Nouvelles de l’AGAVF
Créer des liens entre les communautés à travers l’art contemporain au Sommet des arts de l’Arctique
La première prestation de la série aura lieu dans le cadre du Sommet des arts de l’Arctique qui se tiendra sur les territoires traditionnels de la Première Nation Kwanlin Dün et du Conseil des Ta’an Kwäch’än à Whitehorse, au Yukon, du 27 au 29 juin 2022 et sera animée par l‘artiste multidisciplinaire et musicien Geronimo Inutiq (Iqaluit/Winnipeg). L’activité fera vivre à des communautés une expérience de création participative prenant la forme d’un talkshow radiophonique, coanimé en français avec l’artiste franco-yukonnais Christophe Ballet. Pour l’occasion, l’AGAVF met à contribution l’Association Franco-Yukonnaise (AFY) pour créer les liens avec les structures locales et rejoindre leurs communautés. Les étudiants du secondaire (de 12-18 ans) pourront notamment participer aux ateliers de production radio pilotés par Geronimo Inutiq et l’entendre sur le rôle des radios communautaires dans les communautés inuites du Nord. Les étudiants seront encouragés à explorer les parallèles avec les radios communautaires dans les communautés minoritaires (francophones, acadienne et de la Nation Métis).

Call to Artists for Light Based Artwork
The City of Mississauga is seeking new or existing light-based artwork to be a part of Light Up the Square 2022 – an annual outdoor, multi-week destination festival of lights in Mississauga’s downtown core! Apply now.
We are looking for interactive and/or light-based artworks – sculpture, installation, multimedia, projection, performance, and digital/virtual projects such as VR and AR experiences – that can activate the space.

Curated by Talia Golland, the 2022 IA Current exhibition will explore themes of digital materiality: the embodied and tactile experiences of using consumer technology, the physical infrastructures that support the internet, and the physical experiences mediated, referenced, and suggested through the intrinsic metaphors of digital space.
A call for works is now open for projects which draw aesthetic, material, and metaphoric lines of connection between digital and physical spaces, objects, and experiences. Artists working across new media and hybrid practices are invited to apply, with a particular interest in installation-based work in which new media techniques are combined with other mediums.
Questions for consideration:
What architectures, spaces, and objects are suggested by the visual and operational metaphors of past and present personal computer technologies and devices?
What are the physical actions and movements implied by and/or involved in the search, the scroll, the point and click, the copy+paste?
What new dynamics of spectatorship are constructed when interface imagery and digital objects are untethered from monitors and screens, reconfigured spatially and/or recreated materially?
What are the affective, emotional associations of the aesthetics of the earlier internet(s)?

Fort Gallery is a non-profit, artist-run center situated on the banks of the Fraser River,
in the historic town of Fort Langley, on unceded q”ic”y” (Katzie), q”‘:n””n” (Kwantlen),
Mthekwi (Matsqui), and semyame (Semiahmoo) territory.
Fort Gallerys mission is to cultivate public appreciation for contemporary art and to
support the work of contemporary artists. To achieve this, we prioritize providing artists
with resources. Artists are given exhibition space, critical direction, artist fees,
administrative support, photographic documentation, and technical support required to
realize their projects. Each artist has different needs, and we strive to address these
individually. By lowering barriers, we hope to encourage artists to take risks and
experiment with their practices.
We are seeking proposals for
solo and group exhibitions and exhibitions organized by
artists, independent curators or collectives for our October 2022- December 2023
programming year. Exhibitions run 6-8 weeks.
The Fort Gallery welcomes and encourages submissions from emerging and
established artists of all abilities, ages, cultures, ethnicities, citizenships, gender
identities, and races. We welcome submissions of ideas/proposals, completed works,
and works in progress.

As part of Open Studio’s ongoing commitment to becoming a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive organization, we are excited to share that our next calls for residencies and exhibitions are directed to artists who identify as Black, Indigenous, and People(s) of Colour. Our Visiting Artist Residency call is directed specifically to Black artists interested in print. This will result in an upcoming year of public programming (running September 2023 – July 2024) that will celebrate and support the work of BIPOC creators working across print-based media.

The Etobicoke Civic Centre Public Art

1. ETOBICOKE CIVIC CENTRE: INTRODUCTION
The Etobicoke Civic Centre (ECC) is a new civic centre in the former suburb of Etobicoke located on a 13.8 acre property bounded by Kipling Avenue to the west, Bloor and Dundas Streets to the north and the TTC/CPR rail corridor to the southeast. The ECC is situated on the Ancestral territory and gathering place of the Anishnaabe, the Haudenosaunee, the Tionontati (Petun), the Wendat, and the treaty territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit.
Locally known as the Westwood Theatre Lands and “spaghetti junction,” the notoriously complicated “Six Point Interchange” where Kipling Avenue, Bloor Street and Dundas Street intersect is currently undergoing a major reconfiguration. Situated at the heart of the new community being built, the ECC will replace the existing municipal buildings at 399 The West Mall and incorporate a new civic hub and a civic square.
Following an international competition, design of the civic centre was awarded to internationally acclaimed architect, Henning Larsen and Adamson and Associate Architects and PMA Landscape Architects (the “Design Team”). Completion is expected for the winter of 2027/2028.
Four public art commissions are in design development having been awarded to Indigenous artists.
Conceived as an “integrated civic hub” this mixed-use development will feature municipal offices, a Council Chamber, civic offices and a citizen services centre, multi-purpose meeting rooms, a daycare centre, a community recreation centre with a pool and running track, a Toronto Public Library District Branch, an art gallery, and a large outdoor civic square surrounded by ample new sustainable landscaping. CreateTO, in collaboration with the City of Toronto’s Economic Development and Culture division and the Indigenous Affairs Office initiated the Public Art Program as an integral component in the design and development of the new ECC. The project is now being implemented by Corporate Real Estate Management of the City of Toronto, with the assistance of advisors Karen Mills and Rebecca Baird.
2. INVITATION: PUBLIC ART OPPORTUNITY
The City of Toronto is committed to reflecting the diversity of all Canadians and especially the residents of Etobicoke, in this public art program. Our goal is to strengthen the connection between public art and civic engagement ultimately striving to build connectedness amongst our communities.
The City’s 10-Year Public Art Strategy aims to harness the potential of public art to advance city-building priorities such as equity and inclusion, environmental resiliency, reconciliation with Indigenous communities, and place-making, among others. We welcome and encourage artists with lived experience as a member of Indigenous, Black, or racialized communities to apply for this opportunity to help contribute to the vision of public art in Toronto that is accessible and reinforces neighbourhood character.
Professional, experienced artists born or living in Canada are hereby invited to submit their qualifications as the first stage in a two-stage process to commission public art for the ECC.
Two opportunities are presented:
Suspended artwork to be installed in the Atrium of the ECC
Wall mounted artwork for the wall adjacent to the Library entrance.
Artists are invited to submit their credentials for the consideration of the art expert Selection Panel who will identify Finalists to advance to the second, Concept Stage. No ideas nor submission of existing works will be considered.

4. FINALISTS FOR THE OPPORTUNITY
Up to 4 pre-qualified candidates will advance as Finalists for each opportunity. The Finalists will be paid for their complete and compliant Concepts. Finalists will be provided with an Opportunity Brief prior to development of their Artwork Concepts.
5. GOALS FOR THE ARTWORK
The spectacular Atrium has been designed as a warm, active, welcoming space that reflects the character of the community and that serves as the central hub leading visitors to the wide array of services and activities provided in the ECC. The atrium will be a community gathering space: full of light and featuring a strong connection to the natural environment in terms of materials and views.
The Library will serve residents and visitors. As a hub for learning, the library will symbolize learning and personal enrichment.
The Artworks should:
Serve as a symbol celebrating the richness and diversity of Toronto and in particular, the Etobicoke area
Charm, engage the community at large and the general public by fostering connection and dialogue; it should be readable and interesting to those with art expertise and to those without art expertise
Serve as welcoming elements inviting exploration by visitors and staff
Serve as intuitive wayfinding landmarks when negotiating through the complex
The Artworks should be iconic, impactful, durable and require minimal maintenance
Requirements: Artworks must be integrated into their locations with attention to design and technical considerations such as weight, UV resistance, ease of maintenance, use of fire rated materials and impact on facility operations.
The Artworks must be unique. We will not consider acquiring editioned works or versions of existing works.
6. ELIGIBILITY
We are inviting interested experienced professional artists, born or living in Canada, to submit their credentials for consideration as part of the first stage of a two-stage public art process.
Proponents must be experienced professional artists with a strong history of public exhibition, a background including training as artists including equivalent informal or traditional training, and curator, community or peer recognition as artists.
Architects and designers / design studios are not being considered for this project.

StreetARToronto Just Us Art Project Requirements
For this Request for Concept Descriptions, the City of Toronto is seeking submissions from street, mural and graffiti artists or artist collectives who have access to a wall exposed to city streets with written authorization from the property owner granting the artist permission to paint their mural concept on the wall.
All projects must be located in Toronto.
The goal of this Request for Concept Descriptions is to establish a roster of projects eligible to participate in the StART “Just Us” Art Project. An Advisory Panel will select up to 10 projects from the roster to receive up to $3,000 toward the creation of their project.
Background and Objectives
“Just Us” art call is a request for mural art proposals in support and recognition of Black lives and the rights of Indigenous Peoples, produced by StreetARToronto (StART) in collaboration with Nia Centre for the Arts and 7th Generation Imagemakers. The “Just Us” art call seeks mural concepts that create awareness surrounding social injustice, equity, race relations and community engagement. Project proposals should speak to historic and current social issues and movements within Black, Indigenous and BIPOC communities, and the importance, benefits and opportunities to build a better future through inclusion, collaboration and knowledge sharing.

The following qualifications would be helpful:
2+ years of experience working in roles of responsibility and leadership in media arts or a related field, including substantial experience in creative, managerial and administrative areas:

Success in writing arts grants and knowledge of arts funding

Position: Researcher/Archivist
Start Date: September 2022
Part time: $25/hr. 20 hr./week, 6 months

Job Description:
Reporting to the Director/Curator, the Researcher/Archivist (RA) will be acquiring, storing and researching textual material, pictures, maps, architectural documents, electronic materials, films and videos, sound recordings, and multimedia materials of Latin American Artists in Canada. For the duration of the contract the RA will be sourcing and gathering this information in order to create a database of Latin American Artists in Canada. This database will be hosted virtually and it is the responsibility of the RA to arrange and maintain it. The RA will be self-confident, highly organized, with strong interpersonal, communication skills and show a positive attitude.
The primary responsibilities of the RA include:
Historic research to update databases.
Support the development of the database by researching, sourcing and preparing images, writing copy, and sourcing information.
Creating an online database of Latin American/Latinx artists in Canada
Qualifications:
Successful completion of postsecondary education in a related discipline
Have experience working in heritage, museums, or galleries
Have proven research skills
Have a strong attention to detail
Proficiency in website maintenance, social media marketing, database maintenance, word processing, and excel.
Proficiency in Typo 3, and basic web builders (ex: Format)
High level of professionalism
Experience using online communication platforms such as Zoom.
Proficiency in Spanish/Portuguese/French is an asset
Knowledge and familiarity of contemporary Latin American art and artists is an asset.
