City of Toronto
Call to Artists for Expression of Interest (EOI)
Permanent Public Art Work
York Community Recreation Centre at Eglinton Avenue West and Black Creek Drive, Toronto

The City of Toronto’s Public Art Office works with staff across City of Toronto divisions and agencies, boards and commissions to identify exciting new opportunities for commissioning innovative contemporary artworks in the City’s public spaces. The City’s Parks, Forestry & Recreation Division has received approval from City Council to design and build a new community recreation centre in Ward 12, York South-Weston, on land immediately adjacent to the southeast corner of Eglinton Avenue West and Black Creek Drive.
Cultural Services views this large site as an opportunity to commission an artist or artist team to create an outdoor site-specific public art work that will anchor the main pedestrian entrances from Black Creek Drive and Eglinton Avenue West and serve as a focal point for this new community centre.
To be completed in 2012-13 the facility is designed by Perkins + Will Canada and will include a gym, indoor swimming pool and multi-purpose spaces. The project will serve the distinct neighbourhoods of Keelesdale, Weston-Mount Dennis and Rockcliffe and is seen to be pivotal to these surrounding culturally-diverse neighbourhoods of winding cul-de-sac streets, nearby former industrial sites, including the Kodak Lands (Photography Drive), and the verdant ravines of Black Creek, which flows southward along the eastern edge of the site. Landscaped grounds with new additional tree plantings will surround the new facility on all sides.
A specially convened independent Selection Committee made up of practicing arts professionals and community representatives will select the public art concept for this project through a two-stage open competition. The art production budget, including all fees, materials, technologies, fabrication and installation costs, is $235,850.00 (excluding HST).
For the first stage of the competition, Toronto Cultural Services invites local and national artists or artist teams to respond to this Expression of Interest (EOI) by submitting the following:
•    Resume(s) in text form
•    Artist(s) statement in text form outlining interest in the project and experience (max. 1 page)
•    6 to 8 digital images of recent, relevant work in the following format:
◦    jpg images on a PC compatible CD-R
◦    – each maximum of 1024 x 768 pixels
◦    – each resolution of 72 dpi
◦    – each maximum of 1 MB
◦    – each RGB, sRGB or grayscale colour mode files only (no CMYK)
◦    – caption each with number, your name and title of work
•    An “Image Information” sheet that details per image: number, artist(s) name, title, date, medium, dimensions. Please be sure the number on the list matches the number of the jpeg image.
•    Be sure to label the CD-R with your name.
•    If desired, include a stamped, self-addressed envelope for return of submission material.
Submissions by email are NOT accepted.
Submissions must be received by Friday, 30 September 2011 at 4:00 p.m. via mail or hand-delivered to:
Toronto Cultural Services
City Hall
100 Queen Street West
East Tower, 9th floor
Toronto, ON M5H 2N2
Attention: Janet Wardleworth
Please note: Artists are NOT asked to submit proposals at this first stage of the competition. A short list of 3 to 5 artists will be selected during this first stage. For the second stage of the competition each artist will be paid a fee to develop a project proposal based on a Terms of Reference document provided by the Public Art Office of Cultural Services. A public open house exhibition of the short-listed designs and final design selection will be held at a date and place to be announced. The Public Art Office of Cultural Services in collaboration with Parks, Forestry & Recreation Division of the City of Toronto, administers the York Community Recreation Centre public art project.

¿Sobrevivir?

Total Art Journal is a peer-reviewed journal that seeks to establish a
dynamic forum for interdisciplinary discourse grounded in the arts.
We are committed to nurturing new ways of understanding and
interrogating work that crosses the practice-theory lines endemic to
traditional academic and artistic worlds.

The journal takes its name from Alan Kaprow’s 1958 essay, “Notes on
the Creation of a Total Art,” and sees performance, understood as a
broad category of analysis, as central to the post-disciplinarity at
stake in the concept of a Kaprowian “Total Art.”  Grounded in local
attention, performance here names an approach rather than a discrete
artistic practice – an approach that brings with it new ways of doing
work at the intersections of art/life, theory/practice, and
academia/activism.  The editors seek submissions of innovative work
from any disciplinary background, although work dealing with new and
contemporary practices and work that challenges disciplinary
distinctions is especially welcome.

Total Art Journal is comprised of both an online edition and a print
edition. Our inaugural web-issue will appear Summer 2011.

We publish work in the following formats:

1)    Peer-reviewed essays of 4,000 – 6,000 words in length.

2)    Interviews in traditional and experimental forms, both
transcribed and in video format.

3)    Manifestos of 1,000 – 2,000 words.

4)    Reports written from the midst or in the aftermath of artmaking
and/or research practice.

We are also looking to develop other types/forms of projects and
welcome proposals for experimental and multi-format submissions.

Submissions:

The author’s name should appear only on the title page and in the file
name of the submitted document (e.g., jones.doc).  Please direct
inquiries and submit manuscripts to Natalie S. Loveless at
editor [arobas] totalartjournal [point] com.  For video, phototographic and web-based
project content please send inquiries to jeff [arobas] totalartjournal [point] com.

subject line.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Women & Performance:
a journal of feminist theory

Special Dossier: Born in Flames

2013 will mark the thirtieth anniversary of the release of Lizzie Borden’s 1983 film Born in Flames, a dystopic imagining of a near-future United States that is ten years past a socialist revolution. Far from a levelling of inequality, this socialist experiment is rife with persistent forms of racial and gender inequality. Over the course of its ninety minutes, Born in Flames follows a range of working class and multi-racial feminist political projects —including street patrols, pirate radio stations, community organizing campaigns, labor strikes, guerrilla warfare training, television station takeovers, and finally, in the closing shot of the film, a bombing. In tracing these projects, their overlaps as well as their contradictions, the film calls into question state-centered political utopias and foregrounds concerns about the persistence of sexism and racism in socialist practice and fantasy. Its genre-bending and visual grammar anticipated future experiments in narrative/documentary hybrids and remain surprising and affectively forceful today.
While Born in Flames received some attention from feminist film critics upon its release, the ways in which the film re-imagines feminist politics through queer, anti-racist, and (post)-Marxist politics have not been fully dealt with. More than a generation later, the political questions facing feminist, queer, and trans scholars and activists require exactly the kind of thinking produced and provoked by the film. For the special dossier, we would solicit pieces that focus on assessing the film’s significance and that historicize its critical reception. We would also seek essays that use the myriad issues raised by the film as launch pads for thinking Born in Flames along with other texts and cases; these issues would include state violence, political assassination, liberal reform, transnational anti-colonial solidarity, racial and gender subordination in Marxist theory and practice, queer and trans models of community organizing, armed struggle, media technologies, and feminist coalition-building.
Given its release during an important period of feminist revisioning of film theory, Born in Flames received limited but important attention from feminist film and media scholars, including pieces by Teresa de Lauretis (New German Critique, 1984) and Scott MacDonald (Feminist Studies, 1989), and a 1984 interview conducted by Anne Friedberg and published in the second issue of Women and Performance. Other than a consideration of Borden’s work in a 2000 book by Christina Lane, Born in Flames has been largely neglected both by film studies and by social and political theorists. With this special dossier, we seek to shed scholarly light on what remains a provocative and significant piece of experimental filmmaking. We also aim to put film and performance scholarship in explicit dialogue with political theory and social movement scholarship. Given Borden’s and the actors direct involvement in social movements, Born in Flames demands and requires such a cross-disciplinary consideration that foregrounds the co-articulation of media practice and political practice.
Submission details
Women and Performance invites critical essay or short performance texts that examine these or other questions relevant to a critical discussion of Born in Flames. Essays should be no more than 10,000 words in length and adhere to the Chicago Manual of Style, 15th Edition. Abstracts are welcome for review before the final deadline. Complete essays for consideration must be submitted by December 1, 2011. Please send all work to guest editors Craig Willse and Dean Spade via email (MSWord attachment): cwillse [arobas] gmail [point] com and spaded [arobas] seattleu [point] edu.

Open Call for Exhibitions 2012 – Dumbo Arts Center, DAC, Brooklyn
DAC Open Call 2012
Deadline: September 12th, 2011
After a brief respite, Dumbo Arts Center’s Open Call for Exhibitions is back!
We invite artists and curators from all levels of experience to submit proposals for 2012. 3-4 exhibitions will be chosen for production in our gallery space at 111 Front St. in Dumbo, Brooklyn.
For 2012, DAC will be organizing exhibitions around the theme of “Focus.” Artists and curators are encouraged to interpret the theme as they see fit.
We will consider all proposals, though we will admit a bias to installation, video, the very loud, the very quiet and/or the very small. Proposals can be for solo or group exhibitions. As DAC is a small (and nimble!) institution, artists and curators will have a very hands on role in developing and installing the show. Proposals that include elements of public programming are encouraged.
Application Guidelines
1. The deadline for proposals is September 12th, 2011.
2. Initial proposals should be a written statement only. The proposals should be presented thus:
A summary of the exhibition not exceeding 200 words
A detailed description, including how the exhibition addresses the theme, not more than 1500 words.
Proposals should be submitted as PDFs.
3. All interested applicants should be familiar with DAC’s exhibition space.
4. Please do not include images, videos, CVs or links at this time. Proposals that do not follow this guideline will not be reviewed.
5. Proposals are to be emailed to gallery [arobas] dumboartscenter [point] org no later than midnight, September 12th, 2011.
7. If you have questions, please email us at gallery [arobas] dumboartscenter [point] org. No phone calls, please.
Selection Process
DAC will review all submissions and compile a shortlist of 10 applicants. Additional support materials, images, resumes etc. will be requested from these applicants of interest for Round II of the open call. The decision of Dumbo Arts Center is final. Applicants eligible for Round II be notified by November 1, 2012.

The Living Wall Call for Entries at The Schuylkill Center, PA
The Living Room Show Call for Entries
Deadline: September 16, 2011
Call for Entries: The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education seeks artists for an exhibition titled, “The Living Room” to open in November, 2011. Living installations will bring our gallery to life.
This fall, The Schuylkill Center plans to bring the outdoors in, transforming its gallery space into a “living room.” Both a perfect teaching tool about ecosystems and a needed scenery change for those of us with cabin fever, The Schuylkill Center invites artists to submit proposals of living art works, any handmade art object including plant life.
About The Environmental Art Department
The Environmental Art Department at The Schuylkill Center incites curiosity and sparks awareness for the natural environment through art, and works collaboratively to create exhibitions of the highest quality that attract, educate and inspire the public.
http://www.schuylkillcenter.org/departments/art/
About The Welcome Gallery
The Schuylkill’s Center Welcome Gallery is a public space located in the main building just past the reception desk. Welcome Gallery exhibitions are curated by Art Department Director and or by visiting curators or organizations. The Gallery’s curatorial concepts explore and reflect on environmental themes that relate to other Schuylkill Center departmental activities of Education and Land Restoration. Four to five exhibits are presented each year and include works created in all media. An exhibition statement accompanies the artwork and provides interpretive information about the exhibition and its connection to the environmental issues that it addresses.
Exhibitions are installed for approximately three months. Due to this being an exhibition of living objects, we ask each artist to consider methods by which these pieces will be maintained, and what support you can provide in this aspect of the work. In our small and busy gallery, submissions for wall installations and free standing objects may be better suited than floor pieces.
Application Details:
To apply, send 5 – 10 images as jpegs, a statement and a resume to artprogram [arobas] schuylkillcenter [point] org. The Schuylkill Center is open to submissions of living art objects of varying sizes, shapes and materials. In the proposal, include all dimensions, approximate weight, installation needs and a maintenance plan.
Staff will provide limited but consistent maintenance of art work (light watering if needed). Since art works are living objects, artists must be available to provide more extensive maintenance of their work during the duration of the exhibit if required. The Schuylkill Center has a limited number of pedestals for exhibition use. Artists are responsible for installation and piece-specific support. Include photos and dimensions of the support in your proposal.
All work is insured while on loan at The Schuylkill Center.
Deadline: Friday, September 16, 2011.
