Le Programme d’art public de la Ville d’Ottawa lance un appel de candidatures :

GALERIE KARSH-MASSON ET GALERIE D’ART DE L’HÔTEL DE VILLE
SAISON DES EXPOSITIONS DE 2012

Dans le cadre du Programme d’art public, la Ville d’Ottawa administre deux galeries professionnelles : la Galerie Karsh-Masson et la Galerie d’art de l’hôtel de ville. Des œuvres d’art contemporaines, dans tous les styles et toutes les formes, y sont exposées dans le but de promouvoir les arts visuels à Ottawa.

Chaque année, un jury composé d’artistes professionnels et de spécialistes de la région passe en revue et choisit les expositions. Tous les efforts sont déployés pour que les membres du jury soient représentatifs de la gamme de soumissions reçues chaque année.

Le jury évalue les candidatures selon les critères suivants : mérite artistique, professionnalisme et cohérence des œuvres présentées dans le cadre de l’exposition; qualité de la proposition écrite; pertinence en regard du mandat des galeries; et à-propos de l’exposition compte tenu de la nature publique des galeries. Les candidatures reçues sont automatiquement prises en compte pour les deux galeries. Une seule proposition d’exposition par requérant sera évaluée par le jury.

ADMISSIBILITÉ

Cet appel de candidatures s’adresse aux artistes professionnels, aux collectifs d’artistes et aux collectionneurs d’œuvres d’art. L’exposition présentera les œuvres d’artistes qui répondent à l’un ou l’autre des critères suivants :

• Artistes émergents, en milieu de carrière ou reconnus;

• Artistes sourds ou atteints d’un handicap, autochtones, francophones et/ou provenant d’autres cultures;

• Artistes travaillant dans les secteurs des beaux-arts, de l’artisanat, du design et autres nouvelles formes de création artistique;

• Artistes de la région, du pays et de l’étranger. La priorité est accordée aux candidats qui vivent ou qui ont déjà vécu dans un rayon de 150 km de la ville d’Ottawa; nous encourageons cependant les artistes résidant à l’extérieur de la région d’Ottawa à poser leur candidature;

• Citoyens canadiens ou résidents permanents.

EXPOSITIONS ADMISSIBLES
• Exposition solo, en duo ou en groupe;
• Expositions itinérantes et expositions organisées par d’autres établissements;
• Expositions provenant d’universités locales et du milieu diplomatique;
• Œuvres provenant de la collection d’œuvres d’art ainsi que des collections des archives et du patrimoine de la Ville.

La Galerie Verticale lance un appel de candidature aux commissaires d’expositions afin de souligner le 25e anniversaire de l’organisme fondateur, la Société des arts visuels de Laval. Dans l’intention de varier sa formule de diffusion, la Galerie Verticale se tourne d’emblée vers l’exploration et la diversification des modes de diffusions des œuvres et des interventions artistiques hors murs. Ceci nous donnera l’occasion d’utiliser le potentiel de l’environnement urbain et naturel qui servira de matière première aux commissaires et artistes invités. Souhaitant nous rapprocher de la communauté lavalloise, nous élaborons donc une programmation se rapportant à notre réalité.

Nous souhaitons présenter des artistes, architectes, designers ou tous autres créateurs qui inscriront dans la ville toutes formes d’interventions artistiques qui sauront révéler de nouvelles expériences esthétiques au public rendant compte de la permanence et du mouvement, de l’ordre et du désordre de la ville.

NATURE DES PROJETS RECHERCHES :

•    Installations  monumentales
•    Projets déambulatoires et parcours artistiques
•    Installations / architectures éphémères, interactives
•    Projet artistique faisant intervenir le végétal
•    Design sonore d’espaces publics, d’infrastructures, de bâtiments

MANDAT DES COMMISSAIRES :

•    Proposer un projet répondant à la direction artistique décrite mentionnée ci-haut.
•    Réaliser une sélection d’artistes et des oeuvres
•    Établir le premier contact avec les artistes et les auteurs et obtenir leur accord (le centre prendra ensuite le relais pour les étapes subséquentes
•    Rédiger un texte pour publication accompagnant le projet
•    apporter son soutien à l’équipe de la Galerie Verticale pour la rédaction des demandes de subventions et des communiqués de presse;
•    être présent pour le vernissage et disponible pour d’éventuelles présences médiatiques.

APPEL AUX ARTISTES DE TOUT LE PAYS QUI SE SERVENT DE LA PHOTOGRAPHIE
DANS LEUR PROCESSUS CRÉATIF EN ART ACTUEL.
Double défi:
1- Montrer l’invisible en se servant de la photographie
2- Utiliser un processus ancien, le sténopé, adapté à la technologie
moderne, un appareil numérique à objectif interchangeable. (Il n’y a
qu’à enlever l’objectif et le remplacer par un carton noir ou le
bouchon, percé d’un petit trou. Le temps -de pose- fera le reste!)
Laissez entrer un peu de vie dans l’image par le sténopé. Quand la
profondeur de champ est augmentée par la longueur de temps
d’exposition, la magie peut mieux opérer. Seule la photographie peut
révéler l’inconscient de l’œil. Vous prenez une photo et puis, c’est
la photo qui vous prend. Cette valeur ajoutée que Barthes nommait
punctum, c’est en négligeant un instant la raison qu’elle peut surgir.
Le hasard s’approche quand le contrôle nous échappe…

New! Artist Residency At MAWA
Two deadlines: April 29, 2011 (for residencies in 2011) and October 28, 2011 (for residencies in 2012) MAWA is offering our urban, loft-style apartment to women visual artists for residencies of 2-4 weeks in duration. Applicants can use this space and time for research, reflection, networking and/or production. We will provide free accommodation and a $300 honorarium.
The MAWA apartment is fully furnished and includes a kitchen, a bathroom with shower, a double bed, a double futon/couch, and a designated parking space. All linens and cooking utensils are provided. The apartment is located on the second floor of 611 Main Street in downtown Winnipeg. Sadly, it is a walk-up and is not wheelchair accessible. info [arobas] mawa [point] ca
MAWA’s apartment is a clean space that is not conducive for painting and many forms of sculpture. However, we will work with you and other Winnipeg art centres to help you gain access to the facilities and resources you need. These could include a rough studio, printmaking, video and darkroom facilities, or introductions to likeminded artists and curators.
While at MAWA, we ask that you present your work to our members in a form of your choice (screening, talk, performance, showcase of work-in-progress, etc.). Artists at all stages of their careers are encouraged to apply. Equal consideration will be given to emerging and established artists. Rural Manitoba artists are especially encouraged. Imagine an urban retreat!
Applications must be received by April 29 and October 28 at 4 pm, and should include:
-a cover letter saying why you would like time in the MAWA apartment (goals, rationale)
-a detailed description of what you will need while you are here (access to other facilities or equipment requested)
-first choice of preferred dates; second choice of preferred dates (including start and end dates)

Call for Submissions
ARTSPACE Peterborough is seeking proposals from visual and new media artists for its 2012/13 programming. 
 
DEADLINE:

ARTSPACE is dedicated to exhibiting Canadian Contemporary artists working in a variety of disciplines. We strive to present art that reflects and promotes the diversity of cultural and political perspectives, which shape contemporary art practices. Emerging, mid-career and senior artists whose works are alternative, experimental and/or critically engaged are presented. ARTSPACE receives a high volume of submissions. Before submitting, please look at past exhibitions and projects at ARTSPACE to decide if your work fits the gallery mandate.
 
With multiple exhibition spaces available, we invite artists to apply in the following categories:
 
MAIN GALLERY: designed for the presentation of solo and group shows.  We invite artists, collectives and curators to apply with new or existing exhibition proposals. Video installations will not be considered for the Main Gallery given the natural light in the space from full exposure windows.
 
MUDROOM: a black-box gallery designated for the presentation of short-term, experimental projects predominantly by local and regional artists, as well as presentation of video installations and single channel works.
 
PROJECT ROOM: accommodates small and individual pieces that require an intimate and dark space.
 
PERFORMANCE/RESIDENCY: We are seeking proposals for original performance pieces. We are also interested in works that are participatory in nature and fall under the category of relational aesthetics. In addition, we invite artists to consider doing workshops and lectures during their stay in an effort to engage local artists in research and production. Duration of residency may vary depending on the nature of work and research.

ARTSPACE asks that all proposals be submitted electronically on CD or DVD. Disks should be clearly labeled by artist name and must be readable on MAC OSX. Please save supporting documents as individually labeled pdfs (CV.pdf, Proposal.pdf, StatementandBio.pdf etc.).

VISUALEYEZ Canada’s Annual Performance Art Festival

The twelfth annual Visualeyez festival of performance art is happens from 13 -18 September 2011 in the downtown core of Edmonton, Alberta, exploring on the curatorial theme of worship.

Visualeyez takes place over a period of six days and it is required that all invited artists are able to attend for the entire length of the festival. Artists experience the work of other artists; engage in discussion groups, meals and other activities that enhance the work of individual artists and the performance art community within Canada and beyond. Curator and Founder of Visualeyez, Todd Janes states, “Visualeyez 2011 takes a rather different focus, and I am curious how artists are engaging in discourses surrounding worshipping; or executing issues of devotion, contemplation and adoration as a key element in their practices and performances. I am not just curious about spiritual but also commoditization and extremes like obsessions”.

Proposals should include: a CV; artist statement; a detailed description of the work you wish to present, or explore; and support material that can include slides, video, print or digital documentation of your work, catalogues, and press.

The deadline for submission is Friday, 20 May 2011.
If you would like your materials returned to you, please also include sufficient postage or courier materials. Artists shall be contacted by mid-June 2011 regarding the status of their proposals.

Moberly Arts & Cultural Centre is a Park Board facility at which The
Incubator will be hosted.   This up to three-year pilot residency will
provide free studio space for an artist or artist team in exchange for
community-based arts engagement. The call is open to artists working in
all disciplines (dance, theatre, visual arts, new media, etc.).  Our
goal is to create a stronger identity for Moberly as a unique cultural
space, to nurture the role of the artist, and to explore the potential
of community arts engagement by having an onsite studio residency.

1. Open Spaces Gallery Call 4 Submissions from Wednesday March 2nd 2011.  Wednesday March 2nd was the first day for the opening of the Open Spaces Gallery. The Open Spaces Gallery is a progressive project that rents an hour from the parking meter outside of OCAD at 100 McCaul Street. The concept is that a space of available land is rented by Open Spaces Gallery to make visible the celebration and practice of First Nation culture by First Nation people  or artists. As an open space, the public is invited to learn about First Nation culture from the performances on Wednesdays. I am wearing a Call 4 Submissions poncho because there is space available for interested First Nation individuals to share experiences living in contemporary society. This project will add visibilty to First Nation culture. 2.  Iroquois Confederacy Flag from Wednesday March 9th 2011.  Wednesday March 9th was the second day for the opening of the Open Spaces Gallery by again buying an hour from the parking meter outside of OCAD at 100 McCaul Street. As a measure of identifying the Open Spaces Gallery as a safe territory for the expression of First Nation culture, the plan for the day was to design a territorial flag. Also, as a measure of creativity, my friend Morena and I represented a broken baby stroller as an Iroquois Confederacy Flag which marks the 6 nations of the Ontario and New York State area. Also, the transformation of a Western conceptual device (babystroller) into a representation of a First Nation territory parallels the project’s role in transforming an identifiable parking space into an expression of First Nation culture. I am excited for this Wednesday March 16th as a group of 5 OCAD students and faculty will celebrate the traditional making of craft through a cultural performance of a pow-wow. 3. Wednesday March 16, 2011. Third day of the Open Spaces Gallery being opened includes a guest Ojibway artist and educator named Bonnie. Bonnie is helping Morena and Joel add some much needed beadwork to the territorial flag. With a larger group practicing First Nation culture, we seem to be getting less interruptions from vehicles wishing to take away from the Open Spaces Gallery. Today was a milestone for the Open Spaces Gallery as the first guest artist came to share in an expression of First Nation culture. I hope that we will continue to decorate the territorial marker and I am imagining that passerbys will start to take part in its decoration.
4. On Wednesday April 6 2011 Open Spaces Gallery used the rented parking space to include 3 paintings, 2 sculptures and 2 encaustic works. This exhibit was associated with a planned OCAD Student show at the gallery. Though I am really enjoying decorating the territorial marker, I am exploring using the Open Spaces Gallery for other forms of visual art works. I have now received three submissions and future exhibitions may include; sculpture, paintings and performance. 5. This Wednesday April 13 2011 the Open Spaces Gallery will welcome Janus, a local sculptor from Markham. Janus is very interested in using small and lifesize sculptures to explore the Open Spaces concept of land reclamation; to transform rented parking space into a artistic venue. Janus has created a public performance and song to celebrate an understanding with First Nation culture and land marginalization. I am very excited to welcome a practicing artist to the Open Spaces Gallery. Interest in viewing the sculpture and performance has been shown by Structure and Form students from OCAD and I look forward to creating a dialogue between Janus and emerging young artists from OCAD, should be interesting.

Modern Fuel is currently seeking submissions for exhibitions of innovative, contemporary artwork in any visual media for its 2012-2013 programming season. Emerging artists are welcome. Artist fees are paid. Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre facilitates the presentation, interpretation, and production of visual and time-based arts that explore wide-ranging aesthetics and probe a broad scope of formal and socio-cultural questions. CALGARY GALLERY ART CALL: Call for Submissions – TRUCK Gallery
+15 Window Space Special Call – Return to the Dollhouse
Deadline: May 1, 2011 
In 2009 TRUCK Contemporary Art in Calgary presented Welcome to the Dollhouse, an exhibition of miniature works displayed in a curio cabinet style dollhouse. This year, TRUCK will revisit the miniature with Return to the Dollhouse, inviting artists to create small-scale installations that will be viewable from a single “peephole”. Curiosity will entice the viewer’s to gaze into the wonder and mystery that lay behind the closed doors of the dollhouse. 
Return to the Dollhouse will take place during August and September of 2011. Each artist will be given a 1 x 1 x 1 foot wooden box to create miniature works in.
Your submission should include:
1. Proposal (maximum of 1 page): Clearly describe the proposed work. Provide details about any special requirements, including equipment needs.
2. Artist Statement (maximum of 1 page): Contextualizes the work submitted within your artistic practice.

Room is a space where women can speak, connect, and
showcase their creativity. Each quarter, for 33 issues, Room has
been publishing original, thought-provoking works, by emerging

women¹s strength, sensuality, vulnerability, and wit.

Room¹s 2011 winter issue, 34.4, will focus on Sibling
Relationships. Are the connections between twins different than
that of other siblings? How are relationships with brothers

HOMEWORK: Infrastructures & Collaboration in Social Practices is four-day residency, two-day conference, and collaboratively-written publication aimed at generating a conversation around the possibilities, processes, challenges and ideas concerned with infrastructures, collaboration, and social practices.

Facilitated by Broken City Lab, HOMEWORK calls on artists, scholars, writers, thinkers, and doers interested in any of the above to join us in Windsor, Ontario from October 17 to October 22, 2011.

The Residency: October 17-20, 2011
The four-day residency will be modeled on an evolving, open, and inclusive collaborative process, allowing participating artists to initiate and realize new projects together. Over the course of the residency, artists with a diverse range of practices and skill sets will engage in new collaborative works and processes. Applicants selected to participate in the residency will also be expected to participate in the conference. Artist fees will be paid, however, we cannot billet participating artists.

The Conference: October 21-22, 2011
Following the residency, a two-day conference will feature an ongoing discussion articulating the complexities of collaboration, the ethics of social practice, and the possibilities for art to act as a catalyst for social change. Day One will centre on a series of panel discussions featuring artists who took part in the residency alongside other selected participants, and culminate in a keynote address on alternative art infrastructures and the role of locality in socially-engaged artistic practices. Day Two will expand on the conversation through a series of keynote-led workshops and discussion groups and will begin the process of outlining the collaboratively-written publication.

The Publication: 2011-2012
Following the residency and conference, we will compile notes, sketches, texts, and photos from everyone attending the conference and create a downloadable and print-on-demand book on the entire project called, DOING OUR HOMEWORK: A Book on Infrastructures and Collaboration in Social Practices. The book will be available online as a PDF and as a hardcopy print-on-demand book under the Creative Commons license.

Design Contest for Halifax band Ben Caplan & The Casual
Smokers

An innovative and and unique approach to album art is being
launched. Ben Caplan & The Casual Smokers are working on
their first full length studio album. The working title is Nine Kinds
of Trouble and it’s being released at the end of this summer as a
deluxe gatefold vinyl package. But before the band can send
the record to press, they need the artwork to pour onto the LP
and that’s where their contest comes in.

In concert with the creative firm, Napkin Works, the band is
announcing a contest to find the artist to do their design work.
They are offering the winner $1000 CDN, plus the glory, and a
limited edition coloured vinyl copy of the album. In fact, the top
three artists will all receive a copy of the record, and any artist
who submits work for the contest will receive a free digital
download of the record on the album release date.

Noxious Sector Arts Collective invites submissions for the 2011 WORLD
TELEKINESIS COMPETITION, to be held in Seattle (WA) from June 18 to June 25,
2011. Participation is not geographically dependent — teams may participate
from their home locations, in North America and Internationally.

DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION: MAY 15, 2011

DESCRIPTION
The WORLD TELEKINESIS COMPETITION is a forum for speculative action — an
organized tournament in which teams from around the world engage in psychic
competition to remotely influence the behavior of a candle. Matches are
played by lighting a candle at the centre of the official game board, at an
agreed-upon time, signaling the beginning of the game. A match lasts for one
hour, or until the game candle is extinguished, whichever comes first.
In the event of a tie at the end of one hour, the match goes into sudden
death. The object of the game is to have the wax from the candle drip onto
the opposing team’s side of the game board. This objective is to be
accomplished by remote telekinetic influence.
The winning team will be awarded the World Telekinesis Competition trophy,
which they will get to keep until next year’s competition.

SUBMISSIONS
To qualify for competition, teams must submit the following:

1.    A statement of interest or method;

2.    A list of three (3) members who comprise the team, and a
concise biographical statement for each team member;

3.    A medium-resolution (2MB) image of each team member;

Pixxelpoint is one of the most successful and renowned festivals of new media art in Slovenia and also abroad. Its purpose is firstly, to bring the information technology and new media art closer to the general public, and secondly, to raise awareness about a different potential to use the medium of connection.
Artists and art collectives from all countries working with new media and digital technologies that include work in traditional media as long as it may fit conceptually in the exhibition theme are invited to submit proposals of existing or new projects.
The title of this year’s Pixxelpoint is: Let’s Get Ready.

Objective
Applicants can choose to submit works in the following categories:

The title for the 12th edition of Pixxelpoint 2011 is appropriately enigmatic: LETS GET READY…, merely defines a space of engagement driven forward by a generative force: “to begin again from the beginning” for those who seek what formulates new media art in its fluent transition between the various manifestations, which can take on new meanings in multiple contextual re-configurations no matter what of their materiality or mediality. Especially when considering the articulations from the fundamental/historical register to what this could foster at the intersection of new media art’s “mission, its destiny.”
Beyond what has been stated, it can also be said that one of the characteristics of new media art is potentially generate a critical moments; an instance of that might open up the possibility of thinking the ‘new.’
However, in describing the relation to the new media driven art forms, there is likewise a kernel approach as “new technologies are nothing other than new means to an end.” Then, what does this interpretation cultivate? And, how could this space of engagement be defined within these statement, which at first appear contradictory yet are co-existing and non-separable?
The repercussions of what characterize the generative moment of reconnecting processually with what is produced, with the conditions of emergence of which reveals its transformative capacities as a space for possibilities. This highlights the political and cultural context of contemporary art production in the context of the emergence of micropolitical forces to generate.
This seeks to maintain relational entities in tracing a line through different planes of production and this is the very core of the direction of the 12th edition of Pixxelpoint 2011, linked with the eventualities of implications for the very idea of critical engagement as to create different forms of articulation in relation to new media art.

About the Fall 2011 / Spring 2012 Artist Residency Program
The Watermill Center Residency Program began in 2006, and in five seasons has hosted 72 artist residencies. The Residency Program runs from September to June and gives young artists the opportunity to live and work at The Watermill Center as a home to create and develop new work. Each residency varies in length according to artists’ and project needs, and generally lasts from one to four weeks. A distinguished international selection committee composed of interdisciplinary artists, academics, and cultural leaders (see below) meets in July each year to select the artist groups that will be invited to the residency program.
In addition to creating and developing their own work, artists share their creative process at Watermill with the public through open rehearsals, workshops, and/or artist talks. Through partnership initiatives, some residencies go on to showcase their work in NYC and abroad.

New editor and co – editor at Nordic Tantrum!

Nordic Tantrum – Forum for Nordic Performance art is a website to
inform about Nordic performance art and to function as a resource base
and communication channel for the Nordic visual performance art
community. The generation of texts about different topics and to
continuously update a database about Nordic artists, organizations,
events and opportunities are the main goals of the project.

Nordic Tantrum aims to have rotating editors every second year. For
the past two years Agnes Nedregård has been in charge of the project
and I am excited to announce that from April 1st I take over Nordic
Tantrum as the new editor.

Benedicte Clementsen will be the new co – editor of the project, and
together we are very excited, full of energy and motivation! And since
this is a moment of changes for Nordic Tantrum, this is also the
moment for you to come up with suggestions, ideas and comments about
the website and the project in general. So, feel welcome to write us!!

We hope to keep up the expectations and we are looking forward for

Seacourt Print Workshop, Artist in Residence 2011
As part of an ongoing programme researching non toxic approaches to printmaking we are seeking an artist printmaker with at least 2 years’ professional experience who has worked in one or more of the following techniques: Ferric Chloride etching, copper sulphate etching, water based screen printing, waterless lithography.
Duration:

The residency will last for 12 consecutive weeks (Commencement date negotiable from July the 1st 2011 but the residency must be completed before the 9th December 2011).
Artist Fee: £3,000 sterling

This fee will be divided into three equal instalments paid at the beginning of each month. The residency does not include accommodation or travel expenses. While Seacourt Print Workshop will endeavour to assist the artist in every way to secure affordable accommodation, the selected artist must make their own travel and living arrangements. All expenses incurred are the responsibility of the selected artist.

Responsibilities:

The recipient will provide a talk on their practice to members of Seacourt Print Workshop. The recipient will engage with the local community through a short outreach programme arranged in partnership with North Down Community Network.
The selected artist will not be an employee of the studio or its funding bodies, and any taxes or contributions that may be due from any fees paid are the sole responsibility of the artist.
Recently introduced Border Control legislation may impact on some visitors from outside the EU. Please contact your nearest British Embassy to ascertain what documents you will require if selected to participate in this programme.
All applications and accompanying materials must arrive by 4.00pm Friday 20th May 2011.

Helsinki International Curatorial Programme organised by HIAP – Helsinki International Artist-in-residence Programme and FRAME Finnish Fund for Art Exchange currently offers curatorial residencies in Helsinki for international visual arts curators
The aim of the programme is to provide curators with an opportunity to carry out research on Finnish fine art, to build contacts with Finnish art practitioners and cultural organisations and to develop international curatorial projects involving Finnish participants.
The programme is open to curators worldwide with professional experience in organising visual arts projects.
Curatorial residencies include the cost of travel to and from Helsinki with a grant for living expenses, studio accommodation, residency services and administrative support. Practical assistance for the participant’s curatorial project are provided by HIAP and FRAME. A small public event (e.g. workshop, lecture, open meeting) will also be organised during the residency. The curator will have access to an extensive collection of Finnish artist portfolios at the FRAME office.
The length of the curatorial residency is usually one calendar month.
APPLICATIONS
Applications are accepted throughout the year. The jury reviewing the applications meets at least twice a year. Applications should be sent by November 1st or May 1st to qualify for review at the following meeting.
Applications should include presentation materials of the applicant’s previous projects, a curriculum vitae, a working plan for the residency period and a proposal for a public event to be organised during the residency.
Applications should be submitted by post. Please note that all electronic material should be compatible with Mac computers and readable by common office software. Application materials are not returned.
