Appel de projets

Le Vidéographe et Eastern Bloc ont le plaisir d’annoncer leur programme de Résidence + Exposition pour artiste québécois(e) / canadien(ne) en début de carrière.

Œuvres visées : installation vidéo (multi-projection), installation audio, arts interactifs, nouveaux médias.

Le secteur programmation et le secteur création de Vidéographe s’associent à Eastern Bloc pour la deuxième édition du programme de Résidence + Exposition. Ce programme comprend deux volets : 1) une période de recherche et création d’une durée de trois semaines dans le PARC (labo en arts interactifs et nouveaux médias), incluant l’accès aux équipements de Vidéographe et 21 heures de soutien technique; 2) suivie d’une période d’exposition de trois semaines à Eastern Bloc.

Le Vidéographe offre des services de soutien aux artistes des arts médiatiques depuis 37 ans. Le secteur programmation de l’organisme a été créé en 1998 et se consacre à promouvoir et faire connaître l’art vidéo dans ses multiples incarnations et dans les rapports qu’il entretient avec d’autres pratiques artistiques. Eastern Bloc est un nouveau Centre de production et d’exposition en nouveaux médias et arts interdisciplinaires fondé en 2007 et géré par de jeunes artistes.

Ce programme s’adresse aux artistes émergents québécois / canadiens[1] ayant un projet en cours qu’ils souhaitent poursuivre, peaufiner ou développer davantage. Les projets artistiques privilégiés par ce programme sont : des installations en vidéo (multi-projection), art audio, nouveaux médias et arts interactifs.

Programmation Mon espace / Your space

Être de passage à Praxis art actuel pour l’un des blocs de la programmation Mon espace / Your space implique une découverte du lieu dans lequel vous vous retrouverez. Praxis souhaite amener les artistes professionnels du milieu de l’art au-delà du processus habituel de création/production/diffusion. Dans le cadre de sa programmation 2010-2011, le Centre vous invite à déposer des projets pour y questionner ou redéfinir des problématiques liées à votre démarche artistique ou approfondir certaines facettes de votre pratique. Praxis offre un espace de réflexion, des circuits d‘échange, et des collaborations avec les communautés et ses territoires afin de soutenir votre processus de création.

Sous le thème Mon espace / Your space, les artistes doivent proposer un projet qui s’inspire des particularités et des caractéristiques géographiques, sociales, économiques ou culturelles propres à la Ville de Sainte-Thérèse ou à sa région. Les artistes seront jumelés à des membres-accompagnateurs nommés par le Centre et l’agente de développement de la Ville de Sainte-Thérèse sera mise à leur disposition. Praxis considère ces paramètres comme des éléments devant stimuler la création tout en tenant compte des spécificités de la démarche artistique de chacun. Les artistes sélectionnés réaliseront une série d’explorations et d’expérimentations afin de développer et d’enrichir leur projet initialement proposé. Le rapprochement avec les communautés étant primordial pour Praxis, les artistes doivent également travailler de concert avec les citoyens et les intégrer dans leur processus de création. Le public pourra donc être témoin de l’évolution de chaque projet tout au long du bloc, en particulier lors des séjours des artistes en expérimentation et à travers les traces de leur projet en cours laissées dans le laboratoire-atelier.

Un bloc de programmation réunit trois artistes. Toujours en collaboration avec le Centre, ces derniers doivent réalisés leur projet sur une période de trois mois : bloc d’automne (mi-septembre à mi-décembre 2010) ou le bloc du printemps (début avril à fin juin 2011). Pendant ces périodes, les trois artistes seront amenés à se croiser, à échanger et à partager leurs idées. Ils participeront également aux rencontres de travail pilotées par Praxis dans le but de susciter les discussions et faire progresser les projets en cours. L’une des propositions explorées devra être finalisée et présentée hors nos murs, dans le cadre d’un événement spécial réunissant le travail des trois artistes. Organisé à la fin du bloc, l’événement sera conçu en collaboration soit avec des groupes de citoyens, avec des commerçants ou avec des organismes de nos territoires.

En adéquation avec la vision revisitée de la résidence-laboratoire, le Centre tente de s’éloigner du cadre habituel de présentation en salle pour valoriser davantage le développement de nouveaux projets, l’avancement des pratiques artistiques et le rapprochement des publics.

Votre dossier doit comprendre :
– un curriculum vitae (3 pages maximum)

– un court texte expliquant votre démarche artistique (250 mots maximum)

– un texte décrivant votre intention de recherche et vos motivations (250 mots maximum)

– une documentation visuelle de votre travail avec description :

– 15 images numériques maximum, clairement identifiées

– 1 bande audio/vidéo VHS ou DVD format NTSC (3 minutes maximum)

– un dossier de presse (facultatif)

– une enveloppe de retour préaffranchie pour le renvoi des documents. Prenez note que les dossiers sans enveloppe de retour préaffranchie seront détruits au mois d’août de l’année suivante

Le centre n’accepte pas les dossiers envoyés par courriel.

Économisez le papier. Tout votre dossier doit être remis sur CD-ROM, DVD ou clé USB dans les formats suivants :

– Textes format “.PDF”, “.DOC” ou “.RTF”;
– Images format “.JPG” seulement;
– présenter des fichiers compatibles avec PC seulement;
– soumettre des images d’une résolution de 72ppp n’excédant pas 1.0 Mo;
– Dossier de presse et documentation d’appui numérisé (“.JPG” ou “.PDF”).

Assurez-vous que vos supports informatiques soient lisibles dans l’environnement Windows et qu’ils ne requièrent aucun téléchargement.

Nous n’acceptons pas :

– des présentations sous forme PowerPoint;
– des fichiers compressés (au moyen de WinZip ou de Stuffit, par exemple);
– des hyperliens menant à des sites Web.

Barèmes des droits, redevances et services offerts aux artistes

Praxis art actuel défraie à l’artiste :

– Un droit d’exposition de 1 200 $
– Un per diem de 15 $ par jour, 10 jours maximum (150 $)
– Frais de production 200 $
– Frais de déplacement et de transport (maximum de 350 $) payable à la réception des factures

Total des droits et des dépenses : 1 850 $

Praxis assume les frais de :
– Hébergement de 10 jours maximum (pas nécessairement consécutifs), petit déjeuner et souper inclus (d’une valeur pouvant atteindre 300 $) payable au membre-hébergeur
– Soutien par un membre-accompagnateur (un maximum de 30 heures par artiste, pouvant atteindre des frais payés de 420 $)
– Rédaction d’un texte sur l’expérience vécue et le travail effectué (150 $)
– Production d’une publication à discuter en groupe et avec le Centre (450 $)

Total maximal des dépenses défrayées : 1 320 $

Praxis offre les services suivants :
– Obtention des permis et des autorisations
– Recherche de commandites spécifiques (au besoin)
– Coordination des projets et des réunions de travail

Coût total maximum défrayé par Praxis pour chacun des artistes : 3 220 $

La sélection des dossiers sera effectuée par le comité de programmation.

Call for Ladyfest Toronto’s art exhibition | OCT 25

Over 2 weeks in late November, Ladyfest Toronto’s art
exhibition will explore the ways in which women and
transpeople relate to the people in our lives. We are looking for
work that examines and interrogates, transgresses, re-situates
and celebrates the categories of family, parent, friend, lover,
partner, stranger, in the relationships that shape our identities.

What do we learn from the families who raised us, and what do
we leave behind (or wish we could)? How do we construct new
families? Communities of colour, queer communities,
Indiginous communities, immigrant communities, play groups,
reading groups, roommates, partners, collectives…. What kinds
of relationships do we seek, and how do we find them? How do
they challenge or reinforce our vision of ourselves? How do
relationships break us and how can they build us up again?

Ladyfest Toronto is accepting art and proposals in all media
(drawing, painting, printmaking, performance, video,
installation, ETC). Because we are working on tight deadlines,
work submitted should closely reflect that which you wish to
exhibit. Works in progress will be considered with
documentation and a clear proposal. Your submission should
include the following:

time-based work)

Eyelevel Gallery is seeking proposals for the 2010-2011
exhibition season in our main gallery space. We are interested
in progressive forward-looking practices; the fruition of
innovative ideas; inventive approaches to artistic production;
and work based on an articulate theoretical and/or critical
and/or poetic thesis. We encourage and facilitate the
presentation of artists and artworks that have not been exhibited
in this locale. We are enthusiastic about artists’ most recent
endeavors and art forms that propel contemporary production
and incite conversation.

Eyelevel Gallery accepts proposals on an ongoing basis.
Proposals are reviewed by a peer committee once a year and
reviews for the upcoming programming year will be accepted
until October 31, 2009. Eyelevel Gallery pays fees that meet
CAR/FAC guidelines. Special projects may have other
deadlines throughout the year. These will be updated on the

SAVAC | Call for Submissions: MONITOR 6

SAVAC (South Asian Visual Arts Centre) invites submissions for
its sixth annual experimental short film and video screening
program, MONITOR 6.

MONITOR 6 is dedicated to the presentation of experimental
short films and videos by and/or about South Asians from
Canada and around the world. We invite independent and
innovative short films and videos that explore the aesthetic and
form of the moving image and its relation to narrative.
MONITOR 6 encourages new experimental work that takes risks
and beckons the viewer’s active engagement.

Selected works will be screened at the sixth annual short film
and video program, MONITOR 6 in Toronto, Canada in March
2010. MONITOR 6 will be curated by Toronto-based video artist
and cultural critic Richard Fung in collaboration with a jury
(TBA).

Works must be under 30 minutes and produced between 2007–
2009.
Submissions from first time directors are welcome. Artists’ fees
will be paid.

The EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts will select one local visual artist to create new work in the Ledge Gallery throughout the months of June and July. The artwork will then be exhibited for the month of August. An artist exhibition fee of $1500.00 as well as financial support of to cover art material costs will be provided.

Please note that the Ledge Gallery is located in high traffic areas, members of the public from all ages and backgrounds will be viewing the artwork. The space is most conducive to sculptural, performing/installation works.

Each window is painted theatre black, they all have different measurements, with some equipped with lighting and power sources. Exhibitions will run in 4 – 12 week intervals depending on the needs of the Calgary art community. Artist groups and collectives are strongly encouraged to apply for these spaces. Artist honorariums are paid for the Window Galleries. Please note that both the LEDGE and the Window Galleries are located in high traffic areas, members of the public from all ages and backgrounds will be viewing the artwork.

LEDGE GALLERY 2010/2011 (CALGARY, ALBERTA)
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: 4:30PM, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2009

This unique space is located in the +15 and overlooks Centre Court from the second floor of the Centre. The gallery has windows on three sides, a cement floor and new track lighting. The LEDGE is most conducive to sculpture, installation and performing pieces – please note that the work is viewed from outside of the windows looking in. Exhibitions in this location will run for three month intervals.

Area Specifications:
There are two power outlets. The longest length of the space is 24 ft 11 inches (connects both spaces), the shortest length is 10 ft 6 inches (the space is constructed into two boxes that are connected to create one space, the second box is 13 ft 10 inches). There is also a balcony space that overlooks the downstairs hall near Arts Learning.

Annual Conference of Performance Studies international
Toronto, 9-13 June 2010

PSi 16, Performing Publics, will take place in Toronto as part of a collaboration between York University’s Faculty of Fine Arts and the Ontario College of Art & Design. The conference will investigate the power of performance to intervene in, reshape, and reinvigorate the public sphere at the beginning of the twenty-first century. We invite proposals that take up notions of “public” in a variety of ways, pointing to the critically generative and fraught aspects of the term as it has been adopted within performance studies.

The conference will theorize the relationship between performance, “official” public culture (public culture framed and sanctioned by state and/or corporate institutions), and the production of what Michael Warner calls “counter-publics” (social formations developed in opposition to the discourses and interests of the official public sphere). As such, it will explore the coming together of individuals as a social totality – as a community, nation, organization, etc. – and the enactment of public as a form of social activism, as a means of rehearsing, querying, and producing alternative forms of local and global citizenship. In both contexts, performance has the potential to frame affective and critically nuanced responses to public events, issues and crises and thus to model politically and ethically engaged forms of public life. The conference also seeks to problematize the idea of “publics” as it has been applied to performance by exploring the limitations of this term and the kinds of social exclusions that it often has been used to rationalize.

Guiding questions will include: How are we hailed by various publics, and how does this shape our behaviors and social interactions? How are publics spatially and temporally constituted? In what ways do publics participate in forms of activism, civic engagement, and “poetic world-making” (Warner)? What affects and effects are produced by such utopian interventions? Our discussion of these issues will reflect the vibrant history of urban intervention and “public spacing” movements in Toronto in which artists and activists have worked together to change the shape of our shared local and civic spaces.

On this occasion, JavaMuseum is planning a big show online, entitled: “CELEBRATE!”

JavaMuseum, founded in 2000 and active since 2001 as a corporate part of [NewMediaArtProjectNetwork:||cologne – www.nmartproject.net, the experimental platform for art and New Media, belongs to the relevant platforms for Internet based art on the net.
Under the direction of Wilfried Agricola de Cologne, JavaMuseum realised more than 20 showcases and competitions of netart in a global context between 2001 and 2009 and is hosting a comprehensive collection of netart since the year 2000 including more than 400 artists and 1000 art works.
In 2006, JavaMuseum launched JIP – JavaMuseum Interview Project, a context for spotlighting the background of the artists creations, containing meanwhile more than 80 interviews with expersts and artists in the fields of digital and electronic art.
On occasion of its 10th anniversary, JavaMuseum is planning to launch in autumn 2010 a netart show, entitled: Celebrate!
in order to celebrate netart as an exciting, but anyway yet widely underestimated art genre.
This represents the best reason for inviting artists active on the fields of new, digital and electronic media to submit their latest or aöso their older excellent netart art projects.

The International Short Film Festival Oberhausen is one of the major international crossroads for the short form, unique in the range of forms and genres it presents to the public, and particularly well known for its spotlight on experiments.
In short film, anything is possible: formally, content-wise, or aesthetically. Hard to pin down, extremely open – and for that reason endlessly fascinating – short film remains an inexhaustible reservoir from which cinema, television, Internet and even the museum cull new visual languages. Oberhausen’s competitions are equally open to artistic and cinematic trends, they are exhibitions as well as film programmes. The festival is always looking for works that defy tradition, that have the courage to try out something new.
Oberhausen stands for short distances, intensive discussions, sold-out theatres and plenty of opportunities to make contacts. The four competitions, featuring some 140 new films and videos from all around the world, attract television programme editors as well as curators, festival representatives and journalists. Films vie for some 40,000 euros in prize money. The main award of the festival is the Grand Prize of the City of Oberhausen, which includes a grant of 7,500 euros, in the International Competition. A 5,000-euro prize awaits the winner of the German Competition. Other honours include the 2,500-euro ARTE Award for a European short film and the 3sat Promotional Award, likewise for 2,500 euros.

Call for: a video exhibition and a temporary and free editing workshop
It is by chance, in a dead street’s far end that we faced a white padded door, opaque windows secured by bars and a turned off neon. Trapped in Freedom, the inscritpion was unlit, we could imagine it shining in the night a deep red and evocative light.
This sentence questionned us all the more we didn’t know this place’s nature. A one evening peculiar cabaret drawn from a David Lynch imagination, a libertine meeting place, rare liquors and cigars club… Anyway, this place seemed contained in its wording an entire paradox, one of a sensual pleasure, assumed, shown and restrained to this area, condensed behind the walls and hidden from prying eyes. This paradox was for the more obvious that the street was isolated, empty, but close to a wide and passing road. As if the answer or possibility for an emancipated freedom was actually just before our eyes. An obvious fact so strong that it cannot be assumed or seen as real.
It is this exact feeling which this place was emiting, an unrealistic atmosphere, a suspended time, a breach given to the onlooker in an innocent way, still tantalizing. No way between an assumed freedom, the idealized one, the return to nature, the emancipation from the powerful, the ethical, racial, social and political conflicts anihilation…
Live freedom as a release of burdens due to our environment. To focus on a will, a space peculiar to oneself, to individualities… To adopt freedom, take it fully, means to seize new spaces, to make new choices…
And yet the idea is not that simple. Freedom is a delicate notion and value, fascinating, unpredictable. As for who takes some liberty may take it off others, who enjoys freedom may loose a secured framework, a set of references and foundings, who wants to be free may be put in danger because of his/her own choices. Trapped in Freedom synthesizes the paradox of a dear and desired state at the same time feared and mostly let in an utopic idea condition.
Any social project is based on consensus and thereof asks for new definitions of individual liberties while arising new ones relative to a global, general and becoming homogenic corps.
Oudeis, a cultural organization in Le Vigan (France), has decided to dedicate its coming
Digital, Electronic and Media Art Symposium on this issue. Thus, several exhibits will take place in town in different places from the 5th to 13th december 2009. There are two types of
call for proposal for two specific projects.
First, a video exhibition. Oudeis invites all artists interested in the issue Trapped in Freedom to send us a proposal and short bio.
The second project open to participants is a temporary and free editing workshop. Temporary because it will last only the time of the Symposium, free because it will be nomad and will be moved from place to place to mix contents. A silkscreen printing workshop will be set and an edition will be publish, with critical contents, poems, analysis and esthetics
statements, drawings, photographies, collages…
All produced in real time, in the manner of performance, in front of the public.

Creating new environments. Gendered spaces, and gender in the creation of space. Architecture by women, and the potential for the construction of a feminist architecture. Actively gender-segregated spaces, as both empowering and oppressing. Queer-segregated spaces, similarly. The acts of human intimacy, sexual intercourse, and procreation in weightlessness and the extreme environments of space. Erotic space tourism. The visibility of sex, genders, and relationship structures in various spaces. Spaces of sexual control and permissiveness. Sexual subcultures as spaces of social division. Spatial enforcement of relationship structures and gendered power structures. Geotagging as an expression for kinks. The sexual reading of architecture, especially around historical and modern styles and concerning ornament and detail. The eroticization of buildings — architecture for whorehouses, the Las Vegas strip, people who want to sleep with buildings. What makes design “sexy” and the construction of “sexy” as an architectural category as a comment on late heteronormativity. The terabyte gloryhole. The space in which the male gaze occurs and the space it defines.
Heterosexism, misogyny, and heterocentrism reinforce the dominant cultural structure and contribute to the oppression of large sectors of society. Sexuality, sex, gender, and related constructs are heavily implicated in and reproduce space, and are also constrained and restricted by it and by heterosexism. Let’s explore this space of interactions — send us your ideas for talks, performances, films and machines.

AV Festival is an international festival of electronic arts featuring visual art, music and moving image. A biennial event, the festival takes place in the urban centres of Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland and Middlesbrough in the North East of England. The next AV Festival will take place 5-14 March 2010 and will be based around the theme of Energy. The festival will explore energy as a force through which all of life is connected, transformed, renewed and destroyed.

This is an open call for moving image and short film works that relate to the festival theme of energy. The chosen works will be screened to members of the public on the Live Sites BBC Big Screen in Centre Square Middlesbrough opposite mima (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art) during the festival. The designated screening times will be during three days of the festival: 5, 10 and 12 March. This project is a partnership between AV Festival, Middlesbrough Council and the Live Sites Big Screen team at the BBC.

New Zero Art Space Myanmar 
Artist-in-Residence Program

New Zero Art Space, Yangon, Myanmar invites visual (and performance) artists from Asia, Europe and North America to the first Artist-in-Residency Program in Myanmar. Myanmar is a unique and old culture in the heart of South East Asia, famous for its stunning gold pagodas, its kind and gentle people and its strong Buddhist history.
The program is an exceptional opportunity to support artists from around the world who have a keen interest in Myanmar art and culture. The philosophy of the program also encourages an ongoing exchange with the art and culture from the artist’s host country.
The residency is one month in the heart of Yangon. New Zero Art Space will provide one round trip air ticket, accommodation and living expenses during the residency. The residency will also include a studio and exhibition space. The artist will be requested to exhibit his/her work at the end of the residency with promotional materials in the form of a brochure will be included, so that the work and artistic and cultural ideas can be shared and exchanged with a larger audience.

Zeppelin 2009 – Festival of Sound Projects

Zeppelin 2009 – Sounds of Power / Listening to Fear is dedicated to thinking about issues that have been insidiously encircling us for some time. We are concerned about signs that might suggest we’re going backwards in terms of hard-won social and intellectual achievements and freedoms. This concern led us to pose the following series of questions, which we hope will go some way to inspiring the pieces presented:
1. What does it mean to receive and/or give an order?
2. The verbs ‘obey’ and ‘hear’ are known to be closely linked. How, then, should we view a society that appears increasingly ready to obey without stopping to think? What link is there between obeying and believing?
3. Why do we have a need for absolute truths, even where we know it’s impossible? Why do we think we already know everything? Do we need to learn techniques or not? Why do we think anyone can do anything? Shouldn’t we respect the ability to do things? To what extent is the term ‘art’ relevant or not?
4. In what sense have we moved from alienation at work to alienation in every, or almost every, sphere in life? Are we losing our awareness of alienation?
5. What does it mean to talk about control in the name of security? Don’t we feel safe? Why do we allow things to be done in the name of democracy that we’d condemn in a dictatorship?
6. Does a welfare society mean a growth society? (Cage said: “I don’t know if life is characterised by progress.”) Why do we think we live in the best of worlds?
7. What role or roles do sounds play in a welfare society and a growth society? Are they related to a loss of privacy? To what extent have neighbours become a new system of control in the hands of the state?
8. How do we view the fact that our instruments for organising sounds are linked to instruments designed to control? Is there a relationship between organising and controlling?
9. At a time when words are being chipped away at until they have a new meaning set down by law, and people who disagree with the criteria of others risk being branded as intolerant, how can we unmask this warped language without discrediting things further?
We invite people interested in sound to think about these questions and send us their sound works.
The pieces will be played through a system of eight loudspeakers on 10, 11 and 12 December 2009 at the Barcelona Centre for Contemporary Culture.
Terms and Conditions
All works received will be accepted provided they meet the following conditions:
1. Pieces should be no longer than ten (10) minutes.
2. The format for the pieces should be WAV or AIFF at 44.1 kHz and 16 bits. Pieces may have up to eight tracks. Each track should be in a separate file (so a piece with eight tracks should have eight files each containing a single track).
3. The following documentation should be included:
3.1. Comments on the piece.
3.2. An artistic biography of the author.
3.3. A document signed by the author either giving or refusing explicit authorisation for the piece to be posted on the internet.
3.4. A document signed by the author giving authorisation for the piece to form part of the Sonoscop sound art archive.
4. The pieces and documentation should be sent on a CD/DVD by 15 November 2009 to:
