Nous voilà à onze mois de la troisième édition de la Foire d’art alternatif de Sudbury (FAAS 3) et avant même d’avoir lancé cet appel, une douzaine de centres d’artistes au pays ont confirmé leur participation. Pour ceux qui ne sont pas familiers avec l’événement, cliquez sur les Foires antérieurs FAAS 1 | FAAS 2
Le concept pour la prochaine Foire est : L’art au pied carré.
À l’occasion les artistes seront invités à créer en direct à l’intérieur d’un enclos : un espace clôturé et érigé sur mesure selon les besoins de l’artiste. Les enclos seront installés à l’intérieur ou à l’extérieur du Marché des fermiers ou encore dans d’autres endroits publics au centre ville de Sudbury.

L’extase
Folie/Culture, organisme en art actuel qui suscite la réflexion sur des questions de santé mentale en empruntant des pistes de recherche inusitées, vous invite à soumettre vos projets les plus fous ! Vous êtes artiste professionnel ou un collectif d’artistes et vous avez des idées surprenantes, indomptables, extravagantes ? ça pourrait nous séduire ! Par son mandat ouvert, Folie/Culture favorise la pluridisciplinarité mais est également sensible à toutes les pratiques artistiques.
La spiritualité, la religion, la recherche du sens de la vie sont des notions importantes pour de nombreuses personnes aux prises avec des problèmes émotifs. Nous désirons aborder ces conceptions par la thématique de l’extase. Dans la quête du sens, les réponses viennent indifféremment de la raison pure ou des dérives de la raison. Or, quels sont les chemins de l’extase aujourd’hui ? Comment nommer et qualifier le retour du religieux, la génération spontanée de nouvelles églises et sectes, les pratiques corporelles du corps exalté, le refus de la raison, la montée du créationnisme, parallèlement à la croissance exponentielle des réseaux sociaux sur la toile sociale ?
Nous supposons, avec un brin d’ironie, que la vie est une pratique extatique et qu’il convient ici d’en explorer d’autres.
Nous vous demandons d’envoyer vos propositions pour :
1 / Appel de projets de performances pour la soirée de performances Extase, un chien écrasé qui scintille, prévue en mars 2012.
Et/ou
2 / Appel de projets de toutes disciplines (excluant la performance) pour l’évènement international Extase, la vie et autres pratiques extatiques, qui se déroulera les 18, 19 et 20 octobre 2012.
La sélection des projets se fera à l’automne 2011. Folie/Culture assurera le bouclage financier pour les projets ayant été retenus. Notez que nous n’avons pas de locaux ni d’équipement de production ou de diffusion, ce qui nous oblige à travailler en étroites collaborations et à réinventer les lieux de diffusion.
Votre dossier doit contenir : un curriculum vitæ, une courte biographie, une description de votre projet, votre démarche artistique, un CD ou DVD d’œuvres récentes (maximum 10) ainsi qu’une enveloppe de retour affranchie. La date limite de réception des projets est le 30 juin 2011.

langage plastique/ visual language L’art actuel montre un retour très marqué pour les arts dits plastiques. Pensons entre autres à des artistes comme Valérie Blass, Kim Dorland, David Altmejd, Allison Schulnik qui jouent sans retenue sur une célébration de la matière et de la forme. Langage plastique propose de réfléchir l’art davantage à partir de son expérience sensible plutôt que symbolique. S’adresse à nous de cette façon la matière et la couleur de la peinture ou de la sculpture, les vibrations des ondes sonores de la musique, la voix du poète, le geste du performeur, ou comme disait Barthes, l’accent du parlé s’exprimant indépendamment des mots. La question soulevée s’ouvre sur plusieurs approches, soit historique, philosophique, théorique, biographique, sociologique, de même que visuelle. Nous proposons d’explorer ce langage qui s’appréhende à partir de l’expérience de « l’ici et maintenant » de l’œuvre. Cette logique sensible, nous l’appellerons langage plastique. La revue Inter, art actuel fait aussi appel aux artistes pour des doubles pages visuelles, tout en couleur, afin de stimuler la création à partir de cette problématique. Les pages visuelles (300 dpi, format JPEG ou TIFF, minimum 46 x 30 cm) doivent être acheminées à la revue par courriel (redaction [arobas] inter-lelieu [point] org <mailto:redaction [arobas] inter-lelieu [point] org> ) ou sur cd. La Galerie Verticale lance un appel de candidature aux commissaires d’expositions afin de souligner le 25e anniversaire de l’organisme fondateur, la Société des arts visuels de Laval. Dans l’intention de varier sa formule de diffusion, la Galerie Verticale se tourne d’emblée vers l’exploration et la diversification des modes de diffusions des œuvres et des interventions artistiques hors murs. Ceci nous donnera l’occasion d’utiliser le potentiel de l’environnement urbain et naturel qui servira de matière première aux commissaires et artistes invités. On the unfamiliar beauty of solitude
For the second time, Vtape’s award-winning Curatorial Incubator™ invites applications from emerging curators who want to delve deeply into the work of a single video artist. Last year we worked with Vancouver-based emerging curator Allison Collins who put together an exhibition of the work of Susan Britton – work which had been out of distribution and thus out of the public eye for over 15 years. This highly successful exhibition, complete with a handsome monograph, has just begun to tour to other venues in Canada so we consider this to be a very effective strategy.
PLEASE READ SUBMISSION GUIDELINES (below) CAREFULLY.
The successful applicant will hone curatorial skills in the media arts through workshops, independent research and writing, culminating in a public presentation of their selected programme, accompanied by a fully illustrated publication that takes the form a major (5000 word) monograph on the work of the selected artist.

GOING SOLO: On the unfamiliar beauty of solitude is an exciting opportunity for an emerging curator to work directly with an artist, looking at their complete body of work and respond in a variety of possible ways:

>by selecting works that cohere a (seemingly) eclectic practice;
>by selecting works that focus attention onto an (as yet) little known or under-appreciated artist
TIMELINE
Research phase (July – August 2011) includes:
*workshops conducted by established curators, artists and arts professionals specializing in media arts,
*free access to the vast research facilities on site at Vtape, with over 4000 tapes by 800+ artists and over 2000 articles on video art, and
*practical instruction from various Vtape professional staff to assist in producing a media arts exhibition.
Presentation phase (January – February 2012) includes:
*an exhibition of all the curated programmes with an introduction by the curator, and, when possible, a public discussion with the artist present

Call for Submissions: Artist Projects
Struts Gallery & Faucet Media Arts Centre is seeking proposals from local and regional
artists for the Ok.Quoi?! Contemporary Arts Festival, July 25th-31st, 2011.
The Ok.Quoi?! mandate is to showcase contemporary art that exists outside of the gallery
walls and is accessible to the public. The festival will support works that are media based,
whether on the radio, web-based, electronic, video, film, projection. Projects with an
intermedia basis will also be considered. This includes, but is not limited to, performance,
grilled cheese sandwich, intervention, offsite-installations, audio-walks, workshops and
lectures, ephemeral and time-based works.
Here are some ideas that we’ve thought about but we are open to projects that push the
boundaries of our guidelines so please feel free to test us. Bring us your best.
Radio Art?!

Contemporary Arts Festival, July 25th-31st, 2011. Our Video Drive-In is a free public outdoor screening of contemporary film and video.

2012 Guest Artist Series
Art City invites local, national, and international artists to submit proposals to lead workshop-based art projects at our studio in 2012.
Art City is located in West Broadway, a culturally diverse and densely populated neighbourhood in the heart of Winnipeg’s inner city. Art City is open free-of-charge and drop-in to anyone who would like to take part, engaging an average of 25 participants per evening. The majority of those who come to Art City are youth between the ages of 6 and 13 years. Older youth, adults, and seniors also regularly participate in Art City programs.
Selected guest artists will be supported in developing, managing, and facilitating their projects by a team of experienced Art City staff and volunteers. The standard guest artist format is a 5-day period, Monday to Friday, 3:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Artists will receive $1,400.00 for the one-week project. Travel and accommodation for selected visiting artists will be provided by Art City.
In addition to this format, Art City also invites proposals presenting alternative community art projects and formats to be included in our 2012 Guest Artist Series.

Proposal Details and Requirements
Selection criteria for Art City Guest Artist Series proposals:
• Demonstrated professional art practice
• Demonstrated understanding of urban and/or cultural issues pertaining to our community
• Experience and willingness in working with participants of all abilities and ages, particularly youth
• Creativity of project
• Applicability and thoroughness of project outline
• Content appropriateness for a youth audience
• Art media appropriate to Art City and a youth audience (cost, toxicity, ability to instruct, avoiding excess duplication of particular media in calendar year)
• Interest in involving new and diverse artists with the Art City community
Art City participants enjoy the projects best when…
• There is an interesting explanation of the activity they are going to engage in.
• The explanation makes sense for youth of all ages, is simple, uses examples, and is continued as they arrive throughout the evening (with the assistance of Art City staff and volunteers!)
• When they learn something new
• When they make something they can use and/or play with
• When they can take something home to share with their friends and family
• When they are able to participate in collaborative projects, especially through working on individual or small group components that can be brought together to create larger pieces
• Activities are culturally relevant to their own lives
All submissions must include the following:
• Your name, address, e-mail and phone number.
• A one page letter of interest, describing:
– How your workshop concept will facilitate a meaningful artistic exchange between you and members of the West Broadway community?
– How do you expect this collaboration to benefit/impact you as an artist?
• Title and brief description of the workshop.
• A 5-day workshop outline describing each daily 4-hour session. (Or alternative timeline)
• An itemized materials list
• A brief biography summarizing professional achievements. (1 paragraph)
• CV including professional activity and past community engagement. (3 pgs max) ‘

Prefix Institute of Contemporary Art is seeking submissions from photo, film, video and digital artists at all stages of their careers for feature coverage in an upcoming issue of Prefix Photo magazine. To be considered for inclusion, an artist must be a current resident of Manitoba, Saskatchewan or Alberta, or a native of the Canadian Prairies residing elsewhere. Consideration will also be given to any artist whose work explicitly addresses the subject of the Prairies.
Submissions should consist of visual documentation of the work, an artist’s statement or written description of the work, and a curriculum vitae or biography of the artist. Visual documentation may include up to twenty images, preferably submitted as digital files according to the specifications below or, alternatively, as transparencies, work prints or laser prints. Film, video or digital work may be submitted on DVD only, with a selection of related stills. All images must be accompanied by a numbered list including the artist’s name, title, year, medium and dimensions. Submissions may be made by e-mail or by mail. Support materials will not be returned unless accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope. Please do not submit original artwork
With respect to the submission of digital images, please submit files in RGB format at a maximum of 72 dpi, 1024 x 768 pixels and 500K. Please identify each digital image by number (according to your image list) and by name.

TSV Call for Submissions: RIGHT

Trinity Square Video announces a call for submission to RIGHT, the second act of the TSV Commission trilogy, LEFT, RIGHT, CENTER. This commission asks artists to create 5- to 7-minute videos using appropriated writing as a primary source material for the examination of contemporary politics. Celebrating TSV’s 40-year history as a centre for the production of art, we are looking for five successful proposals to RIGHT.
Videomakers chosen for RIGHT must begin their projects from appropriated written source materials. These written sources must be described in the project proposal.
For RIGHT, we are seeking proposals for the creation of work that considers the idea of the “right” from various positions: from those conservative traditionalists whose sober world-view demands moderation and caution; from those even righter Republicans set against collectivism; from the correct and proper, and those who question of their validity; from the lawfully just or the fair who declare civil or human rights on a surface; from the marks, cursive figures or typographic signs that “write” and transform.
This is a commission for the production of video art. TSV is seeking submissions that propose to explore pertinent issues related, but not limited, to representation, identity, geography and space, economics, justice, divisions of labour and power, science, history and philosophy. These works can be impassioned, critical, humorously self-effacing, discursively political or more experimentally ambiguous in their analysis and construction.
Proposed artworks can employ video through a variety of strategies, including narrative and documentary form, formalist or materialist practices, animation or compositing, non-lens-based video production and motion graphics, and through a limited number of selected video installations*.
Selected artists receive:
- $750 in production equipment rentals;
- 40 hours of editing time;
- TSV Final Cut Pro or After Effects workshop;
- Support from TSV’s technical and artistic Staff;
- TSV membership or renewal;
- $400 Honorarium;
- Public screening/exhibition (November 2011);
- Inclusion in the LEFT, RIGHT, CENTER catalogue (published at the completion of the trilogy)
While each project is created separately, the artists participate in group-critiques of works-in-progress, where they can receive peer-support and feedback.
Submissions will be reviewed by the TSV Programming Committee who will make selections based on the proposed project’s exploration of the theme, RIGHT, as well as its intended examination, experimentation and expansion of video as an art medium.
All Toronto-based emerging, mid-career and established visual artists, video artists, media artists, and filmmakers are welcome to submit proposals to RIGHT. Proposals from those living outside Toronto and surrounding area must ensure that the artist will attend all RIGHT related activities at their own expense.
*Up to 2 video installations will be presented as part of RIGHT. The majority of successful applications supported by this commission will be for the creation single-channel videos. Selected artists working in single-channel video or video installation will receive the same resources from TSV, as outlined above.

The Print Studio Artist Residency Program

The Print Studio is now accepting applications for its 2011/2012 Artist Residency program. Designed to encourage production and experimentation in traditional print (relief, lithography, etching, silkscreening and digital) and/or new media practices, TPS’ self-directed residencies are open to both print-based and non-print artists. Technicians are available to assist those unfamiliar with print and/or new media practices.
Applications should include the following:
• A non-refundable $25.00 application fee
• An artist statement/proposal outlining the body of work that the applicant wishes to embark on during the residency
• A CD of 10 – 20 images of recent work
• An image list
• Two letters of reference

Submission proposals should include the preferred dates and length for residencies, as well as the medium that the applicant wishes to work in and should state whether or not the applicant can work independently. Residencies can run for a two-week minimum but can extend up to three months in length. Une première « cartographie de la recherche » retrace les forces et faiblesses dans la compréhension du secteur des arts visuels au Canada
Ottawa, 15 juin 2011 – L’Alliance pour les arts visuels est heureuse d’annoncer la publication d’une nouvelle étude: « Le secteur des arts visuels au Canada : Synthèse et analyse de la documentation récente ».
Commandée par l’Alliance pour les arts visuels, l’étude a été dirigée par le professeur Guy Bellavance de l’Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS), Centre – Urbanisation Culture Société, Montréal. Elle fait un survol de plus de 550 études canadiennes et 315 autres produites à l’étranger identifiant les lacunes majeures dans la recherche récente disponible en arts visuels; elle propose aussi des stratégies pour remédier à ces lacunes.
Parmi les principales conclusions de l’étude, on note que la contribution du secteur des arts visuels à la culture canadienne est économiquement sous-évaluée, en raison principalement d’un manque d’études sur les systèmes d’éducation en art; que la recherche est lacunaire dans plusieurs domaines puisque les universités accordent la priorité à l’étude de l’histoire de l’art plutôt qu’aux dimensions organisationnelles du secteur des arts visuels; qu’il y a encore beaucoup à faire au palier provincial pour aborder les spécificités régionales; et que des cinq sous-secteurs étudiés, le moins connu est le marché de l’art – comment l’art rejoint son public.
L’étude a été réalisée grâce à une contribution du Conseil des Arts du Canada. Le rapport de recherche et un sommaire sont disponibles dans les deux langues officielles sur le site de l’Alliance pour les arts visuels www.visualartsvisuels.ca .
L’Alliance est un regroupement d’organismes nationaux en arts visuels, en arts médiatiques et en métiers d’art formé d’artistes, de musées d’art, de centres d’artistes, de professionnels des arts et de marchands d’art au Canada, rassemblés par le Sommet des arts visuels en novembre 2007.
