▪ offrir un minimum de deux ateliers par session : automne et hiver (idéalement, un atelier jeunesse et un atelier adulte);
▪ offrir des sessions de formation éducatives et amusantes dans le cadre du programme jeunesse (scolaire/préscolaire) du CACD;
▪ travailler de concert avec les autres artistes du programme de résidences du CACD pour créer une atmosphère dynamique dans le CACD;

· un résumé de leur projet;
· un énoncé de leur démarche artistique (1 page maximum);
· une description de leur projet comprenant un échéancier de production (1 page maximum);
· leurs propositions d’ateliers pour les sessions;
· le budget pour les ateliers/coût prévus des matériaux;

CITY OF TORONTO
Call to Artists for Expression of Interest (EOI)
Permanent Public Art Works / Bicycle Stands
Hydro and Rail Corridor Multi-Use Trails Project

In July 2009 the City of Toronto’s Transportation Services was awarded funding through the Recreation Infrastructure Canada Program in Ontario (RInC) and the Ontario Recreation Program (Ontario REC) to develop seven multi-use off-road trails to be located at hydro and former rail corridors. The Gatineau Hydro Corridor runs approximately from Hwy 401 southwest to Eglinton and Victoria Park avenues while the Finch Hydro Corridor runs across North York to Scarborough. The trail along the old CN Leaside Rail Corridor will link Eglinton to York Mills while another trail will follow the old Scarborough Pit Spur Rail Corridor. To be completed by March 2011, the infrastructure project adds approximately 30 kilometres of new and 4 kilometres of upgraded off-road bike and multi-use trails to the City of Toronto’s Bikeway Network and represents the largest expansion of the City’s trail system in some time.

This project provides a public art opportunity for the commissioning of artistically designed bicycle stands (lock-ups). Based on the standard structural post-and-ring bicycle stand, the elaborated design or designs by one artist will be chosen and manufactured as multiples. These will be installed for bicycle parking within the trails’ numerous recreational nodes that include landscaping, benches, garbage receptacles and pedestrian-scale lighting, at key crossroad locations.

Based on the City of Toronto’s 1% policy for public art on capital projects, the budget of $180,000 includes fees and fabrication. Fabrication of the artistically designed bike stands is to be competed by Friday, 4 March 2011. Other costs, such as site preparation, below grade work and installation, have been removed from the responsibility of the artist.

The public art design concept will be selected through a two stage open competition by a specially convened independent Selection Committee made up of practicing arts professionals and community representatives.

For this first stage of the competition, Toronto Cultural Services is inviting local and national artists or artist teams to respond to this Expression of Interest (EOI) by submitting the following:

* Resume(s)
* Artist(s) statement outlining interest in the project and experience.
* 6 to 8 digital images of recent, relevant work in the following format:
o jpg images on a PC compatible CD-R
o each maximum of 1024 x 768 pixels
o each resolution of 72 dpi
o each maximum of 1 MB
o each RGB, sRGB or grayscale colour mode files only (no CMYK)
o caption each with number, your name and title of work
* An “Image Information” sheet that details per image: number, artist(s) name, title, date, medium, dimensions. Please be sure the number on the list matches the number of the jpeg image.
* Be sure to label the CD-R with your name.
* If desired, include a stamped, self-addressed envelope for return of submission material.

Submissions by email are not accepted.

Submissions must be received by Friday, 13 August 2010 at 4:00 p.m. via mail or hand-delivered to:

Toronto Cultural Services
City Hall
100 Queen Street West
East Tower, 9th floor
Toronto, ON M5H 2N2
Attention: Janet Wardleworth
E-mail: culture [arobas] toronto [point] ca

Please note: Artists are NOT asked to submit proposals at this first stage of the competition.

A short list of 3 to 5 artists will be selected during this first stage. For the second stage of the competition each artist will be paid a fee to develop a project proposal based on a Terms of Reference document provided to him or her by Toronto Cultural Services. A public open house exhibition of the short listed designs and final design selection will be held at a date and place to be announced.

Toronto Cultural Services works with staff across City of Toronto divisions to identify exciting opportunities for commissioning public artworks in the City’s parks, streets and open spaces. The Hydro and Rail Corridor Multi-Use Trails Project is a joint initiative of Transportation Services, Parks, Forestry and Recreation Services and Technical Services of the City of Toronto. The public art component of the project is administered by Toronto Cultural Services.

Open Call “You Fail”, artist-run offspace periscope, Salzburg, Austria (deadline: 31 August)

Situated in Salzburg, Austria, periscope will curate and host an exhibition in November 2010 dealing with different artistic approaches towards the idea of failure.
Like with many other things the difference between success and failure seems to be a matter of definition. Dealing with authority figures, within institutions and groups one is often confronted with common practises and a popular opinion about what „ to do“ and „not to do“. On the other hand we are part of the process and often seem to know, when to consider an activity as successful or failed.
„On the Internet one often comes across: Fails! – The term Fail derives from the substantiv FAILURE and is used as a short form for: you fail! Generally a fail describes something that does not work. This can be an accident, an unfulfilled expectation, a broken computer or something one should not do at all. On the Internet the short form of this sentence ´Fail´ stands for photos and short videos of mishaps, but also has become customary in the current language. It expresses disapproval and also a kind of slight malicious joy. From the illustration of such mishaps many distribution-forms have arised, for example the so-called fail-blog mainly dealing with the publication of fail-videos and -photos.“
The call is open to theorists and (visual) artists working in any medium

The Guggenheim Museum : one of the art world’s most venerable institutions, home of masterpieces from the Impressionist movement to the modern era. YouTube: one of the world’s most expansive video repositories, home of sensations from children biting other children’s fingers to anime tributes galore. What could these two household names possibly have in common? According to the Guggenheim’s chief curator Nancy Spector and vice president of YouTube’s Creative Lab Andy Berndt, the answer is art.

“YouTube and Guggenheim.they may not be two words that pop into your head at the exact same time, but they’re really about a lot of the same things,” Berndt says in this sleek

promo video/call for submissions.
(http://www.guggenheim.org/new-york/interact/participate/youtube-play

The two cultural behemoths are joining forces to orchestrate “the first biennial of creative video,” called YouTube Play. Berndt and Spector announced an open call for submissions (in the above-linked video) on June 14th and will accept submissions through July 31st. Artists interested in having their work included in the biennial should upload videos on YouTube Play ‘s channel. Some numbers: at least 200 videos (10 minutes or less) will be chosen for inclusion on the YouTube channel, and a jury of nine “experts”-headed and organized by Spector-will select 20 videos for exhibition at “The Event.” This three-day display at the Guggenheim kicks off October 21st, which just so happens to
be the 51st anniversary of the day the museum first opened its doors. The YouTube Play channel already boasts well over 9,000 subscribers, and entrants will be notified anytime between now and October 1st if their video is selected.

In the video that introduces the biennial, Spector stresses that Guggenheim’s collaboration with YouTube is all about the democratizing and accessible powers of the Internet. “At the Guggenheim we’re always interested in how to reach the broadest possible audience,” she says. “We don’t create a hierarchy here among mediums.”

Buzz words in the selection criteria include: “innovative, original, and surprising,” Guggenheim wants submissions that “debate, discuss, test, experiment with, and elevate video in all kinds of ways.”

apexart Franchising – Resolving another boundary between art and business
Based on the idea of creating its own franchise, apexart has held two worldwide open calls for 400-word proposals asking participants why the franchise should come to their town and provide all of the support necessary to produce an exhibition.
As the art world adopts strategies from the world of business, cultural organizations have set up franchises around the globe. For the second year, apexart is joining this trend and setting up its own franchise in a new city. The Franchise competition is an opportunity for anyone from anywhere to create their own temporary apexart. For a four-week exhibition, the winner will be the director, curator and/or staff of your own apexart franchise with an $8,000 exhibition budget, a modest salary, and almost complete control. apexart provides the funding, along with the necessary guidance to make the curated exhibition happen. This includes an apexart brochure in an edition of 10,000 and its distribution around the world to more than 108 countries and a visit or two from us. The winning curator will also write an essay about the show. The Franchise is an opportunity to help bring an idea to fruition in a new place and to give someone an interesting opportunity.
The Franchise was conceived to explore a relationship between art and commerce and to enable an exhibition based on meritocratic consensus. To further extend the public interactive nature of this idea, we ask a large number of individuals to take part on a jury to score submissions from countries around the world.
SUBMIT PROPOSAL HERE FOR FRANCHISE 2011
Submission FAQs
Q: When is the submission deadline?
A: Submissions will be accepted through October 1, 2010.
Q: Can I send more than one proposal?
A: No, please send your best one, we will only accept one proposal per person or group with no exceptions.
Q: When will the exhibition take place?
A: The two winning exhibitions are scheduled to take place in February 2011 and May 2011.
Q: I live in the United States, can I still send a proposal?
A: Yes, we are accepting applications from all around the world.
Q: I live in New York, Los Angeles, or Thailand, can I apply?
A: People can submit from anywhere, but New York City, Los Angeles and Thailand are not elligible because they have been home to past Franchises.
Q: Do I need to secure a location for my exhibiton in advance?
A: Not at all, apexart will assist in securing a space for the exhibition period and in any other “business” transactions.
Q: If I win, do I need to be able to “work” regular hours during the exhibition?
A: You will need to “staff” or have someone “sit” during the exhibition period since the space will be open to the public for at least 4-6 days per week and 5-8 hours per day. Presumably this will come from your budget or volunteers..
Q. What does the budget cover?
A. Artists fees and travel, transport of art, installation materials, staff, etc.
Q. How much do I get paid?
A. You will receive $2,000 USD, which is external of the exhibition budget.
Q: Can I produce an exhibition of my own work?
A: Proposals must be for group exhibitions only, no solo shows please.
Q: I am an artist, can I still apply?
A: Yes, you are invited to apply if you are an artist, writer, curator or not in the arts at all.
Q: Can curatorial teams apply together?
A: Yes.
Q: Does it help to be affiliated with a university, gallery, or museum?
A: No. It is neither a plus nor a minus to be associated with an established organization. Your franchise idea is the most important consideration.
Q: Can I submit supplementary materials?
A: In order to create a level playing field we do not accept anything other than the online proposal.
Q: I still have questions, who can I contact?
A: Send an email with your questions to info [arobas] apexart [point] org and we will respond quickly. No calls please.

VIDA 13.0
Art & Artificial Life International Competition
Fundación Telefónica Madrid/Spain

At a time when the notion of life is once again located in an uncertain domain, a wide range of artistic initiatives come together to illustrate and investigate this phenomenon; they examine the impact on the collective conscience and the way it is manifested in cultural, technological and social thought.
Over the last decade, in the same formal space, VIDA has been bringing together inter-disciplinary projects that respond to this situation. By means of formal strategies that defy the boundaries between existing practices, these projects offer new ways of reflecting on what we understand by life and artificial life.
Fundación Telefónica announces the VIDA 13.0 Art & Artificial Life International Competition, which for the last twelve years has awarded prizes for artistic projects using technological mediums offering innovative approaches to research into artificial life.
The projects may be based on systems which emulate, imitate or speculate on the notion of life through current research and technology. These systems may involve attributes of agency and autonomy which display specific behaviour, are dynamic, react to their surr
