jaimas, tinted melfas, etc. are preferred. As proposals for permanent artworks that will contribute to establishing Tifariti as an international cultural centre and a powerful symbol of the hopes of the Sahrawi People and the rest of humanity.
Other selection criteria will be the adjustment of the proposals to the conceptual approach of these encounters (as previously described in point 1), the context in which they are developed as well as their artistic and technical viability, considering the social, geographic and economic reality of the Sahrawi People.
4. A jury formed by professionals from the world of the Art will select a total of six projects based on their artistic merit. The names of the members of the jury will be published in ARTifariti´s Web (www.artifariti.org) one month before the selection of the projects.
5. The Ministry of Culture of SADR and AAPSS, organisers of the Encounter, will supply the materials and necessary tools for the realisation of the projects.
6. Flights from Madrid to Tifariti, internal transport, artist lodging and subsistence during the duration of the encounter will be provided by the organization. Note: participants will fund their own way to Madrid.
7. Artworks will become part of the cultural patrimony of Tifariti and will be exhibited outdoors at the Museum of Tifariti. Artists will transfer property rights of the work, as well as the publication and reproduction rights in any kind of support to the Ministry of Culture of SADR (by means of written document signed after the communication of the selection), with the aim of contributing to the spirit and reasons that govern the present call. In case the execution of the work obligatorily demands some process of finishing after to the conclusion of ARTifariti, their authors commit themselves to deliver it fully completed within a month at the AAPSS offices, in order for them to be transported to the Museum in Tifariti.
8. The development and content of the Encounter, as well as the artworks realised, will be shown through mass media and trough the printing of a specific catalogue. For their elaboration, the selected artists commit themselves to transfer to the organization within the maximum term of a month their reflection on their creative experience and their work in a text (one page maximum), as well as other graphic documentation materials related to their creation (including photographs, web pages or action through the net).
9. Touring exhibitions will be organized, inside and outside Sahrawi territories, in order to maximise the spread of the Encounter, and in this context artists are asked to allow the recording and documentation of the creative processes and all the activities that take place during the encounter.
10. Artists who later develop presentations, exhibitions, catalogues or another printed or audio-visual material, as well as actions or any works derived from the artworks selected and developed in these encounter, will mention specifically in the different artistic distribution and promotion means that the work was realised for ARTifariti and, being transferred to the Ministry of Culture of the SADR, as part of the cultural patrimony of the Saharwi People; In the same fashion they shall notify the AAPSS and will deliver such material in order to make it part of the Museum of Tifariti.
11. Presentation of works:
Artists who wish to participate in IV the edition of ARTifariti must present a project that includes the following documentation:
– Author’s name, address, phone number, e-mail and curriculum (max. 2.000 characters).
- Title and illustrated description of the project (max. 4.000 characters)
- Relation of the technical, material and assembly needs, including work’s dimensions (if so) and estimated budget.
- Press and catalogue dossiers, if the artist considers it would aid the evaluation of his /her work and endorsement of the project proposal.

It seems that the traditional division between fine and applied arts is still significant. This flexible yet constant dividing line is consistently being drawn even today, when most of the methods we have used so far to make this division are not considered efficient anymore. For example, recognizing different modelling procedures is not sufficient to determine the artistic status of a certain object or product. This also applies to the nature of social activism organized around a well-shaped aesthetic object or event, since political struggle more and more frequently takes place in the cultural sphere. Furthermore, it has never been more difficult to label an object or a phenomenon as art based only on its intertextuality, since the institution of art has become ever more complex, progressively implying a greater number of cultural practices.
Following the change in production, the difference between functional and non-functional objects is not as simple as it was at the turn of the 20th century, when, in the wake of the first industrial revolution, an organized struggle was started by artists who actively wanted to participate in making social decisions. Moreover, it has not just become more difficult to determine the line between design and fine arts, but it also seems – as Hal Foster claims in his book „Design and Crime“ – that in the recent, so-called post-industrial revolution, almost everything is done according to design principles. Foster claims that this omnipresence of design in contemporary society is the symbol of the triumph of industrial culture which has profited out of the emancipatory projects of avant-garde art.
Foster refers to two pioneers of Viennese modernism, Adolf Loos and Karl Kraus, in order to emphasize the necessary distinction between design and art. Paraphrasing Kraus, he claims that a designer transforms art (an urn) into a functional object (chamber pot), while functional modernists transform functional object (chamber pot) into art (urn). Both cases represent totalitarian practices that do not allow for any critical thinking. Foster therefore concludes that, although autonomous art is a modernist illusion, we still need the „freedom space” which is to be found somewhere between the two extremes.

L’appel à proposition est ouvert jusqu’au 10 juillet 2010 pour les
Rencontres Internationales qui se dérouleront à Paris au Centre Pompidou
du 25 novembre au 4 décembre 2010, et à Madrid et Berlin en 2011.

Ces trois événements proposeront une programmation internationale
inédite -nouveau cinéma, vidéo contemporaine et multimédia,
réunissant des oeuvres d’artistes et de réalisateurs reconnus sur la
scène internationale aux côtés de jeunes artistes et de réalisateurs
présentés pour la première fois.

PARIS/BERLIN/MADRID
Initialement entre Paris et Berlin, les Rencontres Internationales se
sont ouvertes en 2007 à une troisième ville de présentation, Madrid. La
manifestation constitue une plate-forme unique en Europe où les artistes
peuvent se rencontrer, échanger avec un large public, initier de
nouveaux projets, nouer des contacts avec les professionnels.

Les lieux de présentation dans les trois villes sont notamment le Centre Pompidou
à Paris, la Haus der Kulturen der Welt à Berlin, le Musée National Reina
Sofia et la Cinémathèque Espagnole à Madrid.

Cet événement non commercial sans compétition est soutenu par des
institutions françaises, allemandes, espagnoles et internationales.

Plus qu’une simple présentation d’oeuvres, les Rencontres Internationales
proposent un véritable forum interculturel, en présence de nombreux
invités venus du monde entier, artistes et réalisateurs, responsables
d’institutions et de structures émergentes, pour témoigner de leur
expérience, de leur réflexion et de contextes artistiques et culturels
connaissant souvent de profondes mutations.

Les Rencontres Internationales rendent compte des spécificités et des
convergences des pratiques artistiques entre nouveau cinéma et art
contemporain, explorent les formes artistiques émergentes et leurs
propos critiques, et permettent ce temps nécessaire où les points de vue
se croisent et s’échangent.

Les Rencontres Internationales ont pour vocation de faire découvrir
ces oeuvres à un large public, de créer des circulations entre
différentes pratiques artistiques et entre différents publics, de
susciter des échanges entre artistes, réalisateurs et acteurs de la vie
artistique et culturelle.

La manifestation souhaite ainsi contribuer à une réflexion sur notre
culture contemporaine de l’image, au travers d’une programmation
exigeante ouverte à tous.

Résidence d’artiste DAR AL-MA’MÛN- Maroc
Dar Al-Ma’mûn est une résidence pour artistes plasticiens conçue par
Ithaque, complexe de maisons d’hôtes installé dans la vallée verte de
l’Ourika à proximité de Marrakech.

Dar Al-Ma’mûn rassemble une multitude d’activités culturelles (un lieu
d’exposition, une bibliothèque de plus de 10 000 ouvrages en arabe et
français, un pôle de recherche en traduction littéraire, des activités
culturelles et pédagogiques à destination des enfants et des adultes…).
Dar Al-Ma’mûn est une plate-forme de création oeuvrant aux échanges
interculturels et renforçant la contribution de Ithaque au développement
économique et social local.

Dar Al-Ma’mûn s’adresse aux artistes de toutes pratiques : dessin,
peinture, sculpture, vidéo, photographie, performance.
Dar Al-Ma’mûn s’adresse aux artistes de toutes nationalités,
francophones ou anglophones. Nous encourageons vivement les artistes
africains à candidater.

D’autre part, nous souhaitons privilégier les projets artistiques en
collaboration avec les artisans marocains : pour se faire, nous
répertorions actuellement les savoir-faires locaux en une base de
données à laquelle les artistes auront accès.

Notre comité de sélection pour cette première session se compose de :
Sandra Mulliez (Fondatrice de SAM Art Projects – Paris), Catherine David
(commissaire d’exposition et Conservatrice en Chef au Bureau de pilotage
des Musées Nationaux du Ministère de la Culture – France), Ami Barak
(Commissaire d’exposition indépendant), Colette Barbier (Directrice
Fondation d’entreprise Ricard pour l’Art Contemporain), Enrico Lunghi
(Directeur du Mudam – Luxembourg et Président de IKT International) et
Kamel Mennour (Galerie Kamel Mennour – Paris).

Durant le séjour des artistes, les membres de notre comité seront
invités à des visites individuelles en atelier. Notre programme de
visites professionnelles en atelier sera agrémenté d’autres invitations
à la carte à des curators, critiques d’arts et directeurs d’institutions
internationaux.

Nous étudierons avec les artistes les possibilités de diffuser leurs
oeuvres à l’issue de la session, au Maroc et à l’international.

Dar Al-Ma’mûn est une résidence artistique permanente à l’année. Cette
première session se déroulera de trois à cinq mois à partir du mois
d’octobre.

Les quatre artistes retenus bénéficient sur la durée du séjour : d’un
vol AR pris en charge à destination de Marrakech, d’un logement
individuel sur place, d’un atelier de 100 mètres carrés environ et
seront restaurés. Le transport des oeuvres réalisées sera également pris
en charge par nos soins.

Les artistes bénéficient d’une bourse de production d’un montant de 5000
euros par personne.
L’hôtel Ithaque ouvrira ses portes en septembre 2010. Le bâtiment de
1000 mètres carrés de Dar Al-Ma’mûn ouvrira en fin d’année : la première
session de résidences d’artistes débutera en octobre 2010 dans
l’enceinte de Ithaque durant la phase de préfiguration de Dar Al-Ma’mûn.
Les quatre artistes retenus pour cette session se partageront une maison
d’hôtes de 850 mètres carrés.

L’équipe de Dar Al-Ma’mûn est présente en permanence afin de faciliter
le séjour des artistes et la réalisation de leurs projets artistiques,
les accompagnant dans la dimension humaine, technique et logistique de
leurs projets.
1.Dossier de candidature*

Pour être recevables, les candidats devront fournir un dossier comprenant :
– Une lettre de motivation
– Une note d’intention (1 page maximum) explicitant la pertinence de
leur travail artistique en regard de la spécificité des résidences Dar
Al-Ma’mûn
– Au moins un projet réalisable dans le temps et les conditions de la
résidence.
– Un curriculum vitae
– Un dossier artistique illustré représentatif du travail général de
l’artiste. Tous supports sont acceptés : papier, dvd, cd-rom, formats
informatiques, web.

*2. Critères de sélection :*
– La résidence est ouverte à tout artiste francophone ou anglophone, de
toutes nationalités, entre 25 et 40 ans.

Dar Al-Ma’mûn réunira fin août un jury de professionnels de l’art
contemporain (artistes, curateurs, critiques d’art, directeurs
d’institutions) pour la sélection de candidatures. La décision sera
rendue au plus tard le 5 septembre 2010.

La conférence Res Artis à Montréal, du 6 au 10 octobre 2010

Modifications à la Loi sur le droit d’auteur : du bon et du moins bon pour les artistes en arts visuels

Ottawa, mardi, le 8 juin 2010 – Les artistes en arts visuels sont heureux des progrès constatés dans le projet de loi C-32 modifiant la Loi sur le droit d’auteur déposé hier devant le Parlement; ils craignent toutefois que la proposition d’élargir le traitement équitable à l’utilisation des œuvres à des fins éducatives ne leur coûte cher. Le législateur a également raté l’occasion de créer, dans le cadre de ce projet de loi, un droit de suite, comme l’ont déjà fait 56 autres pays.

Quelques recommandations de l’Association nationale des artistes en arts visuels (CARFAC) et de son partenaire québécois, le Regroupement des artistes en arts visuels du Québec (RAAV), ont été intégrées dans le projet de loi, notamment en ce qui a trait aux droits des photographes et des portraitistes, et à la ratification du Traité de l’Organisation mondiale de la propriété intellectuelle.

CARFAC et le RAAV sont également heureux de constater que la parodie et la satire ont été incluses parmi les exceptions. L’utilisation d’œuvres protégées par le droit d’auteur s’inscrit depuis longtemps dans le processus créatif de certains artistes; or, dans certaines situations, le marché n’a pas réussi à combler leurs besoins légitimes en matière d’accès.

Par ailleurs, le fait d’ajouter une exception concernant l’utilisation équitable d’œuvres à des fins éducatives pourrait compromettre des sources de revenu qui, bien que modestes, sont importantes pour les artistes en arts visuels. Compte tenu du manque de clarté quant à ce que l’on considère comme « équitable », les artistes risquent de devoir recourir aux tribunaux afin de déterminer en quoi consistent leurs droits, ce que bon nombre d’entre eux n’ont pas les moyens de faire.

« Dans le monde de l’éducation, tout le monde est rémunéré pour son travail ; pourquoi pas les créateurs ? demande Gérald Beaulieu, président du CARFAC. Cette loi est compliquée ; au cours des prochaines semaines, nous l’examinerons de plus près pour mieux saisir les conséquences qu’elle aura sur les artistes en arts visuels. »

Il est décevant que, dans le cadre du projet de loi C-32, on ait raté l’occasion de mettre en place un droit de suite – cet outil important auquel on a recours partout dans le monde pour que les artistes en arts visuels puissent, eux aussi, jouir de l’accroissement de la valeur des œuvres qu’ils créent. Grâce au droit de suite, les artistes recevraient un pourcentage du prix de revente de leurs œuvres. Le gouvernement australien a récemment adopté un droit de suite, après que le tableau Warlugulong (1977), que l’artiste Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri avait vendue 1 200 dollars trente ans plus tôt, ait atteint 2,4 millions de dollars en 2007. Si le Canada adoptait le droit de suite, les artistes pourraient bénéficier des accords de réciprocité conclus avec d’autres pays où ce droit existe déjà. À l’heure actuelle, les artistes autochtones, et particulièrement les artistes seniors, voient les profits réalisés sur la vente de leurs œuvres dans le marché secondaire leur passer sous le nez.

Même si le débat sur le droit d’auteur a surtout porté sur la lutte que se livrent de puissantes sociétés détentrices de droits d’auteur et les utilisateurs, le droit d’auteur a d’abord été conçu pour encourager la créativité en assurant aux artistes une source de revenu. C’est pourquoi CARFAC et le RAAV incitent leurs membres à ne pas céder leurs droits à des diffuseurs ou à des entreprises.

« Le droit d’auteur représente un élément important de la lutte incessante que nous menons pour aider les artistes à gagner leur vie, a déclaré Lise Létourneau, présidente du RAAV. CARFAC et le RAAV continueront de lutter pour améliorer les droits des artistes jusqu’à ce que ceux-ci soient traités équitablement. »
