Regart invite les artistes en arts visuels actuels à soumettre un projet d’exposition, répondant à son nouveau mandat.
Le centre, auparavant axé sur le lien entre arts visuels et écriture, a élargi sa mission et privilégie dorénavant des projets qui mettent en œuvre des concepts d’hybridation, tant dans la rencontre entre différents matériaux, ou pratiques artistiques, que dans la conception même de l’exposition.
Implanté à Lévis depuis 1986, le centre d’artistes Regart entend assurer une présence dynamique des arts visuels actuels auprès des publics des territoires de Chaudière-Appalaches et de Québec.
S’intéressant à l’hybridation des formes d’expression, à la rencontre et au mélange des genres, Regart favorise la fréquentation des arts visuels avec d’autres disciplines, voire d’autres modes d’appréhension de la culture contemporaine.
Par des évènements hors murs, infiltrations dans l’espace public, collaborations singulières et publications, Regart ouvre des espaces de réflexion variés permettant aux artistes d’élargir leur champ d’intervention artistique.
Le centre soutient l’expérimentation et la recherche par des projets spéciaux qui amènent les artistes à recontextualiser leur pratique. Ainsi, Regart se veut à la fois un lieu de diffusion et une zone d’expérimentation repensée par les artistes et l’équipe du centre pour chaque évènement présenté.

Commissaires d’expositions / Action Art Actuel

Action Art Actuel [AAA] lance un appel de candidature aux commissaires d’expositions. Pour une seconde année, AAA met ses espaces à la disposition d’un[e] commissaire pour une série de 5 expositions, lui permettant ainsi de jouer un rôle prépondérant dans l’établissement de sa programmation 2010-2011. Nous souhaitons ainsi favoriser la circulation des idées et l’émergence de pratiques de commissariat novatrices.
Le ou la commissaire se verra confier un mandat d’élaboration de cinq expositions regroupées sous une thématique [de son choix]. La série proposée pourra compter 1 ou 2 projet[s] de résidence de recherche et de création d’une durée de 6 à 8 semaines. Un volet performatif pourra être combiné à l’ouverture de certaines des expositions. Une publication rendant compte des expositions et des recherches qui y sont associées sera réalisée au terme de cette série.

Pan! Peinture

Pan! Peinture est de retour!
Suite au franc succès des deux premières éditions, l’équipe de Pan! Peinture vous revient en force. Pan! Peinture est un symposium dédié principalement aux nouvelles pratiques de la peinture et du dessin, dans un souci de permettre un dialogue entre ces diverses pratiques. Pour ce faire, l’accent n’est pas mis uniquement sur le support pictural, mais également sur ce qui l’entoure, en transformant un espace urbain en laboratoire de création et d’échange, devenant tour à tour, un atelier, une salle de concert, un salon de fanzines, etc. Les artistes sélectionnés seront donc invités à travailler pendant un mois dans cet atelier provisoire, ouvert au public, puis transformé en lieu d’exposition à la n de l’événement. Cette exposition, d’une durée de deux semaines, sera orientée autour des productions et des expériences développées lors du symposium.
Pour ce troisième rendez-vous, Pan! Peinture a demandé à Pascale Bédard, sociologue particulièrement intéressée par les enjeux de la création artistique aujourd’hui, d’assurer le commissariat de l’événement.
L’événement se tiendra à Québec du 30 juillet au 27 août 2010, pour le symposium, puis du 27 août au 12 septembre 2010, pour l’exposition.
Proposition thématique: Expérience de pensée
L’expérience de pensée est une méthode d’investigation utilisée en science, notamment en physique, où elle permit d’innombrables découvertes déterminantes, dont celles de Galilée. L’expérience de pensée vise à convoquer l’imagination humaine comme outil privilégié et « consiste à forger une représentation qui n’est pas parfaitement conforme à notre appréhension de la réalité, qui semble donc “fausse”, ou du moins ctive, mais pour mieux aboutir à la formulation d’une vérité sur notre monde » (Bellis et Brun-Rovet, 2009). À la fois exercice d’imagination, expérience ctionnelle et ré exion visant à faire émerger les « faces cachées » du monde et des phénomènes, l’expérience de pensée semble entretenir de profondes similitudes avec les processus de la création artistique.
C’est dans cet esprit que les artistes sont invités, lors de Pan! Peinture, à ré échir leur pratique dans la perspective d’une expérience de pensée. Cette thématique se voudrait plutôt une orientation d’action, donnant à chacun l’occasion d’inscrire sans compromis sa propre pratique au sein d’une cohérence commune, partagée dans l’espace de cet événement. C’est pour mieux rendre compte d’un champ de création in niment diversi é, qu’a été choisi ce thème de l’expérience de pensée, qui permet l’intégration cohérente de tout l’éventail possible des pratiques, dans une proposition qui concerne plutôt les processus que les formes elles-mêmes.

Programmation 2010-2011 / Vidéographe

Le centre Vidéographe invite les artistes, les commissaires, les centres d’artistes et les galeries du Québec et du Canada à soumettre des programmations d’art vidéo ou des projets d’exposition en arts médiatiques.
Depuis sa création en 1998, le secteur programmation de Vidéographe se consacre à promouvoir et à faire connaître l’art vidéo dans ses multiples incarnations et dans les rapports qu’il entretient avec d’autres pratiques artistiques. Il diffuse annuellement six activités dans différents lieux à Montréal, en collaboration avec plusieurs organismes culturels.
Les œuvres sélectionnées par un comité de pairs seront présentées dans la programmation annuelle du Vidéographe. Sont encouragées les propositions qui stimulent une réflexion sur le langage vidéographique et ses modes de représentation ; qui incitent au débat d’idées ; qui favorisent les échanges entre les pratiques en arts médiatiques.
Notez que le Vidéographe paie des droits d’auteurs et des cachets d’exposition, de commissariat et de rédaction.

LES ARTS ET LA VILLE lance un appel de candidatures Laboratoires artistiques de développement local 2010
Le réseau Les Arts et la Ville est heureux d’annoncer la tenue de la troisième édition des Laboratoires artistiques de développement local et lance un appel de candidatures. Devant le succès des éditions précédentes, trois laboratoires auront lieu cette année respectivement au Québec, au Nouveau-Brunswick et dans une communauté francophone d’une autre province canadienne. Le présent appel de candidatures s’adresse aux municipalités québécoises membres du réseau.
Vous désirez vivre l’expérience stimulante des Laboratoires?
Qu’est-ce qu’un laboratoire artistique de développement local?
L’aventure consiste à orchestrer les conditions d’une lecture originale d’une municipalité sous la forme d’une balade d’une journée entre un élu et un artiste, autour de préoccupations de développement local vécues par la municipalité hôte : transformation des paysages, manque d’espaces publics, isolement social et spatial, identité visuelle, etc.
Durant le parcours, l’élu et l’artiste, équipés d’un carnet de bord et d’un appareil photo, prennent des notes, des clichés et échafaudent des hypothèses.
L’expérience ne débouche pas nécessairement sur des réalisations concrètes; il s’agit avant tout d’un espace d’idéation et d’échanges. C’est d’ailleurs là que réside l’originalité de la démarche : dans le croisement de visions qui d’ordinaire se rencontrent peu ou pas. Au terme de l’expérience, la population locale est conviée à réagir, à formuler des constats, des impressions et des idées lors d’une rencontre publique qui se veut conviviale et la plus ouverte possible.
Sont admissibles les municipalités québécoises membres du réseau, de même que les municipalités faisant partie d’une MRC membre. Les candidatures seront évaluées par un jury indépendant.
Les dossiers de candidature doivent parvenir par courriel à Les Arts et la Ville au plus tard vendredi, le 11 décembre 2009 à 17h.

Appel de propositions
La Galerie d’art de Matane invite les artistes en art actuel de la région (Bas-Saint-Laurent / Gaspésie) à nous faire parvenir une proposition d’installation adaptée à l’espace.
Trois artistes seront sélectionnés, en misant sur la diversité et la complémentarité des démarches.
Chacun-e occupera un des espaces de la galerie (entre 30m2 et 40m2). Voir le plan pour choisir l’espace privilégié.
Un trajet pré-déterminé de 1.5m de largeur devra être libre pour la circulation des visiteurs.
Des modifications au trajet peuvent être proposées pour les besoins de l’installation.

Un texte de démarche artistique
Une proposition d’installation avec photos ou croquis
Un Curriculum Vitae (2 pages maximum)

La Galerie d’art de Matane a pour mandat la diffusion et la vulgarisation artistiques en art actuel.

Thématique
Juxtaposée à la notion de résistance, celle de l’adhérence peut sembler avoir fonction d’antonyme: résister à quelque chose signifie ne pas y adhérer. D’un autre côté, résister, quoi qu’en prétendent certains inventeurs de “nonistes”, c’est aussi adhérer à autre chose. Entre les deux, le niveau d’adhérence peut servir à mesurer le degré même d’une résistance à l’institutionnalisation, à la cooptation ou à la récupération. L’adhérence peut être une arme de la résistance tout comme elle peut être une épine dans son pied.
Bref, résistance et adhérence vont de pairs.
Mais leur opposition n’est pas donnée. En effet, la notion de résistance_adhérence peut être perçue plutôt comme un processus (au quotidien), une démarche, un travail à faire à tous les niveaux (tout le temps). Le choix du concept d’adhérence, en contraste à celui d’adhésion, signale une possibilité de le traiter en termes de degré, de coefficient — c’est-à-dire comme indice — et non comme identité. L’adhérence met alors de l’avant les idées de terrain glissant, de force d’attraction, de friction, de lubrification, de rythme, de viscosité, d’enchevêtrement, tout comme celles de la dextérité, de la navigation, de la finesse, bref, de l’art. Comment aborder la résistance_adhérence en ces termes, c’est-à-dire non plus en oppositions, mais en niveaux d’intensité? En quoi l’analyse de l’idée de résistance_adhérence peut-elle mener à une meilleure compréhension de la créativité, de l’autonomie? En d’autres termes, comment traiter la notion de résistance du point de vue de celle de l’adhérence peut-elle exposer de nouvelles pistes, de nouvelles prises?

Le centre dʼexposition CIRCA privilégie les œuvres sculpturales et les installations. Il se veut
cependant ouvert à toutes les disciplines et disponible aux propositions émanent dʼartistes pour
qui son espace et sa lumière représentent un défi à lʼhabiter, un lieu unique et privilégié,
indissociable de leur exposition.
Le dossier doit comprendre :
• Un maximum de 10 images dʼœuvres récentes : soit en diapositives, CD-ROM, vidéo
VHS et/ou DVD.
Diapositives : s.v.p indiquer le sens par un point de couleur dans le coin inférieur
gauche.
Fichiers acceptables sur CD-ROM : images : .jpg de préférence
: textes : .doc .rtf .pdf
Le CD-ROM doit obligatoirement comprendre une description imprimée de la marche à
suivre pour son visionnement.

It will be nearly half a century since Rachel Carson’s book “Silent Spring”, just over five since Al Gore’s “Inconvenient Truth”, and less than three years since Anya Hindmarch’s “I’m not a plastic bag” eco-bag hit the shelves. The grassroots sustainability movement has taken hold fostering a green life style. This may be a victory of ideology, yet at the same time, it has matured into a new social norm that suspiciously smells of capitalism. The replacements are still a chain in consumption. Ecological compact fluorescent light bulbs contain mercury, and biofuels have an impact beyond ethanol production. If sustainability is narrowly defined as a closed system that produces what it consumes, by all means, the boundary conditions leave us hanging, looking for more. What can this more, be?
For this year’s Subtle Technologies Festival, we wish to explore sustainability through a critical multidisciplinary lens. We invite investigations of the role that decentralization, diversity and societal power dynamics plays in our attempts at maintaining a sustainable future. Where does the death of languages, cultures and peoples fit into the sustainability discussion? We look forward to critical discussions that explore multiple meanings of sustainability in this state of ecological and global health. We will be discussing the science and technology behind sustainable practices and design as well as the science behind some of the events and circumstances that have driven us to seek sustainable solutions. What role does the artist play in bringing forth new layers of understandings in this discussion?
As in previous years, we invite submissions from various practices. For 12 years, Subtle Technologies has provided a forum where participants share their projects, theories and technologies around an annual theme. Subtle Technologies is also a place where artists, scientists, and other innovators inspire, inform and generate new concepts and tools.
Specifically, this year we are looking for proposals for presentations for our symposium (presentations are from 30 to 45 minutes long) , works for our exhibitions, video and film submissions for screenings, workshops and partners for collaborations. Some example areas of exploration in sustainability include: political and historical perspectives, design and architectural practices, global warming, climate change refugees, agriculture, water and other resource management, cultural preservation, material science, alternative energy systems, corporate responsibility, co-operatives and microfinance, biodiversity conservation, preservation of indigenous knowledge, and the culture of consumption.

The City of Vancouver invites established and emerging Canadian artists to submit expressions of interest to develop a public artwork for the Vancouver Olympic Centre/Vancouver Paralympic Centre at Hillcrest Park. The new facility will be the site of the Olympic and Paralympic curling tournaments. After the games it will be converted to a large recreation complex serving an estimated 3000 visitors a day.

An Exhibition Curated by Christopher Hume
The use of public space to manifest art projects, performances and interventions as well as architectural and societal experiments has become a world-wide phenomenon. There are numerous on-line sites that show examples of Public Realm endeavours.
Some examples: recent TV news programs showed a Metro entrance turned into a piano keyboard, played as commuters entered and left the subway. New York has turned a large part of Times Square into a pedestrian space. Bike rallies and theme races like the run inside the ROM are performances in the public realm as are many Nuit Blanche events. Sculpture and painting from graffiti art to urban guerilla gardening is altering our perception of public realm use. This call is for ideas on what you would do.

Camp has been defined as an aesthetic of the tasteless and the ostentatious – iIts appeal comes from its gaud. It has been used to throw conventional values into question, and to point out the fallacies in the concept of style by embodying them.
We seek submissions of existing or proposed works of any shape or medium that reflect the theme of camp.
The selected works will respond to and accentuate the dynamic nature of the lobby and stairwell spaces of the Drake Hotel. The show is scheduled to take place in summer 2010.

“Sounding Landscapes: a multi-channel audio event”
This call is for sonic art explorations of literal or fantastic interpretations of acoustic space, utilizing spatial production innovations and the relationship between space, time and physical energy.
For an upcoming multidisciplinary concert event in March, holophon.ca is looking for multi-channel sonic compositions in any genre. In particular, we are looking for works that trouble the definitions of space and place through multi-channel audio methods.
Your multi-channel composition(s) can range from four to eight channels. All accepted submissions will be presented through an eight-channel octophonic (equal-spaced, lateral plane ring) speaker system.
• We will consider sonic works that incorporate video or live components, including dance, poetry or experimental theater.
• Artists must make their own arrangements for performers if this is a component of your work.
• We are interested in Saskatchewan-based submissions for live performance: these works must consider multi-source, spatial sound (live and/or pre-recorded) in presentation. Travel expenses will be provided for out of town performers as funding allows.
• All artists featured in the concert will receive an honorarium

The MMK ranks among the world’s leading museums for contemporary art and has established a firm place for itself in the international museum landscape in the 19 years since its founding. The MMK is seeking to fill the position of curator and assistant director as soon as possible. The position involves a wide range of responsibilities including administrative and representational duties as well as helping devise and organise the museum’s programme of exhibitions and events.
The administrative duties involve human resources management, representing the museum’s interests vis-à-vis various municipal agencies and authorities, and coordinating processes related to infrastructure and the exhibition programme. Furthermore, as assistant director you will be in charge of developing and maintaining contacts with the museum’s partners and sponsors in the private sector, raising funds from private donors and sponsors, and organising special events and cultural excursions. For the position advertised we require someone with a PhD or an equivalent degree in art history and with several years’ experience of working in a managerial capacity in a comparable cultural institution. The successful applicant will have gained practical experience in museum management and in handling personnel and budgetary responsibilities. We require someone with excellent knowledge of German, familiarity with international exhibition practice and an extensive network of contacts with other professionals in the field and with international cultural institutions. The position also requires an excellent command of both spoken and written English.

The Travellers Box Project
There are two elements to the project: The International Box and The Local Box. The structure is the same for both, with the exception that the context of the Local Box stems from a national-local context, mainly based around a small urban community in Denmark, specifically the town Vodskov in North Jutland, and work made will reflect this.
Artists are most often sourced via the curator / co-curators, however the project is open and short proposals outlining an interest in the project and how one’s practice connects with it are welcome and in fact encouraged.

Within those realms, politically-oriented, perhaps sensitive issues can be taken on, examined, considered and incorporated into the artistic process.

HMC is dedicated to promoting international art and the understanding of world cultures, through high quality art exhibitions, cultural exchanges and related educational programs. Based in Dallas and Budapest, the organization operates throughout the world. Its principal focus is an international residency program to which artists from around the world are invited. The goal is to provide a supportive community with uninterrupted time to work.
The residencies offer participants to interact with other artists representing a variety of cultures and backgrounds. Accepted applicants are expected to speak and understand English. Approximately 6 artists are invited for each session. The residence offers shared room/bath as living quarters. Studio, room, workshop, exhibition, seminar and gallery tour are included in the cost. The night is yet to be determined because it is weather dependent. We will be building a snow wall in the backyard of the BS Gallery (our home) that will serve as a surface for video projection. It is our hope to use this snow wall as the catalyst or conceptual guide for the work submitted and selected. The purpose of the festival is to present different cultures, film language, exchange of ideas, as well as presentation and promotion of independent film art. The event will take place in a beautiful, historical building in the center of Jelenia Góra – “Marysieńka” cinema on 16 – 21 February 2010.
The festival will comprise of following categories:
-independent film
-amateur film
-student film
The independent film group is geared towards independent film makers.
The student film category is for graduates and students of film making and art major in schools and universities.
The amateur film class is for those, who make movies not professionally (here the only restriction is duration-it can’t exceed 20 minutes).
The festival organizers may allow other longer films enter the competition, if those possess outstanding artistic qualities.
To every entry the contestants should attach filled application form (in electronic form), signified, legible video tape/DVD or other with the film’s copy. The above should be sent to the following address:

We have the pleasure to inform you that the festival will host professional and international Jury, as well as other well-known representatives of the film and media industry. The oversight over the festival is held by some major national media; from where we also notice a growing interest in the event and consequently its participants.
Because the main aim of the festival is presentation of the film makers’ accomplishments, coupled with any new trends and ideas in the independent movie making scene, the character of the festival makes room for variety of forms – feature films, documentaries, and all kind of experimental forms created with the help of a video camera. Appelboom, situated in the hamlet of La Pommerie, (Saint-Setiers – Corrèze), is part of the contemporary art network in Limousin. Since 1995, Appelboom invites artists in residency: dancers, actors, musicians, visual artists…
Rich of its natural preserved environment and its cultural open-mindedness, the Plateau de Millevaches, offers a reflection framework adapted to experimentation, development and crossed contemporary art practices. This geographical area, which peaks between 700 and 1000 meters high, is located in the Natural Regional Park and covered with forest and heath. Timber and farming industries are the main economical activities in this area where the population density is quite low.
The strong character of the territory often leads artists to think their projects in relationship with the landscape and the local environment and to meet the public during and after the creative process.
Two other residences dedicated to visual arts are programmed every year. Contrary in previous years, there will be no more call for proposal concerning residences.
We thus encourage artists spontaneously send us their portfolio in the course of the year for the residences’s program of the seasons to come.
Residency framework and objectives
In 2010, Appelboom offers one residency dedicated to sound art (1 residency/year)
The residency addresses artists whose works are concerned with territory and who use sound media: music, sound installation and cross-boundaries projects.
A project can be the collaboration of two artists maximum.
The staff is developing a network of persons and structures allowing the artists projects to come within the scope of the local context. The aim is thus, according to the artist’s needs, to facilitate the integration, the realization and the diffusion of the work that has been produced in residency. A list of those structures can be requested at the association.
Period and location of residencies
According to the project, periods of residency last from one and a half month to three months.
Residencies take place in the converted barn at La Pommerie, 19290 Saint-Setiers.
Legal framework
A contract specifying the commitment of the association (as a producer) and the artist will be signed before the beginning of the stay.
The artist will have to justify of a social statute (or an administrative structure) allowing him to issue a bill.
Disposal resources
At the artist’s disposal:
• An apartment : Two bedrooms, a bathroom with toilets, a kitchen.
• A studio : An 80 m2 studio (the studio and the apartment can be shared by several artists).
• Equipment : No specific technical equipment is available on the site. The staff helps the artists to find the
necessary equipment to hire (this expense will be at the artist’s charge). Internet access is available.
• An exhibition space : 120 m2 of exhibition space.
• Indemnity : a first grant of 1.500 Euros for artistic fees is planned for the whole residence. Expenses for transports and meals will stay at the charge of the artist. A second grant planned for the production is calculated according to the project to be realized.
• Communication : Communication charges (openings, publishing, catalogs, mailing…) will be at the expense of Appelboom.
• Publishing : According to the work produced in residency, a published edition is envisaged in relation with the artist and will be submitted to the decision of a publishing advice commission. The publishing project could be the issuing of a catalog for visual artists or a CD for sound artists (in collaboration with Kaon label, Limoges – www.kaon.org).
Educational workshops
With the aim of developing cultural mediation and raising awareness of art and contemporary creation, educational workshops are organized with the local structures in order to develop a common thought on landscape and territory.
Artists who wish to intervene in this framework are welcomed to send projects according to their work and artistic processes. These workshops will be the object of a specific contract and additional remuneration (to be determined according to the project) for the artists applying also for residency.
Important remarks
As the residency location is quite isolated, we highly recommend artists to come by car.
It is possible for the artists to come previously to the residency if they wish to.

The Festival seeks to highlight new and compelling work in the field of generative or process music – focusing on sound pieces which are inspired by or emulate algorithms, biology, or other defined systems.
From scores generated from nature (Mamoru Fujieda’s “Patterns of Plants”) or mathematics (John Cage’s “Sonatas and Interludes”), to interactives which allow users to create music (Brian Eno’s Bloom for iPhone) or a system as simple as 2 tape recorders (”It’s Gonna Rain” by Steve Reich), this space has enjoyed a compelling history.
As well as the traditional execution of code outputting music, we’re also interested in projects which expand the definition or approach to this field. This could, for example, including hardware-based projects like custom instruments, more lo-fi, organic systems, or hybrids such as a string quartet playing a generative score.
Web-based new-media projects will be shown onsite via a Macbook with wireless connection, as well as linked via the festival website. Performances should be between 20 and 40 minutes long, to allow a diverse selection of pieces over the festival period.
We’re unable to offer artist compensation or provide travel costs to the event, although composers outside of the Berlin area are encouraged to partner with local artists to perform works. Please contact us if you’re interested in this avenue.

Description
VOCENTO and ARCOmadrid invite proposals for innovative and experimental online platforms or effective web tools to foster and stimulate the presence, exhibition, communication and management of art on the Internet. The selected proposal will be awarded with a production budget of 15,000 euros (taxes included) to realize the project.
The competition wishes to encourage research in the field of social technologies and artistic practice, and more specifically to identify current needs and provide suitable solutions for art galleries and art market more generally in the context of the Internet. The intention behind the competition is to enhance communication and exchange between the field of art and wider society.
The proposal – a complete web concept, environment or a tool – shall offer an application to be implemented by individual art galleries and / or ARCO Fair.
The winning proposal will be selected by an international Jury, made up of two experts in the field of art and technology: Dr. Joasia Krysa (KURATOR/University of Plymouth, UK), CSDVA (winner of the 2009 edition with the project WAAP, Croatia) and a representative of VOCENTO (Spain). LaAgencia will act as coordinator of the award and jury secretary.
• Production of the award-winning proposal has to be completed in a maximum period of nine months. Once produced, a complete web concept, or environment, or tool, will be freely distributed for implementation by the participant galleries at ARCOmadrid´s 2010 edition and the galleries participating at ARCOmadrid´s 2011 edition.
• Notification of the winner date: 19th February 2010.
• The Award prize of the winning proposal will receive a total of 15.000 euros budget (taxes included).

Open Engagement is a three-day conference that is an initiative of the Portland State University Art and Social Practice concentration and co-sponsored by Pacific Northwest College of Art and Portland Community College. Directed by Jen Delos Reyes and Harrell Fletcher and planned in conjunction with the Portland State University MFA Monday Night Lecture Series, this conference features three nationally and internationally renowned artists: Mark Dion, Amy Franceschini and Nils Norman. The conference will showcase work by Temporary Services, InCUBATE, and a new project by Mark Dion created in collaboration with the PSU Art and Social Practice concentration.
The artists involved in Open Engagement: Making Things, Making Things Better, Making Things Worse, challenge our traditional ideas of what art is and does. These artist’s projects mediate the contemporary frameworks of art as service, as social space, as activism, as interactions, and as relationships, and tackle subject matter ranging from urban planning, alternative pedagogy, play, fiction, sustainability, political conflict and the social role of the artist.
Can socially engaged art do more harm than good? Are there ethical responsibilities for social art? Does socially engaged art have to do civic or public good? Can there be transdisciplinary approaches to contemporary art making that would contribute to issues such as urban planning and sustainability? As both urban planning and contemporary art imagine new worlds, how can art projects be seen as potential models for living?
This conference is an intensive, immersive, around the clock experience. Open Engagement is approached as a social art work in itself. Artists will create housing, food, transportation, exhibitions, partnerships, exhibitions, tours, special events and include of multiple audiences from their own interests and practices, building on the ideas explored throughout the conference.
Open Engagement is a free conference that will happen May 14-17, 2010, in Portland, Oregon. Contributors are not asked to pay a registration fee and the public will not be charged to attend. Contributors to the event will be supported in the following ways: A variety of transportation will be provided that draws on Portland’s bike culture and takes advantage of its excellent public transportation. Contributors will be housed in Portland homes, paired with a host based on common interests. Several meals during the conference will be provided that emphasize slow food, community cooking and underground cafes. Other meals will highlight Portland’s food cart culture. Nightlife and social activities will be integrated into local businesses, using local pubs and cafes as conference hubs. Open Engagement is a conference, an exhibition/performance venue, a mini-residency and workshops. Participants will partake in experiences that connect them with each other: artists, art institutions, audiences, and communities.
You are invited to contribute to Open Engagement: Making Things, Making Things Better, Making Things Worse by submitting your projects, performances, tours, presentations, or panel ideas. The Post-Glass* Video Festival will present works that explore unique relationships between digital video/film and glass, in light of the studio practice of a significant number of emerging artists.
We seek works that toy with phenomenology, materiality or social/personal experience of glass through video. For example, you may be working on an animation with clear glass subjects. Perhaps you wish to speak about the nature of glass through non-glass materials. Maybe you see something that is captured only through the tools and format of video. It is possible that your experience of a certain phenomenon is remarkably un-glass-like and evident only as a choreographed act in video. Or that the outcome of your artistic process builds an insightful or entertaining drama, best voiced through digital “film”.
In short, the relationship that you explore between these two media may be rational, personal, virtual, abstract, animated, narrative or process-based, as long as you have an understanding and appreciation for video as much as you do for its counterpart in material / phenomenon.
We seek works whose concepts may trace back to either the direct/mediated experience of glass or an active investigation of certain phenomena – optical, acoustical, olfactory, haptic, and yet, manifest only through the vocabulary of video. We seek self-contained video pieces, rather than documentation of ephemeral work unless it plays a greater role in the feature. Convince us. Happiness / Sadness will open in Exit Art’s main gallery in Spring / Summer 2010

ABOUT
This exhibition is an exploration of the dynamic of opposites. For Exit Art, the study of paradoxes is a vital purpose of culture. We are looking for works in any media that express, metaphorically or concretely, the notions of happiness and sadness. Artworks can explore one or both issues. Identifying happiness helps to understand sadness; one cannot exist without the other.
For thousands of years, philosophers, psychologists, neuroscientists, theologians and cultural critics such as Aristotle, Confucius, Locke, Camus, and the Dalai Lama have tried to understand, define or attain the elusive and desirable state of “happiness.” Is happiness a state of mind, an emotion, or neurologically coded? Are there true external sources of happiness, as pop-culture and mass marketing seem to suggest? Can happiness be produced through the use of modern pharmaceuticals?
There has been a recent surge of media attention on the topic of happiness. For instance, the country of Bhutan has declared happiness as its index of growth. Instead of a Gross Domestic Product, Bhutan has a Gross National Happiness Index, which is measured by the “four pillars of a happy society”: the economy, culture, the environment and good governance. The most popular course at Harvard University in Spring 2006, taught by Tal Ben-Shahar and attended by over 800 students, was on the topic of happiness. The Dalai Lama has said that happiness is the ultimate enlightenment, the state of being that we all strive for and that lies within our grasp. Even the Declaration of Independence names happiness as one of our unalienable rights in stating life, liberty and “the pursuit of happiness.”
Amidst stories of recession, war, and personal and political struggle, we want to offer artists a chance to think about and express the notions of happiness / sadness. Responses can be as varied as a presentation of one’s own sources of happiness and sadness; aesthetic or formal interpretations of the subject, whether critical or affirmative; a cross-cultural study on happiness and sadness; or a geographic, anthropologic, or scientific investigation of the concept.
We want to know what aesthetically and artistically these two concepts mean to the creative mind.
HOW TO APPLY

ABOUT CONCEPTPLUS
Exit Art currently works with a curatorial model called ConceptPlus, which begins with a theme or concept that is then publicized through a call for proposals. For each ConceptPlus idea, the curators first chose a group of artists that form the base of the exhibition. Then Exit Art issues an international call for artists to propose new or newly-contextualized work in response to a given theme or cultural condition. The exhibition is then curated by Exit Art’s curatorial staff, who view all the proposals for new work and work samples submitted by artists and select projects to be presented and/or commissioned for the exhibition. Every artist who submits a proposal has equal access to the curators, regardless of their previous experience, making ConceptPlus a highly democratic curatorial model.

CONTEXT:Eyebeam is the leading not-for-profit art and technology center in the USA. Our unique collaborative environment fosters fellowships and residencies, research, education, public programming and a vital web space, eyebeam.org. We are located in the heart of NYC’s Chelsea art district in a resource rich 15,000 sq.ft. space. OVERVIEW: You’ve got big ideas. You could use a little time and money, not to mention support and inspiration, to create a visionary project. Apply now for Eyebeam’s Winter/Spring 2010 Residency cycle. Residents are granted a $5,000 stipend and 24/7 access to Eyebeam’s state of the art digital design and fabrication studios at their Chelsea facility.
Up to five Residents will be selected for the upcoming 5-month cycle, which will run from March 1, 2010 to July 31, 2010.
SUPPORT: Eyebeam residencies support the creative research, production and presentation of initiatives querying art, technology and culture. The residency is a period of concentration and immersion in artistic investigation, research or production of visionary, experimental applications and projects. PARTICIPATION: Residents are expected to participate in public events including workshops, Open Office Hours (Tuesdays, 2 – 4), demonstrations of research in progress, panel discussions, and online releases, in addition to Open Studios (two-day events, held once in the residency period).
The program term is from beginning of March to the end of July. Residents will be selected from an open call, based on the quality of the work or research being proposed, the availability of the necessary tools and skills to support the work, and in consideration of the overarching research themes and activities of the organization.
Core to Eyebeam’s methodology is the brokering of relationships between artists, hackers, coders, engineers and other creative technologists in the context of an open and shared culture of investigation and critique. We foster and facilitate relationships whereby technologists and artists come together to germinate and incubate their ideas, develop new processes, and create new works through a period of immersion in a social and professional context which is rich in technology, expertise and ideas. MEDIALAB PRADO – CALL FOR PROJECTS, OPEN UP, SPAIN
Open Up is a workshop for the development of projects for the digital facade in Medialab-Prado’s building. Until now, urban screens and digital façades have been greatly developed technically, but its contents, which are usually produced by advertisement agencies and occasionally artists, have been created, in many cases, during closed processes. Open Up suggests opening the processes of content production and explores collaborative systems of interaction and creation related to the digital façade (and therefore, public space).

KiC – Kunst in der Carlshütte, a non-profit initiative of the ACO Group, and the towns of Büdelsdorf and Rendsburg, organises an annual international exhibition of visual arts from June to the end of September. The art exhibited at Nord Art is selected by a jury and features all visual art media. The exhibition in summer 2009 displayed the work of 218 artists from 34 countries, selected from above 1000 applications.

Exhibition area: The old foundry building in the Carlshütte (20,000 m2), ACO Wagenremise (400 m2), ACO Gartenhaus (100 m2), a 60,000 square metre sculpture park, as well as public spaces in the towns of Büdelsdorf and Rendsburg.

Jury: The jury is made up of artists, an art historian, and the supervisory board and management of KiC. The jury will send out its decision in writing by the end of March 2010.
Delivery and other information: The works selected by the jury must be delivered to the Carlshütte, Vorwerksallee, 24782 Büdelsdorf, Germany, on 7 or 8 May 2009 (early delivery possible with the prior approval of the organisers). All of the delivered works will be insured subject to the general insurance conditions from the time of delivery to the time of collection. Transport costs are covered by the artist. We will be happy to help organise shared transport arrangements.

Catalogue: A catalogue in DIN A4 format is produced for the exhibition with one page per artist. The digital photos and text on each of the participating artists is requested when the jury’s decision is sent out. The artists receive a free copy of the catalogue.
KiC Symposium: A symposium will be held in May 2010 in the run up to Nord Art. Approximately 10 artists are invited to attend the symposium. Large works for Nord Art are produced at the symposium. If you wish to attend the symposium, please mark the “Symposium” box in the application form. We also require details on the materials and dimensions, estimated time required, photos with examples of works, and a sketch where possible. The participants at the symposium enjoy free materials, a workplace, and accommodation at the exhibition site itself. The work created remains the property of the artist and will be exhibited at Nord Art for at least 2 years – with the exception of works which are sold.

Call For Video Art Proposals: Constellations Project

Scheduled to coincide with the APT, the project will install contemporary video art from the Asia- Pacific Region in a range of gallery, business and private sites across the Brisbane CBD. Seattle seeks artist for Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop artwork
Selected artist to create new media work for urban trail

SEATTLE— Seattle’s Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, in collaboration with Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), seeks an artist or artist team to create a new media artwork for the Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop.

Named for a Duwamish chief, the six-mile loop links more than 35 pocket parks and waterways around Lake Union. The multi-use trail connects diverse neighborhoods and passes through a variety of urban spaces, including residential areas, industrial areas and a working waterfront with historical maritime uses.
The selected artist or artist team will create a new media project drawing on the history and/or context of the site. Possible media include podcast- or cell-phone based audio work, audio and/or video tours using mobile media and GPS, and walking tours or interactive events using the Web.
The call is open to professional artists living in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, California or British Columbia. The $18,000 budget includes design, fabrication and installation costs. The Rea Garden Residency, Birmingham, UK

The Rea Garden is an outdoor artist project space based in the centre of industrial Digbeth, Birmingham. The space itself was cut-off from the public for around twenty years due to a fire in the adjoining warehouse which resulted in the location being boarded up.
During 2009 and 2010 Behind Closed Doors are hosting four artist residencies at The Rea Garden, offering artists the opportunity to spend time in the space, producing new site responsive works and exhibiting the work to the public.
The residency will last for 10 weeks. This will culminate in a two week exhibition, open to the public with a private viewing. The resident can access the space at all times and the residency will involve the space being open to the public at least one day a week.
There is a bursary of £1000 to cover artists’ fees, as well as a budget of up to £500 for materials and equipment.
