10e FESTIVAL PHÉNOMENA
Direction artistique : D. Kimm
Thème : Reconnaissance

Phénomena est un festival interdisciplinaire et bilingue dont l’objectif est de mettre en valeur des artistes novateurs, inclassables et extravagants. Le Festival présente des cabarets, des performances fantaisistes et théâtrales, des spectacles avec projections, des happenings, des déambulatoires, des installations et des événements éclatés et poétiques. La 10e édition de Phénomena aura lieu du 12 au 22 octobre 2021. Voir des extraits de la dernière édition ici.

L’expérimentation et la prise de risques sont au cœur de notre travail. Phénomena s’intéresse aux artistes professionnels qui ont une démarche très personnelle, qu’ils soient émergents ou confirmés, et aux compagnies indépendantes et anticonformistes. Nous offrons une tribune aux artistes qui prennent des risques, qui sont rigoureux et qui se remettent en question. Nous présentons des créations hybrides, poétiques et hors-normes, qui demeurent touchantes et authentiques. Une partie de la programmation est déjà planifiée par la directrice artistique et l’autre partie le sera suite à l’appel à projets. 

Nous préparons notre 10e anniversaire! Mais en ces temps incertains, nous devons avancer prudemment dans notre programmation. Compte tenu de la pandémie, l’édition 2020 a eu lieu entièrement en ligne. Nous avons bien aimé pouvoir rejoindre le public hors Montréal et nous aurons quelques productions en ligne en 2021. Mais nous avons trop besoin du contact avec le public, c’est pourquoi nous proposerons des productions pour différentes jauges permettant la distanciation. Nous souhaitons présenter notamment de courtes formes, des déambulatoires et des performances extérieures dans des lieux atypiques et mystérieux du Mile End et d’ailleurs. Nous avons aussi bon espoir de pouvoir présenter quelques spectacles à notre quartier général La Sala Rossa, même si c’est devant un public réduit.

Nous sommes à la recherche de créations qui ont dépassé l’étape du laboratoire, sans nécessairement avoir connu une large diffusion. Compte tenu de l’incertitude entourant l’évolution de la pandémie, nous privilégions les projets qui pourront s’adapter à différents contextes : courtes formes, déambulatoires, performances extérieures, arts numériques, installations, spectacle pour public réduit, etc.

Avec la thématique Reconnaissance, nous recherchons aussi des propositions qui rassemblent et font collaborer des artistes issus de différentes communautés ou générations. Après plusieurs mois de restrictions et de rêves brisés, nous voulons célébrer les 10 ans du Festival mais aussi offrir une occasion de célébrer la résilience et l’inventivité des artistes qui n’ont jamais cessé de vouloir rencontrer le public. 

Fidèle à sa mission, Phénomena souhaite offrir une tribune aux artistes de la diversité, qu’elle soit autochtone, multiculturelle, LGBTQ+ ou de personnes vivant avec un handicap. Malheureusement, La Sala Rossa est difficilement accessible aux personnes à mobilité réduite, mais nous avons d’autres lieux possibles. N’hésitez pas à nous faire part de vos idées.

Ada X propose des ateliers participatifs, des expositions, des discussions, des soirées de performances et de projections dans le cadre de sa programmation. Cet appel vise l’élaboration du calendrier de diffusion 2021-2022.

Avant de soumettre une proposition, les candidat-e-s sont fortement encouragé-e-s à consulter le mandat, la liste d’équipement, la programmation antérieure et le plan de l’espace.

Considérant l’expertise d’Ada X et son positionnement dans l’écosystème culturel local, nous favorisons les projets de nature participative ou collaborative, ancrés dans le contexte montréalais et aptes à y mobiliser diverses communautés. Nous accueillons également les propositions conçues spécifiquement pour un déploiement en ligne et bénéficiant d’un potentiel de rayonnement plus vaste.
 

– SLOW TECH – 

Ada X est un centre d’artistes féministe voué à l’exploration, la création et la production en arts médiatiques ainsi qu’à la réflexion critique autour des changements multiples qu’occasionne la culture numérique sur les sociétés*. Malgré ce positionnement avisé et ces bonnes intentions, l’appareillage technologique inhérent aux disciplines de son créneau artistique inscrit le Ada X dans une quête consommatrice en discordance avec la crise environnementale actuelle. À la lumière de ce constat, Ada X s’imprègne depuis 2019 des revendications, des observations, des réflexions ainsi que des valeurs transversales des écoféminismes.

Jusqu’à juin 2022, Ada X est Slow Tech. Plus qu’une thématique, cette posture se décline en trois axes, par lesquels le centre propose aux artistes et aux membres de sa communauté de prendre un recul technocritique. Soumettez vos propositions de projets en lien avec :

— L’environnement

empreinte écologique; destruction, conservation ou restauration des écosystèmes; rapport à la consommation; développement durable; décroissance; sobriété numérique; bienfaits et écueils de la science; étalement urbain; mobilité, etc.

— Les temporalités

alternatives à la course au progrès et à la dernière mise à jour; obsolescence ou pérennité; relectures historiques/Historiques; lenteur; cycle de vie des dispositifs technologiques; rythmes de vie et de travail imposés; droit au temps, etc.

— Les interactions

écologie; ancrage social dans divers milieux; création de liens familiaux, intergénérationnels ou interculturels; mise en réseau; charge mentale et émotionnelle; culture du soin, etc.

* Par culture numérique, nous entendons les pratiques de littératie numérique qui participent au développement d’une conscience avisée des langages et des possibilités offertes par l’usage des technologies. Ces pratiques se déploient dans un souci de démocratisation, d’empowerment et d’indépendance vis-à-vis du rapport de consommation et de contrôle sur les populations que les technologies et les géants du Web peuvent exercer.

 ADMISSIBILITÉ

Seules les propositions admissibles seront évaluées par le comité de programmation d’Ada X.

– Les propositions doivent être cohérentes avec au moins un des trois axes thématiques de Slow Tech.

– Nous recherchons des propositions inspirées — mais non limitées —, par les féminismes et liées aux questions de genre et d’ascendance, dans une perspective intersectionnelle.  

– Ada X accueille des projets d’artistes, de commissaires et d’activistes femmes, queer, trans et/ou non-binaires ainsi que de collectifs et d’organisations qui cultivent des valeurs féministes.

– Ada X soutient les pratiques artistiques qui reposent sur l’utilisation des technologies informatiques, électroniques, numériques, sonores, interactives ou Web. Les créations proposées doivent tenir compte des médias suivants : Net art, art électronique, art sonore, art radiophonique, vidéo, œuvre numérique interactive, œuvre numérique à trame narrative, médias géolocalisés, animation 3D, art du jeu vidéo, réalité virtuelle, court métrage expérimental, bio-art, interventions publiques interdisciplinaires, des projets ancrés dans des logiciels et des pratiques du libre, pratiques ancrées dans la communauté.

–  Les projets proposés doivent être dans les formats suivants : ateliers, performances, événements (tels que des séances de projection vidéo ou d’activation/démonstration d’œuvres numériques) et des activités ponctuelles (telles que des tables rondes ou des discussions). Veuillez considérer qu’Ada X ne présente généralement qu’une exposition (de groupe) par an.

– Les propositions de projets en cours de réalisation sont les bienvenues, cependant les frais de production nécessaires à la finalisation du projet sont assumés par les candidat-e-s. Le soutien reçu par un subventionneur doit être démontré, le cas échéant.

Verticale — centre d’artistes (VCA) invite les artistes, les collectifs et les commissaires à soumettre leur projet dans le cadre de l’appel « Fermentation, science et fiction » pour sa programmation bisannuelle 2021—23. VCA désire s’ancrer dans les bouleversements fertiles du présent et dans la projection d’un futur incertain, quoique imminent. Il sait que, chez lui comme ailleurs, dans la lenteur et l’isolement, des processus se sont enclenchés. Car ces transformations en latence, au-dedans comme au-dehors, ont seulement l’apparence de l’inactivité. […]

Période de diffusion : entre septembre 2021 et août 2023 

VCA diffuse hors les murs. Le centre reçoit des projets qui prennent en compte l’espace physique et/ou social de la diffusion, et qui proposent une réflexion sur les types de lieux, de publics et/ou de contextes à aborder. Par conséquent, VCA accompagne les artistes dans le travail de prospection et d’intégration des œuvres, de manière à ce que la configuration choisie pour la diffusion soit signifiante pour chaque projet et pratique individuelle.

PANACHE art actuel invite les artistes et les collectifs à soumettre un projet de résidence de recherche/création et diffusion pour sa programmation 2021. Depuis 2014, PANACHE est fier de soutenir les démarches artistiques d’artistes d’ici et d’ailleurs en offrant le territoire nord-côtier aux créateurs. Le mandat de nos résidences est de permettre un moment d’exploration et de création afin de produire une exposition nomade qui pourra être présentée dans notre réseau à travers le projet de diffusion La Virée de la culture.​

Direction artistique

PANACHE art actuel s’intéresse à la mise en valeur des singularités nord-côtières telles que les notions de rapprochement/éloignement et d’espace/temps. Il soutient la recherche reliée à des thématiques qui découlent directement des caractéristiques particulières de la région (distance, éloignement, environnement, espace, territoire, ressources, isolement, etc.).

PANACHE art actuel se définit également, dans ses activités, comme une plate-forme de dialogue entre l’artiste et la population. Lors de votre résidence, une conférence, un atelier ou une performance en lien avec votre travail sera initié par le centre pour atteindre cet objectif.​

Le territoire

L’immense territoire de la Côte-Nord, allant de Tadoussac à Blanc-Sablon, en passant par Fermont et l’île d’Anticosti est un territoire grandiose bordé par le fleuve et le golfe Saint-Laurent. Que ce soit pour le dépaysement ou pour découvrir sa diversité, la Côte-Nord est une destination unique pour la recherche et la création artistique.

Comme un grand terrain de jeux créatif, nous vous offrons la Côte-Nord et ses ressources comme lieu de création flexible. Nous recherchons des projets originaux en pertinence avec la destination que vous choisirez dans la région.

Projets de résidences

Description de la démarche artistique (250 mots);
Description du projet de résidence, des besoins spécifiques et du choix de la destination sur le territoire* (650 mots);
Curriculum vitae (3 pages max.)
Dossier visuel comprenant 10 images et liste descriptive des œuvres;
S’il y a lieu, document de presse (3 pages) et vidéographie (5 minutes);
Échéancier (2 semaines de résidence minimum);
Budget (PANACHE offre un cachet de résidence, détails sur demande).

Les dossiers doivent être compressés lors de l’envoi (fichier ZIP, WeTransfer, Dropbox). La sélection des projets se fera par un jury de pairs et nous ferons parvenir un accusé de réception et l’avis du jury à chaque personne nous ayant envoyé un dossier.

Le centre respecte la loi sur le statut de l’artiste et verse des droits d’exposition aux artistes en plus d’assumer la promotion, les frais de transport, ainsi qu’une aide aux déplacements sur le territoire de la Côte-Nord.

APPEL DE FILMS 2021-2022
Culture Trois-Rivières invite les cinéastes et vidéastes professionnels et de la relève à soumettre leur court métrage en vue de la programmation automne 2021 – hiver 2022 de la série Les P’tites vues présentée à l’Espace Pauline-Julien.

Les projections Les P’tites vues ont comme objectif de présenter des films professionnels qui sauront surprendre et émouvoir le public tout en leur faisant découvrir des créateurs talentueux.

Les œuvres devront respecter les conditions suivantes afin d’être admissibles :
Durée qui varie entre 2 et 30 minutes;
Avoir été produites après le 1er janvier 2016;
De langue française ou sous-titrées en français;
Appartenant aux catégories : fiction, documentaire, animation ou film de genre;
N’ayant jamais été présentées dans notre série Les P’tites vues.
Les œuvres à caractère haineux, présentant des images dégradantes ou sexuellement explicites seront automatiquement rejetées.
Le dossier doit inclure :Un synopsis court (3 à 5 lignes);
Une courte biographie du cinéaste/vidéaste (3 à 5 lignes);
Une image tirée du court métrage et le crédit s’y rattachant;
Un lien de visionnement protégé par mot de passe;
Un dossier de presse ou tout autre matériel promotionnel jugé pertinent (facultatif).
Les dossiers sont jugés selon la qualité du court métrage et son potentiel à rejoindre les différentes clientèles de l’Espace Pauline-Julien (enfants et adultes). Les cinéastes/vidéastes sélectionnés reçoivent des redevances conformes aux barèmes de diffusion du CQAM (Conseil québécois des arts médiatiques).

VECTOR FESTIVAL 2021
Deadline: February 25, 2021

Vector Festival is an experimental media arts festival dedicated to showcasing digital games and creative media practices. Presenting works across a dynamic range of exhibitions, screenings, performances, lectures, and workshops, Vector acts as a critical bridge between emergent digital platforms and new media art practice. The festival is proud to be a participatory and community-oriented initiative organized by InterAccess in Toronto, Ontario.

This year, Vector Festival will foreground digital interventions in public space, introducing media arts into new contexts across the City of Toronto, including local parks, building façades, and outdoor screens. InterAccess welcomes applications from artists whose works are intended for presentation within and/or beyond indoor art venues.

InterAccess invites submissions of artworks to the festival’s 2021 program, which will include screenings, performances, workshops, and digital projects taking place July 15 – 18, 2021. The festival’s flagship exhibition is scheduled to take place at InterAccess from July 15 – August 21, 2021.

Please note that Vector Festival does not charge submission fees to artists applying to participate.

All artists and curators selected for participation will receive fees in accordance with the up-to-date CARFAC Fee schedule, as well as support to apply for external funding.

Koffler.Digital invites artists and collectives to submit proposals for the creation of digital works that examine the colour Blue and its evocations. Selected works will be presented in an online exhibition curated by Letticia Cosbert Miller, Director of Koffler.Digital.

Much has been said about the absence of the colour Blue from the earliest Western cultural records, being the last colour to emerge in many languages and, thus, the visual imagination. But what of Blue’s contemporary exploitation? What has this particular colour, filtered through innumerable cultures and collective experiences, come to signify psychologically, emotionally, spiritually, politically?

As a guide, we are interested in proposals that use the colour Blue as a lens to critically engage with the following indications:

rest, sleep, quiet, peace, tranquility, respite, leisure; divinity, spirituality, piety, reverence, devotion, care, deference; otherness, incorporeality, that which is misunderstood, that which is unknowable, the metaphysical, aerial, spectral, transcendental; mourning, loss, sorrow, melancholia, grief, desolation; militarism, colonialism, conquest, surveillance, policing, compliance, subjugation

We are seeking proposals for the creation of original artwork with the ability to be presented online, such as video, sound, animation, illustration, photography, integrative media, etc. We are especially interested in proposed works that incorporate interactive elements, [to be implemented in collaboration with Koffler.Digital’s production team]. Artists living and working across Canada, at all levels of their career, are welcome to apply. Please note that we will not accept proposals for work that has already been produced and publicly exhibited.

The deadline for submissions is February 21, 11:59 PM. Production of successful proposals will take place over the remainder of winter and spring, with final completed works due June 2021.

The Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art is now accepting exhibition proposals from
artists and curators for the 2022 programming of the Main Gallery and Project
Gallery.
The Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art is an artist-run centre located on unceded
syilx territory, in what is now called Kelowna, BC. Since 1989 the Alternator has shown
the work of emerging Canadian and international artists with an experimental
approach, particularly those engaged in social and cultural issues.
Works will be selected by our Programming Committee based on the following criteria:

Compatibility with the Alternator’s mandate

Quality of the artwork (with an emphasis on experimental approach)
Clarity of the written proposal
Production cost and availability

Further, the Programming Committee seeks diversity of perspective, medium and
theme when establishing our annual exhibition calendar.

In March 2020, Covid-19 brought all of us to a standstill. Many artists didn’t even have access to their studios. As Covid-19 continues to affect us all in our daily life, we invite clay, glass, and copper enamel artists to express in their art what the imposed confinement meant for them.

Mental health issues, anxiety, financial burden for some, but also time to reflect, conceptualise, create for others, the conflict and diversification of personal and professional life are possible themes…and more.

Multi-media works and those that incorporate new media within the use of clay, glass, and copper enamelling will be considered.

The selected works will be presented in the exhibition starting in January 2022. A publication will also be produced. The Gallery will provide an artist fee (as set out by CARFAC) to the selected artists and cover the costs of shipping and insurance for the duration of the exhibition.

We welcome submissions from all qualified applicants and encourage submissions from groups that are typically underrepresented in institutional spaces, including racialized and Indigenous individuals, LGBTQ2S+ identifying individuals, francophone individuals, Deaf persons, and persons with disabilities. Located in Waterloo, Ontario, the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery is Canada’s only gallery dedicated to the exhibition and collecting of contemporary Canadian clay, glass, and copper enamelling. VIFF ANNOUNCES 2021 FESTIVAL DATES & CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

The Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) announced today that its 40th edition
will take place from September 30 – October 10, 2021. The landmark edition will
feature both in-cinema and online screenings, with approximately 100
features and 100
shorts to be screened in a showcase of exceptional films from around
the world. The scope of VIFF’s brick-and-mortar events will be determined in the
coming months as the organization continues to closely monitor the COVID-19
situation.

Submissions for the 2021 Festival are now open via FilmFreeway

narrative-lead virtual and immersive content.

Featuring an extensive and diverse collection of contemporary Canadian cinema, VIFF
invites exciting new voices to share the spotlight with national treasures and fosters
enlightening dialogue. VIFF’s 2020 edition featured 65 Canadian features and shorts
playing in competition. 52% of those selections were by female filmmakers and 45%
were by BIPOC filmmakers. Likewise, it included international work from 65 countries,

the form to its limits.

to programming and presentation, its demanded that we re-envision how we

The 2021 VIFF will once again expand the frame to include conferences, talks,

(Im Thinking of Ending Things), Garrett Bradley (Time) and Eliza Hittman (Never
Rarely Sometimes Always), the VIFF Immersed Exhibition of narrative-driven VR
experiences, VIFF Labs, the VIFF AMP Music in Film Summit, and an evening of music
and conversation with Beverly Glenn-Copeland (Keyboard Fantasies).

Furthermore, VIFF is inviting immersive storytellers from British Columbia and around
the world to submit their narrative-driven Virtual and Augmented Reality (XR) content
to the International VIFF Immersed Competition. Finalists will be showcased at the

AKA supports the creation and development of artist driven initiatives and emerging practices that speak to, reflect and encourage dialogue in our culturally diverse communities. This includes work in all media by local, national and international artists. Our venues consist of a street-level gallery, billboard and multi-use screening and performance event space; we also source off-site locations for site-specific projects.

AKA accepts submissions on an ongoing basis for project/exhibition proposals that consider AKA’s history and setting.

Southern Alberta Art Gallery (SAAG) Submission Guidelines Exhibition proposals are accepted throughout the year and reviews are ongoing.  Selection is carried out over a period of time through studio visits and correspondence with artists and curators in whom the gallery has an interest.  Those interested in proposing their work to SAAG are asked to include with their submission: a curriculum vitae, an artist statement and/or letter of intent, a wide selection of images, and other relevant support material. Submissions should be mailed to:

The gallery will not return your submission – please do not send original artworks or valuable materials.   Given the large number of submissions received by the gallery, formal letters of reply will only be issued to proposals of immediate interest.

Accepting proposals: February 1 – March 1, 2021

apexart will accept proposals for its International Open Call from February 1 – March 1, 2021. Four winning proposals will become apexart exhibitions presented in their selected locations around the world as part of our 2021-22 exhibition season. Curators, artists, writers, and creative individuals, regardless of location or past experience, are invited to submit a proposal online.

The submission process

Proposals of up to 500 words should describe focused, idea-driven, original group exhibitions, and the country and city in which they are to take place. No biographical information, CVs, links, or images will be accepted, and proposals must be submitted in English. Jurors rate anonymous submissions based on the idea only. See examples of winning proposals here.

The selection process

Rather than convene a 5-person NYC panel to review hundreds of ideas, apexart’s crowd-sourced voting system invites hundreds of international jurors to review proposals on their own schedule. The crowd-sourced jury is composed of more than 400 individuals from a wide variety of professional backgrounds and international locations—including students from 20 participating university classes—who will jury the proposals. Proposals are anonymous and randomized to make sure each submission receives the same consideration. apexart staff does not influence the results of the jury in any way.

The results

The four winning proposals will each receive an exhibition budget of up to $11,000; have an exhibition brochure printed and mailed to over six thousand international recipients; advertising in major and local outlets; and will be part of apexart’s 2021-2022 exhibition season. Working closely with the apexart team, curators will realize their original ideas into apexart exhibitions. Exhibition curators are challenged, encouraged, and required to work within the funding provided to transform their winning proposals into small, focused, noteworthy exhibitions.

Resisting the global push to digital performance spheres, What Lab is instead offering
time and resources for artists to look inward, to consider the analog, and to expand
documentation and archival practices.
Physical/Material provides opportunities for local creators to experiment with new forms,
ideas, and challenges. In response to COVID-19, the residency will focus on
documentation of the creative process and archival practices, as opposed to
performance. The physical materials created throughout these
residencies will become
the inaugural records of the What Lab Archive.

Le Festival international de jardins, présenté depuis 2000 sur le site des Jardins de Métis en Gaspésie, est fier de lancer son premier appel de candidatures pour ses résidences d’artistes à la Maison d’Ariane, dans le pittoresque village de Métis-sur-Mer.  Cette initiative s’inscrit dans le cadre du programme Artistes émergents RBC de la Banque royale du Canada, qui contribue à épauler aujourd’hui les talents de demain et qui appuie les organismes qui offrent aux artistes les meilleures chances de faire avancer leur carrière.

L’appel de candidatures 2021 s’adresse aux artistes canadiens de 35 ans et moins qui évoluent dans les domaines des arts visuels (peinture, sculpture, estampe, photographie, dessin, illustration, techniques multiples, installations, bande dessinée, performance et arts textiles) ou des arts littéraires (littérature écrite, spectacle de contes et création parlée du domaine littéraire). Les candidatures issues de la diversité culturelle et des Premières Nations seront considérées avec attention afin d’améliorer la représentativité de ces artistes dans le paysage culturel québécois et canadien. Arts Assembly and Access Gallery invite remotely-situated artists to
apply to the Remote Research Residency (RRR). We’re using the word
remote to refer to a broader understanding of isolation”see below for
clarification. Applications from artists who self-identify as
Queer/LGBTQIA2S+, Black, Indigenous, racialized, disabled, and
neurodivergent will be prioritized in the selection of six (6) artists or
artistic groups. We will not share any personal health information
collected during the application process. This project is open to those
located within the

This project aims to create connections, facilitate relationships, provide
opportunities and support.
Recognizing the impacts of colonialism, white supremacy, and all forms
of systemic oppression, we are working broadly in our own
organizational approaches, and specifically with the structure and
intentions of this project, to de-centre whiteness and nurture people,
projects, and ideas, to whatever their natural evolution may be.

Remote can be understood as located rurally/outside of city centres,
and/or facing isolation from artistic communities through circumstances
such as working from home, caregiving, health needs, or displacement.
Remoteness can be physical, geographic, mental and spiritual.

The residencies will be one-month long and two artists will participate
at the same time. We will facilitate dialogue between RRR participants,
and encourage you to connect and share your practices with each
other. In
conversation with the participants, we will produce a digital
exhibition/archive of your residency activities. Residencies will take
place between May and October 2021.

We will provide:
an artist fee of $1500;
a CARFAC rate fee of $322 for an online public talk or presentation of
your research from the residency;
artistic/curatorial support;
additional support based on needs identified by the applicant (be it for
materials, software, childcare, accessibility tools, etc)

Folks with emerging arts practices or artists working through new

AGO X RBC ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM:
Call for Proposals

Three paid digital residencies available in 2021

Each selected artist will complete a two-month residency between April and September 2021.

The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) is now in its 10th year of offering residencies to artists, and this year the AGO X RBC Artist-in-Residence program invites artists to submit proposals for a digital project or experience to be created over a two-month residency, responding to the theme of “Together, Apart”. The residency provides resources, learning opportunities, platforms and mentorship for emerging artists, under the age of 35 working in any field, to realize a digital project. At the end of the two-month residency, each Artist in Residence will be invited to show their work publicly as part of their residency.

We welcome proposals from emerging artists who are interested in creating new artworks that combine artistic genres. Proposals should explain how and through what platform(s) online audiences can engage with the artwork. Artists are open to propose projects that include collaborations with any department at the AGO, including but not limited to: Conservation, Collections, Curatorial, Education & Programming, Library & Archives, Food & Beverage, and Visitor Experience.

Selected artists will receive the following:

  • A one-time artist fee of $5,000.00 CDN, and additional $2000.00 CDN for materials for the project;
  • A mentor with applicable expertise and access to other AGO collaborators; and
  • A public presentation of the completed project.

Who should apply:

  • Artists, individuals, and/or artist collectives who self-identify as emerging artists and are under the age of 35 (at the time of applying)
  • Applicants who are living in Canada or are Canadian citizens;

Conceived as a collective research program, The School of Infinite Rehearsals brings together an interdisciplinary group of participants to exchange knowledges and practices around two research topics that we find urgent to address today.

For our second year, we will look inwardly and also outwardly, for the spatial and temporal structures that affect the ways we live, act and come together. How do we relate to others and how do we organize our decisions? What modes of governance do we adhere to and how do we shape them? What economic systems do we choose to be complicit in and how much agency do we claim to implement radical alternatives? How do we institute our knowledge(s) and acknowledge our institutional complacency or complicity?

In fall 2021, Movement V & VI will collectively explore issues of governance, delving into self-organization (Movement V) and institutions (Movement VI).

In spring 2022, Movement VII & VIII will tackle areas of economies, with a focus on community economies (Movement VII) and philanthropy (Movement VIII).

Onassis AiR is not looking for answers, but rather for questions, intricacies, aspirations, intuitive strategies that need to be tested, and for ways to imagine other modes of functioning as societies. In conversation with our current participants, we are transforming to further expand and foster our collective and horizontal ways of thinking and practicing together. For this reason, there will be no conveners or mentors. The 2021/22 Movement Groups (V-VIII) will be convened by the participants themselves, who will co-shape the curriculum according to their proposed individual research interests.

The selection for the Onassis AiR 2021/22 open call will be done in two phases. Phase I follows a peer-to-peer blind-selection method by the current participants of Onassis AiR 2020/21. During Phase II the selected applications will be reviewed by the Onassis AiR team together with an advisory board consisting of Grégory Castéra, Binna Choi & Marianna Takou (Casco Art Institute), Ilaria Conti, Karthik Pandian, and Piergiorgio Pepe.

The working language of fall 2021 & spring 2022 Movement Groups is English.

All accepted participants will receive a research fee, housing, travel to/from Athens, a collective research budget, and other resources.

Our past present
Driven by its founding principles that are based upon collective artistic research and a self-organized and process-oriented ethos, Onassis AiR, the (inter)national artistic research residency program in Athens, continues to evolve as a growing community of peers from Greece and abroad. Like any living organism that continually grows based on information extracted from its surrounding environment, Onassis AiR transforms and adapts its programs with characteristics that are passed from one movement to the next. From individual research needs to fostering a collective research study, the experiential and the tactile have become core components of how we think and practice together. Over the past 18 months, we have experienced different ways of “cohabitation” in the AiR house, that now belongs to more than 50 artists, curators and art practitioners, who between September 2019 and January 2021, have taken part in programs developed by Onassis AiR in collaboration with our participants, colleagues, and guests.

ABOUT THE LAB
The Moving Image Lab at Meech Lake (Quebec) is a pilot project of Harbour Collective and is funded by the Canada Council for the Arts.

It will provide an intensive opportunity for six emerging to established Indigenous artists from across Canada – with a priority on those living in low-resource settings – to engage in artistic reflection, dialogue, experimentation and exchange focused on personal moving image practices.

The week-long lab will include specialized seminars on:

artistic and creative development concepts in experimental moving image art practices
historical concepts connected to the site of the institute (Meech Lake)
technical concepts, including video and sound production and post production systems and workflows
working process concepts, including how to move past the ideas stage

Selected applicants will be responsible for their own transportation to Ottawa. We will provide transportation from Ottawa to the lab site.

CALL TO ARTISTS FOR EXPRESSION OF INTEREST (EOI) PUBLIC ARTWORK FOR EGLINTON WAY BIA IN TORONTO
Value of the Awarded Commission: Approximately $50,000 CAD (inclusive) per artwork

STEPS Public Art, the Eglinton Way Business Improvement Area (BIA) and the City of Toronto invite Ontario-based professional artists (including artist teams) to submit their Expression of Interest to the first stage of a competition for public artwork(s) that will be installed at one (1) of five (5) locations along Eglinton Avenue West in 2021 and 2022.

The sculptures will be selected through an open, two-stage competition, with a total budget of approximately $50,000 (inclusive) per artwork. The project budget includes all costs directly associated with the artwork: including fees for design, fabrication, installation, engineering and professional services, insurance, travel and other incidental expenses.

COMMUNITY BACKGROUND
Situated at a nine-block stretch at the north end of Toronto’s Forest Hill neighbourhood, the Eglinton Way BIA is a picturesque and pedestrian-friendly area that is considered to be one of Toronto’s most fashionable shopping districts.

Like many other BIAs along Eglinton Avenue West, the BIA has been impacted over the years by the construction of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT. By partnering with the City of Toronto to commission these public artworks, the Eglinton Way BIA hopes to create a truly unique art and shopping experience outdoors, unlike anything the city has ever seen.

The BIA’s goal over the next five (5) years is to bring twenty-five (25) of these sculptures into the neighbourhood.

PROJECT DETAILS
Following a competitive Selection Panel process, shortlisted artists will be asked to develop a design concept for one (1) site. The sites will be assigned to each of the shortlisted artists. The five (5) sites within the Eglinton Way BIA catchment area will be described in detail in the Terms of Reference (TOR) for the short-listed artists.

TWO-STAGE COMPETITION
This is a two-stage, open, Ontario-wide competition for professional artists.

Per the Canada Council’s guidelines, a professional artist is defined as someone who:

has specialized artistic training (not necessarily in academic institutions);
is recognized as a professional by their peers (artists working in the same artistic tradition);
has a history of public exhibitions; and/ or
has produced an independent body of work
A specially convened Selection Panel, composed of practicing arts professionals, BIA and community members, will be established for this competition.

The Selection Panel will review all submissions and meet in early April 2021 to identify a short-list of ten (10) artists, based on artistic excellence, relevant experience and demonstrated or perceived ability to create and execute an innovative, engaging public artwork that is complementary to the overall design scheme and community context.

Stage 2: Request for Concepts: May 3rd – June 30th, 2021

The short-listed artists will be notified after the selection panel’s first meeting and invited to participate in a four (4) week concept development period, which will result in a final concept design proposal and budget. A detailed TOR document will be provided to short-listed artists, with all of the information required to prepare and submit their full proposals. Short-listed artists will be paid a fee of $1000.00 (inclusive) for this stage.

Each proposal will first undergo a technical review by City staff, in order to assess them for safety and maintenance concerns. Each artist will receive their technical feedback notes and have time to incorporate them into their proposals, if necessary. Proposals that are deemed not technically viable will not advance to the interview stage.

Following the technical review, shortlisted artists will attend a community Open House (virtual or in-person, depending on current Public Health Recommendations) and present their proposals to the community in late-May 2021 (date TBC). The community will provide feedback that will be consolidated and shared with the shortlisted artists and the selection panel. Each artist will have time to incorporate them into their proposals.

Shortlisted artists will attend an interview (virtual or in-person) and present their proposals to the Selection Panel in June 2021 (date TBC). The panel will choose five (5) artists whose vision for the site best suits the overall scope and intent of this project, and has the ability or perceived ability to conceive and realize a public artwork on this site.

The selected artists will be notified in early July 2021. Three (3) works will be fabricated and installed by November 2021. Two (2) works to be fabricated and installed in early 2022. Artists selected to install works in 2022 will be asked to sign a Letter of Intent.

The design, by Dillon Consulting, is currently underway, and construction is planned for completion in 2023.

The City of Mississauga’s Public Art Program invites professional artists and artist-led teams to submit expressions of interest to design a community engaged permanent public artwork integrated into glass panels located in the lobby of Mississauga’s Meadowvale Theatre (6315 Montevideo Rd, Mississauga, ON L5N 4G7), as part of the Theatre’s renovation initiative.

All costs and tasks associated with the fabrication, installation and maintenance of the artwork will be paid for and coordinated by the City of Mississauga.

The artwork will be produced onto glass panels surrounding the Theatre’s control room in the building’s lobby and will be fabricated, installed, and maintained by the City of Mississauga and its contractors. The commissioned artist(s) will be expected to complete the design of the project by October 2021.

The vision of the City’s renovation of Meadowvale Theatre is to contribute to the creation of a welcoming arts space, where residents and artists discover the possibilities for growth and development through artistic and cultural experiences.

Meadowvale Theatre acts as both a prestigious performing arts venue and an important gathering place that draws residents together and contributes to the city’s cultural, social, and economic vitality. The building is an important cultural destination and a community space and incubator for emerging artists. The artwork is to be community engaged work because the Theatre is too – this public art installation will play an important role in connecting the Theatre’s users and visitors to the space, both as a prestigious event venue and as a community arts and culture hub.

 

The selected artist(s) must be willing to work with community members to inform the design of the artwork and it is expected that the selected artist(s) will facilitate opportunities for community engagement. The artist will create a digital file of their artwork, which will be provided to the City to fabricate and install onto the glass. Artistic integrity will be respected by all project team members.

Submissions to this call are due March 1, 2021. The selected artist(s) will work with community members to develop the design of the artwork. Public art will be fabricated and installed through Q1 2022 and unveiled in Q3 2022.

Total budget for this project is $15,000 CAD + HST

The City of Mississauga Public Art Program invites Canadian professional artists or artist teams to submit credentials and expressions of interest to create an original public artwork for the exterior metal structure of two pedestrian overpass bridges: Winston Churchill Bridge (on Winston Churchill Blvd north of Britannia Road) and Derry Road Bridge (on Derry Road, east of Glen Erin Drive).

Artists or artist-led teams may submit applications to one or both of the bridges. The proposed artwork can include both two- and three-dimensional components and a combination of materials.

The commissioned artist(s) will be expected to complete the project by October 2021.

Submissions to this call are due March 8, 2021. Up to six (6) artists will be shortlisted and invited to submit a conceptual design proposal as part of Stage Two of the selection process. A detailed Terms of Reference project document will be provided to help short-listed artists prepare their proposals. The shortlisted artists will be paid an honorarium of $500.00 CAD per bridge upon the submission of all items required for Stage Two.

This project is being implemented by StreetARToronto (StART), part of the Neighbourhood Projects Section of the City of Toronto’s Transportation Services Division.

 

 

Background:
StART Partnership Program is designed to encourage active transportation (walking and cycling), add colour and vitality to neighbourhoods to make our streets more inviting and safe, showcase Toronto artists, demonstrate the positive and powerful impacts of diversity and inclusion, and create opportunities for positive engagement among residents, business owners and operators, artists and arts organizations.

StART provides up to $60,000 in funding for partnership projects that support program objectives. StART strives to support a diverse range of artists and organizations, increase mentorship opportunities through street art installations, develop the talents of local emerging artists and expand the variety and scope of projects supported every year.

All proposed projects and their related activities must be located within the City of Toronto with maximum street visibility and neighbourhood impact. Written authorization from the property owner is required at the time of application.

Projects must demonstrate a strong community engagement component. StART requires applicants to host public consultations or events to inform the community about their projects and obtain feedback, to help create a sense of belonging among all. Mentorship or training opportunities for youth or emerging artists are encouraged.

Submissions are evaluated by an Advisory Committee using a consistent set of assessment criteria.

Le Prix Sobey élimine l’âge limite des candidatures. L’appel de candidatures 2021 est ouvert jusqu’au 19 mars 2021.
Le Prix Sobey pour les arts, aujourd’hui reconnu comme l’un des prix privés les plus généreux au monde pour les créateurs visuels contemporains, est ravi d’ouvrir la compétition aux artistes canadiens émergents de tous âges.

Cosmic Bulletin 2021

The Institute of the Cosmos announces a call for papers for publication in the 2021 edition of the Cosmic Bulletin: an online journal influenced by the philosophy of Russian cosmism and its historical and contemporary manifestations. The Cosmic Bulletin seeks to propagate a series of radical imaginaries informed by a multitude of knowledge systems and sustained by collective experimentation.

The 2021 edition takes as its starting point Aleksander Svyatogor’s anarchist affirmation against localism: “If death (a restriction in time) is the primary root of evil in the life of the individual and society, then its secondary root is caused by a restriction in space, which is to say, the primary position accorded by one’s home, hometown, native land or state, and race. At the end of the day, even internationalism could be construed merely as a limitation in terms of the universe.”

In a 1918 pan-anarchist manifesto, brothers Abba and Wolf Gordin charged five societal institutions with humanity’s oppression: capitalism, the state, colonialism, the family unit, and the school. The remedies for this suffering, as well as for Svyatogor’s conception of internationalism, are inherently cosmist. A politics of interplanetarism would necessitate the abolition of the infrastructures that perpetuate statist violence and carceral logics.

To this end, our inquiries are ever-expanding:

What does total liberation look like beyond the confines of space and time? How might we transcend socialization that privileges authoritarianism, tribalism, and gender binaries? Where is the boundary between the safe haven of interplanetarism and the fantasy of escapism? How might a radical politics of care redefine the science and technology of utopian world-building? What exactly does emancipation demand? And to what extent can we apply these urgent intellectual investigations to the present?

We welcome all scholars, artists, activists, and autodidacts in all fields to contribute original studies, critical essays, theory and fiction pieces, and other cross-genre forms of experimental writing. We look forward to traveling together through spatio-temporal wormholes, loopholes, and rabbit holes.

IMPAKT invites emerging and aspiring curators with a specific interest in media art and its relationship to technology and society to apply for the Full Spectrum Curatorship Programme. Applications are open until March 1, 2021.

Full Spectrum Curatorship is a programme from IMPAKT that aims to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and the practical and substantive aspects of curation in the field of media art and contemporary arts dealing with digital technologies and online environments. IMPAKT, as the oldest media art festival in the Netherlands, offers recent graduates and curators at the beginning of their career the opportunity to develop their own curatorial programme under expert guidance. The experience of internationally recognised curators will be complemented by IMPAKT’s extensive archive and contemporary critical programming. In the framework of this training programme, history, theory, contextualisation, organisation, and execution of media art related programmes will be discussed. The programme covers a.o. developing a curatorial concept, critical and societal contextualisation, selection of works, budgets and funding, and presentation formats. The focus will be on time-based media. There will be specific attention to its aspects like technological and logistical character, challenges and possibilities of multi-channel and interactive formats, presentation formats and perception of the public.

-Paulien Dresscher (independent researcher, curator and advisor. Curator of the Interactive programme of the Dutch Film Festival and of Into the Great Wide Open, formerly curating for Cinekid)
-Katerina Gregos (curator, writer and lecturer. Chief curator of the 1st Riga Biennial 2018 and curator at the Schwarz Foundation, Munich/Athens. In 2011 she curated the critically acclaimed exhibition for the Danish Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennial)
-Bart Rutten (artistic director of the Centraal Museum Utrecht. He was previously the head of collections at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Netherlands Media Art Institute)
-Angelique Spaninks (director and curator at MU Hybrid Art House, Eindhoven. She was director and artistic manager at STRP Festival from 2012 to 2018 and international curator for the 6th Guangzhou Triennial in 2018)
-Florian Wüst (independent film curator, has been working for transmediale, Impakt, Werkleitz and many other international festivals and venues)

The programme will take place online from April to June 2021. The opening weekend will feature presentations by curators presenting their practices in lectures, panels in which curators will discuss key topics and meetings between the participants in the programme. Afterwards, the programme consists of weekly meetings, from April to June, in which participants present and get feedback on their curatorial ideas by their assigned coach and the other participants. All meetings will be held in English. The participation fee is EUR 250.

Recent graduates and upcoming curators are specially invited to apply. Talented students can also apply, but it is not possible to receive ECTS. As a participant you are expected to attend all sessions, including the ones in which fellow participants present and discuss their projects. In addition to the collective sessions there will be one on one sessions between participants and coaches. Expect that participation in the programme, including the preparation and research you’ll need to do, will cost you about 8 hours per week.

Contour Biennale
Contour Biennale is a biennale for contemporary art in Mechelen (Belgium). It is the longest-running art biennale in Belgium and is part of an international professional network. Contour began in 2003 as an international platform with a focus on video art and time-based media. Over the previous nine editions, Contour Biennale has grown into a pioneering and widely acclaimed art event in a constantly changing format that appeals to both international visitors and local residents. Strongly embedded in the local fabric, the biennial has been aiming to reflect critically and consistently on current affairs, presenting pressing themes and art that relates to a world in change. The curators of the most recent editions were Jacob Fabricius (2013), Nicola Setari (2015), Natasha Ginwala (2017) and Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez (2019).

Contour Biennale is organised by kunstencentrum nona, a multi-disciplinary art centre that produces and presents performing arts, visual arts and music. A compact team of permanent staff will produce the tenth Contour Biennale in close collaboration with the curator, supporting the curator in anchoring the event in the urban landscape and in maintaining the relationships with national and international partner organisations.

10th edition
Contour Biennale 10 will be a long-running exhibition in Mechelen during the autumn of 2023. The artistic quality of the works exhibited is of prime importance. We aim to reconcile incisive choices of content with an audience that is as wide and diverse as possible.

Inclusivity, fair practice and ecological awareness are values that kunstencentrum nona holds in high esteem. Consequently, Contour Biennale 10 must aim towards the same sustainable development goals throughout the entire process.

Curator
The curator determines the concept, content and form of Contour Biennale 10. The curator has affinity with moving image and apart from curating the biennial is willing to search for connections with the performing arts and music programming of nona. The assignment will run from June 2021 until December 2023.

The curator:
-has access to an extensive network and has an understanding of the international visual arts landscape, as well as a critical perspective;
-has the capacity to occupy curatorial standpoints and to communicate them clearly;
-can free up sufficient time to present and to represent the biennale;
-possesses the necessary management skills to lead staff and has experience in project management;
-can work within a predefined financial framework and is willing to seek extra funding;
-will develop a public programme with both a widening and deepening dimension;
-will bear in mind the context of the medium-sized city where the exhibition is to be held.

Storming the Capitol. Dismantling Confederate and slave trader statues. Refusing to wear a mask. Booing Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. Sabotaging 5G towers. Buying stamps in an attempt to prop up the United States Postal Service. Defying lèse-majesté laws to criticize Thai royalty. Writing ‘Black Lives Matter’ on roads, so large that the message can be read from Earth orbit. All these actions have been performed as protests in 2020 and 2021, marking this as a year of significant dissent. In the United States alone, the Black Lives Matter actions may be the largest protest movement in the country’s history, eclipsing even the protests of the civil rights era. The US presidential election, meanwhile, was a site for trenchant protests that dramatize the situation of commitment-amid-division that protest typically represents—and that beg wider questions of protest as a contemporary mode of political insistence.

While many of the recent protests around the world mark a resurgence of the popular voice, the language of resistance and opposition has become ubiquitous on the political right as well as for progressives. Right-wing populists paint themselves as perennial outsiders, embattled by and protesting against deep state powers and global cabals. Protestors have weaponized ideals of personal freedom to rage against COVID-19-specific health guidance regarding the wearing of face coverings in public. Social media are increasingly sites of and means of coordinating protest actions; even so, social media posts framed as protest actions are frequently denounced as merely ‘performative’ forms of protest and allyship. Debates on the correct and most effective manner of performing protest abound, and once-controversial civil rights heroes are invoked as exemplars of ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ ways to protest. Protest has mainstreamed, and it has become more volatile. It belongs not to any single faction or persuasion but has become pervasive—even while it is fostered as part of the repertoire of political sway, a system-theatre of power.

This issue calls for critical examinations of contemporary performances of protest across the globe. It is interested in ways that protest can be understood as theatre, but more particularly—in a multimodal, interconnected environment—as a form of public manifestation that draws upon a wide repertoire of representational devices. It seeks to address the relationship between embodied action, affective presence, communication and ideological affiliation. How does protest feel, and who is doing the feeling? It considers the performativity of protest. It pays particular regard to the extent to which protest achieves change (however this is defined) and the ways in which historical protests help to inform judgements of the conduct, legitimacy and efficacy of current protest actions. What historical instances are invoked to draw comparisons to current forms of activism and resistance? How do contemporary protests draw on historical repertoires of protest that reflect or extend beyond their specific political contexts? Do protest strategies and tactics need to evolve as languages of protest become a default mode of mainstream political discourse? Our concern with the modal nature of protest, we suggest, might also be historicized. What is it about our times, our modes of communication, our political systems, that help to produce protest as a defining feature of contemporary political process?

We invite contributions in the form of longer essays (up to 7,000 words), shorter provocations (2,000 words) and artist pages. We also welcome suggestions for unique or hybrid formats.

Le sport amateur et professionnel a toujours occupé une place importante dans le domaine des arts. Dans tous les pays où le plaisir et la joie de l’activité sportive sont exaltés, que ce soit sur une patinoire ou un terrain de basketball, de soccer ou de cricket, des artistes comme des commissaires s’appuient sur les aspects matériels, thématiques et structuraux des sports individuels et des sports d’équipe pour créer et penser. À travers le prisme ludique et compétitif d’un maillot d’équipe, d’un ballon, d’une raquette, d’une piscine ou d’un terrain d’athlétisme, bon nombre d’artistes aujourd’hui cherchent à éclairer les points où se croisent les éléments esthétiques et sociopolitiques du sport, de sa pratique, de ses fanclubs, de son déploiement architectural et de sa culture en général.

Depuis longtemps, à titre d’ardents supporters, d’observateurs et observatrices ou participantes et participants, des peintres et des photographes choisissent de renvoyer une image déformée de scènes sportives familières ; des artistes de la sculpture et du textile métamorphosent des parties de l’équipement emblématique par des assemblages inusités ; d’autres remettent en question les codes du jeu et les attitudes typiques dans des performances ; et des artistes de la vidéo retournent l’objectif vers le spectacle en tant que tel, les médias de masse et le public. L’hypervisibilité du sport dans les arts témoigne de sa nature politique inhérente, de la séduction cinétique des corps en mouvement, de la chorégraphie sous-jacente au jeu, de la conception visuelle de la partisanerie, de l’envoutement de la victoire et de l’effet cathartique de la défaite.

[…] Les relations entre le sport et l’art contemporain sont multiples et variées. C’est dans cette optique que Esse arts + opinions invite les autrices et auteurs à fouiller de manière extensive la question du sport en tant que phénomène esthétique, politique, culturel et social étroitement lié aux arts visuels et aux arts de la performance. Qu’est-ce qui séduit dans le sport, quand on le considère comme un évènement frappant sur les plans visuel, dynamique et affectif ? Comment s’y prennent les artistes pour saisir les enjeux et les connotations sociopolitiques du sport et montrer les dessous de ce qu’on présente souvent comme un univers apolitique ? En quoi le culte de l’athlète est-il semblable (ou pas) à celui de l’artiste comme visionnaire héroïque ? Quels tropes, quels codes et quels vocabulaires de la culture sportive sont employés par les artistes, et à quelles fins ?

La revue culturelle dédiée à la scène artistique de la ville de Québec À l’est de vos empires* est à la recherche de textes éclairés et perspicaces, intelligents et stimulants, mais également accessibles et réfléchis. Nous sommes intéressés par les textes critiques consacrés au domaine des arts visuels, mais aussi par les essais artistiques et les créations poétiques.

Nous raffolons de textes traitant de la théorie des arts et désirons également lire vos comptes rendus d’expositions et d’évènements se déroulant dans la capitale.

On demande aux auteur.rice.s intéressé.e.s de faire parvenir à l’adresse d’À l’est, alestdevosempires [arobas] gmail [point] com, une courte proposition de texte (100 mots), accompagnée d’un CV et d’une biographie succincte** (50 mots).
