//
//

Date limite d’envoi : 9 mars 2022

NOUVELLE ÉDITION DE LA MINUTE VIDÉO

DATE LIMITE : 14 MARS 2022

Faites parvenir vos projets :

Appel d’oeuvre

Programmation 2021-2022

Date de Tombée: 15 mars 2022

//

VOTRE DOSSIER DOIT CONTENIR :une description de votre projet et de la façon dont il s’inscrit dans la thématique de Savoir [rien] faire (maximum d’une page ou présentation audio ou vidéo de 10 minutes maximum);

THIRD SHIFT is an annual festival of public contemporary artworks that takes place in Saint John, New Brunswick. We are thrilled to announce that THIRD SHIFT 2022 will take place from August 19 – 21, 2022!

Calling all artists 📣 THIRD SHIFT: PERIPHERIES aims to explore, imagine, and critique limits, boundaries, and structures that create experiences at, or with, the periphery. We are seeking proposals for artwork that explores different ways of seeing, employs obscurity and abstraction, or presents things out of focus (as in peripheral vision). Proposals could also outline artwork that refers to geographical peripheries such as shared experiences in rural areas or with borders, explorations of peripheries of reality and consciousness, or investigations of real and perceived power dynamics. We encourage applicants to share experiences of existing on the periphery of a situation, community, or industry, and/or critically examine our personal and collective surroundings.

This theme is intentionally broad and, as such, can be interpreted in a multitude of ways. The proposed projects can take almost any form, from installation to performance. We encourage applicants to interpret the theme creatively. We value experimentation and collaboration.

Need help? Application assistance is available for anyone who faces disability-related barriers to completing an online application and/or Indigenous applicants facing language, geographic and/or cultural barriers within the online application process. CALL FOR PROPOSALS

Program to support the production of two short films

Deadline for submissions: March 7, 2022

Seeing and Not Knowing is a program supporting the realization of two short films. A bursary of $ 18 000 each will be attributed to two filmmakers/artists to produce a short film over a period of eight months. The films will then be publicly screened at an event organized by the Gallery.

We are looking for films that by brushing against the politics of a place/site are attentive to its history and context, films that reflect at the conjuncture of these issues: proposals that think with them. We invite filmmakers/artists who employ an introspective camera. At once a tool, an object, an extension of the eye, the gaze, the body, and the filmmaker’s history; this is a camera in reciprocity with a place/site in its history and its human and non-human nature. The camera produces a multiplicity of relations with a place/site, which in turn encroaches upon it. In this perspective to film is not to know, but rather to observe, wait, receive, listen, follow, open, dive in, speculate.

ELIGIBILITY AND MODALITIES

This call is open to all filmmakers/artists of all ages who are Québec residents. Those who are interested will have already realized one short or medium-length film that has been publicly presented. The planned short film can be the work of a single author or of a collective. The duration of the short film can be anywhere between 8 to 20 minutes. It can be a documentary or a fiction and experimental in its form and tenor.

Once the bursary is received the recipients will have eight months to realize the film including post-production. The exact date of delivery will be determined at the time the bursary is given. Once the films are received, a screening event with public discussion will be planned in collaboration with the filmmakers/artists.

The film can also be conceived to be presented as an installation. However, the Gallery will only present it as a single channel projection event. The work will remain the property of the filmmaker/artist and he·she·they will be free to present it elsewhere.

The candidates must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents. In the case of a collective, at least one member must fulfill this requirement.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Please provide the information in the following order in one single PDF:

Send to the following address: ellen [point] artgallery [arobas] concordia [point] ca – Object : Short FilmPrincipal residence, contacts and curriculum vitae;
Project proposal (between 800-1000 words);
Budget (Excel); *
Timeline demonstrating the feasibility of the project over a period of eight months;
Links(s) to one (two if possible) already realized short or medium-length film(s) (no files please). ** (if only one short film then don’t hesidate to send other images of another video or non-filmic work)

Submission deadline: March 7, 2022

*Additional budgetary details:

If travel and accommodation are essential to the realization of the work the amount allotted cannot exceed $ 2500.

** It or they may have been presented as installations.

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection of the two films will be made by a committee composed of four persons (two of whom will be an artist and a filmmaker) whose names will be communicated at the time the selection is announced.

EVALUATION CRITERIA  Relevance of the proposal in relation to the program’s focus;
Coherence and critical nature of the proposal and practice in relationship to the context of contemporary art practices;
Feasibility of the project in relation to the timeline;
Realistic breakdown of the budget.

Artist Residency: CFMDC + Archive/Counter-Archive
A unique experience to engage with audiovisual archival materials.
Deadline: March 20th, 2022, 11:59pm EDT
Timeline: 3 months in Summer 2022

Location: Online, in person possible with COVID-19 protocols in place at CFMDCs
office

Archive/Counter-Archive (www.counterarchive.ca) and the Canadian Filmmakers
Distribution Centre (CFMDC) invite applications for an Artist in Residence.

The artist will create an artwork based on or inspired by audiovisual archives found
at CFMDC. The final work may be a short media work (sound or moving-image) or
take the form of an installation, presentation, mixed media performance, or curated
program. We have defined counter-archives as political, resistant, and community-
based. They are embodied differently and have explicit intention to historicize
differently, to disrupt conventional national narratives, and to write differences into
public accounts.

The artist residency is designed to give freedom and flexibility to the artist and their
relationship to the materials. It includes research and contact with CFMDC archivists
and access to scanning technologies. CFMDC will provide a fee for the artist and for
materials needed to complete the project (for example installation and screening
fees).

TO APPLY, PLEASE SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING IN ONE PDF BY March 20th,
2022, 11:59pm EDT:

Expression of Interest: Artists must simply describe why they are interested in the
residency and
speak to how their body of work and past experience would make
them a strong candidate to participate (maximum 500 words)*;

CV (no more than 3 pages);

Artist website OR 5-10 samples of your work including still images and/or links to
media artwork.

*A project proposal is not required at this stage of application.

We welcome applications from emerging or established Canadian artists with
professional training or a history of public presentation of their work in a professional
context (i.e., galleries, film/media festivals, etc.). We strongly encourage Black,
Indigenous, POC, and 2SLGBTQIA+ artists to apply.

The artist residency is designed to give freedom and flexibility to the artist and their
relationship to the collection materials. It includes research and contact with
collections and programming staff, access to facilities, as well as $5,000 CAD
financial support for the artist, materials and subsistence.

Please note that this residency does not provide accommodation in
Toronto, but
provides some funding for travel and subsistence.

At the conclusion of the residency, the artist is expected to participate in a public
exhibition/event showcasing their residency work – their other work(s) outside of the
residency may be included. This may take the form of an artist talk, a public
workshop, a screening, etc.

Send questions & applications to: morgan [arobas] cfmdc [point] org, please use the subject line
CFMDC ACA Artist Call in your email.

ABOUT THE HOST: Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre (CFMDC) is a not-for-
profit, non-commercial media arts distributor. We specialize in independent, artist-
made work on film and video, including works from historically underrepresented
communities. CFMDC advocates for a holistic understanding of production,
distribution, and exhibition that prioritizes artist rights, accessibility, and the creation
of new audiences through education and critical thinking. We have one of the most
important collections of artist-made moving
image on film in Canada that includes
16mm, 35mm, and (s)8mm films.

This project is a SSHRC Partnership project involving over 14 community archives
and artist-run centres, as well as four universities (York, Queens, Concordia, and
Ryerson).

Archive/Counter-Archive is dedicated to researching and remediating audiovisual
archives created by women, Indigenous Peoples, the LGBTQ2+ community, and
immigrant communities. Political, resistant, and community-based, counter-archives
disrupt conventional narratives and enrich our histories.

Lili Michaud, Directrice Occurrence

Le dossier doit inclure :Démarche artistique;
Description détaillée de l’oeuvre proposée;
Documentation visuelle avec description (images sur support numérique);
Curriculum vitae à jour;

Indigenous artists to submit proposals for a five-month, site-specific visual arts
project hosted in Allan Gardens. Since the great melt of the last ice age more than
11,000 years ago, many diverse nations of First Peoples have lived in and cared for
this neighbourhood. This project is intended to acknowledge, reflect, and respond to
the continuous Indigenous presence in the area of Allan Gardens.

This residency is part of Imagine the Park, a year-long series of cultural events and
activities in and around the Allan Gardens neighbourhood presented by OSI.
Imagine the Park aims to foster a more welcoming, creative, well-resourced green
space for the wider Allan Gardens community.

month residency, taking place from May 15 to October 15, 2022. The expected time
commitment is approximately 12 hours per week, with 4 hours or more per week

community of park users.

under development. For indoor space, Imagine the Park will work with the successful
artist or collective to find a working space in the community that best fits their needs

Call for Papers: General Idea Symposium
4 June 2022
National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa

Three heads were better than one: AA Bronson, Felix Partz, Jorge Zontal. As
members of General Idea (1969″1994), this trio ” who thought of themselves more
like a rock band than as an artist collective ” have had a huge impact on the
international contemporary art world.

The conceptual apparatus of their flagship enterprise, The 1984 Miss General Idea
Pavillion, though destroyed, has left a large imprint on culture. General Idea were a
mirror of their times and a view on the future. They were cultural anthropologists, like
Claude Lvi-Strauss; semiologists, like Roland Barthes; media savants, like Marshall
McLuhan; and queer literary outsiders, like William Burroughs. They created a
complex system that functioned as myth. Fact and fiction always blended in their
work. So did irony and critique. They inhabited contemporary mass cultural and
media formats with witty sophistication: the beauty pageant, LIFE magazine,
television production. Their 1984 Miss General Idea Pageant was a parody of the
ritual elevation and demotion of art stars, figured within the dominatrix persona and
temporary reign of The Spirit of Miss General Idea. The Pavillion was an architecture
elevated through language, constructed purely as a performative fiction. They said it,
they did it. General Idea were social figures: artists with berets, businessmen with
plans. One moment they were architects designing and building the Pavillion, then
they were archaeologists sifting through its ruins. As cultural parasites they could
mutate with the times. Little did they know that eventually their viral methods would
be
mirrored in a real-world crisis: AIDS.

The forthcoming exhibition General Idea (3 June”20 November 2022) at the
National Gallery of Canada will cover the groups twenty-five years of collaboration.
It will include more than two hundred works, revealing the breadth of General Ideas
practice. The exhibition will be accompanied by a major publication ” the most
comprehensive source on the groups work to date.

In conjunction with the exhibition and the launch of the publication, the National
Gallery of Canada is organizing a symposium centred on General Ideas life and
work. We invite established and emerging scholars, art historians, curators, artists,
and architects to submit proposals for 20-30 minute presentations

Please send a 300-word abstract and CV to Philip Monk, Chair, and Adam Welch,
Associate Curator, National Gallery of Canada, at GIsymposium [arobas] gallery [point] ca. We
welcome abstracts and presentations in both English and French. Panelists will
receive a CAD 500 honorarium, round-trip
travel to Ottawa, two nights’
accommodation, and per diem.

The National Gallery of Canada is committed to collaborating with individuals who
reflect the diversity of Canadian society and welcomes proposals from all applicants.

Deadline for abstracts: 25 March 2022
Notification date: April 1, 2022
Deadline for complete papers from accepted participants: May 20, 2022

Call for Submissions: Curatorial Proposals for NAMARA Project Space

Call for Submissions:
Curatorial Proposals for NAMARA Project Space, Toronto
Located in the Dupont Arts Building, NAMARA Projects is a new venue for research,
deliberation, and presentation of curatorial work.

NAMARA works around the fluctuating borders of the traditional art world. The
explorations conducted in the Project Space inform both independent and
commissioned presentations. Through our work, we celebrate thoughtful work by
contemporary artists; challenge traditions, experimenting with untested methods;
and welcome new collaborators and audiences.

NAMARA operates at the intersection of art and business worlds, wavering into both
sides at different times, and always in an effort to see that the following occurs:

Art professionals receive fair pay for their work.
Art finds audiences by way of generative brand
partnerships; and engagement within
the traditional art community.
Brands enjoy the advantages of working with thoughtful art while maintaining best
practices and ethical standards.
Our projects include art professionals from under-represented and equity-seeking
groups.
There is no curation without art so the product of artistic labour is always the primary
focus.

We invite curators to respond to this open call for curatorial proposals. There is no
criteria nor deadline but we ask that your proposal is tailored to the space. Digital or
online components are also welcome. A maximum of four proposals per year will be
accepted.

Call for Pitches

EXTRACTION

C152 – Summer 2022

Due: April 1, 2022

Everything is vulnerable to extraction: water, woods, metals, oils, emotions, labour, data, land, ideas, bodies, time. As we know, extraction is systemic—the political-ontological basis for the circulation of resources under neoliberal capitalism—and agents of such appropriation scarcely do enough to respect, heal, and replenish their sources. This issue explores artistic practices and adjacent bodies of knowledge that closely engage an array of extractive practices, interrogating their manifold consequences and attempting to demarcate non-extractive modalities. How are artists raising consciousness? Intervening? What are the possibilities for repair work when repair requires resources that exceed those allocated to inflict the damage? For future-building? How does the art world’s rapid pace, expectation of novelty, and thirst for emotional displays depend on the exploitation of individuals? How does resistance play out? What is ethical funding, and how could the arts (especially that of a country whose wealth relies so predominantly on profits gleaned from non-renewable resources) operate without “dirty” money? How are artists forging generative practices from research, and the complex affective constellation of guilt, responsibility, and hope?

Thematic feature, artist project, and column pitches accepted until April 1, 2022. We suggest pitching early to avoid disappointment. Review pitches, which are not required to be thematic, are accepted on a rolling basis.

Send pitches to pitch [arobas] cmagazine [point] com, with a subject line that starts with the word PITCH and goes on to indicate the submission type (review, essay, interview, One Thing, for example). Please include ~150 words about your subject and how you’ll approach it, including hyperlinks wherever relevant. An estimated word count is appreciated. If you have not written for us recently, include a link to your website—or a copy of your CV—and one or two writing samples (ideally ones written in a style similar to your pitched piece). Submitted work must be original; we do not publish reprints nor adaptations of any kind.

Thank you for understanding that we are unable to reply to unsuccessful pitches.

Please see our submission and writer’s guidelines for more information.

Note: we do not accept pitches from platforms regarding their own programming.

Call for Reviews

Ongoing

We publish print and online reviews of exhibitions, publications, moving image works, performance artworks, symposia, and other projects sited in Canada, outside of Canada, and online. Reviews cover subjects that have occurred within three months of the pitch for an exhibition, performance, or symposium, and within two years for publications and moving image works.

Online:
325-375 words. Flat rate of $175. We welcome work from anyone anywhere, but are currently especially keen on reviews that address things happening outside Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. Writers may submit pitches or completed texts.

Print:
800-1000 words. Flat rate of $340. Writers may only submit pitches.

Please see our submission and writer’s guidelines for more information.

• un énoncé d’intention (1000 à 1500 mots, accompagnés d’un maximum de dix images) avec description du projet et justification stratégique. Ce document doit aussi présenter clairement la vision curatoriale et le format choisi;
• un curriculum vitae précisant la formation, les expériences professionnelles et en recherche, les langues de travail et tout autre renseignement pertinent;
• une sélection représentative des projets réalisés qui permette de comprendre l’approche particulière du ou de la candidat.e;

Appel de textes | Call For papers

No. 107 : Famille

No. 106 – Dossier Douleur
