Présenté par VIVA! et Inter, art actuel, le Concours jeune critique vise à encourager l’analyse textuelle des pratiques performatives en offrant une plateforme professionnelle aux critiques de la relève (35 ans et moins). Les critiques émergents sont invités à rédiger un compte rendu analytique sur une ou plusieurs performances présentées dans le cadre de la 3e édition de VIVA! Art Action. L’auteur gagnant sera rémunéré et recevra un encadrement professionnel pour la publication de son texte dans la prochaine édition d’Inter, art actuel, (janvier 2012) ainsi que sur le site Web de VIVA! Prestation en public et création d’œuvre d’art

1-    Contexte

Pour une deuxième année consécutive, la Fédération culturelle acadienne de la Nouvelle-Écosse (FéCANE) souhaite reconnaître une personne ou un organisme qui a joué un rôle important pour le domaine artistique et culturel de l’Acadie de la Nouvelle-Écosse lors d’un dîner-gala pendant le forum en marge de l’AGA en novembre 2011.

2-    Sommaire général

·         Création, intégration, vitalité… ensemble vers la réussite est un forum sur les arts et la communauté organisé conjointement par la FéCANE et  l’Association acadienne des artistes de la Nouvelle-Écosse (AAANÉ).  Dans le but d’intégrer la pratique des arts visuels dans les activités du forum, la FéCANE et l’AAANÉ sont à la recherche d’un artiste en arts visuels prêt à participer au forum et à produire une œuvre  inspirée des ateliers de discussions de la fin de semaine, complétée pour le souper gala le samedi 19 novembre à 18h, moment où l’œuvre sera remise au récipiendaire.

·         L’artiste choisi devra participer au forum et s’inspirer des discussions afin de produire une œuvre unique et originale.  L’œuvre produite doit par conséquent être tangible et appartenir au registre des arts visuels.

·         Dans le cadre de la réalisation de cette œuvre, l’artiste travaillera sous la supervision du directeur général de la FéCANE.

3-    La proposition et l’œuvre

–          Les candidatures des artistes doivent avoir été reçues au bureau de la FéCANE au plus tard le mardi 11 octobre et doivent inclure :
o   Une courte description de leur projet et de leur démarche artistique (150 mots maximum).
o   Une courte biographie (100 mots maximum)
o   Un portfolio de cinq à sept images (sept images maximum) dans le médium proposé
§  Les propositions électroniques sont acceptées.
§  Si l’artiste souhaite récupérer son dossier, il doit l’indiquer clairement ET fournir une enveloppe pré-affranchie.

–          La proposition soumise doit être réalisable au cours de la fin de semaine et ne doit pas prévoir modifier l’infrastructure de l’hôtel en aucune façon.
–          L’œuvre produite doit être tangible, transportable immédiatement et appartenir au registre des arts visuels.  Elle doit être complétée sur place et au plus tard le samedi 19 novembre à 18h.
–          Les projets qui incluront des scènes explicites de violence ou de sexualité seront rejetés.
–          L’évaluation des candidatures sera faite par l’équipe de la FéCANE et la décision sera annoncée au plus tard le 17 octobre 2011.
–          L’artiste et son matériel devront être présents pour toute la durée du forum, soit du vendredi 18 novembre de 12h à 21h et le samedi 19 novembre 2011 de 9h à 19h.
–          L’artiste préserve son droit d’auteur sur l’œuvre, la FéCANE pourra utiliser des photos de l’image à des fins promotionnelles, commerciales ou autre. Le récipiendaire deviendra propriétaire de l’œuvre.
–          Le cachet sera remis à l’artiste lorsque l’œuvre sera remise au personnel de la FéCANE, à l’intérieur du délai prévu.

4-    Qui peut soumettre sa candidature et compensation

Tout membre de l’Association acadienne des artistes de la Nouvelle-Écosse peut soumettre sa candidature.  Pour savoir comment devenir membre, veuillez consulter le site web de l’AAANÉ au www.aaane.ca sous l’onglet « adhésion ».

5-    Compensation

Transport et hébergement seront remboursés à l’artiste selon les modalités prévues par le guide administratif de la FéCANE (disponible en ligne à www.fecane.com).

L’artiste pourra assister à la table ronde et participer aux activités sans avoir à acquitter les frais d’inscription.  L’artiste bénéficiera des repas sur place gratuitement.

Le cachet sera négocié avec l’artiste en fonction du financement reçu.

Tous les documents de candidature devront avoir été reçus au bureau de la FéCANE au plus tard mardi le 11 octobre 2011 à 9h.

Un catalyseur est une substance qui accélère la réaction chimique entre
deux substances qui seraient autrement inertes, sans lui-même être
consommé. Ce principe de base est au coeur du raisonnement derrière ce
vernissage d’art d’une soirée. La mise en scène d’une exposition d’art
dans un laboratoire de génie biochimique à l’Université d’Ottawa, le
spectacle Catalyseur espère susciter un dialogue entre les sciences et les
arts. C’est une opportunité exceptionnelle pour les artistes de présenter
leur travail dans le cadre d’un laboratoire fonctionnel.

Le but est d’exhiber des oeuvres qui profitent d’un environnement de
grandetaille, équipé avec tous les dispositifs d’un véritable laboratoire
scientifique. Cela comprend des échafaudages d’acier élaborer, un plafond
cathédrale, ainsi d’une variétés d’équipements scientifiques. L’état
éphémère de ce spectacle exige que toutes les pièces soient montées et
démontées dans un temps cours : ce vernissage prendra place pendant une
seule soirée. Les oeuvres présenter lors de ce vernissage doivent
démontrer une relation entre les arts et les sciences, ou traiter un sujet
scientifique comme : la nanotechnologie, la régénération des nerfs, etc.

Le Regroupement des arts interdisciplinaires du Québec (RAIQ) lance un appel de propositions pour la seconde édition de son colloque bi-annuel qui vise une meilleure compréhension des pratiques interdisciplinaires. L’événement qui proposera des conférences, des déambulations, une œuvre sur terrasse et un projet de correspondance en ligne prendra place les 25 et 26 mai 2012 à la Maison de la Culture Côte-des-neiges.

Colloque – 2
Les territoires de l’interdisciplinaire : art et environnement

Aujourd’hui, de plus en plus d’artistes cherchent à inscrire leur démarche non pas dans l’espace clos de la galerie, du centre d’artistes ou de la scène, mais dans un environnement public, tissu urbain ou communauté rurale, espace achalandé, lieu naturel ou abandonné. C’est le cas tant pour des artistes autochtones que non autochtones qui travaillent avec l’environnement. Souvent, l’art qui se déploie dans l’espace public est à la croisée de plusieurs disciplines, artistiques et non artistiques. On parle de plus en plus de déambulations, de manœuvres, d’art dans la rue, installation éphémère, d’art public participatif. Des artistes ont une démarche inspirée de leur relation avec la nature, qu’elle soit sauvage, saccagée ou abîmée alors que d’autres s’interrogent sur la possibilité même que l’art puisse encore parler de la «nature».

Pour approfondir les rapports des artistes à l’environnement, le RAIQ organise un colloque qui s’étendra sur deux jours en mai 2012 à la Maison de la culture Côte-des-neiges (MCCDN). Ce colloque proposera une réflexion critique sur les multiples territoires de l’interdisciplinaire. Comment les artistes intègrent-ils l’environnement à leur processus de création? Quelles sont les problématiques spécifiques quand l’artiste inscrit son œuvre dans un territoire donné? Quatre axes d’étude ont déjà été identifiés, notamment :

Création, temps, environnement
Comment les artistes représentent, créent, imaginent les relations complexes entre l’art, le présent, le passé et le futur, l’histoire, l’implication sociale et la place des humains dans l’environnement?

Territoires peuplés ou abandonnés, urbains, ruraux ou naturels
Comment les artistes investissent-ils les différents territoires? Quelles sont les manœuvres, installations, interventions privilégiées par les artistes, les architectes, les centres d’artistes pour questionner via l’art nos relations à l’environnement?

Art, environnement, éthique et implication sociale
Comment les artistes lient-ils art, environnement et éthique? L’art qui se préoccupe d’environnement est-il toujours un acte de résistance?

Art public et public de l’art
L’art qui s’inscrit dans un environnement «non artistique» rejoint-il mieux le public? Le public qui prend part à un art intégré à l’environnement est-il plus réceptif au processus créatif? Est-ce que les artistes privilégient les expériences ludiques (parades, manifestations de groupe…) pour mieux rejoindre le public? De quel type d’art est-il alors question?

PROPOSITIONS / TYPES
En regard des quatre axes identifiés, le RAIQ sollicite vos propositions qui devront s’inscrire dans l’un des volets suivants :

o  Conférences et tables rondes
Le RAIQ sollicite des propositions de conférences (solo, duo ou de groupe) portant sur les axes d’étude préalablement identifiés.

o  Déambulations autour de la Maison de la culture Côte-des-neiges
Le RAIQ sollicite des propositions de déambulations ou de manœuvres autour de la MCCDN.

o  Projet Correspondance en ligne
Le RAIQ sollicite la participation de deux artistes interdisciplinaires (l’un autochtone, l’autre non) à un projet de Correspondance en ligne. Les artistes devront s’engager à échanger de novembre à mai sur leur démarche artistique et leur rapport à l’environnement. La correspondance des deux artistes sera affichée en temps réel sur le site Web du RAIQ et les visiteurs du site pourront prendre part à la discussion. Ces échanges permettront de lier une activité de réflexion continue à un événement ponctuel. Au colloque, les deux artistes viendront commenter l’expérience de la correspondance en regard du développement de leur pratique.

Les artistes peuvent proposer leur candidature en duo (artiste autochtone et artiste non autochtone) ou en solo (artiste autochtone ou non). Les artistes devront expliquer pourquoi ils aimeraient participer au projet de correspondance. Le RAIQ se réserve la possibilité de jumeler deux artistes pour ce projet.

o  Œuvre interdisciplinaire sur la terrasse de la Maison de la culture Côte-des-neiges
Le RAIQ et la MCCDN invitent un-e artiste de la région de Montréal à proposer une œuvre interdisciplinaire qui se déploiera sur la terrasse de la MCCDN de mai à novembre 2012. L’artiste doit s’engager à participer à quelques rencontres de médiation culturelle avec des groupes de la communauté de Côte-des-neiges.

TSV Annual Call for Submissions

TSV is a not-for-profit artist-run centre for the production, education and dissemination of video by artists and community organizations. Since 1971, TSV has made access to the means of communication its priority, providing a diverse community of video practitioners media-arts related development through workshops, seminars and classes, as well as offering a space for the creation and exhibition of video art. Through its public programming, TSV has advanced the understanding and appreciation of video produced by various community-based groups and numerous internationally recognized artists, such as Michael Balser, John Greyson, Vera Frenkel, Richard Fung, Nancy Nicol, and Lisa Steele and Kim Tomczak. Recently, TSV has presented works by Abbas Akhavan, Ursula Biemann, Harry Dodge, Alison S.M. Kobayashi, Alex Morrison, Steve Reinke and James Richards, Jayce Salloum, Mark Tribe, Ming Wong, Jin-me Yoon, among others.
TSV is seeking video art that expands understanding of the medium and explores the representations that are constructed through its technological processes. We are eager to hear from artists and curators critically engaged with the social, philosophical, and political implications of video in its various forms: video art, video installation, lens-based and non-lens-based digital animation, and video-related photography and works-on-paper.

Trout Unlimited Canada’s 2012 Artist-of-the-Year Search You are invited to submit artwork for the 20th annual juried selection of Trout Unlimited Canada’s Artist of the Year. The winning art piece will be utilized throughout Canada as part of TUC’s national program of fundraising for coldwater conservation endeavours.
Trout Unlimited is looking for a landscape painting in recognition of TUC’s commitment to cold water conservation and protection. Competition rules and background information are attached and on our web site at http://www.tucanada.org/TUC_artist_winners.shtml
The successful artist will receive a $2,000 cash prize with the winning artwork being donated to Trout Unlimited Canada. In addition the artist will receive a receipt for Canadian tax purposes for the amount the original piece sells for at auction at TUC’s Calgary National Conservation Dinner & Auction which will be held on March 22, 2012. Our Calgary dinner is the largest and most successful coldwater conservation event in North America. The Artist of the Year originals have averaged a selling price of over $3,500 during this time.
Further promotion of the winning artwork will include its use on our 2012 dinner programs which will be used at fundraising dinners across the country. As well a signed and numbered limited edition print (60 pieces plus 25 remarque’s and 25 artist proofs), will be created. The prints will be sold at our fundraising events as well as being used as donations to other events. TUC’s website will feature the winning piece and artist on our website as well as being presented in our newsletter “Currents” which is found in “Fly Fusion” magazine. This combination of TUC’s promotion will mean that the artist will be featured prominently to thousands of committed conservationists while at the same time the artwork itself will raise significant funds for coldwater conservation.
Judging will be done in two stages. The preliminary stage, art is to be submitted as a photo or digitized image of your original piece of artwork (or artworks as an artist may submit up to 3 pieces for consideration). The initial judging will be done on the submitted images and the top ten artists selected will be asked to submit their original piece(s) for the final jury selection.

Invitation to Submit Art for a Juried Competition
Invitation to submit art to Trout Unlimited Canada, 2012 Fund Development Program –20th in a series –
Terms under which art is to be submitted:
• The winning piece will be selected by a jury. The selection will be done in two stages – first from the submitted images and then from original art requested for the final submission. (see below)
• The winning piece will be considered a donation to Trout Unlimited Canada for use as part of TUC’s dinner program. As such, a tax receipt will be issued to the artist for the amount of the sale.
• A prize of $2000.00 will be awarded to the winning artist
• The winning selection will be produced as a limited edition of signed lithographic reproductions. This edition will be for 110 prints including the following:
• A signed and numbered limited edition of 60 to be sold at our fundraising events and to the general public
• A conservation edition of 25 artist Remarque’s to be donated to Trout Unlimited Canada for a portfolio of cover art
• The artist receives 25 artist proof prints
• Artwork will be reproduced on program covers and other like material for Trout Unlimited Canada fund development events held across Canada. The winning piece will be featured on the Trout Unlimited Canada website and our newsletter “Currents”.
• Funds from sale of the art will be used for conservation, protection and education with respect to cold-water environments.
Instructions for submission of art:
• Art is to depict and highlight scenes from landscapes and riparian habitats.
• All art will be submitted as either a photo of the original or a digital image of the original. Digital images may be submitted to kdavidson [arobas] tucanada [point] org. (Please clearly mark subject line in the email – Artist of the Year)
• The original art will be a suggested minimum image size of 16 x 20 inches (405 x 512 mm), or proportionally larger.
• No original art will be submitted for the first round of judging.
• The jury will select the top ten finalists and those finalists will be asked to submit their original piece of artwork. A winner will be chosen from among these ten submissions.
• Submissions must be received before closing of business on Friday November 18th, 2011. Please include your complete name, bio and artwork title with each submission.
• Canadian artists and artists residing in Canada are eligible.
• There is a limit of 3 submissions per artist.

Call for Submissions: The Art Gallery of Alberta is seeking submissions for the Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art exhibition, which will be presented at the Art Gallery of Alberta from January 26 – May 6, 2013. History of the Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art
Since its inception in 1996, the Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art has presented new and exciting works by over 130 different Alberta contemporary artists. As the only exhibition of its kind in Canada, the Alberta Biennial has served to promote Alberta artists across the country and brings national attention to Alberta’s art scene.
The Curator of the 2013 Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art
The Art Gallery of Alberta is pleased to announce that award-winning, Alberta art critic and independent curator, Nancy Tousley, will curate the 8th Alberta Biennial. In March 2011, Tousley received the Governor General’s Award for Visual and Media Arts for outstanding contribution and a medal from the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts in 2009. Tousley was the art critic of the Calgary Herald for over 30 years, and has been a contributing editor to Canadian Art Magazine since 1986. Along with her writing, Tousley has curated numerous exhibitions, including: Robert Fried: Prints, Posters and Drawings (1973), The Brooklyn Museum, New York; Image…Word…Sequence: Visual Narratives by Martin Vaughn-James (1975), Art Gallery of Ontario; Prints: Bochner, LeWitt, Mangold, Marden, Martin, Renouf, Rockburn, Ryman (1975-1976), Art Gallery of Ontario; The Berenice Abbott Portfolios (1982), Glenbow Museum; William Perehudoff (1993-1994), Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon; Welcome to Our World: Contemporary Canadian Folk Art (1996-1997), McMichael Canadian Art, Collection Kleinberg; and Carol Wainio: Persistent Images (1998-1999), Art Gallery of York University, Toronto.
The Submission Process
As with all past Alberta Biennial exhibitions, the curatorial selection process commences with a public Call for Submissions to resident Alberta artists. Submissions should include: a curriculum vitae; a brief artist’s statement; a CD with a maximum of 20 images f of recent work, formatted as a PowerPoint presentation (with artist’s name, title, media and date of work clearly indicated for each image) or a maximum of 3 videos or DVDs for media or time-based work; and a self-addressed envelope with appropriate postage for return delivery if required.

International open call in SIERRA “Female Project”, Spain (deadline: 1 October)

Since its opening in July 2010, one of the fundamental objectives of SIERRA has been to promote the construction of spaces of visibility, action and thinking about contemporary art proposals and their relationship with nature and environment of the Huelva mountains population which is located at both the cultural, social, educational or anthropological.
These spaces have been shaped through multiple activities such as laboratories specialized in middle and practical nature, and nature art workshops for adults and children, workshops and conferences, production of audio and audiovisual pieces, actions in space and natural … interventions in the environment of the farm the springs, with over 70 acres of free land for their realization.
With the construction of Route FEMALE (whose realization is expected in September 2011 to March 2012), the SIERRA center plays a crucial part especially in a mainstreaming women in centrifugal and centripetal character, return, that part of the involvement in the social fabric and human women, and the concept of femininity in the countryside, nearby towns for enhancement through art and visions of other women artists here. A loop back to them, the women of the mountains, in the process of their integration in the various proposals.
The call is open to women artists of any age, nationality or origin.
The process of interventions will follow the following approach:
·        Once the deadline for proposals and selected five projects, establish a work schedule, the first online study and adaptation to the ground and then through the face of the artists stay for a week in SIERRA.
·        In this period we will formalize the intervention process, according to its nature (for example, if the project affects collaboration and contact with persons, associations … or if is a broader concept of femininity as the rural … would organize and facilitate access to the circumstances and the search for suitable materials for the intervention)
·        The intervention must have a physical reflection in the natural route but may involve carrying out other activities such as workshops, sound pieces, videos, documentaries …
·        One of the conditions, in fact, is the artist with the help opf the organization where appropriate, obtain documentation of the entire process so that it can transform into different art pieces.
·        Intervention may be concluded or at least begin the week of the artist in SIERRA residence (after studying it), or terminated after according to its instructions.

The organization awarded a fee of 500 € by artist (after taxes) and has allocated another 500 € for the development and performance materials. Apart from the organization will bear the costs of accommodation and meals for the artists during a week in the Hotel Los Veneros located in the same facilities SIERRA arts center.
In any case the organization will bear the cost of transport and transfer of the artists from their point of origin (domestic or international), SIERRA art center.
The organization is committed, other than payment of fees, accommodation and subsistence, to facilitate as far as possible, all actions and resources needed to achieve the work.
The space for the FEMALE path is a trail amounting to the side of the mountains surrounding the farm Los Veneros enabled transit and visit high environmental interest, with an approximate distance of 3000 meters. It runs between the end of the region of Andévalo and mountain foothills, reaching an altitude of 750 meters and with a very broad view. The predominant vegetation of brambles and briars, highlighting the endemic “erica andevalensis.” Other medicinal plants are also well represented within their biodiversity. For the realization of the interventions should take into mind that in addition of involvement in female grup in the area, the sustainability of the project and its realization using local materials and / or who are respectful and do not alter the environment or mountains ecosystem.

Proposals should include:
–         Initial project of the proposal detailing the size and scope of its previous production.
–         The relationship with the female domain and women of the environment
–         Trajectory of the artist, can be documented with the contribution of material that is appropriate and being valued relationship of their work in the field of gender perspective or natural intervention (without this being conclusive in principle).
–         Availability dates for the artist to the implementation of the project.

Once the jury selection will begin the process of working with the organization for an optimal fit of the project space and environment, the arts center providing all the information.

THE PROJECT
Every year Beam commissions unique large-scale collaborative Projects that serve as centerpieces of each Beam session. Our Project Management Team work with the Project Masters to “translate” the Project blueprint into the camp context. Beam Campers and Staff work together to make the Project happen. Projects can range from the conceptual to the structural.
THE CAMP
Beam Camp is a 8-week summer program comprised of two sessions for kids aged 7-17 in Strafford, New Hampshire. Beam Campers cultivate hands-on skills while exploring innovative thinking, design and the creative process. They transform ideas into artifacts and personal achievement into community success. Teams of campers work on different aspects of the Project each morning.
PROJECT IDEA SCOPE
- Take a look at our previous eight Beam Projects (http://bit.ly/bWlAtw). Think about how your Project will introduce Beam to new materials, media, techniques, tools, methods and concepts.
- Each camp session is 24 days long, with six, three hour work days per week. Projects should therefore be of a scale large enough to busy 108 campers supervised by 20+ adults for approximately fifty hours.
- Project Ideas should be big and result in a finished, spectacular product.
- You and/or your team should be able to tell us exactly how a group of adults would execute the kind of idea you propose.
- Our expertise is “translating” Project Ideas into the Beam context, but you must be the expert in the field(s) involved in executing your proposal.
- Your idea should take advantage of Beam’s outdoor space and rural location, but it need not be about camp or children or nature.

MEDIATE presents the most innovative San Francisco sound/art/music festival every two years in San Francisco. Bringing together purveyors from across the sonic spectrum, Soundwave produces experiential performances that will challenge the way you see and hear sound and music.
The next season of Soundwave will explore our sonic connections to the human condition. For HUMANITIES, Soundwave seeks artists, composers and musicians to investigate our human experience, and examine the future of our human constructs, cultures and rituals through sound.
From Season 4’s outward examination of the environment to Season 5’s inward reflection of our own being and existence, the 2012 festival attempts to voice what makes us human in the backdrop of the MesoAmerican Long Count Calendar “Rebirth” and the ensuing mythologies and theories.

Individual artists, as well as groups and independent curators can present proposals for exhibitions and/or projects (hereafter ‘event’) to be held at the Armenian Center for Contemporary Experimental Art (ACCEA, NPAK in Armenian acronym) on following conditions:
1. Deadline for submitting proposals is September 30 of preceding year.
2. There is no limit on the type and medium of the event: fine arts, performing arts,
architecture, music, literature, art criticism, etc.
3. Proposal package must include:
- Title of the project and its concept.
- Name and CV of curator/organizer (the applicant)
- Name(s) and CV(s) of artists involved
- Digital images of prior works of the participant artist(s)
- Detailed cost estimate of the event
- Source(s) and types of funding (confirmed or in process) for the event
4. Arts Council of ACCEA/NPAK will review the proposals and reply in writing by
December 15 of preceding year.
Applicants should bear in mind that:
1. ACCEA/NPAK is always closed for winter vacation, every year from mid-December through mid-January of the following year.
2. ACCEA/NPAK organizes Annual Festival of Alternative Art (AFAA), also known as Festival of ‘Talent Search and Discovery’ with following specifications:
- AFAA is held during month of April. Therefore the month of April is always taken.
- There is standing Open Call for participation at AFAA for all aspiring artists and curators.

Spark Box Studio’s Artist Residency Program provides live/work space to accommodate both emerging and professional printmakers, photographers, painters, illustrators and writers. Artists-in-residence have access to our professional studio and resources. About the award:
Six emerging artists will receive a one-week (7 days) residency at our Open Studio in Prince Edward County. The selected applicants will be given a private studio space and given access to the Spark Box Studio equipment and resources, as well, winners will be provided with living accommodations for their weeklong stay. They will also have access to career guidance from owners Chrissy Poitras and Kyle Topping, along with, local community members.
The winter residency award runs from January 9, 2012 to March 31, 2011. Please be advised that the award is for 7 consecutive days.

Artist in Residence Program, The Craft Studio, Harbourfront Centre, Toronto (DEADLINE: ongoing)

Founded in 1974 The Craft Studio is a unique Canadian institution that assists recent graduates and emerging craftspeople to establish professional careers; and exposes the public to the world of contemporary craft through residencies, exhibitions, and events. Harbourfront Centre’s Craft Department is the only post-graduate national training facility for craftspeople, recognized by Canadian Heritage.
Residencies are designed to assist and promote recent graduates and emerging craftspeople by providing time, facilities, professional development programmes and resources to create and develop work. Talent and commitment are encouraged in a community that advocates contemporary craft expression. The Craft Studio residency programme acts as a stepping stone between school and a professional career. It contributes to public education by providing a venue where the public can observe craftspeople at work.
We encourage serious craftspeople, across Canada and internationally to consider a residency in The Craft Studio. We invite submissions and maintain an up-to-date file of applicants interested in current and future openings. If you live outside the area and are planning a visit to Toronto, interviews can be arranged with sufficient notice. Out-of-town applicants must provide for their own accommodation and travel costs for the interview.
Residencies include full use of equipped studios, lectures & workshops by national and international renowned craftspeople and artists, conferences, exhibitions and teaching opportunities. All materials and supplies must be provided by the residents. Residency does not include housing. If you are applying from outside Canada, you must make your own arrangements for a visa to live in this country.

2012 Artist in Residence (AiR)

Guidelines/Eligibility:
The New Gallery is now accepting residency proposals from individual artists and collectives in all disciplines, for research and development of new or ongoing bodies of work. Proposals that are collaborative and/or multi-disciplinary in nature are strongly encouraged. In the spirit of esteemed Calgary artist John Snow, who was involved in a broad range of artistic activities, TNG seeks proposals which indicate new directions for the applicant(s), including the investigation of new media.
 
Previously home to the University of Calgary’s Markin-Flanagan Distinguished Writers Program, the John Snow House (JSH) has already hosted distinguished writers-in-residence Timothy Findlay and Michael Ondaatje, amongst others – and artists/curators who require time to write, research and retreat are also encouraged to apply.
 
JSH is municipally zoned to permit public events and applicants may consider this in their proposal, including suggestions for workshops, presentations, screenings or other creative on-site programming. However applicants should also bear in mind that the house is a designated historic resource in a quiet, residential neighborhood.
 
Fees
TNG Artists in Residence are not charged fees nor paid a stipend. All travel, material and living costs are the sole responsibility of the selected participant(s). Travel grants may be available from the Canada Council for the Arts and/or provincial or territorial arts granting bodies. The New Gallery will assume all costs associated with use of the house as a living space while the AiR is present.
Applicants are asked to take the limited financial resources of TNG into account, but also consider the wide-ranging possibilities of this unique urban residential setting. JSH exists as a staffed archive and resource centre as well, so proposals that address the collection are encouraged; selected artists may also be eligible for special access to the archives and research guidance, at the discretion of the JSH Director. The JSH Director is also responsible for yard work and general maintenance of the house, but is not a housekeeper.
Selection Process
As with all of TNG’s programming, the Artist in Residence will be selected by our peer Programming Jury. In the interest of both democratizing and administratively streamlining the submission review process, TNG Programming Selection Committee ONLY accepts proposals submitted online via the dedicated portal at: https://tng.slideroom.com/

TNG does not require letters of reference, although with permission from the applicant, we may contact organizations with which the applicant has had shows, residencies or other affiliations.
Deadline: November 15, 2011. Applicants will be contacted by mid-December 2011. The residency will take place in August 2012, for either part or all of the month. Please include a brief timeline with your proposal and indicate how long you wish to be in residence.
Facilities
The historic John Snow House (JSH) is located at 915 -18 Avenue SW, in the residential community of Lower Mount Royal – offering easy access to the downtown core, public transit, grocery stores, restaurants, medical services, banks and all other amenities. Originally built in 1912 and renovated in 1959-61 (with a studio addition by Maxwell Bates) and again in the 2000’s, the house is a fully functional residence which includes a fenced back yard (with a small garden and composting area) and patio, front porch, two upstairs bedrooms (one with ensuite bathroom), a spacious living room, a full kitchen, and laundry room. WiFi access is also available. The small studio space addition at the back of the house may be available as shared workspace, at the discretion of the JSH Director, whose office is situated there. The studio space is not suited to working with power tools, nor extremely messy or large productions.
 
JSH is a lovely example of working class housing, originally intended for Canadian Pacific Rail employees in the late 19th/early 20th centuries. TNG also has an agreement with a local bike rental organization, so the AiR has free access to bike transportation if desired. Calgary is the largest city in Alberta, with a population of 1,065,455 (2009 Census). With easy access to the Rocky Mountains via the Trans-Canada Highway, Calgary is within a 4 hour drive of major art centres in Banff, Edmonton and Lethbridge. Climate in Calgary in August can be cool in the evenings, but very pleasant during the day. August is probably the most beautiful time to spend in this city, as temperatures peak in July and August to about 25°C / 77°F.

Le gouvernement Harper respecte son engagement à présenter de nouveau la Loi sur la modernisation du droit d’auteur

OTTAWA, ONTARIO–( 29 sept. 2011) – L’honorable Christian Paradis, ministre de l’Industrie, et l’honorable James Moore, ministre du Patrimoine canadien et des Langues officielles, ont annoncé aujourd’hui qu’ils déposaient de nouveau la Loi sur la modernisation du droit d’auteur du gouvernement du Canada.

Conscient de l’importance d’un régime de droits d’auteur moderne pour l’économie numérique du Canada, le gouvernement respecte l’engagement qu’il a pris dans le discours du Trône de 2011, c’est-à-dire présenter et faire adopter sans délai, un projet de loi qui établit un bon équilibre entre les besoins des créateurs et des consommateurs. Grâce à l’adoption de ce projet de loi, le régime de droits d’auteur canadien deviendra un régime moderne, souple et conforme aux normes internationales actuelles.

“Les Canadiens auront bientôt un régime de droits d’auteur propice à la protection et à la création d’emplois, à la promotion de l’innovation et à de nouveaux investissements au Canada, a déclaré le ministre Paradis. Nous sommes convaincus que, grâce à ce projet de loi, le régime canadien de droits d’auteur sera tourné vers l’avenir et adapté à l’évolution rapide de notre monde numérique.”

“Notre gouvernement a reçu le mandat clair des Canadiens de mettre en oeuvre des mesures pour assurer le dynamisme de l’économie numérique canadienne, a précisé le ministre Moore. Notre gouvernement sait à quel point les nouvelles technologies influencent le mode de vie de nombreux Canadiens. Ce projet de loi établit un équilibre fondé sur le gros bon sens qui tient compte des intérêts des consommateurs et des droits des créateurs.”

La modernisation du régime de droits d’auteur du Canada constitue un volet important de la stratégie gouvernementale en matière d’économie numérique. Avec chaque année qui passe sans régime moderne, le besoin se fait de plus en plus criant. La popularité explosive des réseaux sociaux et des nouveaux appareils numériques comme les ordinateurs tablettes, les appareils mobiles et les lecteurs de livres numériques a transformé la façon dont les Canadiens créent et utilisent des oeuvres protégées.

Le projet de loi reconnaît que les professeurs, les étudiants, les artistes, les sociétés privées, les consommateurs, les familles et les titulaires de droits d’auteur utilisent la technologie d’une foule de façons. Le projet de loi donne aux créateurs et aux titulaires de droits d’auteur les outils nécessaires pour protéger leurs oeuvres et assurer la croissance de leur entreprise grâce à des modèles d’affaires modernes et innovateurs. Le projet de loi donne aussi aux Canadiens des règles claires qui leur permettront de participer pleinement à l’économie numérique tant aujourd’hui qu’à l’avenir.

Dépôt du projet de loi sur le droit d’auteur

LE BLOC QUÉBÉCOIS DÉNONCE CE NOUVEL ASSAUT CONTRE LES CRÉATEURS

Ottawa, jeudi 29 septembre 2011 – « En redéposant un projet de loi sur le droit d’auteur qui est, un copier-coller de C-32, un projet de loi rejeté catégoriquement par les créateurs, les conservateurs démontrent à nouveau leur mépris pour la vitalité de la culture québécoise. » C’est ainsi que le chef parlementaire par intérim du Bloc Québécois, porte-parole en matière de Patrimoine et député de Bas-Richelieu-Nicolet-Bécancour, Louis Plamondon, et le porte-parole du Bloc Québécois en matière d’Industrie et député de Richmond-Arthabaska, André Bellavance ont réagi au second dépôt du projet de loi sur la modernisation du droit d’auteur.

« Le projet de loi des conservateurs oublie un principe fondamental : les artistes ont besoin de revenus pour vivre et pour continuer à créer. Pas étonnant que l’Assemblée nationale du Québec ait unanimement dénoncé cette mesure législative qui ne permet pas d’assurer aux créateurs québécois une pleine reconnaissance de leurs droits et un revenu conséquent à la valeur de leurs créations » a signalé Louis Plamondon.

« Il est clair que l’effet de ce projet de loi sera l’appauvrissement de nos artistes au profit de la grande entreprise. Les conservateurs n’ont pris en compte aucune des critiques légitimes et proposent des modifications qui avantageront nettement la grande industrie du logiciel, du logiciel de jeu, du film et de la radiodiffusion au détriment des droits de nos artistes et de nos artisans. Cela explique pourquoi les représentants de 400 industries, de 38 multinationales, de 300 chambres de commerce ainsi que 150 PDG ont applaudi C-32, alors que les artistes et même l’Union des consommateurs, l’ont dénoncé à juste titre », a expliqué André Bellavance.

À cet égard, le chef parlementaire par intérim du Bloc Québécois rappelle que le 30 novembre dernier, une centaine d’artistes québécois, dont Luc Plamondon, Robert Charlebois, Michel Rivard et Richard Séguin, se sont déplacés à Ottawa pour dire aux ministres du Patrimoine et de l’Industrie ainsi qu’à tout le caucus conservateur qu’ils ne veulent pas du projet de loi sur le droit d’auteur tel que le gouvernement s’entête à le présenter. « Les Québécoises et les Québécois ne sont pas dupes, ils savent qu’appauvrir les artistes, c’est en bout de ligne appauvrir la culture » a indiqué Louis Plamondon.

« Personne ne peut travailler gratuitement. Si on cesse de verser des redevances aux artistes pour leurs droits d’auteur, si on leur enlève leur gagne-pain, la perte sera aussi pour les consommateurs, qui se verront privés de nouvelles créations d’œuvres artistiques », a conclu le député de Richmond-Arthabaska, André Bellavance.
