White Rabbit is a 7-day interdisciplinary residency set in a rural
landscape on the edge of the Bay of Fundy in Economy, Nova Scotia.
The residency is process focussed, encouraging artists to create work
that is responsive to their environment. During the week-long
residency, participants work with their initial idea as a malleable, living
thing, and allow it to take shape as they engage with the Red Clay
landscape. Residents are free to wander through orchards, stream
beds, tall forests, hills, meadows, and shorelines and to make their
work in whichever location they are most drawn to.
Artists from a broad range of disciplines are encouraged to apply
(textiles, dance, theatre, ceramics, paint, poetry, philosophy, words,
audio, projection, documentary, film, performance, music, you-name-it).
The most important thing is to be willing to engage with the landscape,
and with other artists, to find a conversation between the process/end
result, and the chosen site.

Call-to- Artist: Expression of Interest and Qualifications (Stage 1)
By: City of Kelowna Public Art Program
Project: Kelowna Police Services Building
Budget: $120,000 CAD
Submit by: 4pm PT. June 28, 2018

The City of Kelowna, through its Public Art Program, announces the commissioning of a site-specific artwork to be located within a public plaza and forecourt space of the newly constructed Kelowna Police Services Building (KPSB). The artist is to be selected through a two stage process, as determined by the City’s public art selection committee.

The KPSB serves as the home for the local Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) detachment, as well as City of Kelowna staff that are responsible for city wide policing services and community outreach programs. A key design component of the new building is a public plaza / forecourt space that serves as the building’s main entrance. The artwork will be highly visible from the street, as well as from inside the building’s main reception area, and will serve as the main feature element within this pedestrianized space.

It is the collaboration between the City of Kelowna and the RCMP that makes for a unique opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of the Kelowna Police Services in creating a safe, healthy and vibrant community. No theme or material for the artwork has been determined and it can be either abstract or figurative. As part of an expression of interest artists are encouraged to explore their own ideas and thoughts in the form of a written brief.

A maximum budget of $120,000 CAD has been allocated for the commissioning of the artwork. This sum is inclusive of all Artists’ fees, technical consulting, insurance requirements, fabrication, installation, documentation, travel expenses and all other related costs. This call is the first of a two stage selection process. The call-out submission does not require the preparation of a proposal. Those artists interested are invited to submit their expression of interest to the City of Kelowna prior to the deadline closure 4pm PT. June 28, 2018.

Artist Eligibility and Document Link:

This competition is open to all professional artists and artist-led teams as defined by the Canadian Council for the Arts.
