Confederation Centre Art Gallery seeks submissions from Canadian artists for permanent outdoor sculpture
The Confederation Centre Art Gallery (CCAG) is seeking preliminary proposal submissions from Canadian artists for a landmark permanent outdoor artwork to be installed on the plaza of the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown, P.E.I. The work, to be completed and unveiled by July 2014, will commemorate the Confederation Centre’s 50th anniversary. The work should respond to the Centre’s mandate to celebrate the evolution of the country and to inspire through the visual arts, an appreciation, understanding, and enjoyment of Canada’s diverse cultural heritage through an enhancement of the Centre’s public space. The selected work would update and complement existing outdoor sculptures and architecture. This is a major, national-level commission, with projects able to draw upon a commission budget of up to $200,000 for artist fees, fabrication, engineering consultation, shipping, and installation expenses. Preliminary proposal submissions are due July 15, 2012.
Selection will be determined through a two-tier process. An advisory council with national representation will select a shortlist of approximately five proposals in August 2012. Shortlisted artists will be asked to provide further elaboration of proposals, as well as models, by October 2012. Shortlisted proposals will be exhibited in December 2012. Public input, final selection and budget approval will follow early in 2013.
About the Confederation Centre of the Arts:
Confederation Centre of the Arts was founded in 1964 as Canada’s National Memorial to the Fathers of Confederation, who gathered at Province House in 1864 to discuss the creation of our country.
Every Canadian played a part in the establishment of the Centre: each province and the federal government committed 15 cents per capita for a total of $5.6-million to construct the huge building. This was the first time that all provinces agreed to give money for an institution outside their boundaries.
Covering an entire city block, the Centre stands on what was the site of the old Charlottetown marketplace. It houses several theatres, an art gallery, restaurant, and a gift shop. Open year-round, it showcases the best in Canadian visual and performing arts.
Confederation Centre is the result of a dream shared by all Canadians – to create a place where our country’s history and multicultural character is celebrated, and where the talents of its people are nurtured and showcased.
Submission Requirements
Eligibility
•    The 2014 Confederation Centre of the Arts 50th Anniversary Public Sculpture Commission is open to Canadian artists. To be eligible, artists must be Canadian citizens or have permanent residency status in Canada.
•    Only artists with a record of experience in the creation of permanent public art will be considered for the commission.
Requirements
•    Proposals must be for permanent works that will take into account seasonal conditions and be viewable for the whole year.
•    They must also be accessible at all times of the day. Lighting and durability must therefore be considerations for all submissions.
•    Proposals should present limited ongoing costs and maintenance requirements.
•    Successful proposals need not necessarily be monumental in scale, but should have a significant visual impact on the environment of the Confederation Centre plaza and architecture.
•    Proposals should respond to the Confederation Centre’s mandate, representing excellence in Canadian contemporary art, as well as its existing architectural and sculptural context. They should also consider the thematics around the Centre’s role as a national cultural centre and monument to Canadian confederation.
•    Preference will be given to new works that respond to the specifics of the commission.
•    Proposals must ultimately meet safety standards, electrical codes and other reasonable feasibility requirements for acceptance.
Proposal Package and Submission Details
All materials must be received by mail, postmarked by July 15, 2012.
Please provide:
-Drawings/images (maximum 5 pages) showing components of the work proposed, and how and where it will be placed on the Confederation Centre plaza.
-A written statement about the proposal (theme, fabrication and process details, relationship to artist’s practice, to site, etc.), maximum one page.
-A proposed budget.
-Annotated images sent on a CD or DVD (maximum 20 images), identifying materials, dimensions, year, and brief description (maximum 100 words per work described).

Labspace Studio and Art 4 Commuters presents Confessions
Underground…

date limite 1er juillet 2012

Part social experiment, part public intervention, Confessions
Underground is a video based art project that gives willing
participants the rare opportunity to record a private on-camera
confession and broadcast it publicly over 300 of Toronto’s
digital subway platform screens.

>From July 2nd – July 15th, video confessions will be screened
daily throughout Toronto’s underground subway system,
intersecting with the daily comings-and-goings of commuter
traffic.

Sound terrifying? Yes, probably. But who knows? It could also
be exhilarating, cathartic, perhaps even liberating.

With access to over 1-million daily subway commuters,
confessors take on the potential “risk” of being recognized by
passerby. While names will NOT be disclosed on screen, visual
identities will. And that’s the exciting part; the risky part; the real
challenge. Maybe you want that ONE person to discover that
ONE secret you’ve been hiding from them for years? Or maybe
you just want the chance to finally share your secret with others?
Either way, the platform is yours….

At its core, this project attempts to exmaine the “collective” act
of confessing by exploring some deeply rooted questions: What
if we could confess our secrets on a mass-scale? What if we
could confess with the support of a large group? Would that
make it easier for us to come clean? Would we even want to?

Currently we’re seeking brave collaborators willing to offer us
their confessions for public consumption. If you’re interested in
this project (or would like to know more), please visit
http://confessionsunderground.com.

Confessions Underground is a Labspace Studio project,
produced in association with PattisonOneStop & Art 4

APPEL: palimpsest PLATFORM: Call to Filmmakers & Video Artists

PLATFORM announces a call for submissions for film + video in response to the theme of the palimpsest. A screening will be presented in conjunction with PLATFORM’s palimpsest year and will take place in the Artspace Building.

Taking our cue from the historical phenomenon of the palimpsest as a scroll or text that is written only to be erased in order to make room for the inscription of new ideas, PLATFORM is currently in a year-long investigation into how photography and its sister media, film and video, can act as contemporary palimpsests or re-writable texts. Winnipeg is a prairie city where you can see a snowstorm coming three days away. The flatness of our location holds with the possibility that we take in not only the periphery but also the past and future. palimpsest, should not be mistaken as a sentimental elucidation about the past. It explores a rhizomatic vision of past, present, and future in various simultaneous possibilities.

A Digital Stitch in Time

Deadline: July 1, 2012 (EMAIL)

Call for Submissions
A Digital Stitch in Time
Alexia Mellor, Artist

Calling all artists whose practices are at the intersection of art, craft and digital technologies to be considered for inclusion in a forthcoming article about artist projects employing needlecraft techniques to translate, redefine and recontextualize images and lexicon sourced from digital and virtual culture.

No longer reserved for our grandmothers, needlecraft has become a subversive tool of counter-culture, interrogating knowledge and meaning, while encouraging an intimate participation with the digital through a laborious, and social process. Whether it is revealing the underlying relationship between computer coding and embroidery patterns, or documenting the digital landscape through a portrait of cotton cross-stitches, we consider the meaning of “social networks” and participatory production as artists explore collective meaning and ownership in the digital age.

If you are interested in having your work considered for inclusion in the article, please email an artist statement, CV and link to images of your work to: digitalstitching [arobas] gmail [point] com

Michelangelo Pistoletto
The Third Paradise
21 December 2012

www.rebirth-day.orgwww.cittadellarte.it
rebirth-day [arobas] cittadellarte [point] it
Rebirth-Day: the first worldwide day of rebirth
A great celebration throughout the world—a vital, living, breathing symbol of a new beginning.

December 21st, the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere and the summer soltice in the Southern, is a day celebrated by mankind since time immemorial.

A fateful “end of the world” connotation, as widespread as it is unfounded, has been attributed to this day in 2012, proposing a theme that is recurrent in mythologies and religions as well as in the literature of fantasy and science fiction.

All imaginative factors aside, this date can take on a symbolic meaning, as it effectively corresponds to a climactic phase of human history. We are progressing steadily toward an inevitable collapse—the science is there to prove it.

The whole of human society is now in the reckoning and so must face a historic transition, a complete change.

Humanity has gone through two paradises. The first, in which it integrated fully with nature; the second, in which it expanded into an artificial world of its own, which grew until it came into conflict with the natural world. It is time to begin the third stage, in which humanity will reconcile and unite nature and artifice, creating a new balance at every level and in every area of society: “an evolutionary step in which the human intelligence finds ways to live in harmony with the intelligence of nature” (Michelangelo Pistoletto).

A new perspective opens up that involves everyone, without exception, in the daily effort to implement the process of rebirth—each according to his or her abilities and possibilities.

On 21 December 2012, let us meet in streets and squares all over the world, and on the Web, to take part in the great inaugural celebration of the Third Paradise.

Participation in the Rebirth-day represents a personal commitment to the process of change.

Let’s take this extraordinary opportunity to joyfully and eagerly create our future destiny together. Let’s participate, on this day, with whatever form of expression we choose (performance, music, sound, installations, images…) in a great common artwork.

The actions, activities, and interventions oriented toward rebirth will be carried out throughout 2012, on the celebration day, 21 December, and in 2013 as well.

The Third Paradise is a secular undertaking and is not associated with any religious denomination.

How to participate:
•    The first form of participation is to talk up the initiative: tell your friends and acquaintances about it.
•    Undertake actions, activities, and interventions inspired by rebirth—starting, for instance, from the sign/symbol of the Third Paradise, which can be presented in different forms in different languages and materials.
•    Share your actions, activities, and interventions on Youtube, Facebook, and Flickr.
•    Join right now in the rebirth with a little exercise in renunciation—a renunciation not imposed by religious precepts, but taken up as a free choice that strengthens personal awareness. Global change is an outcome of individual energies. Announce what you renounce on the site, www.rebirth-day.org.
•    A selection of the materials published on the web will be presented at the exhibition, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Année un – le paradis sur terre (Michelangelo Pistoletto, Year One – Paradise on Earth), to be held at the Louvre, Paris, in spring 2013.

Atelier Topaz – résidence
Opasatika, Ontario, Canada

On-going Light- Work Int’l Artist-In-Residence Program, photography & digital media

Each year Light Work invites 12-15 artists to participate in its residency program, including one artist co-sponsored by Autograph ABP. Artists selected for the residency program are invited to live in Syracuse for one month. They receive a $4,000 stipend, an apartment to stay in, a private digital studio, a private darkroom, and 24-hour access to our facility.

Participants in the residency program are expected to use their month to pursue their own projects: photographing in the area, printing for a specific project or book, and so on. Artists are not obligated to teach at our facility, though we hope that the artists are friendly and accessible to local artists. Work produced by the Artists-in-Residence will also be published in Light Work’s publication Contact Sheet.

Our color-managed digital imaging lab features Macintosh workstations equipped with flatbed and film scanners. Output options include Epson 9900, 9800, and 4880 printers that can render continuous gray-scale and color prints onto a broad variety of materials. Artists use Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Macromedia Director Studio, Flash, Dreamweaver, Adobe Premiere, DVD Studio Pro software packages, iLife, and more programs. In addition, our traditional lab facility can accommodate just about any black and white process from alternative processes to mural printing.

Light Work supports artists working in photography and related media. Through our partnership with the Urban Video Project, we can also provide some direct support to video artists.

Artists should submit the following:

Renouvellement de la Feuille de route pour la dualité linguistique au Canada

Le 22 mai, le gouvernement du Canada a formellement annoncé la tenue d’une consultation pancanadienne sur les langues officielles. Cette consultation vise notamment à sonder la population sur le renouvellement de la Feuille de route pour la dualité linguistique, une vaste initiative gouvernementale qui arrive à terme le 31 mars 2013.

http://www.pch.gc.ca/fra/1337699948163
