APPEL DE DOSSIERS
La Ville de Québec a confié le mandat à EXMURO arts publics de concevoir une nouvelle édition de l’événement PASSAGES INSOLITES prévue à l’été 2017 dans le Quartier Création, soit les quartiers du Vieux-Port, Place-Royale et Petit-Champlain
Passages Insolites a pour objectifs de déployer d’intrigantes installations éphémères qui animent le quartier avec ludisme, tout en questionnant notre rapport au monde et à l’espace urbain. Cet événement en art public à grand rayonnement propose aux visiteurs une expérience artistique unique à travers d’étonnantes propositions visuelles.
Pour l’édition 2017, EXMURO invite les artistes visuels de toutes disciplines et les collectifs d’architectes à concevoir des œuvres de grande envergure qui exploitent tout à la fois l’idée du passage et de l’insolite. Que le passage soit physique, métaphorique ou virtuel, que l’insolite surgisse du caractère surréel, ludique ou extravagant, chaque œuvre devra réinterpréter ces idées et proposer à sa manière un passage insolite.

EXMURO portera une attention particulière aux propositions qui sortent de l’ordinaire par leur caractère monumental, surprenant et déstabilisant ainsi que par leur potentiel à provoquer un contraste fort avec l’architecture de la ville. Bref, en mettre plein la vue et affirmer, sans retenu, la place de l’art dans le paysage urbain !
Les créateurs sont invités à proposer une œuvre conçue en fonction d’un site précis (in situ) et/ou pouvant s’adapter à différents lieux (parc, trottoir, toit, façade, place publique, quai, etc.). Le lieu peut être choisi en se référant aux lieux des éditions antérieures (http://exmuro.com/fr/liste-projets/) ou bien l’artiste peut proposer un nouveau lieu (sous condition d’autorisation). Il est à noter qu’une même œuvre peut se déployer à plusieurs endroits différents (morcellement).
Il est possible de contacter la direction d’EXMURO afin de valider les choix de lieux avant le dépôt du projet.
Un budget maximal de 30 000 $ est prévu pour chaque œuvre, incluant les droits d’auteurs, les honoraires professionnels, les frais de montage et démontage. EXMURO effectuera un suivi artistique et technique tout au long du processus de réalisation.
Les œuvres doivent être durables (quatre mois), sécuritaires et autonomes (ne demandant pas de surveillance particulière).

PROGRAMMATION 2017-2018

Pouvoirs occultes et territoires rituels

Depuis quelques années, Verticale articule ses choix artistiques autour de pratiques campées dans la réalité du territoire et de l’organisme. Les formes des œuvres et des projets présentés antérieurement sont multiples : sculpture et installation, infiltration graphique, déambulation sonore, art action. D’abord liées entre elles par une approche formelle, ces propositions visaient, largement, une exploration critique
et/ou poétique du territoire.

Cette année, Verticale propose aux artistes de jeter un regard oblique sur le paysage lavallois — naturel, social et/ou politique —, en le considérant sous l’angle particulier du rite et des rituels, comme vecteurs de cohésion et de singularisation communautaire, de marginalisation sociale et d’expression d’un pouvoir autarcique.

D’une telle observation du paysage, Verticale voit affleurer deux figures archétypales et métaphoriques distinctes, chacune entretenant un rapport occulte au territoire à travers un ensemble de pratiques rituelles : la sorcière et le gangster.

Liée à la terre par une ascendance d’ordre spirituel, la sorcière transgresse la norme, et survit grâce à sa force qu’elle tire d’une source surnaturelle. Insoumise et affranchie des idées matérialistes, la sorcière se solidarise et entretient l’art des rituels afin d’accomplir son culte, de manière à repenser les structures de savoir et de pouvoir.

Rattaché au territoire dans un rapport d’exploitation, le gangster infiltre la société et les institutions. Il prospère illicitement et impunément au détriment du système qui le craint et le maintient souvent pour éviter que sa menace ne le détruise de l’intérieur. Organisé et déviant, le gangster agit de façon concertée et pose les actes exigés, rationalisés, pour le maintien de son pouvoir, qu’il veut dominant.

Verticale — centre d’artistes est ouvert aux propositions en art performatif, puisqu’en tant que membre de VIVA ! Art Action, le centre participera à la prochaine édition de la biennale, prévue à l’automne 2017.

Verticale — centre d’artistes invite les artistes émergents, en mi-carrière ou établis à soumettre leur projet. Verticale est ouvert aux pratiques qui favorisent les dialogues interculturels et invite également les femmes, les membres des minorités visibles et/ou ethniques, les autochtones, ainsi que les personnes handicapées à déposer leur dossier.

Centre d’arts visuels de l’Alberta

Les artistes, groupes d’artistes et commissaires de toutes disciplines sont invités à soumettre un dossier pour la programmation 2017. Nous encourageons les projets qui portent un regard critique et innovateur sur l’art et qui ouvrent les frontières entre les différentes disciplines artistiques. Pour susciter la production artistique visuelle albertaine, notre jury portera une attention particulières aux dossiers provenant de l’Alberta.

Les dossiers seront révisés par un jury impartial et un cachet suivant la grille tarifaire CARFAC sera remis aux artistes exposants.

Artist Call for Submission

One on One Gallery invites artists and designers to apply for an exhibition in any media. The proposed exhibition is scheduled for January 28 to February 23, 2017 with a reception held on February 16, 2017. Proposals should consider the size and dimensions of the gallery space. One on One Gallery is an integral part of the Visual Communications Program at Medicine Hat College. Our Bachelor of Applied Arts (Visual Communications) degree program is one of a kind, in that we offer a blend of both fine arts and design. We use our One on One gallery as a teaching tool to enhance our student’s education by inviting professional artists and designers to showcase their work and bring contemporary and exciting ideas to our community. The gallery has over 2400 running feet of wall space, a state of the art lighting system, tall ceilings, and hardwood floors. It’s a very professional, clean, and exciting space.

An artist fee of $3000.00 will be awarded to the selected candidate. All travel, shipping costs and arrangements (delivery both ways) are to be covered by the selected candidate.

The artist must be in attendance for the reception where they will be required to give an artist talk. They are also required to fulfill studio visits either the day before or after the reception date. These stipulations will be based on a contractual agreement and must be fulfilled before the artist fee is awarded.

Before the end of the day of December 9th, 2016. Our visiting artist committee will review submission in early December. You will receive an acknowledgement of your submission.

Centre [3] is proud to continue its residency Programme for emerging artists. Continuing with our efforts to promote and encourage art-making practices; Centre [3] is offering two residencies, commencing December 2016 and continuing through to mid-February 2017. Following the Residency, the artists will be showcased in the main exhibition space of the Centre. (Feb 23 to April 7, 2017.)

Nuit Blanche Toronto – Call For Submissions

Calling all Toronto-based and Canadian-based artists!

Nuit Blanche Toronto is now accepting submissions to the Open Call
Project program for the event’s 12th edition, happening on September
30, 2017 from sunset to sunrise.

Open Call Projects

The Open Call Projects program is an opportunity for artists to be
guided and mentored by a Nuit Blanche Toronto curator and have a
project produced and funded by the City of Toronto.

The impressive calibre and diversity of Open Call Projects featured at
the event over the years includes artists such as: Ame Henderson,
Brandy Leary/Anandam Dancetheatre, Eleanor King, Faith La Rocque,
Kelly Mark, Labspace Studio, Rhonda Weppler & Trevor Mahovsky,
VSVSVS and Workparty.

To mark Canada’s 150th anniversary of confederation, Nuit Blanche
Toronto has created an overarching theme for the entire 2017 event
focusing on this major milestone in Canada’s history as a nation,
entitled Nuit Blanche 2017: Many Possible Futures. All participating
Nuit Blanche Toronto 2017 curators have been encouraged to look
forward to the many possible futures of Canada in their curatorial
visions, working with artists to address notions of Identity and
Nationhood. Possible perspectives include Migration, Displacement,
Colonialism, Power and Privilege, Settlement, the Natural Landscape,
Distance, Exploration, Adaptation, and Reconciliation.

This year the Open Call Projects will give up to four artists the
opportunity to be part of two City-produced exhibitions.

The two exhibitions accepting Open Call submissions for 2017 are:

Taking to the Streets – For a Possible Future
Curator: Barbara Fischer

Streets are complex sites where pedestrian life meets car culture,
where public and private intermingle, and where commerce and
consumption, ostentation and privation are in daily exchange, if not
confrontation. Taking to the Streets – For a Possible Future looks at the
ways in which the ‘street’ as a medium has served the manifestation of
social action and interrogation by artists, from graffiti to protest,
conceptual interventions to public disruptions.

Barbara Fischer is the executive director/chief curator of the Justina M.
Barnicke Gallery at Hart House and interim director of the University of
Toronto Art Centre. She is also senior lecturer of Curatorial Studies in
the Department of Art at the University of Toronto. She has curated
numerous major exhibitions of contemporary art and its histories in

Dream Time: We All Have Stories
Curator: Karen Alexander

Dream Time: We All Have Stories focuses on the challenges and
consequences of individuals and communities sharing urban spaces
and places, together. Exploring themes of migration, memory, hybridity
and transformation, the exhibition looks forward not toward a future
which throws everything together into a magical multicultural melting
pot, but rather one that sharply focuses on progressive ideas of
nationality and inclusion through a series of interventions,
investigations and explorations.

Karen Alexander is an independent film and moving image curator,
advisor and researcher and has worked with and for the Royal College
of Art, and the British Film Institute. She has acted as a consultant and
programmer for a wide range of festivals institutions and galleries,
including Film London, the Watershed Bristol, Tate, Birkbeck, Iniva, the
Serpentine Gallery, The British Library and the ICA London. Her areas
of expertise are UK artists’ film and video, feminist and post-colonial
politics of representation, gender and sexuality. Karen was appointed
Associate Fellow at Warwick University in the Film and Television
Studies department in 2015 and has been a trustee of the London-
based arts commissioning body Artangel since 2004.

Each curator will select one or two Open Call Projects for their
exhibition in consultation with the City of Toronto. Funding and
production support is provided by the City of Toronto.

Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition (Charlottenborg Forårsudstilling) is one of the most important open submission exhibitions in Europe, and has been held annually in Copenhagen since 1857. It originated as an exhibition showing new works by Danish artists and now features participants from many countries. Over the years it has included early works by such renowned international figures as Alvar Aalto, Per Kirkeby, Olafur Eliasson, Superflex and many others. The exhibition is organised by Charlottenborg Fonden.

Submissions
Submissions to the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition 2017 can be made by artists of any nationality and country of residence, aged over 18 years. Submitted artworks may fall into a wide range of genres associated with art, architecture and design—including painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, photography, video, film, performance, design, craft, animation, sound and new media. Submissions are made digitally in the period December 1–22, 2016.

Jury
The jury of the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition is made up of artists and other art and design professionals from the Nordic countries and beyond. It is intended that the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition 2017 will include a broad range of competencies from the fields of art, architecture and design, and the jurors have been selected accordingly. In 2017 the jury will be Alex da Corte (artist, US), Torben Ribe (artist, Denmark) Stig L. Jury award
As well as selecting the works, the jury also nominates five artists for one special jury award: The Solo Award. The award recognizes overall artistic quality and present-day relevance, and is granted on the opening day of the exhibition. The Solo Award is accompanied by an invitation to exhibit at the following Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition 2018.

Exhibition
The exhibition is held at Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen, one of the largest and most beautiful spaces for contemporary art in Europe, and the dates of the next exhibition are February 2–March 11, 2017. The exhibition allows a considerable number of artists to participate in a major international project and has over the years provided the first significant platform for many emerging artists, while also presenting important new pieces by more established figures. Charlottenborg Fonden publishes a richly illustrated catalog that includes all exhibiting artists.

Open call for prizes and artist residencies
October 3–November 17, 2016

Up until November 17, 2016, artists from the Global South and from Portuguese-speaking countries can enter their new or existing artworks in any language or theme to participate in the 20th Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil. The curators in charge of artist selection will choose as many as 50 artists to take part in art shows, video screenings, performances, meetings with artists, public program activities, educational actions, and publication launches set to take place during the Festival.

The featured artists and groups will compete for two types of prizes designated by two different juries. For the first time, the Festival will award three Acquisition Awards to artists with video works, each for a total sum of 25,000 BRL (subject to tax in accordance with the current Brazilian legislation). The works will become part of the Sesc Brazilian Art Collection. An international jury of contemporary art professionals will indicate the Acquisition Awards.

Another jury of delegates of the Festival’s residency institutions partners will grant five Artistic Residency Prizes to be used in the two years after the Festival (January 2018 / September 2019), for a period of eight weeks, in artistic residency institutions that are partners of the Festival. Airfare, accommodation, and per diems are included. Works contemplated with Artistic Residency Prizes will become part of the Videobrasil Collection.

 

20th Festival artist residencies
Relationships with local environment and community are the focus of A-I-R Laboratory, the residency program of the Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw, Poland, which encourages artists to present their work at public spaces, for increased involvement from the local population.

At the residency program of the Kyoto Art Center, in Japan, various art genres come together to connect with the city’s tradition and the heavily technological and industrial daily lives of its citizens.

In Salvador, Brazil, Residence Vila Sul, offered by Goethe-Institut, focuses on the South America-Africa connection and on conceptualizing the Global South, featuring ideal facilities for exhibitions and activities in various formats.

Cultural exchange between artists, the university community, and the public are the targets of the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, affiliated with the Ohio State University, underscoring its commitment to feeding creative expression through its residency program.

Finally, Res Artis, an association devoted to fostering artist residencies with over 500 collaborators in more than 70 countries, will enable, for the first time, a collaboration with a Caribbean institution, yet to be confirmed.

 

Who can participate
The 20th Festival accepts applications by artists or groups of artists who were born or reside for five years or more in the countries belonging to the Global South and countries of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP). For this open call, the macro-region at hand will comprise countries in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia (except Japan), Eastern and Western Europe, the Middle East, Oceania, and the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries—the latter being one of the new additions to this 20th edition. Apart from Brazil, the CPLP comprises: Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, and East Timor.

The magazine invites proposals for new work to be developed by artists and writers in collaboration with Triple Canopy’s editors for inclusion in our newest issue, Vanitas, which launched in September and will continue to unfurl in the coming year.

In an age defined by extremes of finitude and excess, deprivation and luxury, what is vanity? How do we register our own transitoriness even as we strive against decay and senescence, by way of cryogenics labs, biotechnology innovations, spa treatments, and the hoarding of material goods and digital files? This issue explores contemporary meditations on mortality as well as the delights, delusions, and pressures of fleshly existence, and ranges from the much-heralded “end of death” to collective processes of aging to the pursuit of impossible—or nearly impossible—forms of beauty. The name is taken from the opulent, hyperrealist still lifes popularized by Dutch and Flemish painters in the seventeenth century, which symbolize the brevity of human life and essential emptiness of earthly pursuits, even as they advertise the artist’s ability to fix time. These paradoxical images prompt us to consider how and why we strive to overcome death while reminding us of our certain mortality.

Le Festival des Architectures Vives est un parcours architectural à destination du grand public, qui permet de découvrir ou redécouvrir des sites emblématiques de la ville de Montpellier et de la Ville de La Grande Motte grâce à des installations éphémères créées par de jeunes équipes d’architectes.

Le FAV vise à valoriser le travail de cette jeune génération qui propose, invente et expérimente et pour qui le FAV est généralement le premier projet construit. Il s’agit de créer un dialogue entre ces “architectures vives” et le grand public en valorisant le patrimoine existant et en l’ouvrant au plus grand nombre.

Le Festival est visité par un large public chaque année, en 2016, il a réunit plus de 20 000 visiteurs. 75 classes, représentant près de 2 000 enfants, de la première section de maternelle allant jusqu’au CM2 qui ont pris part à un programme d’encadrement autour de l’architecture et du patrimoine.

Pour sa douzième édition, le Festival des Architectures Vives à Montpellier se déroulera du 13 au 18 juin 2017 et la cinquième édition du festival à La Grande Motte se déroulera du 17 au 25 juin 2017. Le festival aura pour thématique l’Emotion

Overheated technological development considered at all stages has proven costly to the planet; barely established synergy is getting dissociated again, democracy as “best of the systems” seems to no longer be sustainable; we accept shaky, precarious and temporary positions; while seeking personalised alliances, we commit ourselves to loyalty towards communication procedures.

How does contemporary art reflect/express/imply these processes? How does artistic practice outline this changeable position framing it in a communication form—between installation and action, concept and artistic manifestation?

WRO Biennale: about
The WRO Media Art Biennale is the major forum for new media art in Poland, and one of the leading international contemporary art events in Europe. Since its inception in 1989, WRO has beenpresenting art forms created using new media for artistic expression and communication exploring current creative territories and building a critical perspective toward emerging issues in culture, art, society and technology.

The previous edition of the Biennale—WRO 2015: Test Exposure—was held at ten sites around the city of Wrocław: museums, galleries, department store, new building of the University Library before its opening to the public, private flat and public space, where the works of over 250 artists were shown. The exhibitions, concerts, performances, video projections, installations and conferences were attended by over 100,000 visitors.

Cove Park Funded Residencies 2017
Applications are now invited for Cove Park’s Crafts, Literature and Visual Arts residency programmes in 2017. These opportunities are available between May and September next year. National and international artists at all stages in their careers are welcome to apply. Additional residency strands will run this year, including residencies for early-career artists supported by the Fenton Arts Trust.

Artists on residency are given the time, space and financial support to concentrate upon the development of their work. Cove Park provides a supportive context in which artists can devise new projects, experiment and engage with those working in different fields or with different approaches to their practice. Participating artists receive a fee, on-site accommodation and, when relevant, a private studio.

Artist Residencies

The White Water Gallery accepts proposals for “micro” residencies from 1 -3 weeks in length. These residencies are open to Canadian and International artists or groups interested in engaging our Northern Ontario community. Artist fees and travel are negotiated on a case by case basis and special funding may need to be secured in order to accommodate some projects.

Artists interested in applying for a micro-residency are asked to submit a detailed proposal to the White Water Gallery’s Programming Committee. Priority will be given to proposals that compliment the Gallery’s mandate and involve partnerships and collaboration through art creation, incubators, workshops and research.

All proposals must include:

  • Artist’s CV
  • One page Artist or Curatorial Statement
  • One page Project Description, outlining the scope of the project and any specific requirements (spatial, technical, time of year, etc)

Atelier Topaz – résidence 
Opasatika, Ontario, Canada

Le lieu
Situés au cœur de la forêt boréale, les Ateliers Topaz sont à la fois un lieu de retraite et un centre de création pour artistes, toutes disciplines confondues. L’endroit parfait pour la réflexion, l’évasion. Le groupement d’édifices fait 900 mètres carrés et repose sur 14 hectares face à la route Transcanadienne. Il donne sur un étang de deux hectares. Topaz c’est la « Route 66 » dans le nord de l’Ontario. L’endroit, modeste et nostalgique, rappelle aussi les grandes épopées de la colonisation francophone de l’Ontario. Ces studios de création ou cette résidence d’artistes, endroit idéal pour les arts visuels, sont situés au centre du Canada, à mi-chemin entre l’Atlantique et le Pacifique, là où les étoiles deviennent les topazes de la nuit.

Ce qu’on offre
D’abord l’espace et, l’espace de travail déterminés selon les besoins de l’artiste. Les espaces polyvalents permettent d’y faire de la peinture, de la sculpture, de l’installation, etc. L’atelier de menuiserie, le Bar à clou, est équipé des outils de base. Un magasin d’objets trouvés est disponible autant pour l’inspiration que pour l’utilisation dans une œuvre. Le peintre apporte ses pinceaux, le musicien son instrument et l’écrivain son ordi.

Les personnes qui séjournent aux Ateliers Topaz jouissent de l’accès à la cuisine et sont responsables de préparer leurs repas. Toutefois Laurent peut aussi leur cuisiner de petits plats typiquement canadiens-français aux besoins ou aux désirs. 

Topaz possède deux suites avec lit double et une chambre avec lit simple. Chacune possède sa salle de toilette avec douche. Ces installations évoquent admirablement le style des années 1960. 

Pour la baignade, le Lac des Cœurs se situe à deux kilomètres à l’est. Pour le canotage ou la pèche, la rivière Opasatika est deux kilomètres à l’ouest. Pour se déplacer, il y a de vieux vélos ou la marche. Pour un frais très raisonnable, votre hôte peut aussi vous conduire ou organiser un déplacement vers Kapuskasing à l’est ou vers Hearst à l’ouest. 

Les matériaux d’artistes ne sont pas disponibles dans la région. Il est donc important de faire vos achats avant votre séjour, à moins que vous travailliez avec des matériaux que l’on peut se procurer dans des magasins ordinaires ou même en nature.

Call to Artists for Expression of Interest (EOI)

Terry Fox Commemorative Artwork

The London Arts Council is seeking to commission an artist or artist-led team to create a permanent new creation to be integrated into the Terry Fox Parkway at Greenway Park. The selected artist(s) will be expected to complete the project by its unveiling date of September 18, 2017.

This project is funded by the City of London Public Art Program and administered by the London Arts Council on behalf of the City of London’s Culture Office. The selected artist(s) will be expected to work with the London Arts Council and representation from the Terry Fox Foundation.

Artwork Goals
The Terry Fox Commemorative Artwork is a tribute art project to Terry Fox and his legacy to Canadians. It is intended that this permanent artwork will be unique, innovative, and reflective. The piece may be abstract and artists will be encouraged to create a piece that is not a bust or statue of Terry Fox.

The goals of the project include:

Enhancing the local park environment and enriching the space for the enjoyment of all, while immersing individuals in the story of Terry Fox and his legacy.
Providing a unique space in London for reflection and thoughtful commemoration.
Engaging children and young adults in the importance of civic involvement, volunteerism, and research.
Sharing the story of Terry Fox and his dream of finding a cure for cancer.
Celebrating an iconic figure in Canadian history and connecting to Canada’s 150th Anniversary of Confederation through the medium of public art.

PROJECT SUMMARY

Historical Context
Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope on April 12, 1980, at the age of 22, running across Canada in the hopes of raising money for cancer research. Although the Cancer Society of Canada was initially skeptical, London’s Ron Calhoun convinced the Society to support Fox. With a fundraising goal of $1 for every Canadian, Fox began his run from St. John’s, Newfoundland. When he crossed into Ottawa on Canada Day, he was greeted by Prime-Minister Pierre Trudeau and thousands of donors, giving him the motivation to continue. Unfortunately, his medical condition had worsened over the course of the run and when he reached Toronto he had an inflamed ankle, cysts, and severe shin-splints. On July 17, 1980, Fox ran along Dundas Street in London, and an honour guard of Londoners followed him close behind and thousands of people lined the street. London was his last westward destination before continuing north to Thunder Bay, where on September 1, Fox announced that he could no longer continue. On June 28, 1981, Fox passed away, having raised millions of dollars for cancer research.

London’s first annual Terry Fox Run took place in Greenway Park in 1981 and had volunteer and community support from local individuals, City of London police force, soldiers from The Royal Canadian Regiment at Wolseley Barracks, St. John’s Ambulance paramedics, and politicians. Since the run began in London, it has been estimated that London has raised over $2.5 million. Today, the annual Terry Fox Run has been the largest annual single-day fundraiser in the world.

There are numerous public art memorials to Terry Fox. This project will not aim to recreate or duplicate these artworks, but will instead focus on a new approach to commemoration.

Design Parameters
Artist applications will be reviewed on the basis of professional qualifications and experience and other criteria listed below. An artwork proposal is not requested at this time. The selected artist will work with the London Arts Council staff to determine design parameters (i.e. materials used, size, engineering or lighting if required, etc.)

Location Description
The Terry Fox Parkway begins just east of Springbank Gardens and continues through the length of Greenway Park to the Curnoe Tunnel. Over 30,000 people from various demographic groups use the Terry Fox Parkway each month and the annual Terry Fox Run takes place on the parkway in September. The Terry Fox Commemorative Artwork will be placed near Springbank Gardens, near the parking lot and public washrooms.

Budget
Up to $90,000.00 is the total amount available for all related expenses of this Public Art project, including (but not limited to) artist fees, site preparation and restoration, technical consultation, travel to the site, fabrication, insurance, installation, permit fees, documentation, all applicable taxes, etc.

Timeline
The selected artist(s) will be expected to comply with the project’s general timeline dates, as highlighted below:

October 2016-January 2017: Artist Selection Phase
February-April 2017: Design Phase and Contract Approvals
May-August 2017: Artist Creation and Installation
September 18, 2017: Artwork Unveiling and Date of Terry Fox Run

(RFPQ) Functional Art Commission: Waterloo Park Harvest Tables

The City of Waterloo invites experienced, professional artists or a team of professional artists to submit their qualifications for the opportunity to develop new public art work. The total all-inclusive budget for all components of this public art project is $45,000.

Waterloo Park is the premier park in the City of Waterloo. Often called the “jewel of the city”, Waterloo Park boasts 45 hectares (111 acres) of prime parkland, with a multitude of active and passive uses.

A vision for the long-term development of this park is provided by the Waterloo Park Master Plan. This vision is of a people-oriented gathering place for the entire community, with venues that offer a variety of unstructured recreational and cultural experiences. The Master Plan outlines an ambitious plan that is intended to direct the development of the park over the next 20 years and beyond. This document provides a context as well as the guiding principles that will shape the park including plans for the area known as the Community Room. As part of this plan, two community harvest tables will be commissioned as part of the park’s development.

The commissioned community harvest tables will be located in the heart of the Community Room. This outdoor space includes an area of 775m2 that is surrounded by ornate pear trees. Surfaces include grass with border paving. This area will be used as collective seating for community gatherings including passive activities like reading, sitting, and eating. This iconic green space is intended to offer opportunities for citizens to congregate at a central community table that incorporates elements of the surrounding green space as well as the park’s on-going history into the design. These spaces are available to use by the community year-round.

The selected artistic work will reflect the long and varied history of Waterloo Park and the experiences of its users. The artist(s) selected for the project will be responsible for developing and implementing an artistic work for the Waterloo Park Community Room harvest tables. This will include the concept, design, fabrication, and installation of the two community harvest tables. The design for the community harvest tables will be inclusive of all hardware, seating, table top, and fixtures.

WinterStations Design Competition

WinterStations is now embarking on its third-year, opening an international design competition to bring temporary public art installations to The Beaches, exhibited to celebrate Toronto’s winter waterfront landscape.

This year we are expecting to include up to six lifeguard stands, including an additional three by invited universities, across Balmy, Kew and Ashbridges Bay beaches located in the heart of the Beach community, south of Queen Street East, between Woodbine and Victoria Park Avenues. These utilitarian structures are to be used as the armature for temporary installations, which will need to be able to withstand the rigours of Toronto winter weather. The exhibition is to run February 20 until March 27, 2017.

This is a single-stage open international competition, welcoming artists, designers, architects and landscape architects to submit concept proposals for WinterStations’ temporary artwork installations.
Theme

WinterStations 2017 theme: Catalyst : Converting one form or substance into another.

The finger that tips the first domino over. The flap of butterfly’s wing that that sets off a chain of chaotic, unpredictable reactions. The theme for WinterStations’ third year is Catalyst. In 2017, this seems especially fitting in a time of an international political, social and cultural search for a better way forward. This winter, we ask artists and designers to unearth and intervene in such a way as to open up the landscape, as well as the minds of those who come to view and interact with the installations. We ask that proposals seek to disassemble and re-shape our notions of Toronto’s waterfront, with particular attention to the sand and materials strewn across the beach.

The installations this year will also be a catalyst for change: We would like to see less waste and more re-use. Designers should consider how their materials can be repurposed and recycled; we are excited to see proposals that evolve into future iterations, as on-going research and design projects. Entrants should address in their proposals a post-WinterStations’ life, including de-commissioning / removal and the potential opportunities they see for their design, such as possible new sites and / or new objects.

There is no limit to the size of the installation, but please note that included in the jurors’ instructions will be durability and constructability. Installations cannot exceed the total cost outlined.

The jury may choose to pick up to ten proposals, in order of choice. The WinterStations team will review these proposals to determine constructability. From this list we are fundraising to build up to six installations.

Winning teams will be provided with an allowance for travel and accommodation to spend time in Toronto during the installation and the activities surrounding the opening, February 17 – 20, 2017. In 2016, this included an opening party at The Gladstone Hotel. These events provide opportunities for citizens of Toronto to engage directly with the designers. Members of the design team should expect to meet with media to discuss their designs and ideas.

This year, local design and art institutions will be represented by The University of Toronto Daniels Faculty of Architecture Landscape and Design, Humber College School of Design and the University of Waterloo School of Architecture, with teams of students designing and fabricating installations for three stands.

The Lifeguard Stands

The lifeguard stands are essentially identical. They are sturdy steel pipe structures to which the installation is to be fastened. The method of fastening is up to each competitor, however it may not result in any damage to or modification of the structure. As this is the off-season for use, there are few restrictions on covering the stations; the three exceptions are: the shepherds’ hook, the lifesaving ring and any emergency signage.

Please assume minimal security during the event and the possibility of vandalism or simply wear and tear from the curious. There will be no power or utilities available. Proposals should indicate how materials may be disposed of or recycled at the end of the display period. Please designate on your entry if your design is specific to one particular station.
Selection and Approval Process

Once the Jury has met and determined a short list of entrants, a technical review of the finalists will be conducted in order to ensure the constructability of the projects. Those on the shortlist will be assigned a construction team lead by a project manager, chosen by the organizers to produce the appropriate working drawings in order to ensure that the construction is feasible and within budget. This collaboration will take place from December 2016 through to installation. The final winners will be announced January 8, 2016.

All construction will be carried out in Toronto by firms selected by the organizers and overseen by the entrant, the project manager and the construction team. The entrants chosen to participate in this competition agree to work to the schedule established by the organizers.
